EpiphanyIn non-Christian religions, usu-

ally referring to a moment when a person realizes their faith and or connects this realization with the intention of a deity

EpiphanyIn Christian circles it is the festival held on or near Janu-ary 6 that honors the journey of three Eastern Kings who visit Jesus and realize his unique identity.

Epiphany truly is one of my favorite moments in our Christian culture. The word has its origins in the ancient Greek culture, probably as far back as 800 BC, but the Christian experience has given the term universal and spiritual depth. As Christianity has so powerfully done in countless other circles, a term, word or concept now takes on additional and deeper meaning.

That depth comes from an intriguing story involving fi ve kings, not just three. Three of them are open to the pos-sibility that there is a new and more powerful King. One, who in his grave insecurity, is threatened by the possi-bility of any other King and the ONE KING who will live forever, but appears in the innocence that you and I once appeared in.

The story starts with a poetic prediction from the prophet Isaiah. Personifying the City of Jerusalem itself as a star he predicts, “...Jerusalem shall be radiant…nations shall walk by your light and kings by your shining radiance, your heart shall throb and overfl ow for the riches…..brought before you.” Matthew then tells us that after the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem something very special happened. Using the word Behold like a trumpet blast announcing signifi cance, three inquisitive kings arrived at a destination they assumed was correct. They are loud and public in their questioning, “Where is the newborn King?” Herod gets wind of this royal hunt and his insecu-rity is fanned. He commissions his fellow kings with false intention backed by false promises. He is inquisitive for a different, conniving reason. Nevertheless the eastern kings are put back on the right track in search of the real king.

They are led by a star, and as we all know the stars have magic powers. They bring us light from far away. They

beckon to us from the celestial mystery. They direct sailors and they mesmerize lovers. They illumine the dark night. They are simply one of the most intriguing things created by God. Jimmy Buffett croons in his song Oysters and Pearls, “...It’s method and it’s madness, we are of the stars.”

A special star guides these determined Magi, and I regu-larly point out important things about their journey. They do not journey alone. They travel with others. They hold in their hands gifts that represent the land and story that has formed them. They know the stars, but for as much as they know them, they also know that this star is special. They know the celestial apparitions and even in their vast knowledge they somehow allow themselves to be led by this one magnifi cent star. This one has caught their attention and intrigues them. They start from sepa-rate places and the special star brings their journey to-gether. They merge into one small caravan. They keep their eyes on the star. They hold gifts in their hands and their gut tells them they are being led to something magi-cal. They are very important people, yet they are humble enough to be open to even greater power. Undoubt-edly the journey takes days if not weeks. Imagine them talking and sharing at night, wondering and calculating the details of this star. The assumption throws them off course. They meet a fake king that humans revere and somehow trust that he had ill will for the real King.

They know the stars, but they never confuse this star with its purpose. They keep their eyes on the star but realize IT is not the destination, the baby is. The im-portance of the star is that it leads them to their savior. When they arrive at the baby King, they give away their treasures.

The story spawns questions. What are your gifts? Who do you travel with? What gifts do you give away? Who do you give them to? What is your star?

I won’t be with you this weekend because my Alma Ma-ter, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, is dedicating a brand new arena for the Basketball and Hockey Teams to play in. Former players have been invited back to join in the festivities. I will then remain in Omaha and do my annual 8 day silent directed retreat, this time at Creighton University, also in Omaha. Please pray for me during this important time of quiet and discernment. I highly recom-mend that all of you do a silent directed retreat every year, and we are lucky to have a great resource so close to us with experts in this profound spiritual experience. The Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House about a mile west of downtown Barrington on Lake- Cook Road holds silent directed retreats on a regular basis. Just Google them.

Lectionary Based Small Christian Communities are a journey of faith for adults designed to strengthen and nourish the faith of their members. In these communi-ties, 4 to 10 people meet as small church using Lectionary (Sunday Mass Read-ings) based resources provided by the parish. The members gain new insights into the Scriptures by reading them together in the group, listening to refl ections on the Scriptures from a DVD and discussing the faith sharing questions based on the readings.

These Lectionary Based Small Christian Communities are the paradigm of faith formation for the parish that allow participants the opportunity to move more deeply into participation in Sunday worship.

Santo Nina de Cebu Fiesta & Sinulog Celebration Saturday, January 16th 1 PM The Santo Niño de Cebu is the oldest miraculous celebrated relic of the child Jesus in the Philippines. It was given in 1521 as a baptismal gift by a Portuguese explorer & marked the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines. The image has survived battles, fires, wars and several calamities. It is housed in a minor basilica in Cebu City, Philippines.

Filipinos celebrated the feast of Sto. Nino, the Little Child Jesus, every 3rd Saturday of January followed by Sinulog festival. People dressed in native costumes bearing the image of the Santo Niño dance on the streets with a level of energy reminiscent of the Mardi Gras festival.

Our fiesta celebration will start with a Novena at 1 PM followed by a procession and Holy Mass. There will be a blessing ceremony of the Santo Nino images.

Mass will be followed by a reception at the Social Center with Filipino foods & Sinulog dance festival. All are welcome

Pope Francis has issued new guide-lines for the processing of Decrees of Nullity (also known as “annulments”). These new guidelines take effect on December 8th, the feast of the Immacu-late Conception, a holy day of obliga-tion. The Tribunal will implement these new guidelines. Dr. Jim Papandrea returns to Bible Journey on January 6, 2016!Our Bible Journey program was divided into three parts with three excellent teachers this year. Fr. Joji’s portion is coming to an end in December and in January we welcome Dr. Jim Papandrea, a former Holy Family Director who is currently teaching as Assistant Professor of Church History at Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL. Jim was the original creator of our Bible Journey program and his passion for teaching about the early Church is inspiring. He is truly a gifted speaker, teacher and friend and we are blessed to be able to offer this 7 week session with him. Jim’s topic will be based on one of his many published books, Seven Revolutions: How Christi-anity Changed the World and Can Change it Again.

Our fi nal Bible Journey session will be a 5 week session with outstanding scholar, author and teacher, Fr. Jim McIlhone, Ph.D. on “Parables of Jesus” beginning in March. Fr. McIlhone serves as the Director of Biblical Formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago and is the recipient of many academic honors. He is well known for his seminars, missions and days of renewal. Mark your calendar for his session begining on March 2, 2016.

Celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany Family Style 1. The gift of a second chance

It’s the year of mercy and now more than ever ` we need to believe in and invest in giving

ourselves and everyone we love the gift of a second chance.

Who in your family needs a fresh start? For whom can you ‘wipe the slate clean’?

2. Have an epiphany or Be an epiphany Today we celebrate the feast of Epiphany. Epiphany means “to show,” “to make known” or “to reveal.”

Who do you need to show more of yourself to in your family? Who in your family do you need to see with new eyes? Who in your family is trying to become who they are meant to be and needs

encouragement or support to do so?

3. Follow the star At the heart of our worship today is the wonderful story of the Magi, guided by a star, a heavenly beacon that draws them to discover where ‘the glory of the Lord shines.’

Where is your own heart leading you? Where in your relationship with spouse, child, parent, or sibling are you

called to see God’s presence? Who in your family needs your support to follow their heart’s desire?

4. Be a blessing in the lives of those you love

Who in your family needs recognition, encouragement? Who in your family deserves your thanks? How do you show those you love that your appreciate them?

5. Worship together The magi were foreigners yet upon seeing the star at its rising they came to kneel before the Christ-child to do him homage. Come all ye faithful, come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

We begin work on this production Sunday, Jan. 10, during large group at the evening class session, 5:30-7:00. The Living Stations of the Cross will be presented on Friday, March 4, 2016 immediately following the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry.

Catholic Social Teaching – United States Catholic Conference of BishopsOver the next 12 months, all seven themes will be highlighted. The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about build-ing a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. Modern Catholic social teaching has been articulated through a tradition of papal, conciliar and episcopal documents. The depth and richness of this tradition can be understood best through a direct reading of these documents. In these brief refl ections, we highlight several of the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition.

Rights and Responsibilities - The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities--to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

The inviolability of the person which is a refl ection of the absolute inviolability of God, fi nds its primary and fundamental expression in the inviolability of human life. Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights-for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture- is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination. Holy Family hosts a PADS site for our homeless friends to provide them with a nutritious meal and

a safe and warm place to sleep. Be aware that our guests arrive on food, on bikes as well as in automo-biles. They are traveling along Palatine Road in the

darkness of the evening hours and are diffi cult to see at times. Please drive slowly and use extra caution as you leave the church through the parking lot and onto Palatine Road. We want our guests to arrive safely.

This fall we began the thirteenth Habitat project to make a house into a home for a family. We are in need of construction volunteers and lunches for the crews.
