  • The 2019 Festival

    WELCOME

    Welcome to the Syllabus for the Association’s 99th Festival. Our annual Festival provides an opportunity for amateur musicians to perform in a friendly environment and get constructive feedback from expert specialist adjudicators. Our aim is for participants to find it a stimulating and valuable experience. We have events for all ages in a wide range of instruments as well as in singing. There are competitive and non-competitive classes. Most classes group performers by the level of their playing rather than by age. This year we are offering classes in accordion playing. We are also expanding the choice of choir classes and introducing a Primary Music Making class to encourage more participation by primary schools. Members of the public are welcome to attend any classes as audience, and admission (except for the closing concert) is free. You will hear some splendid performances, and fascinating and illuminating adjudications. The easiest way to enter is online. Go to our website www.ecfest.org.uk, click “Syllabus” and select RunMyFestival Online Entry System. I should like to take this opportunity to thank our generous sponsors and the large band of volunteers without whom we could not run the Festival. We are extremely grateful for all that they do. The Festival will be launched with the first round of the Concerto Competition on Friday and Saturday 1st and 2nd February 2019 in Stockbridge Parish Church. The closing concert at The Queen’s Hall on Sunday 17th March will feature highlights of the Festival and the final of the Concerto Competition. The Festival has taken place every year with one exception since 1920, so we look forward to our centenary in 2020. We are always looking for volunteers to help run it, both as stewards during the Festival itself, and as organisers and planners throughout the year.     Final Concert

    The Final Concert of Highlights of the 2019 Festival, followed by the Final of the Concerto Class, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Friends of the Festival conducted by Gordon Bragg, will be held on Sunday 17 March at The Queen’s Hall.

    Regulations2019

    PLEASEREADALLFESTIVALREGULATIONSCAREFULLY. 1 ELIGIBILITY This is an amateur Festival. Those musicians who receive, or have received, fees for their performances (i.e. more than out of pocket expenses), are barred from entering. Exceptions in 2019 are Classes 53, teacher and pupil duets (232, 258, 283 and 323), teacher led Creative Performance and Traditional Music (Classes 3 and 4) and Primary Music Making (Class 6). For classes with age limits the qualifying date is 1 April 2019. All ages may take part in Open Classes including music students in further education. Music students may not enter classes 221, 255 or 331. 2 ENTRIES All entries must be submitted by an adult (i.e. someone over 18) or teacher, parent or guardian on behalf of a performer. Non-competitive classes are indicated as such; all other classes are competitive. Entrants may appear once only in any solo class unless on different instruments. Otherwise they may appear only once in a class unless with different partners. In orchestras and choirs all performers must be bona fide members of the named group. Please also note that participants may not perform the same work in more than one class. In case of doubt please enquire (see page 4 of the Syllabus). Entries may be made online by following the link on www.ecfest.org.uk or by using the paper forms in the Syllabus centre-fold. Entry fees are not refundable. Late entries will not normally be accepted. 3 CLASS LEVELS Entrants should be entered at their current level of study as defined below, in both competitive and non-competitive classes. Own choice of piece(s) need not be selected from a published exam list or graded anthology, but should be at the specified Level. Where, in the opinion of the adjudicator, an Entrant is playing a piece outside the appropriate Level, they will not be eligible to win an award.

    Level 1 is for musicians playing at Grades 1-2 standard. Level 2 is for musicians playing at Grades 3-4 standard. Level 3 is for musicians playing at Grades 5-6 standard. Level 4 is for musicians playing at Grades 7-8 standard.

    Musicians performing at a standard beyond Grade 8 should enter Open classes. 4 TIME LIMITS Entrants should observe set time limits. If they overrun they may be stopped and will not be eligible to win an award. Recitals, including spoken introductions, should fill but not exceed the allotted time. In 2019 these are Classes 101 and 102; 201, 202 and 204; 271; 301, 302 and 304; 411 and 421. 5 OFFICIAL ACCOMPANISTS In 2019 the services of a Festival Accompanist will be available for Instrumental Classes up to Level 3. Performers should send copies of the music chosen with the correct postage, and no later than 31 January, to Dr Philip Coad, 210 Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh EH4 7BA, clearly marked with Entrant’s name, class number and the piece to be performed. He will refuse music which is late, illegible or in poor condition. In 2019 there will be no Official Accompanists for Choirs, for any 15 minute Recital or for the following Instrumental Classes: Open, 10 minute Recital, Junior Challenge and Level 4. There will be no Official Accompanists for Open Solo Vocal Classes (Classes 411 to 417) but entrants

    may contact Philip Coad ([email protected] or 0131 336 4155) who can give advice, but engaging an accompanist is the entrant’s responsibility. 6 MUSIC FOR PERFORMERS, ACCOMPANISTS AND ADJUDICATORS For works which are in copyright performers and their accompanists must ensure that even when playing or singing from memory they bring published copies of works to their performance. Copies must be supplied for the Adjudicator at all classes COPYRIGHT: For works still in copyright, all participants are responsible for ensuring that neither they nor their pupils or children infringe the laws of copyright. This affects works by a living composer or one who has died within the last 70 years, or works from an edition published in the last 25 years. Additional copies for the Adjudicator should be as published except where the copyright holder is a member of the Music Publishers’ Association. In such cases a photocopy may be provided. This will be destroyed by the Festival Steward at the end of the class. In the case of music in the public domain, as for instance traditional tunes, musicians should check the copyright status of the arrangement. In the case of music legally downloaded from the Internet, scores must be clearly marked with the name of the site from which they have been obtained. All copies should be clearly marked with the Entrant’s name. 7 ADJUDICATION All performers will receive a written adjudication as soon as is practicable after the end of their classes, those for competitions noting Category/ies achieved. Performance in competitive classes will be graded by the following categories: O (Outstanding); E (Excellent); G (Good); S (Sound); M (More security needed) In all cases the Adjudicator’s decision is final. 8 AWARDS Awards will only be made where the winner has achieved Category O or Category E. Medals and trophies will normally be presented after competitions. Winners of trophies will be required to sign receipts for them. 9 PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECORDING Photography, sound recording and video recording are prohibited during Festival performances and adjudications. Festival staff will be at liberty to ask any person not complying to leave the venue. Following performances, however, there may be an opportunity for private photographs to be taken. Those present should follow the instructions of the Festival stewards. 10 CHILD AND VULNERABLE ADULT PROTECTION It is important that teachers and parents entering children in the Festival understand that Festival staff are charged with the smooth running of events and will not act in loco parentis. Responsibility for the care and supervision of children – defined for this purpose as persons under 18 years of age – lies with their parents or with other adults to whom their parents have entrusted them, both while they are performing and at all other times during the Festival. Similarly, Festival staff will not take responsibility for the care and supervision of vulnerable adults who, if appropriate, should be accompanied to, and during, the Festival. Teachers have a particular responsibility to ensure that the parents of children they are entering for the Festival are aware of this policy.

The choice of Concerto is subject to approval. Unsuitable works, e.g. requiring too large or complex an orchestration, will be refused. Entrants are therefore advised to seek approval well in advance of the Final Entry Date, and full details of the orchestration should be established before doing so.     At the First Round (1-2 February 2019) four competitors will be selected to perform the same movement(s) presented for the First Round in the Final on Sunday 17 March 2019, accompanied by the Friends of the Festival Orchestra. Finalists will be responsible for hiring the orchestral parts. The source and cost of these parts should therefore also be established before entering the competition.

    Official accompanists will not be provided for this class. Previous winners of the class may not compete in it again.

    Adjudicators 2019

    KAREN ANDERSON (Winds) studied clarinet with Lewis Morrison and John Cushing at the RSAMD, winning the Glasgow Society of Musicians Prize for Woodwind in 1990. She went on to freelance extensively in Scotland and the North of England, including work with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Orchestra. Karen is currently Senior Music Instructor for the North Highlands and clarinet tutor for the Highland Regional Orchestra. She also conducts Caithness Schools Wind Band and is an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals RICHARD BENJAFIELD (Percussion) studied at the RNCM, University of Ghana and Tanglewood Music Centre. For ten years Richard led Ensemble Bash, the first established percussion quartet in the UK. As well as commissioning and performing over forty new works, many now established as standard repertoire, the quartet toured worldwide, performed at the BBC Proms, recorded for Sony Classical and established an influential programme of outreach work for schools. Richard has performed extensively with London Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Nash Ensemble, and Glyndebourne Touring Opera. Richard has also recorded widely for BBC Radio and TV, and collaborated with musicians such as Steve Reich, Joanna MacGregor, and Colin Currie. As a conductor he has directed performances including BBC Total Immersion concerts of the music of Cage, Xenakis, and Philip Glass, and recently Stravinsky's Octet in the Barbican's pre-LSO chamber series. A professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama since 1995, Richard took up the position of Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion in 2009, and in 2013 he was honoured to be made a Fellow of the Guildhall School. He will be making a welcome third visit to adjudicate here.

    JEFFREY WYNN DAVIES (Choirs, Junior Vocal) Having initially trained as a singer with Lyndon Vanderpump in Cambridge, and Ellis Keeler at the Royal Northern College of Music, Jeffrey Wynn Davies taught music in high schools in Cardiff and Shropshire before becoming local education authority music adviser in Greater Manchester. Here he was responsible for founding and developing Bury’s extensive Music Service, which included Bury Youth Orchestra, concert and brass bands, string orchestras, youth choir and an award winning Big Band. His national reputation as a choral conductor includes the winning of the BBC Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year title with his chamber choir Canzonetta. He founded the Manchester Chorale for BBC Radio Manchester, and, between 2001 and 2007, directed the internationally renowned Manchester Boys Choir. He also conducted Harrogate Choral Society between 1991 and 2005. He is Artistic Director of the Cranleigh Choral Week, where his 250 strong South of England Festival Chorus meets annually to perform major works in southern cathedral venues. He has given workshops for all the major British choral organizations, and has directed choral festivals for the BBC. He has not only participated in over 100 separate festivals in his 23 year Federation career, but has sat on the judging panel at international choral competitions, including Prague, Verona, Malta, and, last summer. Barcelona.

    AUDREY DOUGLAS (Harps) grew up in West Sussex, had piano lessons from a young age and subsequently began playing the harp aged 12 years. This soon became her main instrument studying as a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music and then full time. On qualifying Audrey was appointed harpist with the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra and Ulster Orchestras. Six years later Audrey moved to the Midlands where she raised a family of three daughters. She freelanced with

    many of the major symphony orchestras and was also the first call harpist for numerous productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. For several years she toured with Birmingham Opera Company and performed with Longborough Opera. Returning regularly to Northern Ireland, she toured the country with Phoenix Flute and Harp Duo. The Duo specialised in concerts in schools throughout the U.K. and were pioneers of performances for children in Art Galleries, Museums and, more unusually, Historic Ships and Aquariums. In recent years Audrey has focused on solo playing. She has a busy private teaching practice and many of her pupils have gone on to become professional harpists. Audrey is the Secretary for a very similar festival in Leamington Spa which has become one of the biggest competitive harp festivals for young harpists. SIMON FRITH (Concerto Final) is Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh, where he held the Tovey Chair from 2005-2017. A collection of his essays, Taking Popular Music Seriously, was published in the Ashgate series, Contemporary Thinkers on Critical Musicology, and he is currently writing a history of live music in Britain since 1950, the first volume of which, covering 1950-1967, was published by Ashgate in 2013. He chaired the judges of the Mercury Music Prize from 1993-2017, and joined the board of directors of St Mary’s Music School in 2008, acting as chair from 2013-2015. He was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 2011 and appointed to an OBE in 2017. PAUL HARRIS (Concerto First Round) Paul Harris is one of the UK’s most influential music educationalists. He studied the clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won the August Manns Prize for outstanding performance in clarinet playing, and where he now teaches. He is in great demand as a teacher, composer and writer, having published over 600 books. His inspirational master classes and workshops continue to influence thousands of young musicians and teachers all over the world in both the principles and practice of musical performance and education. By now Paul is an old friend of the Edinburgh Competition Festival and we look forward to his visit for the Concerto First Round. MARIA JAGUSZ (Singing) First training as a dancer, Maria Jagusz studied at the Royal Northern College of Music where she was awarded the Ricordi Prize for Opera. After further study at the National Opera Studio she worked with numerous opera companies in the UK and Europe, her roles including Carmen, Cherubino, Orlofsky, Hansel, Dorabella and Rosina. A keen recitalist, she is also a regular soloist with British choral societies. As a teacher Maria specialises in preparing students for opera and musical theatre and works to showcase young talent in both operas and musicals. She is advisor for Longborough Festival Opera’s Young Artist Programme and travels all over the country leading workshops and master classes. She has been awarded Honorary Chairmanship of the Silurian Consort in recognition of her contribution to music in the Cotswolds. Having been thwarted by the snow in 2018 we are delighted she can come to Edinburgh for the 2019 Competition Festival. FIONA McLEAN-BEUCHEL (Concerto First Round) received her professional training at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Academy in London. She combines a busy performing career with writing collaborative national and international performance projects. She was a professor of violin at the Junior Guildhall School and has lectured at Goldsmith’s College and Colchester Institute. She is visiting tutor for the National Children’s Orchestra and Head of Strings for the London Borough of Bexley, having co-founded the Dartington Plus Summer Youth Strings Programme in 2005. More recently she founded South West Camerata and the charity JUTP MUSIC. She has lectured at Dartington College, at Cardiff University and for the European String Teachers Association on “Mindfulness”

    among other topics. Her quartet features regularly in shows for BBC TV. Fiona was recently appointed Lead Tutor for Strings at Trinity Laban Junior Conservatoire. We are pleased to welcome her to the Competition Festival for a third time. ALAN MacLEAN (Piano) After graduating with distinction from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Alan MacLean continued his studies with internationally renowned pianists, including Karl Schnabel. Principally a pianist, Alan also studied violoncello and singing, and trained as a conductor. Alan is much in demand as a chamber musician, having played with many of the UK's leading instrumentalists. In 2010 he and the violist Carol Hubel-Allen formed the Duo Karadys, the pair enjoying a busy concert schedule that included the world premiere of David Earl's Sonata for Viola and Piano at the Cheltenham International Music Festival, followed by a recording of the Earl and Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata. After twenty years as Head of Keyboard Studies at The Cheltenham Ladies’ College Alan left to explore a number of musical projects. He gives master classes for young pianists and chamber music players, and his students have won many awards. Alan travels extensively, speaking and adjudicating at a wide range of music events. He has a close relationship with the Sri Lanka Festival of Performing Arts. With the generous support of Cheltenham College, Alan has set up a scholarship to be awarded annually to the most promising musician from that event to visit the UK for a period of study and cultural experience. Alan is now based in the west of Scotland and we are delighted to welcome him back to the Festival HELEN SANDERSON (Guitars, Concerto Final) studied at the Royal College of Music, London with Charles Ramirez, graduating with the Madeline Walton Guitar Prize and Anthony Saltmarsh Bursary. She has performed at venues including the Purcell Room, the Academy of Arts (Berlin) and the Barbican Centre and is in regular demand as an adjudicator. In addition to a teaching post at Downe House, Newbury, and her private teaching practice, she is the director of the World Youth Guitar Festival and the Winchester Guitar Festival. She enjoys teaching all levels from beginners to post-diploma. This is a welcome return to the Competition Festival. ANDREW SHERWOOD (Strings) Born and educated in Africa, Andrew studied violin and composition at the RCM. He has performed across the world as conductor and violinist and composers have written for him. He has led the Mercury Ensemble for Ballet Rambert and freelanced in many British orchestras. He is Professor of Violin at Trinity College of Music and, as a conductor, has worked with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and is Director of Music for the Brighton Youth Orchestras, Musical Director of the Musicians of All Saints, Director of Choirs for the University of Brighton and Conductor of Somerset County Youth Orchestra. Andrew is also an Adjudicator for The British and International Federation of Festivals.
