    Parish Office Hours during Christmas

The Parish Offices will reopen on Monday, January 4 after having been on Christmas break since December 24 at 12 noon . The Daily Mass schedule will continue through the Octave of Christmas.

  • Epiphanytide & the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity

In this sequence of Sundays following the Epiphany the Church celebrates the ongoing mani-festation of Christ to the world. After the end of Christmastide, we enter into that liturgical interlude called in Latin Tempus per annum, better known in the Roman Rite as “Ordinary Time,” the “green season” that stretches to Lent and then resumes after Pentecost. According to the Ordinariate Calendar, founded on medieval English usage, we count the Sundays after Epiphany, and depending on the date of Ash Wednesday there can be as few as two or as many as six such Sundays. The Sundays after Epiphany constitute a transitional period between the feasts of the Christmas cycle and the holy season of Lent. We may consider this time a kind of epilogue to Christmas, at least until Candlemas, on February 2, forty days after the Nativity. Then the joyful celebra-tion of Christ’s childhood gives way to sober preparation for Lent. The Gospels and Mass Propers appointed after Epiphany variously illustrate the reasons why the Word became flesh (cur Deus homo) and the means by which Christ manifests His glory, proclaiming the Kingdom of God and sowing the seeds of the Church as the sacrament of salvation. The week, in the period stretching from January 18th to the 25th, marks the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity which ought to have a special resonance for our cathedral parish. Established by Father Paul Wattson of Graymoor and the Anglican Friars of the Atonement in 1908 just before their corporate reconciliation with the Roman Catholic Church, this Week of Prayer for Unity was devised to link the feasts of the Chair of St. Peter (then celebrated on January 18) and the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25). The Octave has been endorsed by several Popes and testifies to the proven conviction that genuine ecumenism finds fulfillment in fidelity to the See of Peter. Even though the revised Roman calendar no longer observes the Chair of St. Peter on January 18th (the observance instead being kept on February 22nd as the Ordinariate’s Solemnity of Ti-tle), it is still fitting that we pray this week for the grace of conversion and that we intercede on behalf of our separated brethren. As the fruit of the Holy See’s generous reception of Anglican patrimony and as evidence of “realized ecumenism,” the Ordinariate owes its very existence to the prayers and example of Father Paul and the Atonement Friars, pioneering the way to re-stored ecclesial unity.

    V. I say unto thee, thou art Peter; R. And upon this rock I will build my Church.

St. John Paul II emphasized the graces that come when a Mass is offered. "The Church believes that she will be heard, for she prays in union with Christ her Head and Spouse, who takes up this plea of His Bride and joins it to His own redemptive sacrifice."
