Section 1: Introduction (NO SPOILERS)====================================================

Forward

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Why did I write this?

Because I just lost something like 8 hours of work to an ending on this I didn't want. And the sad thing is I'm sitting here with the Official Prima book open on my desk and the official Prima Online Guide open in another tab of this browser. Next to me is another computer with multiple google searches up on it related to this exact topic. So with all that "guide" available to me, why did I just lose 8 hours? Why will I yet STILL have to go back half way through the quest to recover? Because there is just NO really good information out there for how this plays out.

This quest is almost as complicated as the Orlesion Game itself, and without knowing what's going to happen, you have no idea how to get an outcome that works for you.

What follows then is a COMPLETE guide to EVERY POSSIBLE ending and all of the effects of all of the choices within Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. Unfortunately I have NOT completed the game, so I don't KNOW how any of the endings play out in the Epilogue. That said a post on Page 2 (Post 29) does now have all this information laid out.

This is written in the hopes that it is useful to someone, and by the look at the number of reply posts, it seems to be.

Non-Spoiler Quest Basic Information---------------------------------------------------------------------

The basis of Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts is to find out who is out to assassinate the leader of the Orlesian Nation: Celene. You will also meet two other nobles of Orlais: Gaspard and Briala, the three of which become the central characters in the quest. During the quest you will have a minor task to build up approval rating with the "court" by doing things they approve of (cow-towing to nobles, talking politely, etc.) and you will berequiredto slowly lose approval points by entering locations you are not supposed to enter.

* There are 2 Sub-Quests that can be completed based upon your choices. "The Great Blackmail Hunt" (referred to in this guide as the "Secrets" quest as that is the item you gather) and "Throwing Money Away" (referred to in this guide as the "Coins" quest as these, again, are the item you gather to complete the quest). Neither Quest needs be completed to finish the main quest, nor does anything you do with Secrets or Coins affect the endings available to you during or after Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. Too, both quests can be partially turned in at any point, providing you additional court approval rating and Inquisition Influence (In the case of Secrets).

* There is a 3rd Sub-Quest that MUST be completed to allow you to make the choices mentioned above. "Herd of Stone Halla" (referred to as "Halla" in this guide for the same reasons above) requires that you collect Halla statues laying around the Winter Palace. When you collect enough of them, you will be able to open specific doors.

* There is a 4th Quest available to you if you choose to bring along Sera to the party. (This is undocumented in any guide but this one...don't think you'll find this in Prima's Walkthrough).

* This entire quest is about how you spend the limited resources you have at your disposal (Namely Halla Statues). There are 11 available Halla statues and 7 Doors that can only be unlocked with these statues. Unfortunately, to open all 7 of these doors would require 23 Halla Statues. As you can tell, only a few of the doors will be able to be unlocked in any given play through. Some doors have loot, some doors provide additional endings, some doors allow you to complete quests. One door is required to be opened to progress the main quest (you cannot screw this up and it's clearly marked as to which door that is).

* There is only ONE Door that is REQUIRED to be unlocked to complete Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, everything else is optional.

* It is recommended (though not required) that you have the Inquisition Perk giving you additional knowledge about Nobles and Nobility and to bring Sera as one of your companions during this quest. This will provide you the best options for obtaining the most out of quests and additional operations at the war table after this main quest is over.

* There is an additional ending you are provided if you fail the quest. Failing occurs if you lose all of your court approval rating. From my play-throughs this is IMPOSSIBLE without intentionally making it happen. There is simply no way to lose that much approval in a normal play through.

* To avoid puling your hair out, there are actually two different "legs" to this quest: Pre-Servant's Quarters and Post-Servant's Quarters. Some coins and secrets DO NOT APPEAR and CANNOT BE FOUND prior to the "Post-Servant's Quarters" part of the quest. If you are following a map and standing on top of a coin or secret location and can't find anything, it's likelynot there yet. Continue through the quest line till you have completed the servant's quarters section and then check again.

* When working with Eavesdropping Secrets, continue triggering the red circle till it goes away. There are several places where the same evesdropping conversation stops and then starts again giving you a second secret. There are also locations where you might get a "that wasn't useful" response, but the red circle continues to appear. Again, keep clicking till the circle goes away.

* Finally, ALL ENDINGS GIVE 3200 INFLUENCE. Ignore any guide or other documentation telling you that certain options are better for the Inquisition. Other than loot and epilogue story, all endings to this quest give the Inquisition the same outcome in influence. The only way to increase that influence is by completing the two sub-quests within the story line.

====================================================

Section 2: General Advice (MINOR SPOILERS)====================================================

* The Sub-Quests can only be completed with the use of Halla Statues. YouCANcomplete both (or all three if you brought Sera) by opening a specific set of doors...you do have the statues available for this.

* If you have the inquisition perk for additional knowledge of nobles, you can get a "crown" option to dance with the Dowager upon conversing with her (I think the option appears after returning to the ball room after the first set of bells). Selecting this option will provide you an additional mission on the War Table. - Thank you Psychocandy and DuckDuckPotato for this information.

* If you bring Sera with you, she gives you a quest that gives you extra loot, exp and influence, to complete this quest and get all the chests you will need to go to the lower garden, forcing some choices in Halla statue usage. - Thank you Viruk.

* There are three pieces of equipment obtainable as rewards for this quest. However, the choices you make will provide you either both masks or the bow, you cannot get both in the same playthrough.

-- Mask of the Grand Duchess (12% Crit Chance, +6 Cunning)-- Mask of Chalons (5% Crit Chance, +5 Cunning)-- The Trepanner's Requital (105 DPS, 93 Damage, 16% Armor Penetration, +11 Dexterity, +15% Flank Damage, On Kill - Explode for 75% Weapon Damage). The options you pick below when dealing with the Enemy will allow you to obtain either both masks or the bow, but not all three (bow and masks are mutually exclusive). If you are in this JUST for the equipment, make the best choice for your party. That said, given that you can make bows better than these, but are unlikely to be able to make helms of the same quality as you get here for a while, I personally believe the masks are the better prizes.

* The Empress forces an either or choice - You cannot be good with both Celene and Gaspard. Specifically if you choose the options for the good of Celene at the end, you are choosing the bad route for Gaspard.

* There are 11 total Halla Statues, even if the quest only shows 10, you can get 11. One of these is REQUIRED by the story to be spent, leaving 10.

* The number of Halla Statues is Limited by Design. There are 7 doors you can open with statues:

--> The first is Mandatory and MUST be unlocked to complete Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts.-- Opening the Locked Door on the Upper Balcony of the Guest Gardens (Upper Gardens) (1 Statue)

-->The next three are major quest areas that further one or more of the quests available.-- Opening the Locked Door on the Second Floor of the Guest Apartments (3 Statues)

-- Opening the Door to the Lower Guest Garden (3 States)

-- Opening Celene's Private Bedroom in the Royal Quarters (5 Statues)

--> The last three are Treasure Only Related-- Opening the Melee Treasure Room Door at the End before Closing out the Quest (5 Statues)

-- Opening the Wizard Treasure Room Door at the End before Closing out the Quest (5 Statues)

-- Opening the Treasure Door in the "front lawn" area before entering the Palace (1 Statue)

* The Treasure Door you'll run across outside the compound on the "front lawn" ONLY unlocks for treasure: You may consider skipping that first door...it is NOT required and opens up more choices...especially for better loot later. Remember that you have a total of 10 Halla to play with outside of the required 1...make sure you come in knowing what doors you're going to unlock.

* The quest "The Great Blackmail Hunt" requires you to open Celene's Private Bedroom. - Provides 160 Influence and 125xp

* The quest "Throwing Money Away" requires you to openBOTHCelene's Private Bedroom and the Lower Guest Garden. - It Provides 200 Influence.

* If you choose to complete both quests, you lock yourself out from one of the two "special" endings. You can get both special ending options and still complete the "Secrets" quest, but not "Coins". Regardless of how many ending options you have, however, you will only be able to choose one.

* You can choose to ignore all special endings and go only for "Loot" by opening both of the two ending treasure doors.Keep in mind, though, that the other "quest" related doors have loot associated with them also, and there is loot given out based upon the ending you choose to the quest as well. While the Treasure Room Doors do give out greatrandomloot, picking specific endings givesspecifictreasure. Keep in mind if you chose a "best loot for me" path through this quest.

* You MUST turn in Throwing Money Away (Coins) and The Great Blackmail Hunt (Secrets) prior to entering the final fight with "The Enemy" on the second floor of the Royal Quarters. Once that fight commences, you DO NOT have an opportunity to turn anything from those quests in. This means if you choose to finish these quests, you'll need to hit the Empress's Quarters, backtrack to turn in the quests (Ball Room and Garden) and then re-enter the Royal Quarters to finish up the final fight.

* There is a special option to deal with "The Enemy" if your court approval rating is 85 or over when you step back into the ball room at the end of the quest. I recommend all play throughs meet the 85 approval rating mark unless you are trying to intentionally get the "failed mission" ending on a playthrough. There are NO benefits to being between 1 and 84 Court Approval.

* There is MORE than enough court approval to go around to get all the items you want and still be above the 85 mark in court approval by the end of the quest. Just don't "AFK" off pause while standing in a restricted area and you should be fine...I know when I played this through the first time I was practically panicked about getting to the 85 mark...it's not that big a deal. Remember that turning in Secrets and Coins bumps your approval rating, even if you do not COMPLETE those quests, you should still be collecting and periodically turning in what you've collected.

====================================================

Section 3: Quest Analysis (*MAJOR* Spoilers)====================================================

Editor's Note: This section got pretty confusing pretty quickly with the way I had it written previously...where all of the information was presented separately based upon event and choice. This is a major re-write to attempt to consolidate the information required to complete the quest based upon the ending of choice. We start with the various paths through the story and then direct users to the relevant section of the document to provide them the information to get to the chosen path. I hope this provides less confusion than the previous version of the guide did.

Quest End Overview---------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 2 major decision points at the end of Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, each has implications for friendship and loot obtained from the quest. The first decision point (what you do with the Assassin Florianne) has implications for the second choice (Dealing with the Orlesian Leaders).

Specifically, if you choose to let Celene live, she MUST take the throne, there is no option to support Gaspard or Briala over Celene, even if you have all the blackmail evidence. Too, bad things happen to either Gaspard or Briala if Celene lives, and potentially both if you so choose. That said, all endings are pretty much choose 1 person over the other two. The best case scenario for anyone who doesn't win this one is exile...with execution being the most common punishment for losing the game. If you are an RP'er playing this, be aware that your choice most likely spells the death for whoever you didn't choose...and has further implications in the epilogue.

That said, there are two "special" endings that let "good" things happen to more than 1 person.

The first is the "force everyone to work together" ending. On the downside, this forces you into the worst RANDOM loot selection in the quest AND the worst GUARANTEED loot selection in the quest, and, according to some posts about this on the net, the worst "Epilogue" for Orlais as well. On the upside of this one, you have the opportunity to complete both sub-quests (secrets and coins) so you get the best influence / xp gain possible here. Completing both sub-quests nets you 360 Influence and +125 XP over and above the 3200 Influence and something like 9500 XP you gain for completing Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts.

The second special ending is the "Help Celene and Briala 'Make Up' with each other" ending. The upside here is, if you follow the advice above, you get better RANDOM loot, and really good GUARANTEED loot, and from what I understand the Epilogue ending may be the best for Orlais (though there is some conflicting information on that one). You lose out on being able to complete AT LEAST the coins quest, and (depending on your choices, see the Halla doors information in Section 4) the secrets quest, as well, thus losing the influence and xp gains from them.

End of Quest Options---------------------------------------------------------------------

Follows is a list of all of the options available when ending the quest line.

-- Expose Her - Celene Lives, No Fight with Florianne.

-- -- Kill Florianne Yourself

-- -- Hand Florianne Over to the Guards

(2) - Only available if you choose the "Allow Assassination" option in "Dealing with Florianne"

In-Depth Path Guide---------------------------------------------------------------------

Editor's Note: The following attempts to consolidate the various bits of information I had scattered throughout this section into a single location based upon the choice of outcome the player wants for this quest. Instead of breaking information out by major choices (what to do with Florianne and What to do with Celene/Briala/Gaspard), I'll consolidate into a single ending based guide. Hopefully this is more useful.

Notations Used in the Sections Below:(CHOICE) options are exclusive of one another.

Section 4: Other Information (*MAJOR* Spoilers)====================================================

Halla Statue Uses:---------------------------------------------------------------------

* Opening the Locked Door on the Upper Balcony of the Guest Gardens (Upper Gardens) (1 Statue)Required to complete Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts, the quest will not progress till you have entered this room and discovered the document on the floor implicating Gaspard/Briala in murdering the Ambassadors.

-- You MUST unlock this, no other options.

* Opening the Locked Door on the Second Floor of the Guest Apartments (3 Statues)Required to unlock the "Celene and Briala Make Up" special ending. This room also contains some good loot and an Amulet of Power. It's the best "loot" room in the Palace other than the two treasure rooms at the end.

-- Unlock this if you want the "Celene and Briala Make Up" ending.

-- Unlock this if you want the most options available to you in making a decision at the end of the quest. (i.e. You want to play through the quest and make the decision based off how you feel at the end of playing it and want the most options available to you).

-- Unlock this for the best "balanced loot" playthrough (i.e. You're not focusing on best loot, most influence, etc. You want a good mix of all of it).

* Opening the Door to the Lower Guest Garden (3 States)Required to complete the "Coins" sub-quest and to complete the quest Sera gives you (providing Loot, Influence and XP). Best unlocked in a "Force them to work together" ending or where you're interested in completing Sera's quest. There's little to no loot down here except for a banner that will provide you a decoration for Skyhold.

-- Unlock this if you want to complete the Coins Quest.

-- Unlock this if you want to complete Sera's Quest.

-- Unlock this if you are going for a "Work Together" ending.

-- Unlock this if you just HAVE to Talk to Varrick during the quest (assuming you brought him).

-- Unlock this if you must have the banner to display in Skyhold.

* Opening Celene's Private Bedroom in the Royal Quarters (5 Statues)Required to complete the "Work Together Ending" (Make sure you force the tied down soldier to testify, don't just leave him there or you can't make the "work together" ending work). Also required to complete both the "Coins" and "Secrets" sub-quests. There is loot in the room also, but it's about the third best (Treasure rooms are first, Guest Apartment Room is Second, this is Third).

-- Unlock this if you are going for a "work together" ending.

-- Unlock this to complete either or both the Secrets and Coins quests. Remember you can complete Secrets and not Coins.

-- Unlock this for the hilarity of your party's reactions to seeing a naked tied down soldier in Celene's Bed (no nudity).

* Opening the Melee Treasure Room Door at the End before Closing out the Quest (5 Statues)Optional in all cases, this is the room with the warrior symbol on the door. Opening this will provide you several lootable items with a focus on melee class loot. There is the possibility of one or more random purple level loot drops within this room. This will be the best warrior/rogue loot room in the Palace.

-- Unlock this if you are going for a "normal" ending playthrough (Celene, Gaspard or Briala on the throne alone) and you have the halla statues to do so.

* Opening the Wizard Treasure Room Door at the End before Closing out the Quest (5 Statues)Optional in all cases, this is the room with the mage symbol on the door. Opening this will provide you several lootable items with a focus on mage class loot. There is the possibility of one or more random purple level loot drops within this room. This will be the best mage loot room in the Palace.

-- Unlock this if you are going for a "normal" ending playthrough (Celene, Gaspard or Briala on the throne alone) and you have the halla statues to do so.

* Opening the Treasure Door in the "front lawn" area before entering the Palace (1 Statue)Optional in all cases. This room is unmarked but the only unlock-able door in the "front lawn" area of the palace. Note that you MUST Unlock this door before you enter the Vestibule of the Winter Palace as you CANNOT come back out to it (unless you opt to fight Florianne at the end, where you will end up with the option to loot this room then too). The room gives a smattering of low to mid level loot (Grey and Blue loot) and is likely the worst "locked room" loot in the Palace.

-- Unlock this only if you do not have plans to use all of the Halla statues you're going to find. Many playthroughs end up with one or two extra Halla statues and as such this is a fine room to open for a little extra loot.

Available Equipment List---------------------------------------------------------------------

Quest Bugs

------------------

Bad Loot - "Make Up" Ending:

There IS be a bug with the "Make Up" ending to this quest. The guaranteed loot drop ending SUCKS. You end up with two blue masks instead of two purple one blue. As noted below, the ACTUAL loot supposedly acquired through this ending is:

* Mask of the Empress (+12% Barrier Damage, +6 Cunning) - Purple

* Ambassador's Mask (+9% Crit Damage, +6 Cunning) - Purple

* Mask of Valmont (9% Barrier Damage, +5 Cunning) - Blue

HOWEVER What you really end up with is:

* Mask of Valmont (9% Barrier Damage, +5 Cunning) - Blue* Coquin Mask (9% Crit Damage, 5% Cunning) - Blue

Along with whatever equipment you got from the "Dealing with Florianne" ending. Meaning without the bug you end up with 3 purple masks and a 2 blue masks, while as with the bug you end up with 1 purple mask and 3 blue masks.
