THE EDITOR.1.2.ll1.

So, we mede it! Irish Orienteering has aurllived yet another yeer, despiterecessians snd depreSsions. The O-year waS really rather successful in a funny sartof way. Quite a number of interesting things hapPllned here - wa hllid two internation-al two-day evarrts , demonatrating the vari ..ty af ty,pas of Irish Or-ienoteering (in moreways than one). we had a Cospeir Natianal O"Day which was coneiqered a success byalmost all ,and the Cennaught (ar Cennecht) Regian came of age. 'iThe Irish Orienteer"materialised fram th .. aehes of the "LOC Newsletter" (with no help from John Mulcahy).and Irish Teams took part in the Continental Cup in Scotland, and in two Juniar HameInternatianals._ It appeers that at long'la'at the mapping doldrums have been leftbehind - quite a numbllr of osw maps, many af them lacal parks ar smell woads, haveappeered, and th .. cancept of the Calaur event is being mare widely accapted. God be wi th the days "hen traoks were made of grass or,worse, oinders, when ooaohes roa~d ~~ke lions and most ofus suspeoted that fartlek oame from beans. Around wepounded blowing out our oheeks lUte Gordon Pirie andspiking ourselves and others with real spikes that drewblood.

It's allover now, "no sweat" they say, - al)d twinkle-toes OCleirigh skims across the line, Justin May oarveshis musoles down to a oonvenient size before events andWally and Pat return from the Lebanon because it is tooSJM,ll to,train in. Lesser mortals wring out their s'leat-bands at the last oontrol in feeble imitation. ",You,don'tneed to be fast," they say - as they float over the brashings."Regularity, not speed," they shout baok - as they push thehills down under their feet. - It's like an All-Branad:vertiaement.

But stop a Dloment, look who'sdalking. These are Nationaland International standard athlete~' aided and abetted byMarathon runnerll who train that way an:yway. These peoplewill automatioally paoe themselves at a ulleful level during,t'raining forgett, ing that, 1)y teQ.:ralt8fttor experienoe, theyare able to aooept a whole range of physical and mentalcUsco.mforte whioh present real barriers to the aspiringathlete. Also, tbey have time on their side, or are preparedto make saori, fioes, whioh others are not, for the sake oftraining.

Let us look at our aspiring athlete, he is young (17 - 35)medioally fit, and able to run the full lsngth of hie oourseat a modellt paoe. He gets his orienteering run eyery twoweeks, but gete lost if he pushes too bard as he is not fiteDough to oonoentrate when tired. We leave him to eink intothe brashings. He oan get a good run on alternate week-endsand perhaps a half-hour or two dUring the week. He's notgoing to improve muoh by jogging. "Db no," they ory, j'wenever meant jogging." The plot thiokensl "we mean runningbut not fallt." Ever tried to keep up with Carey May whenshe'll not going fast?

So, to basios, what are you training for? You are trainingto be able to run on your own tbrough the forest at the upperedge of your fitness band. 'l'bat'sit! lot total exhaustion,or you won't be able to think. Beoause you will be on yourown you must teaoh yourself to mOve up and down through yourfitness band, and this is something that plodding will nev, erteaoh yoU. Warm up slowly, five minutes at the least, at theend of whioh you should be just.rabout ready to sweat. Youare now ready to follow what ,ever sOhedule you have mappedout for yourself but, to that sohedule, add' ju~t,one smallingredient - TRY A LITTLE HARDER -. This ingredient ie theone our athletes forget, to 'tell us abou,t beeause 1t hasbeoome automatio to thell. 'From tille to time, as it ocoursto ,you On a run, ask yourself 'oan I 'gb just a little faster?'Then inoreass your paoe jU,stenough to'notioe '1t, no more, and carry ~n until you ~irik of it again. In this way yourepeatedly cross tire,\.eritalba:~iEi·rwhioh we all have togreater effort, and ask just that little bit .ore of ourphysical performance as well. As someon8"s ooaoh saidsometime 'GET OUT THERE ABD GET 'l'OREIll'.

URAWING AN ORIENTEERING MAP - Eoin Rothery (AJAX)

~J. REGISTER

And now we come to the most important aspect of your map. If you get this one wrongand ell the others right, your map will still be a shambles. You cannot 'get awaywith' a substandard register. It is not good enough to slap any old cross downanywhere and hope that it turns out all right. That fancy colour quadrant is nicebut it is not a good register tool. It should be used only ee a reminder, and asas indication to the compotitor.

If your register is bad the map becomes almost impossible to drew. If you do manageto drew the map and the printer manages to register the register msrks then all yourcolours will be off. If he tries to register the map - by the way, he is most unlikelyto do this, but it is something the photographer might try - then the register markwill look as if it is off. If there are other maps on the seme plete, and the printerregisters your faulty register than all the other maps will be sffectsd., i.e. theywill be wrecked.

The first thing to do is to decide where the frame is going. Thon at each corner,on tho compilation map, 1 cm outside the frame, put 4 rogister crossas. For thisit would be usoful to have a 0.1 mm pen and 8 light table, but use the finest penyou have and be careful. Thon put the 'Bl\,ck' shoot on top of this en,d trace thecrosses carefully. Now do the 8sme for the other 4 shests - rsgister eech ons indiv-idually to the compilation mop.

Before drawing any pert of the map, make sure you hove lined up the crosses correctly. At intervalS check, it might have slipped. After you have finished it may be necess-ary to thicken up the crosses to 0.2 or 0.25, if you are going to reduce. If youore putting a colour quadrant in, meke doubly aure that it is right, and make Burethat the photographer and printsr know to ignore this, and use the ones outside theframe. Printers like to remova register marks, but you must insist that he does not. When the map haa been printed the marke mey be trimmed off, eince you have wisely putthem outside the frsme. This means you can check the register after printing.

4. URAWING THE MAP

The easiest order to do the colours in is os follows:- Blsck, Brown, Blue, Green,Yellow. You trace all of these off the compilation mep, but in doing some of thelater ones you may have to put the Black (usually) below the compilation map to checkthat what you have registers.

If you are right-handed you work from the top left hand corner to the bottom right, vice verSa for left handed 1 prasume. If you have not taped the map to the drawingsurface then you can rotete it around while drawing. Thia is so you can avoid leaningyour hand on linas you have just drewn.

It will be necessary to put a piece of soft tissue under your hand. This reducesthe grease pr.ob Lem , Even with your nice clean hands thet you wDsh each time beforeyou start you will find that they will grease the film making it much more diffic~ltto drew on.

IThe pen should be held at a high angle to the drawing surfece, notical, unless you can do it comfortably. Ths ink should be allowednib to the surface, without the nib actually touching as you draw.damage both the film and the pen.

essentially vsrt-to flow from theIf it does it msy

Get the thicker lines out of the way first, as smaller lines may heve to be displacedto accommodate roads and suchlike. They are also more liable to smudge. for dashed

8

lines a double stroke of the pen makes for a better appearance. After ell theline features you do the dotted lines and point features. Dots are the drawer'scurse 8S they smudge if you breathe on them. The Orienteering Map Symbol Letrasctsheet is very useful for point features and is available from Hervey Map Services.

There are two methods of putting the sCreens for colour areas on the map. Letrstoneis a brand neme for sheets of dots and lines. Matt colours (fest open, fight) aredone by putting aroas of solid black on your Grscn end Yellow sheets. Altsrnatively, you may use Letrafilm 151M which is an opaque film, red in colour. You cSn e190 geta red, photogrsphically opaque t,ape, but this tends to shrink. for the dot screensyou must remember that if you use too fine a screen then the dots will merge end youwill be left with a blotchy patch. Lorge dots look cumbersome but this is the priceyou have to pay.

The other method you cen use is one of prepsring a seperate drawing for each screen- Walk, Slow Run, Rough Open. On each drewing all the patches are opaque or blackand an instruction is written on each to the photographer - 50~ Green etc. The photo-grapher has these screens, with quite fine dots, end es he makes the negative he willexpose these 8S appropriate. Curracloe, the Park maps and ~arvey maPS use thismethod, while most Irish maps use the Letratone (Camolin, Phoenix Park, Kylebreck,etc.). The second method mey also be used to remove the yellow from under all theBlue sheet. All Letretone must be well burnished down or bubbles will ¥how up, Orths whole piece may come off.

5. SURROUNIlS

The freme should be a thick uniform line. The title can be a thick pen or you mayuse fancy Letreeet, or other stick-on letters. At all costs try and avoid the'Starposts' (JK'B2) sort of title, which competitora mey try and nevigate through.

North should be instantly identifiable and arrows should go on the magnetic northlines. A scale ber is difficult to drew well, but may be essential for simple meps. You should also state the scale a9 a ratio.

'rhe legend should be logical. Put all ths screens together, B.ll the lines together, and tha same for points. Div,ide the 3 sectione by colour.

Credit m~st bs given where it is due. 1 don't think that a set of initiels f~llyrewards a peraon for hie effort and co-operation, no matter how small the input intothe survey may have been. It is standard practice in moat publications to list theauthors in order of tha importance of their contributions.Lettering msy be typed onto a piece of pepar, cut out end stuck to tha map. Stencil-ling with the conventional stencils is difficult to do well. A Leroy syatem stencilis eesier and produces good reeults, but ie feirly expensive. Letraaet is difficultto get straight. for the last 3 it is assential to USB a aheet of graph pepar underyour sheet.

THE MAPPING OF CRONYBYRNE

A last minute rush for a printers deadline lead to severalomissions from the map of Cronybyrne. Most were minor and threeappeared as map corrections. The major omission, however was thatof the history of the map. I have criticised the practice ofleaving this off previous maps so I hope this article might go someway to righting this wrong. The first event in Cronybyrne -Ballinastraw WaS held on 22/3/70. The map was the 0.5. six inchwith forest roads marked on by Paddy McCann. The M21A coursecontained t.h.eclassic control " The Tree Stump" which was locatedon the summit of the high rocky knoll in Ballinastraw (East of themain road). The knoll was not obvious on the map, marked only bya lin~ of dots(lOO' contour} among the tree symbols. Nigel Barkovercame this difficulty to win the l2.9km course in 182 minutes.Niall Rice was 2nd (200), Paddy O'Leary 3rd (2l0). 16 people ran theA and among the notables to finish down the field were 7th Joe Bent(263), 9th Sean Rothery (280) and lOth Colin Dunlop (309).

In December 1970, just over 1 year after the first eventin Leinster an event waS held on Ballinastraw. Mapping Standardsb..adaccelerated dramatically and this map, drawn by Sean Rothery,Was the fourth 2 colour map to appear. Nigel Bark continued hisunbeaten run to win in 106 mins. from Michael Lunt and Joss Lynam. Then in March 1971 Nigel Bark was beaten for the first time in Ityears by Michael Lunt at a score event in Ballinastraw, againorganised by Sean Rothery, by the smallest margin - 425 to 420.

Another Score event was organised in October 1971 by Paddy McCannand this time the order was 1 S Rothery 2 P McCormack 3 N Rice.Maura Byrne (Thornhill) won the 'Nomens. In December 1971 NiallRi~e organised an event on his new map of Cronybyrne (West of theroad) and this saw one of the closest finishes yet, wita Paddy O'Learywinning in 113 mins. from N Bark 114 M Lunt 115 S Rotnery 122 ER 124and Colin Dunlop 130. In October 1972 timing had gone to seconds andNiall Rices second event saw Nigel Bark winning by 45 seconds fro.Colin Dunlop with 137.05. Next were Sean Rothery 144.55, Tom McCormackl55.0~and Ted McGrath 156.30. Niall organised his third event inSeptember 1973. This was won by Jim Butler with 88 minutes for 8.5km.Maire Cregan (Walsh) won the womens.

12 .

1974 saw the whole '<1.rCaas one map again. Colin Dunlop andAlan Wo1.fe combined to draw a black and wlm1.temap. They organised ane~ent in November and the winners were Michael Lunt and MonicaTurley, The next event was in June 1975 organised by the Newrnans andDiana Large on a map redrawn by Diana Large. Somebody won with NiallRice second and Sean Rothery third. Eileen Loughman won the womens. It was a bot day and the eVElntwaS poorly attended, so anotherwas organised by Niall Rice in September. Somebody won, beating 'NallyYoung by 10 seconds with 89.20 and a Swiss Marcus Grubr third (93).Maire Walsh was the best lady.

It was around this time that we learned that the Forestry wererunning a woodcock count survey in the wood. Nets were being used andorienteering was frowned on. Setanta took control of the area whenIrish Orienteers was disbanded. When AjlaxWaS formed in 1979 weapplied for the area and were given it. We started the survey but withthe woodcock count still going on and a new area in Curracloe weshelved it. The club started mappin~ the.area ~n force again in late1981. A map of Championship quality on Championship grade terrain isa huge task to.be compLeted in a 10 month period and it Jwas only becausewe had a team of six experienced surveyors (Niall, Paddy. Philip, EddieGreg and myself) that we were able to complete it.

MUNSTER O. ASSCN. A.G.M.

~~§,!,~~--~Q,!,~§

The A.G.M. of the M.O.A. will be held at The Glen Hotel in the Glenof Aherlow on sunday Jan. 23rd 1983. The meeting will follow theMunster League event at Aherlow Wood. Members of all Munster o. Clubs, intending members and everybody interested in the sport of Orienteeringin Munster are urged to attend.

The 1982 Munster League awards will be presented at the Glen Hotelimmediately before the A.G.M.

The final event of the 1982 Munster League took place at Rostellanwood recently. Eight fixtures were designated as League Events. Theywere Kilworth (Jan. 16), Cratloe (Feb 14), Seefin (Mar. 21), Drumleagh(May 2), Castlefreke (Sept 26), Seefin (Oct. 31), Glenbower (NOV. 21)and Rostellan (Dec 5). The different age-classes compete in Leagueevents as follows. A Course M19, 21A and 35: B Course M17 and 43, W19:C Course MIS and 50, W15, 17 and 35; D Course M13, W13 and 43. Acompetitor's points in a League event are calculated by expressing hisor her time as a percentage of 'the average of the three fastest timesrecorded on the particular course on which he or she was running. ThisallOW'S all competitors on each course to compare performances directly,e.g. a W19 performance can be compared directly with an M43 as bothcompete on Course B. Eaoh oompetitor must complete a minimum of 5 outof the 8 designated events. Those completing more than the minimum canshed their less good scores and remain assessed on the total points oftheir 5 best performances. Due to an organisational error at Kilworththe A Course results were declared void for this event, and the 5 bestperformances from the remaining seven events were used. In the resultsbelow many well-known Munster names do not appear. In some cases thisarises from a failure to complete the required minimum. Several juniorssacrificed their League chances by moving up a course in mid-stream inpreparation for international competitions.
