RIGHTLY PREPARED

When anyone mentions the month of December, most of us quickly think of Christmas and the things involved with its celebration. It cer-tainly is the biggest worldwide celebration and observance for the year even though many do not connect the coming of Jesus with their cele-brations. Christmas was not like this in the early years of the Christian church. For them, Easter was the greatest celebration. Over time Christmas grew in its popularity so that it has become what it is today.

The church has not given up its way of preparing for Christmas – and it isn't buying gifts early or doing pre-Christmas baking and cooking. The church uses the four Sundays before Christmas to remind us of who was sent by God and why this is so important for us and the world.

Even though it seems strange to talk about the end of the world to pre-pare for Christmas, we need to know that our lives and the existence of our world will not last forever. This truth is one reason why Jesus was sent. Through him, we have an eternal existence with God that death and the destruction of the world cannot take away. Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and ascension are the great gifts given to all people. We all are condemned by God when we stand alone before him. But the Baby Jesus – the one who would be crucified – stands with us before God.

Jesus is the promised Messiah. The people of God were looking for the Messiah's coming for many years. He had to come as a human being, a descendant of David, and the only one who could save us from our sin-fulness. Christmas had to happen and the Old Testament foretold some of the events leading up to the coming of the Messiah, which we use to help us prepare.

St. Paul gives us a good description of Christmas in Philippians 2: 5-11.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emp-tied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly ex-alted him and bestowed on him the name that is above eve-ry name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

I encourage you to use these four Sundays before Christmas to help you and your family to rightly prepare for the birth of the Christ Child. He is the gift that no earthly gift given or received can come close in

matching. Christmas is about Jesus, and it is Jesus who gives us true joy and excitement on Christmas Day.

Life Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates

Life up your heads, ye mighty gates:

Behold, the King of glory waits!

The King of kings is drawing near,

The Savior of the world is here.

O blest the land, the city blest,

Where Christ the ruler is con-fessed!

O happy hearts and happy homes

To whom this King of triumph comes!

Fling wide the portals of your heart:

Make it a temple, set apart

From earthly use for heav’n’s employ,

Adorned with prayer and love and joy.

Redeemer, come! I open wide

My heart to Thee: here, Lord, abide!

Let me Thy inner presence feel:

Thy grace and love in us reveal.

So come, my sov’reign, enter in!

Let new and nobler life begin!

Thy Holy Spirit guide us on,

Until the glorious crown be won.

Life Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates

Georg Weissel (1590-1635)

Translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-18178)

The words King David used in Psalm 24 to celebrate the arrival of God’s presence in Jerusalem inspired this beautiful Christmas hymn. Georg Weissel recognized that Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem was the ultimate fulfillment of the ancient psalmist’s praise. On that first Christmas, God came to be with us in a new way. He was Immanuel — “God with us.”

Weissel was a German scholar, teacher, and pastor who died at the height of the Thirty Years’ War — a period of un-speakable horror in Germany. Due to the war, repeated plagues, and other disasters, the population of sixteen million dwindled to only six million in thirty short years. Despite the horrors that surrounded him, Weissel found a reason for rejoicing because of God’s arrival in our world in the person of Jesus Christ. It was the birth of Jesus in Christmas that made it possible for God to enter each of our hearts, beginning the transformation of our lives and our world from the inside out.

Lift up your heads, O gates!

And be lifted up, O ancient doors,

That the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord, strong and mighty,

The Lord, mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O gates!

And lift them up, O ancient doors,

That the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord of Hosts,

He is the King of glory! Psalm 24: 7-10

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:

During this season of thanksgiving, the preschool is thankful for the many blessings the Lord contin-ues to show us. All of our students and staff have remained healthy as we navigate COVID-19, our fami-lies have shown an abundance of support in regards to safety protocols and helping meet ongoing needs. Our students continue to thrive amongst our current situation.

Like many others, the preschool is facing obstacles due to COVID-19. Our enrollment has reduced by approximately 40%. Families have chosen not to enroll their children for a variety of reasons including financial hardship and the unknown risks and fears that follow COVID-19. The preschool has made ad-justments within the program, but are still facing unknowns in our budget and resources.

At this time, we are asking for you to prayerfully consider making a love offering to the preschool on Sunday, December 20th. We will be taking up a door offering on that day. We know that God’s plan is greater than we can imagine and that the ministry of the preschool is deeply rooted within our commu-nity.

In Him,

Tiffani Logan
