From the Principal Welcome back everyone! I hope that all families have had an enjoyable break and
are ready for what is shaping to be a very exciting year
at Exeter High School. It was wonderful to see our
students so enthusiastic to be back at school on
Wednesday morning. I was absolutely thrilled to see all
of our students wearing the Exeter High School
uniform proudly and greeting their new teachers. As I
walked around the school visiting classes I was
impressed with how focussed and engaged students
were which shows that they are definitely ready for
another year of learning.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank our
amazing cleaning and grounds staff for making the school look simply amazing and ready for the return of
our students. Our new classrooms look fantastic and
students have settled into our new learning model very
well. I would also like to thank the office staff for their
hard work over the holidays and especially through
book sales.

students and staff about how good our students
look in their uniforms. Exeter has certainly become
a school that is renowned not only for our great
achievements, but also for setting the bar very high
in relation to how we look.
The Exeter High School School Association is the
governing board of our school. This group of
community, parent, staff and student
representatives make many of the decisions about
how our school operates and advise me as Principal
on a range of matters. One of the critical decisions
they have made is that school uniform is a
compulsory aspect of Exeter High School.
I need to stress that denim jeans or shorts and
hooded jumpers are not part of the school uniform at Exeter and should not be worn to school unless
we have a plain clothes day (this includes denim
shorts).
Exeter High School will endeavour to support any
families that are experiencing financial hardship.
Please contact our school office to discuss
alternative arrangements to assist you in purchasing
uniform.
School Values – we are a place for learning
At Exeter High School we want to ensure that our
young people have the very best of opportunities to
lay the foundations for a good life. We want our
school to be a place where every student must be
able to learn without interruption from others and
every teacher must be able to teach without
interruption from others. We have four very clear
School Values that determine how everyone is
expected to focus at our school:
Respect
Learning
Maturity
Acceptance
I ask that you support your son or daughter in
following these values in all their interactions and
learning sessions at Exeter. This will support the
learning outcomes for every single student to be
positive.
Communication Effective and Respectful communication between
home and school is vital to support our students’
successful engagement and participation in
education. Before the end of term core teachers
will endeavour to make contact with every parent
to introduce themselves and invite parents to
contact them if they have any concerns or
questions.
Our fortnightly newsletter is our major means of
communication to families and our wider community to
keep you up to date with what is happening in and
around our school. I urge parents/guardians to ensure
that you have received your newsletter either by email
or hard copy from your child. The newsletter is a
wonderful celebration of the achievements of our
students as well as a source of important information
for families.
Parents are encouraged to contact teachers and Grade
Leaders and Core teachers at the slightest cause for
any concern for students. This can be done in a range
of ways:
By making an appointment to meet with the
relevant staff member.
Calling them after 3.10 pm. Please note, that it is
extremely difficult for staff to take phone calls
from parents/guardians before school and at
break times as they are rostered on to a range of
duties. After school time is best.
A written note in student diary.
Early intervention and support for students is made so
much easier if we receive early notification from
families of any concerns (Please don’t “stew” on
things!).
I trust that information distributed at the end of last year and during book sales this year will ensure that
students are ready for school. However, if there are
any queries or concerns, we are happy to help and
these can be directed to the office or class teacher in
the first instance.
I’m really looking forward to working with you and
your child/children this year.
Mr Benjamin Frerk
PRINCIPAL
School Immunisations Dear Parents and Guardians,
West Tamar Council will be offering immunisations for Grade 7’s this year at your school. As you may already be aware, consent forms have been sent home with all Grade 7 students. All completed consent forms are to be returned to your school’s office by no later than 22nd February 2017. Please ensure you check your child’s immunisation record and read all of the information provided before completing the consent form. If you have any queries or require more information regarding the immunisations, please contact West Tamar Council’s Environmental Health Department on (03) 6323 9300.
Grade 7’s have made a fantastic, settled start to the school year. Their enthusiasm is evident in the way that they present themselves each day and in their application to tasks in class.
Exeter High has been fortunate with redevelopment work being conducted over the school holidays. The Grade 7 area is now a spacious, core dedicated, inspiring environment for students to achieve their best.
We are lucky to have a fantastic group of core teachers responsible for grade 7 this year: Mrs Kendal King, Mrs Bridie Youd, Mr Peter Page, Mrs Sharon Parish and Mr Stefan Lendvay.
An initiative for our Grade 7’s this year will be competing in a class teacher competition – The Grade Crusade. This competition will see classes competing for points in all aspects of school life going towards winning a shield which they can keep in their class for the following term. This competition will follow students through to the end of grade 10.
We have several important events coming up in the next couple of weeks: Monday 20th February 5.30pm – 7pm
Welcome B.B.Q. Wednesday 1st March – Friday 3rd March Grade 7 Camp.
We look forward to meeting you all at the Welcome B.B.Q.

Back to school thoughts from the school nurse
Starting a new school, changing classes, finding new friends and meeting new teachers can be overwhelming for young people as a new school year begins. Friendships are really important to teenagers for many reasons – from having a support network to feeling a sense of belonging and acceptance. As a parent, taking time to help your child build and nurture strong friendships will alleviate some of the difficulties faced during this period. Check out https://parents.au.reachout.com/skills-to-build/wellbeing/things-to-try-friendships to find out how you can help your teenager build positive friendships through this time.
LAUNCESTON YOUTH THEATRE ENSEMBLE ENROLMENTS OPEN
Have you always wanted to try an acting or drama
class? Would you like to perform on the stage? Do you want to meet wonderful new people, have fun and develop your confidence? Enrolments are open for our 2017 ensemble, for young people in grades Prep-12. Participating in theatre at a young age develops imagination and creative thinking, communication and social skills, and builds courage and confidence. At LYTE, you receive excellent acting training, great insight into theatre craft and professional practise, and will participate in exciting theatre workshops and productions. LYTE is a company for everyone, those who may wish to become actors and those who may not. No previous experience required. We’d love to have the opportunity to welcome you to our ensemble.
