Ten Tips for Reading at Home

Espinosa Express Page 2 of 15

http://drek8.dadeschools.net

1. Choose a quiet place that is free from distractions for your child to read. 2. Have your child read aloud to you every night. 3. As your child reads, point out spelling patterns like cat, hat, pat. 4. Ask your child to tell you in his/her own words what happened in the story. 5. Before getting to the end of the story ask your child what he/she thinks will happen and why. 6. Let your child see you reading for pleasure in your spare time. 7. Take your child to the library regularly and explore the children’s section together. 8. Offer special incentives to encourage your child to read. 9. On gift giving occasions give books that interest your child. 10. Extend your child’s positive reading experience. For example, if he/she likes elephants, take your child to the zoo to see an elephant.

1. Recognize that keeping firearms in your home may put you at legal risk as well as exposing you and your family to physical risk. In many states, parents can be held liable for their children's actions, including inappropriate use of firearms. If you do choose to keep firearms at home, ensure that they are securely locked, that ammunition is locked and stored separately, and that children know weapons are never to be touched without your express permission and supervision.

2. Take an active role in your children's schools. Talk regularly with teachers and staff. Volunteer in the classroom or library, or in after-school activities. Work with parent-teacher-student organizations.

3. Act as role models. Settle your own conflicts peacefully and manage anger without violence. 4. Listen to and talk with your children regularly. Find out what they're thinking on all kinds of topics.

Create an opportunity for two-way conversation, which may mean foregoing judgments or pronouncements. This kind of communication should be a daily habit, not a reaction to crisis.

5. Set clear limits on behaviors in advance. Discuss punishments and rewards in advance, too. Disciplining with consistency helps teach self-discipline, a skill your children can use for the rest of their lives.

6. Communicate clearly on the violence issue. Explain that you don't accept and won't tolerate violent behavior. Discuss what violence is and is not. Answer questions thoughtfully. Listen to children's ideas and concerns. They may bring up small problems that can easily be solved now, problems that could become worse if allowed to fester.

7. Help your children learn how to examine and find solutions to problems. Kids who know how to approach a problem and resolve it effectively are less likely to be angry, frustrated, or violent. Take advantage of "teachable moments" to help your child understand and apply these and other skills.

8. Discourage name-calling and teasing. These behaviors often escalate into fist fights (or worse). Whether the teaser is violent or not, the victim may see violence as the only way to stop it.

9. Insist on knowing your children's friends, whereabouts, and activities. It's your right. Make your home an inviting and pleasant place for your children and their friends; it's easier to know what they're up to when they're around. Know how to spot signs of troubling behavior in kids-yours and others.

10. Join your school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and work with other parents to develop standards for school-related events, acceptable out-of-school activities and places, and required adult supervision. Support each other in enforcing these standards.

11. Make it clear that you support school policies and rules that help create and sustain a safe place for all students to learn. If your child feels a rule is wrong, discuss his or her reasons and what rule might work better.

12. Join up with other parents, through school and neighborhood associations, religious organizations, civic groups, and youth activity groups. Talk with each other about violence problems, concerns about youth in the community, sources of help to strengthen and sharpen parenting skills, and similar issues.

1. Refuse to bring a weapon to school, refuse to carry a weapon for another, and refuse to keep silent about those who carry weapons.

2. Report any crime immediately to school authorities or school police. 3. Report suspicious or worrisome behavior or talk by other students to a teacher or counselor

at your school. You may save someone's life. 4. Learn how to manage your own anger effectively. Find out ways to settle arguments by

talking it out, working it out, or walking away rather than fighting. 5. Help others settle disputes peacefully. Start or join a peer mediation program, in which

trained students help classmates find ways to settle arguments without fists or weapons. 6. Mentor a younger student and be a role model and friend. You can make it easier for a

younger person to adjust to school and ask for help. 7. Start a school crime watch. Consider including a student patrol that helps keep an eye on

corridors, parking lots, and groups, and a way for students to report concerns anonymously. 8. Ask each student activity or club to adopt an anti-violence theme. The newspaper could run

how-to stories on violence prevention; the art club could illustrate costs of violence. Career clubs could investigate how violence affects their occupational goals. Sports teams could address ways to reduce violence that's not part of the game plan.

9. Welcome new students and help them feel at home in your school. Introduce them to other students. Get to know at least one student unfamiliar to you each week.

10. Start (or sign up for) a "peace pledge" campaign, in which students promise to settle disagreements without violence, to reject weapons, and to work toward a safe campus for all. Try for 100% participation.

11. Take pride and responsibility for your school. Each one of us plays a part in school safety. Be a part of the solution!

If your child has experienced any of the following events, they may be at risk for something called the Holiday Blues. Sadness is the most obvious sign of the holiday blues. But children also show the blues by withdrawing from their family, being irritable, uncooperative, aggressive and also verbally abusive. Helpful suggestions to assist your child with these difficult events are provided. Your school Guidance Counselor, TRUST Specialist, School Social Worker and School Psychologist are also available to assist upon your request.

DEATH IN THE FAMILY The trauma of losing a loved one is softened when children are surrounded by relatives during the holiday season. Family get-togethers with relatives are a wonderful way to help children feel connected and loved. Expect tears and words of missing the family member who has died. When tears surface over the loss, be supportive by expressing similar feelings and cry together. There is relief when members of a family experience their grief together.

Ask the children what they think mom or dad or the grandparent that they have lost would want them to do during this first holiday season without them and then do it.

Consider putting some time aside to visit the cemetery for prayers and flowers.

Put together a special album of photos to celebrate the life of the family member who has died. At an appropriate time look over the photos and recall the fun times of the past and talk of the person who everyone misses.

DIVORCE

Work out a schedule prior to the Holidays for sharing the children with each parent; so children know they will be with both parents and spared the experience of their parents arguing over them.

Refrain from quarreling in front of the children.

Refrain from saying disparaging things to the children about the other parent.

Each parent should plan a fun activity to help the children realize that they are still part of a family and there is now mom's house and dad's house.

LOSS OF INCOME There is an old saying that "the best things in life are free." Parents should remember this saying and look in the newspaper for all sorts of special events for the holiday that the family can enjoy together FREE or at a small cost.

Encourage everyone to make gifts this year.

Encourage relatives who normally give gifts, to give your child the one special gift they are wishing for.

Get together with another family in the same financial situation and make plans for creating fun.

Consider finding a way to give to a family or a charity that is less fortunate than your family.

Involve the family in making cookies, decorations and preparing the Holiday meals. PARENTS IN THE MILITARY Children whose parents are part of the armed services are especially affected during the holiday season.

Parents in the military can rely on relatives who are caring for the children to buy a special gift for their child so she/he will know it came from mom or dad.

E-mails and video clips can help children to know that their mom or dad is safe and okay and that next Christmas the family will be together.

Tape recorded messages or tape recorded bedtime stories are a good way for children to feel connected to their mom or dad.

The holiday blues can be very real for children, but with a little bit of thought and preparation, the holiday season can still be special for children who have recently experienced a sad event.

Kindergarten

First Grade

The theme for first grade classes is “Family and Friends”. Students are reading stories and poems about special times with friends and family. As we read, we are learning how to draw conclusions and how to compare and contrast. We are learning about special customs related to Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa as we nervously wait for a visit from a holiday friend. So, we are being especially good…and we hope you are too. Happy holidays from the first grade students and teachers of Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center.

http://drek8.dadeschools.net

During the month of November the kindergarten students went on an exciting adventure to Zoo Miami, where they had the opportunity to learn about animals and the habitat in which they live. As part of our Harvest Festival, the kindergarteners had their first Harvest Lunch. We dressed up in costumes that celebrated the change of season, carved pumpkins, and created many fun projects! Our November Thanksgiving Feast was a great success! Many of the students experienced their very first traditional Thanksgiving meal! We look forward to the month of December and all the fun activities that await us!

Second Grade

Second grade will be learning to subtract two digit numbers with and without regrouping in their mathematics class. In social studies, they will learn about Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. In science students will learn different sources of energy and the usage of energy. In reading students will Compare/Contrast, Monitor/Clarify, and make distinctions between Facts and Opinions.

Fifth Grade

The Fourth Grade students at Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center will be reading the story of The Polar Express. The story will be used to build students’ reading and writing skills. Later, we will attend a field trip to the Gold Coast Museum to learn more about how the railroad changed Florida’s history.

Fourth Grade

It’s hard to believe that the year is already coming to an end! The month of November brought new challenges, great ideas, and cool weather! Our fifth graders have learned, and continue to learn so much. In Reading we began Theme 3 – Voices of the Revolution. We learned about characters, real and fictitious, and all the challenges they faced during this difficult time. In Math we investigated how to balance equations, learned how to use substitution to solve equations, and finally compared and ordered integers. In Science we continued to learn about the different types of energy, as well as all the concepts related to weathering. We also took some time to remember and honor our Veterans. We learned about why we celebrate Veteran’s Day on November 11 th each year, and watched videos of the men and women who have served America. In addition to academics, we also showed community spirit by bringing in many food items to support the City of Doral Canned Food Drive for the needy. Let us continue the spirit of giving and being thankful, as we celebrate the coming New Year!

It has been a busy month for our third grade bunch. Students started working on their Science Fair projects, took their fall interim assessments, collected lots of canned goods to feed the needy and enjoyed a field trip to the Miami Art Museum. At the museum, students got the opportunity to explore paintings and artwork created by local artists. In their spare time, our little readers have been busy reading all the wonderful books they purchased at the book fair. With the holiday right around the corner, our third graders are excited about their upcoming book exchange and class celebrations.

In Art class, we will be transitioning from our studies involving the Art and Culture of Polynesia to the study of the Mexican Self-Portrait Artist Frida Kahlo. Students will have the opportunity to research and review the life of Frida Kahlo including how events took place in her life and how she responded to them through her artistic interests. We will then go on to develop self-portraits that reflect our features as well as our personalities and characteristics. Students will find new meaning in the Arts in terms of how Art can become a new language for expressing oneself. Students will share their artworks and join in on collective conversations between themselves and their classmates pertaining to how their 'new language' and self-portraits communicate their life events and convey their interests in the Arts.

Mr. Corey Black We are currently using Microsoft Power Point in my Computer Application class in order to complete our community service project. Students were divided into teams of two or three and asked to create a presentation about local volunteer programs, such as one at a local hospital. Students are using the Internet, local publications, or personal contacts to research volunteer opportunities in their community. Students in my Introduction to Computers class are currently creating a Microsoft Excel Worksheet named Candy is Dandy. Students will be given a Hands-on Assessment using Microsoft Excel where they will have

to input formulas and charts.
