Time to say Goodbye
Dear Friends,
We have rather reluctantly and very rapidly it seems, come to the time of saying farewell and thank you for all that living in Pitton has meant to us during the past sixteen years.
We both thank you very much for your friendship and support during the good times, the difficult times and the sad times; the memorable farewell at St Peter’s and the generous parting gifts. All will be etched in our memories for ever and we shall always keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
As we face new challenges ahead, we hope that you will keep in touch and for those who are gallant enough to make the journey, we look forward to welcoming you to Perth, WA. We’re only an email or phone call away!
Our love and best wishes to everyone,
Margaret and Barry ([email protected])

One day an expert was speaking to a group of business students and,
to drive home a point, used an illustration those students would never
forget. As this man stood in front of the group of high-powered
achievers, he said, ‘OK, time for a quiz.’ Then he pulled out a one
gallon, wide mouthed mason jar and set it on the table in front of
him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully
placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the
top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, ‘Is this jar full?’
Everyone in the class said, ‘Yes’. Then he said, ‘Really?’ He
reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he
dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to
work themselves down into the spaces between the big rocks. Then
he asked the group once more, ‘Is this jar full?’ (By this time the
class were onto him). ‘Probably not,’ one of them answered.
‘Good’ he replied. He reached under the table and brought out a
bucket of sand. He started pouring the sand in and it went into all the
spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the
question, ‘Is this jar full?’ ‘No’ the class shouted. Once again he
said ‘Good!’ Then he grabbed a jar of water and began to pour it in
until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked up at the class and
asked ‘What is the point of this illustration?’ Someone answered,
‘The point is, no matter how full your diary is, if you try really hard,
you can always fit some more things into it!’ ‘No’ the speaker
replied, ‘that’s not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is:
If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.’
This is a well known illustration that was used by Steven Covey, the
great management guru, to teach an awareness of priorities. As
September begins after the slower and more restful period of summer
let’s hope that we can all manage to get our priorities right in our
daily lives, so that we are governed, not by
the pressures of daily living, but by what’s
important in life!

From Revd Jane Dunlop, August 2016
I am writing this nearly three weeks after the Brexit vote to leave the European
Union, and in that time it seems as though our political system has been thrown
into turmoil. Not only are we no longer to be part of the EU, but we have a
new Prime Minister and the Labour Party is in conflict over its leadership.
I decided to write this letter about our future political situation because it is still
very much at the forefront of people’s consciousness. We are living in
unsettling times and the Referendum seems to have opened deep divisions
within the country. It is our human instinct to want to fix it, to find an
immediate solution and to deal with what has happened but we need to be
patient, to work towards the right long term outcome.
In this letter I want to bring to you the view of the Church in light of the debate
of the General Synod of the Church of England on 8th July. During the debate
the Archbishops warned that rushing too swiftly to reconciliation would be a
mistake when the nation is still reacting to the impact of the vote. The debate
concluded when the Synod voted unanimously to welcome the Archbishops'
call for all to unite in the common task of building a generous and forward
looking country, contributing to human flourishing around the world, and to
encourage all members of the Church of England to play their part actively in
partnership with everyone in Civil Society in pursuit of this task.
The Synod commended the work already carried out by the Church in bringing
communities together and recommended that as a minimum every bishop identify a champion in their diocese to assess what more the Church can do and
to make recommendations for creating stronger and more constructive links
between local communities as a basis for achieving this common task.
I also would like to bring to your attention the words the Bishop of Salisbury,-
Bishop Nicholas, wrote following the Referendum;-
‘We are now preparing to leave the EU but we are still European. It is vital that we keep a vision of how we belong together in this world. The vote was about what political institutions will best support us in our being people who are English, British, European and global citizens. Love mercy, act justly, walk humbly with God and one another (Micah 6.8). Ours is a diverse, tolerant and creative society. That has seemed a considerable strength of the UK. Our task as a Church is to live as people who love God and love our neighbour as ourselves. That might prove to be a very challenging Christian witness in our present circumstances.’
My prayer is that everyone, including our political leaders, will take these
words of our Archbishops and Bishop Nicholas to heart and act on them in the
months and years to come.
With Love, Jane

Telecoms watchdog seeks rural volunteers
Telecoms watchdog Ofcom wants rural people to tell it about the broadband challenges they face.
Ofcom said it wanted to find out more about the “rural broadband experience” by encouraging rural people to join its research panel.
Ofcom said it existed to make communications markets work for everyone. One of the ways it did so was by conducting research to find out about the customer experience across the UK.
Each year, Ofcom reports its findings in its flagship Connected Nations report – which provides a snapshot of the state of the UK communication network.
To inform this and wider work, Ofcom is calling for volunteers to sign up to join its expanded research panel of broadband customers.
Ofcom said it was “particularly looking to sign up more people who live in rural areas in order find out more about the challenges they face”.
Potential participants are encouraged to sign up via Ofcom’s partner’s website at signups.samknows.com/ofcom. Volunteers who meet Ofcom’s sample requirements will be sent a unit to plug into a mains socket and connect to their home broadband router.
If you have any questions or would like further information about this work, please contact Jose Kurian at [email protected]

Copyright and you
It is not always easy to discern what is best or tell genuine from false. A
friend of mine asked me for some advice about a letter she had received.
The document was from a firm of lawyers in Europe seeking a large
amount of compensation for misuse of copyright in the UK. The lawyers
claimed that a professional photographer’s picture had appeared on a
website without the owner’s permission. A lot of money was claimed
but if they responded immediately they could settle for a reduced
amount.
Copyright is legal right that protects the use of your work. For example
it protects a writer from anyone else copying their work and selling
copies. It also applies to photographs. You do not need to be a
professional to get copyright protection, and remember it is the person
that takes the photograph who gets the rights, so if someone takes a
photo of my house they own the copyright not me even though it is my
house.
If you have a website, whether you design it yourself or get someone else
to you must check that any pictures are available and not in copyright.
Do not assume that because a photograph is on a website that it is out of
copyright. If you publish a parish magazine always consider if you have
the right permission to use illustrations. Ask who took the photo and
print a credit such as “thanks to Joe Bloggs for photo of flower festival”.
If it is an illustration from a website ask permission first.
As always, this is a complex area of law so get advice.

Proof that women equal problems.
To find a woman, you need time and money, therefore:
1. Woman = Time x Money
“Time is money”, so
2. Time = Money
Therefore, 1 can also read:
Woman = Money x Money
or 3. Woman = Money²
“Money is the root of all problems”, therefore:
4. Money = √ Problems
Therefore 3 can be restated as:
5. Woman = (√ Problems)²
which gives Woman = Problems

Uses and abuses of language
It is said that language should be allowed to develop, or else it will die.
Yes, but the thing that slightly bugs me is the invention of a word when
a perfectly suitable one already exists. Often it isn’t someone being
inventive with language (a Shakespeare, for example), but a media hack,
unable or perhaps too lazy to find the correct word, who abuses the
language.
Take the word impact, for example. Although it can be used as a verb,
these days it is often used instead of affect, and the meaning isn’t the
same. For example, ‘the breeze affected my cycling speed’ is fine, but
‘the breeze impacted my cycling speed’ is not.
Watching the Olympic Games on television recently has frequently
made me cringe on behalf of our language. Apparently competitors
have ‘medalled’, or even ‘podiumed’. Is this a presenter trying to
impress us with American culture? Or just being ignorant? Either way,
I don’t think it’s very clever. I know that language is just a means of
communicating, and if the receiver understands the meaning of what is
being said then it works, but these kind of words really grate on me.
What could be worse? Well, if I hear a British presenter ever say “the
winningest” I’m likely to throw something at the TV; as it is, usually I
can just look up to the sky and think “oh well, what can you do, they’re
American”.
The other media irritation from the Olympics is the phrase “the most
successful Olympian of all time” or “the most decorated Olympian”.
Just because an outstanding swimmer who excels in a couple of strokes
(say, freestyle and butterfly) wins medals in both strokes at 100m,
200m, two relays, medley, etc - does that make him/her more
‘successful’ than, say, a rower who puts everything into one race (they
rarely compete in two)? I think not, but that doesn’t stop the media
sensationalising anything they can.
I should stop before I am accused of being pedantic, but before I do, I
just want to say that I am hugely impressed with all the athletes
competing at the Olympics, but maybe we Brits should tread carefully
congratulating ourselves on winning more medals then ever before when
the number of sports increases each time - tennis, golf, rugby for
example - in all of which we won medals, so have we really done better
than before?
