The Equator As Seen By Mark Twain

“Afternoon. Crossed the Equator. In the distance it looked like a blue ribbon

stretched across the ocean. Several pas-sengers kodak’d it.”

– Mark Twain, More Tramps Abroad, 1897.When one thinks about the Equator,

one doesn’t necessarily think of Mark Twain. This remarkable author is more readily associated with the Mississippi River, Calaveras County and off-the-beaten-path spots in the southern United States.

Yet this brilliant writer, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Mis-souri, in 1835, did explore the far reaches of the world and recorded his impressions as he traveled along. In fact, he was once nicknamed the “Huckleber-ry Finn of foreign correspondents.”

Twain’s two-volume work, Following the Equator, was originally published in 1897 and is well worth reading for it allows us to see the world through this great humorist’s eyes. And this is a

journey well worth taking.

Life Along The RiverSamuel L. Clemens kicked about as a

kid in Hannibal, Missouri, before taking a job as a printer. Feeling a bit of the wanderlust even then, he signed on as a Mississippi River pilot in 1857. Follow-ing a five-year stint plying these muddy waters, Clemens headed west. He found employment with a newspaper in Vir-ginia City, Nevada.

The next stop was San Francisco where Clemens continued his writing. It was at this time that the author adopted the pseudonym “Mark Twain” which was a navigational term used during his days as a riverboat pilot.

In 1866, Twain spent four months in the Hawaiian Islands writing articles for a West Coast newspaper, the Sacramento Union. Those amazing observations are featured in Roughing It in the Sandwich Islands. His career took another interest-ing turn when he shifted his focus from the written word to the spoken word. Twain packed his bags again and took to the highway, but this time as a humor-ous lecturer.

More adventures were in store for this intrepid traveler — trips to the Holy Land and beyond. More celebrated works were also in store for Twain — The Innocents Abroad (1869); A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889); and his most famous works The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn (1884).

Sadly, Twain suffered financial reversals in 1893. This sorry state of affairs forced him to leave home once again. This time he was to lecture around the world and write about his travels in his important work Following the Equator (1897).

Following the EquatorWell, he did just that, sort of. Twain

began this odyssey in Paris where he had been living. In fact, his opening para-graphs of Following the Equator read:

“The starting point of this lecturing-trip around the world was Paris, where we had been living a year or two.

“We sailed for America, and there made certain preparations. This took but little time. Two members of my family elected to go with me. Also a carbuncle. The dictionary says a carbuncle is a kind of jewel. Humor is out of place in a dictionary.”

That seemed to set the tone for this memoir!

Quite the ItineraryWith a stopover in Hawaii, Twain

and his fellow travelers approached the Equator, as he put it, “on a long slant.” To quote from his book, “Those of us who had never seen the Equator are a good

deal excited. I think I would rather see it than any other thing in the world.”

Twain’s journey carried him to the Fijis, New Zealand, Australia, Tasma-nia, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), India, Mauritius, South Africa, Madeira and England, touching on many of the same destinations as we do without all the flourishes, of course. Though certainly, it was rich with boundless adventures.

Now should you be fortunate enough to get your hands on a copy of Twain’s remarkable travel diary Following the Equator with all his astute observations, historical footnotes and bits of humor, you shall be the luckier for it. Savor his memorable tales and endless yarns as if they were your own.

Then pause to imagine how delighted Mark Twain might be to learn that you are reading this string of stories 100 years after they were written. I believe he would be ever so tickled.

Such underwater vision capabil-ity will enable Crystal Endeavor’s captain and bridge officers to detect potential hazards and sea life far in advance to navigate appropriately and prevent any adverse situations.

The technology also operates in shallower depths allowing safe navigation in unchartered waters, which will give Crystal Endeav-or’s guests an opportunity to experience rarely visited areas. The PC6-designated ship will also be outfitted with offshore dynamic

positioning capabilities, enabling the ship to remain in one place utilizing GPS and its thrusters, rather than dropping anchor, avoid-ing any potential damage to delicate reefs.

“It is imperative that every element of Crystal Endeavor be designed with precision and careful foresight, always keeping the safety of our guests and the respectful navigation of the waters we sail as the top priority,” said Peter Andersson, Genting’s vice president of newbuilding. “The FarSounder technology equips us to do exactly that, and then some, as Crystal Endeavor navigates uncharted waters around the world. The data and capabilities provided by the program will not only inform our captain and of-ficers of important navigational data, but also provide insights that will enrich the journey for our guests.”

In her inaugural 2020 season, Crystal Endeavor will sail expedition voyages through Japan and the Russian Far East; Antarctica via the Ross Sea; New Zealand and Tasmania; Australia and the Great Barrier Reef; and Borneo, Indonesia and the Philippines. In 2021, Crystal Endeavor will add New Zealand’s Sub-Antarctic Islands; Alaska and the Aleutian Islands; Norway and the United Kingdom; Canary Islands, Atlantic and South America to her repertoire, as well as an extraordinary voyage through the rarely traveled Northeast Passage.

"FarSounder is honored to be a part of Crystal Endeavor. This luxury expedition vessel demands the best of everything, includ-ing the best safety equipment available," FarSounder CEO Cheryl M. Zimmerman explains. "FarSounder sonars have led the way to the furthest southern point in the Antarctic ever traveled by a cruise ship. Now we look forward to our sonars aiding Crystal Endeavor’s captain and crew on their journeys to the farthest reaches of the world."

The German-built Crystal Endeavor is currently under construction at the MV WERFTEN Shipyard in Stralsund, Germany. The largest, most spacious luxury expedition yacht in the industry, Crystal Endeavor will feature elegantly casual, expansive public spaces; all-suite guest accommodations; Michelin-inspired dining options including Master Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s Umi Uma & Sushi Bar; full-service Crystal Life Salon & Spa and state-of-the-art Fitness Center. Expedition-specific amenities and spaces will enhance guests’ experience, including designated “mud rooms” and helicopter lounge.
