TRANSCRIPT
Welcome to The Early Years Team Training Directory detailing early years
and childcare courses in Gloucestershire. These courses are designed to
support implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage and are
delivered by the Local Authority Early Years Team and colleagues. Analysis
of practitioner evaluations underpins new course development and ensures
that training delivered is responsive to the market place and identified needs. Courses are run for
practitioners in schools, settings, childminders and the out of school sector. There is a small charge for
attending some courses, please see individual courses for details.
Training is a fundamental part of professional development. Ofsted and Gloucestershire County Council have
an expectation that staff will access training in order to keep their practice up to date, reflect on their
effectiveness and to continue to improve. The Early Years Quality Improvement and Support Programme
recommends that a minimum of four days’ training for staff is accessed during the course of a year.
This Spring edition of the directory covers all courses taking place between January and March 2018. Due to
the high demand for places most courses are limited to a maximum of 2 practitioners per setting. There is
an expectation that learning will be cascaded throughout the setting, this will eliminate the need for multiple
bookings of staff on the same course over several terms.
Please read the course description carefully to ensure the course is suitable for you and to ensure that you
bring with you all required materials. If settings are unable to attend a booked course for any reason they
must advise the admin team prior to the event. Cancellations received less than 5 full working days before
the training will not be eligible for any refund and may be charged. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions
on p21 for further information.

INSPIRING CREATIVE PLAY: THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE NETWORK
WHO: Early Years Foundation Stage practitioners working in playgroups,
nurseries, crèches, children’s centres, out of school provision, schools and
childminders working with children from birth to the end of their reception year.
WHAT: The philosophy of the Inspiring Creative Play network is based on the
sharing and building of good practice in order to create a ‘community of practice’.
The network consists of practitioners who share a passion for something that they
do and together learn how to do it better. Creating and thinking critically is one
of the characteristics of effective learning and teaching and as such underpins all
areas of learning and development. The importance of creativity and critical
thinking that underpins all areas of learning is a prime focus. The group inspires
new ideas and is keen to support practitioners who attend through active learning
and exploration of lines of enquiry. Together we inspire ideas to take away,
signpost to research and provide a ’real’ experience on which to base further
co-constructed play and learning with children.

CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING FOR
DESIGNATED SAFEGUARDING LEADS (DSL)
Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) Training (previously DCPO)
Gloucestershire Safeguarding Children Board (GSCB), will continue to
deliver DSL training. These courses are fully subsidised and provide staff
with essential training.
The Foundation Training Day is for Designated Officers with an overall
responsibility for safeguarding within their setting. This includes
childminders, as they are the DSL at their setting. This training must be
refreshed every two years. Details of courses can be found here: http://
www.gscb.org.uk/article/113487/Multi-Agency-Training-Courses
Revision/update training will provide designated officers with revision and
update of their previous knowledge in order to ensure their knowledge
reflects current practice and research.
Courses and availability can be found on the Gloucestershire Safeguarding
Children Board website www.gscb.org.uk
The Local Authority will fund up to three practitioners per daycare
setting.
CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING FOR STAFF OTHER THAN DSL
Basic Child Protection Induction and Refresher Courses
This training is for staff other than DSL’s who have not attended any child protection
training. The induction course is aimed at all early years and childcare practitioners
that have not attended any child protection training before. The refresher course is
for practitioners who have already attended a basic child protection course. GSCB
recommends this training is refreshed every 3 years.
Courses are delivered by Gloucestershire Safeguarding Children Board(GSCB). Course
dates and venues are available:
http://www.gscb.org.uk/coursebooking
Childminders should note that GSCB online child protection training is not sufficient
for Ofsted requirements; they must also complete face to face training.
Childminders (working with other childminders or assistants)
Childminders working with others in one setting, will be treated the same as a group
setting, such as a nursery or playgroup. It is good practice for each setting to have
two DSL’s, so there is cover for leave and support etc.
Existing Childminders (not working with another childminder or assistants)
All existing childminders, who are not assistants or working with another childminder,
should contact GSCB directly when their current child protection certificate expires
(expiry should be 2 years from the date of the certificate for those who are to be a
DSL) to enrol on their one day Inter-Agency Child Protection training course. This
needs to be updated every two years with a GSCB half day revision course. Both of
these courses are fully funded.
If you have any questions, please contact the Adult Education Team

PAEDIATRIC FIRST AID
First Aid for Child Carers (Paediatric First Aid)
Gloucestershire Local Authority will make a funding contribution towards the cost of paediatric First Aid training for childminders and settings, not schools. On
completion of an appropriate EYFS compliant training settings may apply for payment of up to £60 per practitioner up to a maximum of 3 practitioners per setting
per financial year (1st April-31st March).
To receive the funding contribution childminders and practitioners should email a scanned copy of their certificate, which must be from a company providing EYFS
compliant training, together with a receipt for payment. Email address to be used is [email protected]. You must indicate clearly whether
you are a registered childminder, childminder currently going through the registration process or which daycare setting you are from. Payment will be
made by BACs (bank transfer), usually during the month following receipt of the certificate. Cheque payments are no longer possible, therefore if you have not
already done so, you must complete and return the BACs form on the website giving your bank details.
Childminders currently going through the registration process will be eligible to apply for reimbursement on completion of a recognised EYFS training course, such
as the GCC course ‘First Steps to Childminding’. Please email a scanned copy of your certificate showing completion of the course together with your First Aid
certificate, plus receipt.
Applications for funding must be received within 3 months of the date of training.
The table on our web pages includes details of some of the providers running EYFS compliant Paediatric First Aid courses in Gloucestershire. This is provided for
your information only and is not an endorsement of any course in particular. These providers are independent companies who are not quality assured by
Gloucestershire County Council, neither is there any commissioning arrangement with them. Practitioners may elect to undertake training with any provider they
choose but are reminded of the statutory requirement to have completed a first aid course that is EYFS compliant. Practitioners will take full responsibility for
booking staff on to courses and GCC will not be involved in any booking disputes or attendance issues.
Several of these providers will also offer whole setting training; please contact them direct for further details.
Please note this funding is subject to availability and is no guarantee of future funding.

well in advance of the training date and arrive
punctually as some of the venues are booked for a
limited time. The trainer will begin the training at
the start time stated in our Training Directory and
in your reminder email. Arriving late could mean that
you miss vital information and that you disrupt
attendees already present. Venue addresses are in

directions from the internet.
All our training venues are strictly non-smoking.

Tea, coffee and water will be provided except where

Cancellation / Non Attendance of Training
Sessions (blue section in the directory)
If you are unable to attend any training you must
notify the Early Years Team in writing (by email)
giving as much notice as possible and the reasons for
the cancellation.
Unless there are exceptional extenuating
circumstances, if you fail to attend or fail to cancel
within 5 full working days prior to the start of the
first training course no refund of fees paid will be
given.
Settings who fail to attend a free course or who
cancel less than 5 full working days prior to the
start of a free course may be charged an
administration fee of £25 unless there are
exceptional extenuating circumstances.
Settings on EYIP who fail to attend a course or who
cancel less than 5 full working days prior to the
start of the course may be charged an
administration fee of £25.
Practitioners are required to attend the whole
duration of the course; leaving early is not
acceptable and we may charge an administration fee
of £25.
Cancellation / Non Attendance of Meetings and/or
Information Sessions (green section in the
directory)
If you are unable to attend any training you must
notify the Early Years Team in writing (email), giving
as much notice as possible and the reasons for the
cancellation.
Settings who fail to attend a meeting or information
session, or who cancel less than five full working
days prior to the start of the course, may be
charged an administration fee of £25, unless there
are exceptional extenuating circumstances.
As we are restricted to numbers by venues for
health and safety reasons and practicalities, we must
stress the importance of booking onto these
sessions, even if you are hosting a session. If there
are low attendance numbers, it may be that we have
to cancel sessions.
Trainer cancellation
In the unlikely event of having to cancel or postpone
a course, we will make every effort to contact you
well in advance and offer you an alternative date or a
refund of any fees paid. If a trainer is ill on the day
of delivery, the training may have to be cancelled on
the same day. We will contact settings by telephone,
using the number you have provided on your online
booking form.
Record of Continuous Professional Development
Remember to bring with you your CPD Record for the
trainer to sign. Please note the trainer will only sign
the record on completion of the whole course.
Records may be downloaded from our website.
Feedback
Please remember that you are attending a course on
behalf of your setting and there is an expectation
that you will share what you have learnt with others
in your setting. Please arrange a suitable time for
this with your manager. We suggest you share the
main points from the training which will improve
quality within the setting.
Effective feedback from practitioners will eliminate
the need for multiple bookings of staff on the same
course over a series of terms.
