Message from the Council

We learn like girls…try to keep up!

There are so many elements that make Our Lady of the Elms great:academic excellence, strong faculty and staff, dedicated alumnae, donors, and families, a beautiful campus, and of course, the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

What do we do that no one else in the Akron area does? We offer a single gender education. We offer an environment in which female students can excel. We offer an opportunity for young girls to find their voice. We challenge the girls to listen openly, evaluate wisely, speak bravely, lead justly, and minister compassionately. And we do it well.

In keeping with an 87 year tradition of academic excellence, Our Lady of the Elms is ranked 13th in the State, 1st in Summit County and 1st in the Cleveland Diocese*. Our Middle School girls advance to District and State Science Fair with excellent and superior results. Our Lady of the Elms Elementary ranks consistently in the 96th percentile and above for Language Arts and Reading on the IOWA Tests.

This issue of The Elms Magazine will not only showcase our students, alumnae and the Dominican Sisters of Peace. This issue will educate you - or reeducate you - on the benefits of single-gender education. Read on. Look at the hard numbers. Soak in the testimonials. See for yourself what makes Our Lady of the Elms, our students and alumnae great.

And tell a friend.

With grateful hearts,

4

* per the 2009 Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) results

“Our Lady of the Elms is blessed with strong leadership and an outstanding faculty that work with a supportive parental and alumnae community to develop outstanding young women. Our alumnae are widely recognized as some of the most outstanding women who lead our community. If you want a daughter who is well reasoned, can speak her mind eloquently, and who believes in social justice, send her to the Elms!”

Elms Performs The Wizard of Oz

Flag Day Celebration at Athletic ComplexOur Lady of the Elms and its Panther Pride Booster Club hosted a special event in honor of Flag Day to dedicate a new flag pole at the Elms Athletic Complex. The flag raising and dedication took place on Flag Day, Monday, June 14, at the Athletic Complex. The solemn ceremony and blessing included a Presentation of Colors, singing of the National Anthem, and the playing of Taps to honor those serving in the military and safety forces. Knights of Columbus from seven area councils were donors. The council at St. Hilary, along with the Fourth Degree assembly at St. Sebastian, played a major role. In particular, one St. Hilary gentleman was most generous in helping provide the pole itself, at no cost.

Special guests that assisted with the ceremony included:• Rev. Matthew Pfeiffer, Parochial Vicar at St. Sebastian Church in Akron and a Fourth Degree Knight, who offered a special blessing,• The Clear Choice Quartet, a barbershop vocal group sang the National Anthem.• Knights of Columbus, especially Council #14255 from St. Sebastian, who helped fund the new flag pole,• Representatives of the Panther Pride Booster Club and the Catholic Youth Organization.

On Friday, April 30, middle school students at Our Lady of the Elms School investigated the disappearance of the school dog “Gracie” as the culmination of a two-week Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) unit.

Science teacher Cristina Jones successfully applied for a GAR Educator Initiative Grant which funded this inter-disciplinary project between middle school science, math, language arts, and social studies teachers.

Middle School Director, Debbie Lorincz said, “This is a wonderful program for our girls. It fosters problem-solving and critical thinking skills.”

Principal Lisa Massello garnered the middle school students’ help on Friday with an emotional plea to help find her dog. Gracie’s empty leash was found approximately 20 minutes after she was tied to a tree outside the school. Students analyzed evidence left at the “crime scene” including lip prints on a coffee mug, footprints, hair samples, fingerprints, and ink on a note. The students questioned seven “persons of interests” under the supervision of Elms parent and practicing lawyer, Laura Kulwicki. Persons of interest included the principal’s administrative assistant, the Admissions Director, the school’s head cook, two teachers and the school librarian and the former convent prioress, both of whom routinely walk Gracie. After students gave their closing arguments to reveal who they had determined as the guilty party, Gracie leaped onto the stage to greet Massello and the relieved students.

Middle School CSI Unit: Where’s Gracie?

The Elms production of The Wizard of Oz was filled with dazzling performanc-es, breathtaking sets and costumes, spot-on direction and electrifying energy. Elaine Fippin, Chairperson of the Drama and English Departments, and Sheila Hutzler, Direc-

tor of Choirs (2008-2010), collaborated to produce the musical version of The Wizard of Oz. Last performed on the Elms stage in 1995, alumnae from that production returned to the Elms to celebrate. Two performances that were nearly standing room only delighted audiences.

Fippin excelled in casting, once again with Elizabeth Krochka ‘10 as the Lion, Marissa Esper ‘10, Angela DeSantis ‘10,

Noelle Colant ‘13, Meghan Caprez ‘11, Kathleen Cawley ‘10 Lena McCoy '11 Paul Connors markedd his 15th

anniversary as Ems set creator exraordinaire, by building a new Wizard set, complete with a rising

hot air balloon. Hutzler’s musical direction was invaluable and Rebecca Zarski ‘09 provided costume design support and overall assistance.

Eight National Merit Commended Students Representing 19% of Class of 2011Eight seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. The eight Commended Students, who represent 19% of the senior class are: Rachael Kosco, Katrina Muller, Sophia Paul, Victoria Sampsel, Carrie Slivka, Ellen Turk, Margaret Waickman and Rachael Whitehouse. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by Miss Massello to these scholastically talented seniors at a later date.

Elms Welcomes Teacher from ChinaOur Lady of the Elms High School welcomes a new world language, Mandarin Chinese, to its curriculum this year. Miss Wenjuan Fu teaches both Our Lady of the Elms and Archbishop Hoban students in an introductory class to her native language.

“Learning Chinese is necessary and helpful. There are many changes. I want more people to know Chinese,” Fu said.

Fu has been teaching for four years, but has only lived in America two months. She finds that the teaching styles between the two countries are different than she expected. In China, the teachers are the focal point of the classroom; there is no time for educational practices through games to help the student learn. Here, Fu says, she is allowed and encouraged to play educational games in her classroom. She finds that American students learn Mandarin much faster and easier through games.

Fu enjoys the camaraderie of Elms girls and has not seen students so close to each other in her entire career. “The girls are united. They help each other and are very active,” Fu said.

Mandarin will continue to contribute to the rich world language department of the Elms, alongside Spanish, French, Latin and German. Welcome, Miss Fu!

Pennies for Peace CorrectionIn the Elms Magazine Winter/Spring 2010 issue, it was mistakenly reported that the Elms Community raised $4063.90 when in fact the Elms Community raised $20,000!

“There is something very special and incredibly unique about an Elms education that I simply did not appreciate until after I graduated and entered college. The Elms offered challenging courses taught by amazing teachers, who truly loved what they were teaching. They not only knew how to effectively communicate the course material, but they also possessed this incredible ability to pass their passion for the subject on to their students.”

Phyllis Martter retires after 25 years of service “Good morning, girls and faculty. It’s Tuesday, June 8, the last day of school. Please report to the exam room.” Little did students and staff know that would be the last time they would hear the a.m. herald of Elms School Secretary Phyllis Martter. Mrs. Martter created a file and a transcript for every student who passed through Our Lady of the Elms High School for twenty-five years. On June 30, 2010, Mrs. Martter retired in good health to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

A School Secretary is part secretary, nurse, counselor, seamstress and mom. But actually Phyllis did much more than that. Phyllis was the behind the scenes orchestrator of our major celebrations - Ring Ceremony, Awards Night and Graduation. She made sure that every ‘t’ was crossed and ‘i’ was dotted so that each event would honor the students, parents and staff in true Elms style. In addition, she handled transportation arrangements for field trips, called substitute teachers, ensured that subs had the teacher’s lesson plans, kept track of keys,

assigned parking and lockers, updated lunch menus for posting on the Web, reminded students about detentions (much to students’ dismay), watered the huge plant fondly referred to as “Big Bertha” in the chapel, and dropped off mail daily on her way home. She valiantly navigated the red tape of the State of Ohio’s work permit electronic filing system. She personally delivered Akron Beacon Journal Star award nominations after toiling for hours to prepare the applications, often chasing down seniors to ensure that every honor had been included in their application. She worked with alumnae to ensure that transcripts were sent wherever and whenever requested.

In retirement, Phyllis returns to her family where she will always be the proud mother of an Elms graduate (Andrea ’88) and grandmother of an Elms PreK graduate. Thank you, Phyllis, for twenty-five years of dedication and caring!

A Night on Broadway!

February Fantasy 2010, A Night on Broadway was brought to life by the lavish decorations donated by Katherine’s Collections, which is owned by the family of Elms alumna and Board Member, Kate Kleski ‘93. Katherine’s Collections transformed our school into a wonderland of color, costumes, and creativity. Ralph Bernard, Sr. was honored posthumously and his family was there to receive our gratitude for his years of support to the Elms. Sounds from the Akron Big Band filled the room and set the Broadway mood as patrons danced on the dance floor. Parent Leadership Awards were given to Mary Zelch and Stephanie Whims for their outstanding service to the Elms as volunteers. All in all, it was a night on Broadway to remember!

Class of 2010

The class of 2010 will be remembered as individuals and as a class for their unique characteristics, including an impressive list of accomplishments. These 35 young women garnered more than $6.7 million in scholarships and were accepted to 173 different colleges and universities. College acceptances included Cornell, University of Chicago, Rutgers, The Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University. Graduation was a tremendous celebration. Valedictorian Kathleen Cawley and Salutatorian Chris Bellinger gave speeches that inspired their classmates and made them laugh. The Class of 2010 thoroughly enjoyed their commencement speaker – Rachel Whitehawk Day, Founder and Executive Director of Whitehawk Ranch – and found her three pieces of advice memorable, meaningful and practical. The class also honored Lexi Milan with the Service Award, Ellen Cinadr with the St. Catherine of Siena Award and Angela DeSantis with the Knights of Columbus Womanhood Award. Our newest alumnae made their class gift a sizable contribution to the endowed memorial scholarship in honor of Sr. Maura’s father Robert Bartel.

The Class of 2010 showed depth and breadth of talent in the fine and performing arts, athletics, leadership, service, and academics. Over their four years of high school, this class created unity in their diversity; they came to appreciate and celebrate each other’s gifts. They left us with wonderful memories – from Dorothy and the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz to a winning season in basketball. The quietest member of the class stole the talent show while the Spirit Club was asked to repeat their famous “If I were not an Elms girl” skit multiple times. This particular class was ready to embrace anything, because they wanted to make a difference. They chose to serve as positive role models for the underclasswomen. They demonstrated a commitment to Our Lady of the Elms High School by making it a better place for their having been here.

Beyond tangible accomplishments, we honor our most recent graduates for who they have become as young women. The class of 2010 exemplifies the Dominican commitment toward peace by promoting “unity through diversity.” We wish them the very best professionally and personally!

Spring Sports Wrap-upOn the Mound

The Panthers secured the ISL league championship, wrapping up league play with a final record of 8 – 2, and an overall record of 13 – 9. The Panthers challenged teams with a powerful offensive attack at the plate, and consistently brought tough defense to shake their opponents. Freshman Emily Scupholm led the Panthers on the mound with sophomore power hitter Kaitlin Morse behind the plate as catcher. Senior Captains Monica Slack and Dana Harshbarger provided leadership for the young squad, accompanied by senior Allison Benz. Juniors included Mayetta Christian, Ashley Harbaugh and Brittany Tyrpak; and rounding off the team of 12 were sophomores Lauren Schaeffer, Celeste Trammel; and freshmen Taylor Schmidt and Rachel Tustin. Head Coach Frank Voss was assisted by Kenn Parbel and Helen Bulford ’08.

The batting finesse of Kaitlin Morse placed her in the top of area softball stats, and certainly played an influential role in her being chosen as Player of the Week with SportsInk.com and the Akron Beacon Journal.

Our Lady of the Elms received 2nd seed honors, a first for the team in a number of years.

Around the Track

The team grew substantially from last season, securing a roster of 23 participants up from a roster of 10 athletes from the previous year. Sharing the captains’ role, were seniors Gabby Anderson and Liz Luckenbaugh. Juniors Rachael Whitehouse, Mollie McCarthy, Carly Pouttu and Marissa Ward, rounded off participants from the Elms upper-classes. The sophomores were represented by Claire Cawley, Daria Chalupa, Catherine Culp, Emmaline Fisher, Jessica Frew, Lauren Goetz, Morgan Lucas, Hannah Matasich, Amanda Merryweather and Margaret Roth; and freshmen included Abbey Eitman, Chloe Hillard, Alix King, Aubrey Kozer, Torie Luckenbaugh, Grace Myers and Andrea Semilia.

The Panthers enjoyed a wonderful post-season run with 13 girls qualifying for the District Semi-finals and from that grouping emerged sophomore Jessica Frew who qualified for the Regional Semi-finals in the 200 meter dash.

AssemblyThe Dominican Sisters of Peace held their Assembly in Columbus,

Ohio, on July 22-25, 2010. This gathering offered a time of prayer and dialogue with the Sisters and Associates to update and exchange reflective thinking on the vision and future of the Dominican Sisters of Peace and Associates.

During this time discussion centered on action steps to be taken individually and collectively in response to the four Chapter commitments of April 20, 2009:

• Study, contemplate, and preach God’s revelation discovered in the unfolding mystery of creation and

in Sacred Scripture.

• Create environments of peace by promoting non-violence, unity in diversity, and reconciliation among ourselves, the Church and others.

• Promote justice through solidarity with those who are marginalized, especially women and children, and work with others to identify and transform oppressive systems.

• Create welcoming communities, inviting others to join us as vowed members, associates, volunteers, and partners in our mission to be the Holy Preaching.

There was also a special time for celebrating Silver and Gold Jubilees.
