WEEKLY REFLECTION

The Epiphany

This weekend, we celebrate with the Church, the

Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The word Epiphany comes from a Greek verb

meaning "to reveal." In this celebration, there are

four events in which God has chosen to reveal

himself. The feast celebrates the Baptism of the

Lord, Christ's first miracle (the changing of the wa-

ter into wine at Cana), the Nativity of Christ, and

the visitation of the Magi.

The most important of these events is the Baptism

of Our Lord. Here the Spirt of the Lord descends

upon him, and we hear the voice of God say, "This

is my Beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”

The celebration of the Epiphany is a good time for

us to sit in the presence of God and listen to him

say, "You are my beloved child, with you, I am well

pleased." Despite anything that we conjure up in

our minds, God says this to each and every one of

us. The perfect New Year's Resolution is to re-

mind ourselves that we are God's beloved child

and in us he is well pleased.

It is certain that God is ready to reveal something

new to you and me this New Year. To receive it,

we must be open to the same Spirit that descended

upon Jesus and trust that God does want to reveal

himself to us.

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY If you know someone who is housebound and would like to receive a visit from one of the priests, please call the parish office at 529-1477, ext. 224.

BECOME A PART OF THE FAMILY To become a member of the parish, please com-plete the registration form found on the parish web-site (www.jesuitchurch.net) by selecting tabs enti-tled “I’m New” and “I’m New to the Parish.”

CHURCH TOURS A 30-minute docent-led tour of our church takes place every Saturday beginning at 3:15 p.m. Also, by contacting the parish office, tours can be arranged for visiting groups at other times as well.

PREPARATION FOR BAPTISM The next baptism preparation class for parents and godparents takes place this Thursday, the 12th, at 5:00 p.m. in the parish rectory. To register, please call the parish office (529-1477, ext. 224) and leave a message. Baptism at Immaculate Conception is usually celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sun-days of the month, although other arrangements are possible. Please consult the parish website.

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION Our parish sponsors programs to prepare those in school to make their First Communion or Confirma-tion. (You do not need to be a parishioner to partici-pate.) Information about the programs can be found on the parish website, through which you can also register. FYI, our Confirmation ceremony is sched-uled for Wednesday evening, April 26. First Com-munion will take place on Sunday, May 14.

VISITING IMMACULATE CONCEPTION? Welcome! We are very happy you are with us dur-ing this blessed season!

PARISH RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE Help to build a “culture of life” by supporting the work of our parish’s Respect Life Committee. For more information, contact committee coordinator, Paige Breard, at [email protected].

AGAIN, A TREMENDOUS THANK YOU… … to all who showed great generosity in preparing our church for Advent and Christmas, as well as to those who worked hard to prepare beautiful experi-ences of liturgy and music for these sacred seasons. Also, the Good Shepherd School and the Harry Tompson Center extend a special thank-you to those who participated in the Giving Trees.

THIS SUNDAY Sunday Morning Coffee & Donuts (following the 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Masses) resumes today in our renovated, although not-quite-completed, Lenes Hall. We will also mark the Epiphany with a wine & cheese social after the 7:30 p.m. Mass.

BUT THE WORK IS NOT QUITE FINISHED! Tomorrow (Monday) afternoon, beginning at 12:30 p.m. (i.e. after the noon Mass), we will take down our Christmas decorations and store them away for another year. Because many hands make for lighter labor… help is much appreciated. No need to RSVP — just show up!

LITURGICAL MINISTRY If you are interested in becoming a lector, extraordi-nary minister of Holy Communion, hospitality minis-ter (especially at the 11 a.m. Mass), or server, please let Fr. Brauninger or Fr. Reale know.

LORD, TEACH ME TO PRAY Downtown Men’s Part I Group Forming

Lord Teach Me to Pray is a three-part prayer series based on Ignatian Spirituality. In Part I, participants pray daily with passages from scripture pertaining to a Christian virtue and then meet once a week in small groups for an hour or so to pray and faith share with the assistance of a trained facilitator. Starting January 26 and continuing for 12 Thursdays, part I will be offered in Bywater at 7 p.m. For more information, or to register, contact Daniel Cogswell at 234-3113 or visit www.lordteachmetopray.com.

YOUNG ADULT HELP NEEDED! Young adults (folks in their 20s or 30s, single or mar-ried) are needed as discussion leaders for the small group discussions which are built into the six ses-sions of our parish Confirmation preparation pro-gram which takes place on the Sundays (5-7 p.m.) of Lent. The task itself is quite simple, but the impact can be significant. If interested in learning more about this opportunity for service, please contact Fr. Jason Brauninger, in person, by phone, or by email.

Grant, we beseech You, Lord God,

that we who have been favored by

the prompt succor of the

Virgin Mother of Your Divine Son

in war, in disasters, in epidemics

and illness,

may continue to merit

her protection by fidelity

to your Word and to your Law.

Through Our Lord Jesus Christ,

Your Son,

Who lives and reigns with You

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

One God, forever and ever.

Amen.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor

Patroness of the City of New Orleans

and the State of Louisiana

Feast Day: January 8

The mosaics depicting Our Lady of Prompt

Succor and Our mother of Perpetual Help

are made of Venetian glass and were

installed in our church in 1930.

At the bottom of the mosaic of Our Lady

of Prompt Succor, two events associated

with Mary’s intercession are depicted:

the New Orleans fire of 1812, which

destroyed most of the city but left the

Ursuline convent standing; and,

American troops under the leadership of

Andrew Jackson defeating British troops

in the 1815 Battle of New Orleans.

It is an important ministry of our parishioners to keep before God those who are in need of prayer, including the men and women serving in the military as well as our police officers, who often risk their lives in the line of duty.

WEDDING BANNS
