Soon after we purchased our new home on

Second Street Pike, we were asked if we would

like to become a polling place. Some members of

the congregation were involved in local politics.

They were aware that a new polling place was

needed and they thought their synagogue might

offer its facilities. I jumped at the idea.

Over the years, being a polling place for the

community has presented certain conflicts. For

many years, we had a Hebrew School shift that

met on Sunday and Tuesday afternoon.

Whenever a large turnout was expected, we

canceled Hebrew School on voting day. There

still are some issues involving those working the

polls not bringing in food from our neighbors next

door and when the primary is during Passover,

things become even a bit stickier. It has been

worth it, in my eyes, to work through any and all

issues that might arise. We are providing a public

service to our local community and I am delighted

that non Jews have an opportunity to enter our

synagogue to vote. And there is more.

Throughout most of Jewish history in the

diaspora, there was no operative concept of a

citizen. If there were, we would have been third

or fourth class at best. America was and is

different of course. While there have been social

restrictions, educational and employment

limitations for Jews in America, we were never

excluded from participating in the political

process. I always believed and felt that the right

to vote is a tremendous gift and voting is a sacred

act. I was eligible to vote for the first time my

first year in college. I came home from New York

for the day to vote for Thacher Longstreth for

mayor of Philadelphia. It wasn’t the only time I

voted for the losing candidate. Since then, while

there may have been, I don’t recall not voting in a

general election and seldom have I skipped even a

primary race.

I don’t take for granted that we Jews are afforded

full privileges of first class citizenship in our great

country. Perhaps we are right in just taking our

right for granted because it should be taken for

granted by all American citizens regardless of race,

education or financial status. Within the context of

Jewish history however, I just can not take it for

granted.

Yes, this has been an unprecedented election season

in many ways. I remain surprised that the turnout

for elections, even the presidential, is not

significantly higher than it is. I recall learning in an

introductory political science class that some

segments of society don’t vote because they feel

that their vote just doesn’t matter. They may have

valid reason to feel as they do but I’m not sure they

or anyone helps themselves by opting out.

I hope we all opt in for the upcoming election. I

hope we all appreciate the importance and even the

power of our vote. Because elections are held on

regular work days, there is a certain amount of

inconvenience but I hope we all weather whatever

inconveniences there are and do our civic duty and

participate in the democratic process. I am glad that

all these years later, Ohev Shalom remains a polling

place for our immediate neighbors.

I always ask upcoming B’nai Mitzvah in our

synagogue what they are most excited about

regarding their big day. Periodically someone will

say they’re most excited that it will be all over. I

feel that way too about this election. I’m excited it

will all be over on November 9 but on November 8,

let’s all opt in and go out and Vote!

We nicknamed him “The Greeter.” On Rosh

Hashanah, when my children were young, we sat

near a man who seemed to greet almost every

congregant who walked in the door. Offering a

big smile and a warm hug, we watched with awe

and admiration, sure that his new year would be

especially sweet. How special to have such a

joyful role in our community! We didn’t know

many people at that time and although we were

very happy at Ohev Shalom, I don’t know that we

felt particularly connected.

With 3 small children and a full time job teaching, I

was not exactly looking for activities to fill my

time, but when the opportunity arose to help with

a scholar-in-residence weekend I stepped forward.

It was only a few hours of work, but I met many

people and started to feel that thread of

connection. My children became active in youth

group and choir. They, along with my husband,

joined the Ohev Shalom Players and performed in

many Ohev Shalom musicals. Simply being in the

building on a consistent basis and seeing familiar

faces who were now becoming friends made our

connection that much stronger. My husband

became Youth Chair, even sleeping over to

chaperone events. Eventually I became Education

Chair, and am currently 2nd Vice President. It is

now my goal that everyone who walks through our

doors can find that sense of connection.

Hopefully you were able to attend our “Be a Part of

It” activity fair on October 16th. There were more

than twenty groups and committees represented

and many, many ways to get involved. If you

couldn’t attend, it’s not too late. Read through the

list below and let me know where you’d like to

become involved. I’ll forward your name to the

appropriate person.

I hope to see you at New Member Shabbat services

on Friday, November 18th, as we welcome our new

members.

One of the best ways to feel connected is to take on

a leadership role, large or small. Our Leadership

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of

the British Commonwealth, recently wrote about

the connection between spirituality and listening in

an article that appeared in Jewishpress.com

(August 25, 2016) stating, “In Judaism we believe

that our relationship with G-d is an ongoing

tutorial in our relationships with other people …

How can we expect G-d to listen to us if we fail to

listen to our spouse, our children, or those

affected by our work? And how can we expect to

encounter G-d if we have not learned to listen?”

It’s fair to say that most of us try to listen, to each

other and certainly to G-d, but Michael Zimet, our

Congregant of the Month, makes listening a

priority. By listening, he finds ways to fill the

needs of many in his work, in our community and

at Ohev Shalom.

In 2004 Mike, his wife Marsha and then 10-year

old daughter Eliana, moved to Bucks County from

Mahopac, New York and began their search for a

new synagogue on the Internet. Despite the high-

tech approach, they were looking for a

“congregational family”, a sense of belonging inspired

in Mike by his father, who was a pulpit rabbi in

Poughkeepsie for 43 years. They found that

community at Ohev Shalom where they continue to

love celebrating being Jewish.

Mike strongly believes in giving people the channels

they need so that they can be heard. As President

of Dialogue Solutions, Mike lives his company’s

motto “Get People Talking” as he facilitates

employee-management relations by identifying issues

and concerns to build rapport and improve

communication. He also parlays those skills by co-

chairing his professional association’s global

campaign to help nonprofit agencies address their

communication issues so they, in turn, can better

serve their community.

While giving blood several years ago, Mike listened

to a Red Cross recruiter about the special needs of

cancer patients and he became a platelet donor. He

is now an apheresis ambassador for the American

Red Cross and has donated platelets more than 200

I began my Hebrew education at Ohev Shalom when I was in

third grade. I am now a seventh grader at Richboro Middle

School.

During the week and on the weekends I enjoy playing soccer.

The name of my team is Lower Southampton Dynamo United

and I have played for them since I was three and a half years

old. I also love watching the Green Bay Packers play football.

They are my favorite team and I’ve been a fan since I was a

young boy.

I would like to thank all of my Hebrew teachers, Cantor

Annelise and Allen Katz for helping me learn all the prayers

and my Torah portion for my Bar Mitzvah. I would also like

to thank my parents for inspiring me to practice every day

and my brother for always supporting me.

I cannot wait for my Bar Mitzvah and I know that I will have a

lot of fun!

I am a 7th grader at Richboro Middle School.

I am very active and enjoy participating in different activities.

This fall I am on the middle school field hockey team and will

try out for the track team in the spring. During the summer I

go to an overnight camp where I play many different sports

and bond with my summer sisters. When I am not busy with

activities, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, going to the

beach, and listening to music.

For my Bat Mitzvah project I raised money, volunteered, and

ran in the Race for Hope in memory of my grandfather.

I would like to thank Cantor Annelise for all her help

preparing me for my Bat Mitzvah. I also want to thank my

parents for always giving me their love and support.

times. One platelet donation can provide as many platelets as 12 to 18 whole blood donations, keeping a cancer patient

with a weakened immune system from being exposed to multiple donors.

Sensitive to the needs of his community after 9/11, Mike began taking security training and has continued his involvement

in security and disaster preparedness here in Bucks County. He recently navigated a sea of red tape to secure a FEMA

grant that will allow Ohev to enhance and upgrade our building and community security.

With all he does, Mike still finds time to be active in Men’s Club and will be honored as Man of the Year this December.

Mike spearheads the Yom HaShoah Candle Project. His efforts honor his paternal grandparents who were lost in the

Holocaust and raises funds for our Hebrew School students’ annual trip to the Holocaust Museum in D.C. Mike is also

the religious chair of Men’s Club, organizing the Men’s Club Shabbats and helping lead weekday and shiva minyans.

Mike describes his motivation to volunteer as being part of the family DNA. He states, “If you have the time, skills and abilities that can help

others, why not do it? Giving of your time can always make a difference.”

Thank you Mike, for making a difference at Ohev Shalom, and congratulations on being November’s Congregant of the Month.

Torah Fund supports

to ensure a healthy

future for Conservative

Judaism. These

institutions educate not

only Rabbis and Cantors, but educators,

administrators, social workers and lay leaders.

Torah Fund provides scholarships at all five

locations, JTS in NYC, The Ziegler School in LA,

Seminario in Argentina, Schechter Institute in

Jerusalem and the new Zacharias Frankel College

in Potsdam, Germany. Congregations benefit

from the education their members may have

received at these institutions.

Twenty years ago Ohev Shalom sent seven

students into the freshman class of the Albert A.

List College of Jewish Studies in conjunction with

Barnard and Columbia Colleges. Here is a story

of one of these fortunate students, my son Todd

Surden. Todd was a very good student at Council

Rock High School and a very active USYer here at

Ohev. Todd wanted to attend an Ivy League

university. When Rabbi Perlstein heard of Todd's

desires, he told him about List College. Todd was

very interested but immediately said, "A Rabbi I

am not sure. I always wanted to be a lawyer."

Rabbi told Todd, "List is not only for Rabbis but

you'll get a terrific liberal education and an Ivy

League degree." Todd applied, got a scholarship,

graduated and attended law school at Villanova

School of Law. What a thrill it was for my family to

attend three graduations in one week in the Spring

of 2001, one on the Columbia University Library

steps, one from List College and finally from the

Jewish Theological Seminary. Today Todd practices

law in Marietta, Georgia, and at 37 is President of his

synagogue, Etz Chaim of Marietta. Todd has also

been honored by being named to The Atlanta Jewish

Metropolitan Areas 40 under 40 rising stars when

he was 35. Todd has never regretted the education

and his experiences at Columbia and List along with

the many lasting friendships he formed. With your

donations to Torah Fund, you can enable students

to attend programs not only at the undergraduate

level but at the graduate level also.

Please consider giving at any level you might feel

comfortable to perpetuate lay and professional

leadership in the Jewish Community.

Read my next article in the Dove Tale where I will

high light another Ohev Shalomer who attended

programs supported by Torah Fund.

Fondly, Nina Surden Torah Fund Co-Chairperson.

Saving Sophie by Ronald H. Balson

From Ronald H. Balson, author of Once We Were Brothers, Sav-ing Sophie is the powerful story of the lengths a

journey of murder and decep-tion, testing the bonds of family and lover.

The evening will begin with a light dinner at 6:15 pm. Dinner is $20 per person. At 7:30 pm, Rabbi Perlstein will

lead the review and discussion. The discussion is free. Come for both or just come for the book review if you

Men’s Club

Your Men’s Club sincerely

hopes you all had a meaningful

Rosh Hashanah and Yom

Kippur. Time spent with family

is always enjoyable.

We had a great turnout at our

Candidates Forum. Brian

Fitzpatrick and Steve

Santarsiero both spoke to our

group, expressing their ideas for

the future. They also were able

to take questions from the

audience and did their best to

make us feel comfortable and

confident with them.

Our Scotch and Steak in the Sukkah was a

wonderful, success as always. Those of you who

were there enjoyed a terrific meal and great

camaraderie. This is what your club is about.

When you don’t take advantage, we all lose.

Coming up on Thursday, November 16th, is our

Annual Membership Dinner. We’re having B.J.

Schecter as a speaker. B.J. is Executive Editor for

Sports Illustrated/SI.com. He oversees college

sports and SI's investigative team, and is editor of

Campus Rush. This will be a very interesting talk

and he is a wealth of knowledge in the College

Sports arena. Bring your questions for B.J. And our

catered dinner will be excellent as always.

On Sunday, December 11th, Your Men’s Club will

be honoring Michael Zimet as our Man of the Year.

This affair is being held at Har Zion Temple in Penn

Valley. Please see our flyers and think about putting

tables together for you and your friends to honor

Mike, an integral part of the Ohev Community in

many ways. We hope to see you there.
