Several from this community attended the funeral of Mr. Mose Bryant of Arlington at Fall Creek Monday afternoon. Mr. Clyde Phillips, a student at Wake Forest, left Sunday to resume his studies after spending a few days here with his mother, Mrs. J. P. Phillips. Mr. Wade Choate and Charles Tomlinson of Sparta were guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Burcham Sunday afternoon. Miss Agnes Pardue is spending this week with her sister, Mrs. Arthur Darnell of North Elkin. Beta Club Members are Entertained Misses Ruth Brown, Edwinia Hemric and Opal Ingool were joint hostesses at a Beta Club entertainment Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wal- ter Burgess. A color scheme of blue and gold was carried out. Chinese check- ers and various other games were played during the evening. Those winning prizes were Jean Vestal, Vermeil Macemore, Jerry Burgess and J. H. Swaringer. COOL SPRINGS Our Sunday school dropped back a bit last Sunday, owing to the earlier hour, and the short session; but we hope it won't be permanent. Our choir and several others from here attended the singing at Pleasant Home Sunday. There were eight groups participating, Pleasant Home, Little Elkin, Maple Springs, Cool Springs, Pleasant Hill, Yadkin 4, Cocker- ham Trio, Bradley Duet. Owing to the prevalence of flu so late here we with others failed to do much rehearsal, but the old songs were not so bad heard again and there was a goodly number of new ones. The next convention will be held at the Old Home church. Cool Springs, and we want all the family, with all the grandchil- dren and neighbors to join with us in a real old fashioned sing- ing convention. There is no question of your welcome here, and we say, "Thanks to the choir directors that so favored us." Rev. Clete Simmons filled his appointment here Sunday even- ing and Rev. I. W. Vestal, our pastor, was a visitor with him. Cool Springs folks are going to Prospect church near Smithtown Saturday evening, and join the group from Winston-Salem in the service there. They will hold a cottage prayer service with Aunt Lodeem Harpe Wednesday evening, and will go to the home of K. M. Carter Saturday night week. The young folks' meeting will be as usual Sunday evening, and we hope to have both group lead- ers, Mrs. Lucy Newman Holbrook and Mr. Carmel Tucker, present. The boys' books have arrived and many have been distributed. We're hoping that they will use them, too. Also it is understood that the boys will soon have a new pianist, thus making them even with the girls. A Mother's Day program will feature the evening service for Mother's Day, as owing to our communion service we haven't time for that in the morning ser- vice, and Little Elkin is expected to join us then. PLEASANT HILL 3T e Sunshine quartet sang at Stacy Baptist church in Reids- ville Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Simmons had as their week-end guests Mr. Simmons parents, of Thurmond. The children's choir was taken on a fishing trip and weiner roast Thursday evening in the New Hope community by Rev. D. W. Day. This was promised the children when they did such an excellent job in raising money for our new church building. The "Red" side of the building fund contest won in the finals, but enough money was given to make both the Red and Blue sides tie. Mr. Qwyn Baugess preached at Pleasant Hill Sunday night, using as his subject, "The Two .Ways." The ladies' chorus attended the fifth Sunday singing convention Sunday afternoon at Pleasant Home. Mr. and Mrs. odell Couch had as their guests Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Luther Byrd and son, Avery, ? of the Macedonia community. i Miss Mozelle Darnell was the Sunday guest of Mr. and Mrs. David Darnell. Everyone is cordially in- vited to attend. Mr. and Mre. R. H. Laster vis- ited in Mocksville during the week-end. BOONVTLLE Rev. Howard J. Ford, pastor of Sparta Baptist church, delivered the baccalaureate sermon here Sunday night, April 30. The program opened with the song, "Holy, Holy, Holy" by the audi- ence. Rev. J. P. Davis offered prayer. The girls' chorus of the school rendered the song "Largo" after which Mr. Howard brought his message. The commencement program of the school will come to a close May 5 and 6, at which time the high school will grad- uate 19 seniors. Misses Sadie Fleming and Ruby Hinshaw made a trip to Winston- Salem Tuesday. The Boonville Beta Club held its last meeting of the current school term last Friday night at the home of Mrs. Gennie Lind Brown who acted as hostess to the group. A short business session was held just after the group as- sembled. At this session officers for the term of 1939-40 were elected. Curtis Hobson was elect- ed president: Harold Stinson, vice-president, and Miss Cam Shore, secretary. Misses Irene Coram and Fran- ces Coram, and Messrs. Frank Jones and Ernest Collins, all of Mt. Airy, were visitors in the home of the Misses Coram's par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Coram, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dan C. Hem- mings, of Dobson, were visitors in Boonville Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Brooks en- tertained a number of the Boon- ville faculty members at their home Tuesday night of this week at a dinner party. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Watt Deal, and Mrs. Allan Jessup. ROCKFORD The commencement exercises of the Rockford school will begin Thursday night May 4, with an operetta given by the first five grades entitled "Pandara." Fri- day night a play will be presented by the six and seventh grades en- titled, "For the Love of Mike."
