Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Spanish Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (SENPE),the Local Organizing Committee has the pleasure and privilege to welcomeyou to the 34th Congress of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition andMetabolism (ESPEN) which will be held in Spain in the historic and culturalcity of Barcelona from the 8th to the 11th of September 2012.

In close collaboration with the members of ESPEN Committees, we havedesigned an attractive educational and scientific program, which broadly coversthe fields of nutrition and metabolism. In harmony with the motto of theCongress “Achieving goals in nutrition”, the Congress will address the practicalaspects of nutritional treatment, defining goals in nutrition care and presentingthe advances in the last years. We count with renowned international facultiesto join Barcelona for discussing the most recent data in their field of expertise.

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, with more than one million six hundredthousand residents, is located in the north east of Spain. The city is safe andfriendly, and it’s a nice place to go sightseeing and visiting wonderful museums.

The Congress will take place in the “International Convention Centre ofBarcelona” (CCIB), located in The Diagonal Mar Area, a new window to the sea.The CCIB is conveniently located, with more than 4,800 hotel rooms andrestaurants in walking distance, and within less than 10 minutes of the center ofthe old city by a direct subway line, bus, or by taxi.

When a European citizen buys any goods within the EU they pay an automatic tax called VAT (whichstands for Value Added Tax otherwise known as IVA in Spain) This tax is invisible to the customer theysimply pay the price of the item that is displayed in the shops. However all items have a VATcomponent which amounts to 18% in Spain excluding food items, books and optics which have a 7%VAT tax rate. The shops then pay the government back this VAT every quarter when they do theiraccounts - It's a round about way for the government to claim additional taxes from the people withoutthem knowing about it!

How to claim the TAX backWhen you arrive at the airport you must present you tax refund cheques at customs BEFORE you checkyour bags in. Customs may request to check the items before they stamp your cheques. Once yourcheques have been stamped by customs you can cash your cheques at any Bureau de Change in yourchosen currency.

TRAVELLING TO BARCELONAOne of the advantages of Barcelona airport is that it is really close by the center of city, at just 14 km.It is specifically located at El Prat del Llobregat, the town that gives the name ‘Aeroport del Prat’ to theairport, the second largest of the country after Madrid ‘Aeropuerto de Barajas’. The passenger traffic of2010 was about 30 million and the position of Barcelona El Prat Airport (IATA: BCN) of the busiest inthe world is 32.Depending on the airline that you are flying with, departing or landing, you are able to use one of thetwo terminals that the airport has. The biggest and the newest one is T1, finished at 2009. It has 101gates in its 545.000 m2 divided in the areas A, B, C, D and E.Terminal 2 (T2), the second most important, has 149.359 m2 with 48 gates and just 30 with finger-docks. It’s subdivided in T2A, T2B and T2C.

Transport from/to the airportAbout the transport from the airport, the passengers are able to use a rented Car, Taxi, Bus or Trainservices. There are several different transfer buses going to and from Barcelona Airport. The Aerobus is theBarcelona Airport express shuttle bus that takes people to and from the airport and the city centre. Theother buses that are available for transfer between the airport and centre are the TMB Airport BusNumber 46 and the Night Bus N17 (operated by MOHN). These other buses are cheaper; howeverthey are slightly slower, less frequent and provide less space for luggage. The Aerobus stops at various locations in Barcelona. The main bus stops in Barcelona City Centre areat Plaça Catalunya and Plaça Espanya which are also Barcelona's main transport hubs. At BarcelonaAirport there are stops in each of the three terminals.

Where and how to buy your tickets for the AerobusYou purchase your tickets for each Aerobus on the bus itself or, if you are travelling from T2, you canalso buy them from the automatic ticket vending machines at each stop outside the airport terminals(there are no ticket machines outside T1). We have been informed that the automatic vendingmachines for purchasing Aerobus tickets at T2 do not always function so be ready with cash to paythe driver.Journey Time for the Barcelona Airport Express Bus From the City Centre to Barcelona AirportAerobus Travel Time When Leaving From Plaça Catalunya: From Plaça Catalunya to BarcelonaAirport the journey time is approximately 40 minutes.Aerobus Travel Time When Leaving From Plaça Espana:From Plaça Espana to Barcelona Airport the journey time is approximately 25 minutes.Aerobus Travel Time When Leaving From Barcelona Airport:The journey time from Barcelona Airport to Plaça Espana is approximately 25 minutes. The journeytime from Barcelona Airport to Plaça Catalunya is approximately 45 minutes. With all travel times it is important to take into consideration that traffic may affect the length of thejourney. So if you have a flight to catch build in some time for delays and maybe catch an earlier busto be on the safe side.

FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT PASSAll delegates and accompanying persons are offered a public transport pass. To receive yourpass please exchange your “transportation voucher” for the pass at the Bag & Transportation passdelivery desk within the Registration area.
