Determining distances is one of the most common metrologi-

cal applications in automation technology. The market sup-

plies many solutions, yet not every technology is ideal for

each application. Pepperl+Fuchs’ new distance measurement

sensor, VDM28, is setting standards in this dynamic field.

With a measuring range up to 8 m, the sensor reliably de-

tects distances in diffuse mode. The groundbreaking Pulse

Ranging Technology (PRT) measuring principle is applied.

For the first time, a red laser is used as sender. It emits

short light pulses to determine distance by measuring the

time of flight of the reflected pulses. The high visibility also

Pepperl+Fuchs focuses on innovation.

Whether inductive proximity switches or

optical distance-measuring devices – we

provide just about all operating principles in

non-contact sensors for factory automation.

We are constantly expanding this product

range to meet your automation needs even

better.

We are pleased to introduce a new member

of our family of optical distance-measuring

devices. As the technological leader in Pulse

Ranging Technology (PRT), Pepperl+Fuchs

strongly backs this procedure. We have de-

veloped our technology so that it fits into a

light barrier housing and is easy to use.

The advanced Pulse Ranging Technology al-

lows better parameters at lower cost.

It compares especially well to previous time-

of-flight solutions that are based on the prin-

ciple of phase correlation. Our measuring

method is based on the time evaluation of

extremely short but high-intensity light puls-

es. This technology is applied by sensors

that are highly insensitive to extraneous light

and remain stable at high temperatures and

in the long-term without measuring drift.

VDM28 – Pinpoint measuring Pulse-laser distance measuring for universal applications

enables optimal alignment. This is an innovative combina-

tion for PRT sensors and ensures perfect performance and

convenience through the unique advantages of this technol-

ogy. In contrast to other procedures, measuring accuracy is

independent of the object surface. The measuring principle

eliminates issues such as detection of “phantom objects” or

measuring fluctuations due to ambient conditions.

The device can be operated as a standard diffuse sensor or

as a distance measurement sensor. The switching threshold

settings are entered using simple pushbutton programming

via Teach-In. Since the devices include an IO-link interface,

the digitized analog value is also displayed and the device

can be easily programmed. The graphic operator interface

VDM28 – Pinpoinng

offers more options than are available by adjusting the

switching points with Teach-In. The distance measurement

sensor can be optimally adapted to each task. This results

in a wide variety of applications throughout all branches of

automation technology.

The largest selection of sensors on the market is available

for the proven housing design of the VDM28. In addition to

the distance-measuring device, thru-beam sensors and ret-

ro-reflective sensors are also available. This housing design

thus incorporates more optical technologies than any other.

Valves are among the

most important com-

ponents in process

technology and are

available in a huge

variety of technical

versions and sizes.

Monitoring the cor-

rect valve setting

saves resources.

Rotary drives that ap-

propriately adjust the angle of the valve flap to

the desired flow amounts are used to control the

flow of fluids and gases. The current position of

the valve flap is monitored by positional feedback

sensors. Simple, binary feedback sensors can dis-

play two positions (OPEN and CLOSE).

An angle-measuring analog system such as the

PMI360D is capable of precisely measuring the

position of the valve flap and thus allows for a

much more exact dosage of the medium.

Positional feedback sensor on rotary drives

The geometric dimensions of the PMI360D are opti-

mized for standard application in rotary drives.

The PMI family provides two different types of applica-

tion with regard to functions:

• A switching sensor provides the option of 3 taught-in

signaling zones (S0-S2). Therefore another preferred

position (e.g. valve half-open = 45°) can be retrieved

in addition to the positions OPEN and CLOSE.

• The combined switching/measuring PMI provides

the option of an exact, angle-proportionate measure-

ment of the current valve position for the higher ap-

plication type. Moreover, the OPEN and CLOSE limit

positions can be fed back to the higher-level pro-

cess-control system through two separate switching

outputs.

By connecting UHF read/write heads to the IDENT Con-trol family, logistics applications with a large sensing range are also now possible. The compact UHF handheld readers are very fast, enable a sensing range of several meters and can be connected via an M12 plug, while the passive transponders are extremely cost-effective. They are therefore ideal for intralogistics.

All common frequencies can be connected to the IDENT-

Control system in mixed mode. Standardized operating,

the universal command structure for the PLC program,

and the sturdy, EMC-proof design with metal housing

make commissioning simple and safe. The range of read/

write heads has been extended with the addition of the

UHF family of antennas. The compact UHF antenna is easy

to connect via one M12 plug and has been well-received

in the field of intralogistics. Containers and pallets can

be identified as easily as car bodies in the automotive in-

dustry. Because passive data carriers in various industry

construction types as well as in the form of labels are inex-

pensively available and because we can achieve sensing

ranges up to 6 meters, this system is a real alternative to

the commonly used barcode. It features significant advan-

tages: It writes data; no direct visual contact is needed;

it is not sensitive to dirt; etc.

The clever technology of the read/write head transmits

on one frequency and the transponders respond on a free

channel in order to prevent distortion and interference.

Renewable energies are already making a considerable contribution to power production and active climate protection. Wind-power and solar plants can operate efficiently only when the internal control is optimally aligned.

Pepperl+Fuchs provides a wide range of products for monitoring the most varied processes at wind- and solar-power plants. The following list gives a few examples:

Using renewable energy

• The inductive angle-measurement system PMI360 monitors the rotating assembly at solar plants.

• Rotary encoders measure the rotational speed of the rotors/generators, the rotor blade position and azi-muth direction angle at wind-power plants.

• F99 inclination sensors monitor the inclination angles of solar panels.

• The WIS system transfers non-contact energy and data on a rotor.

Reliability in harsh ambient con-ditions is particularly important in these areas of application. Pepperl+Fuchs can draw on many years of experience in this area. The sensors have proven them-selves millions of times over.

Plant manufacturers, system integrators and component

manufacturers are faced with ever-higher standards of

functional safety due to an increase in the level of auto-

mation in machine and plant engineering. Improvements

to the functionality of conventional control systems are

required, especially the capacity to meet safety function

needs, such as in modern drive controllers. Secure rotary

encoders with functional safety have thus gained in impor-

tance. Pepperl+Fuchs GmbH responds to these needs with

The new Machine Directive 2006/42/EG

a view takes the complexity of

modern programmable electron-

ics into account. In order to ease

machine manufacturers into a

smooth transition toward the

safety requirements of the new

standards, a simple integration

of components is needed, even

in existing developments.

Pepperl+Fuchs GmbH responds to these needs with products that are

new concepts, are easily implemented, and cost-effectively integrated,

including products for high safety categories (SIL3, PLe).

The requirement for member states of the European Community to

implement the single European market directives has turned the new

Machine Directive 2006/42/EG into law. This Directive will become

binding no later than December 29, 2009. It will replace Machine Di-

rective 98/37/EG.

Article 5 (par. 1) of the Directive takes in all requirements made for the

commissioning of machines.

According to Article 5 of the new machine directive, machine manufac-

turers must meet, among other things, all safety and health-protection

requirements (Appendix I).

Within this context, listed standards such as EN ISO 13849-1 and

EN IEC 62061 (from the IEC 61508-derived sector standards for ma-

chine manufacturing) take effect. The deterministic approach of the

currently valid EN 954-1, which contrasts a corresponding system

behavior to the determined risk categories, is now complemented by

a probabilistic view of the safety functions. Moreover, the new stan-

dards EN ISO 13849-1 and EN IEC 62061 also include, among others,

the failure probabilities of the implemented components, since such

Continuity in a new type of company

Market proximity and flexibility are the most

important demands made on a forward-

looking distribution company that is part of a

globally-active organization.

In order to appropriately represent this mar-

ket proximity and flexibility within the legal

and organizational structure of a German

distributor, Pepperl+Fuchs has decided to

outsource German distribution for second

quarter of 2009 to one of its own companies –

Pepperl+Fuchs Vertrieb Deutschland GmbH.

The same German distributor will operate in

two areas of business – factory automation

and process automation. Long-standing sales

managers Rainer Niess and Jörg Schneider

will be the executive directors of the new dis-

tribution company. All contact persons will

remain as previously.

Within the newly-founded distribution com-

pany, the regional sales offices set up in 2008

in Mannheim, Friedberg, Wernau, Dortmund,

Hanover and Berlin will remain unchanged as

parts of the factory automation area. At a lo-

cal level, they will facilitate efficient commer-

cial and technical support, short trips and a

flat hierarchy.

By taking this step, Pepperl+Fuchs has cre-

ated another prerequisite for furthering its

success through innovation and proximity to

its customers.

Pepperl+Fuchs sets up a German distribution company and moves closer to its customers Hannover Messe Industrie
