WHAT IS A GOOD PRESENTATION?

• A good presentation not only require thorough preparation of content, but also good style. It takes quite a bit of skill to come across understandable for any particular audience and to stay in control of the situation. For this purpose, the following 10 tips may offer some guidance to help you on the way to delivering a memorable presentation.

DO’S

•Use legible type size. Titles should be at least 36 to 40 points, bulleted text or body copy at least 24 points.

DO’S• Be brief. A good rule of thumb is to cut paragraphs down to sentences,

sentences into phrases, and phrases into keywords.• Rehearse against the clock• Practice your presentation against the clock. • Allow extra time for questions• Watch out for nerves • Take in a clock or take off your wrist watch

•"If you fail to prepare, you are prepared to fail“ so:

• Use key words to help audience focus on your message and,• Prepare!!!• Prepare!!!• Prepare!!!• Prepare!!!

DO’SEnhance readability. Don't crowd your slides. Use normal case (not all caps) and punctuate sparingly• Work out what the three messages that you want your audience to take

away• Structure your presentation around them• Use a maximum of three points on a slide• People tend to only remember three things

DO’S• You should break this down into at least three sections.

Introduction• Tell your audience what you will be talking about and why you have chosen the topic.

Main Body• For this section you need to sort through your notes, and pick the main points:• Three main points for five-minute presentations• Four main points for ten-minute presentations• Five main points for fifteen-minute presentations

DO’S• Make every word and image count. Each one should help convey

your message in the strongest possible way• Take full control of your audience,• Speak out,• You should be the main attraction not the PowerPoint,• Control your voice• Eye contact

•Limit the number of slides. A good rule of thumb is one slide per minute.

•All presentations are a type of theatre. •Tell stories and anecdotes to help illustrate points

DON'TS• Don't overuse special effects. Use sound, animation, and other effects

to emphasize major points, but don't let them become distracting.• Avoid backgrounds that are distracting or difficult to read from• Always be consistent with the background that you use

DON'TS• Don't use more than eight words per line or eight lines per slide• Don't confuse the audience with disorganized slides so that the

purpose of the presentation is not crystal clear.• Don't overwhelm your audience with busy slides. Think of that

old cliché -- "less is more".• Don't use small images or small text on your slides. Think about

those people at the back of the room.• Don't use script type fonts. They are notoriously difficult to read

at the best of times, let alone on a screen.• Don't use more than three or four related points on each slide

DON’T BE CLUELESS OR HAVE POOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT

• Don’t say you're not ready, only do it if you're only ready

• Don’t give the handout at the beginning,• Don’t read word by word,

• Don't use too many words or include non-essential information.• Don't use more than eight words per line or eight lines per slide.• You know so much about the topic!!!• no one can follow the thread of the presentation

DON'TS• Avoid hard-to-read colour combinations such as

red/green, brown/green, blue/black, blue/purple. Aim for high contrast between background

• Using a font color that does not contrast with the background color is hard to read

• Using color for decoration is distracting and annoying.• Using a different color for each point is unnecessary

• Using a different color for secondary points is also unnecessary• Trying to be creative can also be bad
