    St. Peter by-the-Lake Episcopal Church

    Welcomes you

    Cordial Welcome:

We welcome all who worship today at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter by-the-Lake.

Visitors are asked to sign the guest register in the Narthex. Everyone is invited to the

Parish Hall for food and fellowship immediately following the service.

    Communion:

Visitors accustomed to receiving Holy Communion in their own church are welcome to

do so at St. Peters. Also, if one is unable to come to the altar rail, contact an Usher prior

to the service and communion will be brought to you.

    Worship:

Worship in our Episcopal Church community should be characterized by a combination

of both tolerance and respect for others. If during worship you need to exit the nave

(sanctuary) or return, please consider the appropriate times to return during the liturgy:

times of congregational singing (hymns) or speaking (the creed); or at the peace. Please

try to refrain from leaving or entering during times of prayer/confession and during the

sermon. Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you.

    Children:

Worship in our Episcopal Church Community should be characterized by a combination

of both tolerance and respect for others. Children are always welcome in worship, but if

your child should become 'inconsolable', please consider quietly moving into the Narthex

or Fotinos Hall until your little one 'settles down'. Remember that we have a fully staffed

nursery (infants 2 yrs.) downstairs for your convenience.

    Want to know more?

Please speak to a greeter or a member of the clergy to get more information. You can

also visit us online at our parish website, www.saintpeterbythelake.net, and find us on

    Facebook and Twitter.

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant: O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that

when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name,

and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and

reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: Acts 2:42-47 Reader: Those who had been baptized devoted themselves to the apostles'

teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being

done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things

in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute

the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much

time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food

with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of

all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those

    who were being saved.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to Gods people.

    People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 23 (8:30am service below. 10:30 psalm is sung, see next page)

1 The Lord is my shepherd; *

I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *

and leads me beside still waters.

3 He revives my soul *

and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.

4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I shall fear no evil; *

    for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *

you have anointed my head with oil,

and my cup is running over.

6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, *

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

PSALM 23 REFRAIN: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.

REFRAIN: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.

1 The Lord is my shepherd; *

I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *

and leads me beside still waters. REFRAIN: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.

3 He revives my soul *

and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.

4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I shall fear no evil; *

    for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me. REFRAIN: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.

5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *

you have anointed my head with oil,

and my cup is running over.

6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, *

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. REFRAIN: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.

THE SECOND READING: 1 Peter 2:19-25

Reader: It is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong,

what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it,

you have God's approval. For to this you have been called, because

Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should

    follow in his steps.

  • 6

    He committed no sin,

and no deceit was found in his mouth.

When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did

not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He

himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we

might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For

you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the

shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to Gods people.

    People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN Savior, like a shepherd lead us Hymnal 708 Please stand.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL: John 10:1-10 Gospeller: Jesus said, Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the

sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a

bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The

gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls

his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all

his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they

know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from

him because they do not know the voice of strangers. Jesus used this

figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was

    saying to them.

So again Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the

sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep

did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be

saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes

only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and

    have it abundantly.

Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor ~ (Silence follows the Sermon) ~

THE NICENE CREED 358 We believe in one God,

    the Father, the Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

    the only Son of God,

    eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

    true God from true God,

    begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

    he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

    and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate:

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

    in accordance with the Scriptures;

    he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

    Leader and People:

    Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

    in thought, word, and deed,

    by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

    We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

    have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

    THE HOLY COMMUNION

    THE OFFERTORY

HYMN Doxology Dix Praise God from whom all blessings flow,

Praise Him all creatures here below,

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts,

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (Eucharistic Prayer B) 367 Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

    People: And also with you.

    Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere

to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and

Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever

sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

    SANCTUS S-129

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

    Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

    Hosanna in the highest.

    The people stand or kneel.

Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling

of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the

prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your

Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from

the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy

to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error

into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

  • 11

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took

bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and

gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body,

which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given

thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you:

This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you

and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink

it, do this for the remembrance of me.

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

    Celebrant

and People: We remember his death,

    We proclaim his resurrection,

    We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord

of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon

these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of

Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your

Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him,

being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time,

put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to

that heavenly country where, with [__________ and] all your

saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and

daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all

creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all

honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

    People: AMEN.(Danish 3-fold)

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior As our Savior Christ

Christ has taught us, has taught us,

we are bold to say, we now pray,

    THE LORDS PRAYER 364

Our Father, who art in heaven,

    hallowed be thy Name,

    thy kingdom come,

    thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

  • 12

Lift up our eyes and see His face,

    And His grace forever.

    May the Lord, Mighty Lord

    Bless and keep us forever

    And forgive us our trespasses,

    as we forgive those

    who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

    but deliver us from evil.

    For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

    for ever and ever. Amen.

    THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD Celebrant: [Alleluia.] Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

People: Therefore let us keep the feast. [Alleluia.]

A Word From Rev. Dr. Ron Taylor

Persistence in Prayer Persistence in prayer is the key theme that runs throughout Luke and Acts. This theme is demonstrated by Jesus actions throughout the gospel, is taught explicitly in one of the unique parables of Luke (the persistent widow), and is highlighted in the ways that Luke edits his gospel. In the book of Acts, this theme is demonstrated by the actions of Peter, Paul, and the early community of faith. Throughout Luke and Acts, persistence in prayer is not a matter of persuading a reluctant God, but rather a matter of disciples remaining faithful in all circumstances and situations. In this interval between the day of the Crucifixion and the day of Pentecost, not all our prayers are or can be answered. Persistence in prayer is how we remain faithful as we await the fulfillment of the Gospel message. (E. Glenn Hinson, Persistence in Prayer in Luke-Acts 2007) Faithfully, Father Ron

    EAST LINCOLN PREGNANCY CARE CENTER

As many of you know, St. Peter's has been highlighting and sponsoring East Lincoln Pregnancy

Care Center through our Mission/Outreach Committee during the month of May each year. Please

see the large article near the back of this week's bulletin for more details.

As part of that support, we will once again be filling baby bottles (similar to what we do with our

UTO boxes). Starting next week on Mother's Day, May 14, please consider taking a baby bottle and

filling it with coins whenever you think about your children, grandchildren, neighborhood

children, nieces, nephews, etc. We all know they have the ability to

leave us smiling with joy, crying from happiness or sadness, or

speechless in amazement or disbelief. Overall they add richly to our

lives, and ELPCC is a ministry that celebrates life and children. This

fundraiser will run for two weeks only and end on Sunday, May 28,

2017. Thank you for your participation.

    EAST LINCOLN PREGNANCY CARE CENTER

Its that time of year again when Mission Outreach supports the East Lincoln Pregnancy Care

Center. This ministry was founded in 1998. I am in my fourth year of volunteering at the Center

and want to let you know about the support it provides to its clients. This ministry has all the

necessities like baby food, diapers, wipes, clothing, furniture, toys, etc. as well as ongoing

education modules that help its clients become better parents. As a young mom, I would have

found all this information and support very helpful. As with most new parents, I had advice and

suggestions from my parents and in-laws, but basically I had to fly by the seat of my pants and

learn by trial and error. These young parents have the opportunity to watch instructional

videos, complete question sheets to be sure they are learning the material, ask questions of the

volunteers, and generally discuss any problems or issues that may arise. These videos cover the

subjects of nutrition, safety, behavioral problems, budgeting, meal planning many of the issues

    involved in everyday family life.

East Lincoln Pregnancy Care Center is supported by area churches; grants obtained from Wal-

mart, Lincoln County Community Foundation, and the State of North Carolina; and by three

fundraising events held each year the baby bottle boomerang held at various times of the year

at area churches, a banquet held in early April (this years banquet raised over $60,000 for the

ministry), and a walk/run/ride event held in early September. St. Peter by the Lake will once

again this year be participating in the baby bottle boomerang beginning on Mothers Day and

concluding two weeks later. This fundraiser is similar to the United Thank Offering boxes you

can fill the baby bottles with loose change whenever you are thinking about, proud of, pleased

by, aggravated by, or anything else related to children, grandchildren, or life in general since this

ministry celebrates life!! The baby bottles will be available on Mothers Day, and I would ask

that they be returned no later than Sunday, May 28th.

If you have any questions, please see me or call me at 704-489-0618, and I will be glad to assist

you. Thank you in advance for your support of this worthy ministry. Diane Johnson
