CHORAL INTROIT “Hodie, Christus natus est” Michael Bedford Please stand, as you are able, as the Entrance Hymn begins.

ENTRANCE HYMN Hymnal 83 “O come, all ye faithful” v. 1, 2, 3, and 6 (Adeste Fideles) ADVENT WREATH CANDLE LIGHTING Reader This is the eve of Christmas, a time when our longing for God’s presence is fulfilled.

(We light all four Advent candles.) Reader Christmas is when we honor and remember the birth of the Christ Child. The hope, peace, joy and love of the entire world are fully realized in this tiny baby, sent to live among us as a human being and to walk with us on the paths of our lives.

(We light the white Christ candle.)

People O Emmanuel, God with us, let your light dispel the darkness of the world.

Presider Beloved in God, as we celebrate the birth of the Holy Child, let the light of Christ so enter our hearts and minds, that with simple faith and true hope, we may, at this time, hasten to Bethlehem to see the Baby lying in a manger. OPENING ACCLAMATION Presider Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen. COLLECT FOR PURITY The Presider says

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. SONG OF PRAISE Hymnal 96 “Angels we have heard on high” v. 1 and 2

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Presider God be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray.

O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. FIRST READING ISAIAH 9:2-7

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

Page 3: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

those who lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined.

You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.

For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;

authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace

for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it

with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Lector Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM

Let us read together from Psalm 96.

1 Sing to God a new song; * sing to God all the whole earth.

2 Sing and bless God’s holy Name; * proclaim the good news of salvation from day to day.

3 Declare God’s glory among the nations * God’s wonders among all peoples.

4 For God is great and greatly to be praised; * more to be feared than all gods.

Page 4: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

4

5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is God who made the heavens.

6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!

7 Ascribe to God, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to God honor and power.

8 Ascribe due honor to God’s holy Name; * bring offerings and come into God’s courts.

9 Worship the Most High in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before God.

10 Tell it out among the nations that God reigns! * God has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved, and will judge the peoples with equity.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein.

12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before God, who will come, * who will come to judge the earth.

13 God will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with truth.

SECOND READING TITUS 2:11-14

A reading from the letter to Titus.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God. SEQUENCE HYMN Hymnal 87 “Hark the herald angels sing” Please stand, as you are able. GOSPEL LUKE 2: 1-14, 15-20

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to

Page 5: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

5

be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON Please be seated for the sermon.

Silence is kept after the sermon. THE CREED Please stand as you are able.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

Page 6: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

6

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Leader Lord God, ruler of the universe, we thank you that you hear us when we pray. We are grateful for

all your gifts to us, especially the gift of your son who came to live a human life with us. As you guided the Magi to Bethlehem by a star, guide us to come joyfully to you.

(We pause, making space for prayer.)

Glory to God in the highest People And peace to all people on Earth. Leader We pray on this Christmas Eve for our world. We pray for those who govern and hold positions

of authority among the nations. Lord, you sent your news of peace and goodwill to shepherds, and sent them to see the babe lying in a manger. Let your good news be fulfilled everywhere on earth, for all people.

(We pause, making space for prayer.)

Glory to God in the highest People And peace to all people on Earth. Leader We pray for your church; we pray especially for our Bishop, Megan, and for all who serve Christ

and build up the Beloved Community. By your Spirit strengthen your people for their work and ministry. As you sent your angels to share the good news, send us to show your light to the world.

(We pause, making space for prayer.)

Glory to God in the highest People And peace to all people on Earth. Leader We pray for one another, for our grandparents, parents, children and friends, through whom we

learn to love and be loved. We thank you for all who care for us as Joseph cared for his family, and we ask you to give us your love in our hearts to share with one another.

(We pause, making space for prayer.)

Glory to God in the highest People And peace to all people on Earth. Leader We pray for those who are sorrowful, distressed, or lonely. We pray for all people who have to

be separated from loved ones on this holy night. We ask you to comfort us as Mary comforted

Page 7: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

the Baby Jesus. We ask you for the grace to serve you as we find you in the poor, the hungry, the lonely, or the sick.

(We pause, making space for prayer.) Glory to God in the highest People And peace to all people on Earth. Leader We pray for those who have died and for those who mourn. Holy Jesus, we know that you came into this world to bind up the wounds of the broken-hearted, and we ask for the strength and faith to continue that work, until that day when we are all reunited around your heavenly throne. (We pause, making space for prayer.)

Glory to God in the highest People And peace to all people on Earth. Celebrant Prince of Peace and Mighty Counselor, may we come to worship you with the shepherds,

proclaim you with the angels, seek you with the wise men, offer ourselves to you with Joseph and Mary, and rejoice in your love, O Christ, who live and reigns with the Father and the Spirit,

now and forever. Amen.

Page 8: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

The Presider continues It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord; because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS Presider and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Please kneel or stand, as you are able. Then the Presider continues

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and maker of all.

Jesus stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Presider and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Presider continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, Almighty God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Christ. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Savior. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, (first in Spanish and then in English,) People and Presider

Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Presider breaks the consecrated bread or host, saying

Presider Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Presider says The Gifts of God for the People of God. ABOUT RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome at God’s table, children included. Gluten-free Communion hosts are available; please ask. Wine is being served exclusively via intinction (rather than directly from the chalice) and only at one station; the priest will dip your host into the chalice of wine and then offer it to you. If you would prefer to receive bread only, there is a separate station for that. The customary response to the words “The Body of Christ, the Bread of Heaven” is “Amen.” Crossing your arms over your chest indicates that you would like to receive a blessing instead of Communion.

COMMUNION HYMN Hymnal 115 “What child is this?” Hymnal 109 “The first Nowell” When everyone has received Communion, we will light candles and sing “Silent Night” together. You may kneel, sit, or stand for this hymn. Please stand, as you are able, for the Post-Communion Prayer and Blessing. POST-COMMUNION HYMN Hymnal 111 “Silent Night” (Stille Nacht)

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER After Communion, the Presider says

Let us pray. Presider and People Almighty and everliving God,

Page 10: The Episcopal Church of St. Martin Christmas Eve

10

we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Christ, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. A CHRISTMAS BLESSING The Priest blesses the people, saying May Christ, who by his incarnation gathered into one things on earth and things in heaven, fill you with joy and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. CLOSING HYMN Hymnal 100 “Joy to the World” DISMISSAL Deacon Let us go forth in the name of Christ. People Thanks be to God. POSTLUDE “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing” F. ABBREVIATED ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS AND THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 26, 2021

For the full announcements, visit www.churchofstmartin.org

Bishop Curry, Afghan Refugees, & Christmas Offering: With thanks to those who have given already, the 2021 Christmas Offering Committee invites you to consider a Christmas gift to Opening Doors, Inc. While we celebrate the season, volunteers from this Sacramento-based nonprofit are working 24/7 to comfort, support, and help 1,000 newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan adjust to their new life in our diocese and surrounding communities. Presiding Bishop and Primate, Michael Curry, offers encouragement in a way that only he can:

“Christmas stories are reminders that Jesus came to show us how to love as God loves. And one of the ways we love as God loves is to help those who are refugees, those who seek asylum from political tyranny, poverty, famine, or other hardship. And that work goes on for refugees from Afghanistan and from other places around the world. The Christian vocation as Jesus taught us is to love as God loves. And in the name of these refugees, let us help all refugees. God love you. God bless you. And, this Christmas, may God hold us all in those almighty hands of love.”

You may donate online on St. Martin’s website (https://churchofstmartin.org), send a check to the church office, or place your check in the Offertory Basket at upcoming services. Please specify Christmas Offering on the memo line of checks. Thank you so much! Bob Polkinghorn, Lynn Zender, Alessa Johns.
