FOREWORD

w HAT child of Earth ever lived whohas not dreamed dreams of a greatand wonderful gift to be miracu-

lously bestowed 'I And generally thesedreams have included the idea of a greatfeast, of a dainty and delicious repastfar out of the ordinary. As we grow tomanhood and womanhood our longingdreams take on a more mystical characterand we try to feed them on the literalstory of a Christ-child born of Mary andlaid in a manger, a Child who shall bringto the world "Peace, good will towardmen." But, alas, we still await thatpeace, our hunger unassuaged, our giftand feast seemingly still but a dream.

In this little booklet there comes, notto those who are satisfied, but to all whostill feel the great yearning for the giftof gifts to man, who still feel the un-assuaged longing for something outsideof and greater than the outer gifts sobounteously bestowed by the Father, whofeel stirring within the Womb of theNew Age a life-force so potent, a con-

viii Forewordsciousness so inspiring that they ask:Can this be the herald of the long-promised Babe symbolized in song andstory? destined at last to fulfill allprophecies, as no babe born of humanparents has ever more than symbolized? Is this wonderful Presence to be theChild of the New Age, of whom it cantruly be said: "That holy thingshall be called the Son of God 1"

Today, as never before, a cry of heart-hunger goes up from a humanity whichhas waited so long for a real understand-ing of all that, age after age, it has ac-cepted, has striven to live for, has diedfor, yet has not fully understood or re-ceived. This great hunger-cry is not acry for physical things but is the fulfill-ment of the days so long foretold of old:"Behold, the days come, saith the LordGod, that I will send a famine in theland, not a famine of bread, nor a thirstfor water, but of hearing the words ofthe Lord."

Therefore, in response to the greatneed of Her children, the Divine Mothercomes today and finds that Her childrenhave grown up, have reached the agewhen they feel that they must put awaychildish things, can no longer be enter-tamed by or accept mere wonder-tales,but must be given the opportunity to

To all such the Divine Mother comesholding in Ijer outstretched arms the ra-diant form of Her Son, the Lord ofGlory, the fruit of Her bringing forth. With the birth of Her Son in this NewAge She brings to our remembrance allthat has been told us, all that has beenwhispered to our hearts during the darkwatches of the long night, all that theLight has revealed in the mystical depthsof our consciousness. And in Her lovingvoice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hrfrom heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to theheart-hungry and says: "Welcome tomy feast. It is spread for all who willcome and partake and live." "For thebread of God is he which cometh downfrom heaven, and giveth life to theworId."'

THE DIVINE MOTHER"The Great Mother holds out her arms to all

her children, be they Pagan, Jew. Christian ornon-Christian, recognizing that each child mustfeed at its mother', breast and partake of themilk of her love and sympathy, no matter whatthe circumstances of his or her physical life, orwhat their religious uaining."The Voice of Isu,Curtiss, 28.

"Realize Sakti as your Mother Divine; yourspirit's worshipful Queen Mother in your heartof hearts, as your inmost SelfListen to the Voiceof Salti in the temple of your heart."KalpakaMagazii,e, February 1920, 55.

"In the beginning God created the heaven andthe earth. And the earth was without form andvoid; and darkness was upon the face of thedeep. And the Spirit of God moved upon theface of the waters .. And God said, Let therebe a Srmament in the midst of the waters, andlet it divide the waters from the waters."Ge-zsesis, i: 1, 2, 6,

N the few graphic words quotedat the head of this chapter the Biblesuggests rather than describes the

beginnings of this planet, Earth. In thebeginning the heavens and the earth werenot differntiated and hence could well besymbolized by a circle, containing in itsformless void all things in potentiality. It

12 The Divine Motherwas covered with a vast darkness inwhich the future habitation of man in-cubated, much as a mother bird coversher nest, shutting out every glimmer oflight from the unborn nestlings, lest thedevelopment of the germs of life hid-den within them should be aborted. Butjust as the mother bird could not bringforth life in eggs not fertilized by thefather bird so that the inert fluids withinwere coagulated and transmuted into in.dividual forms of sentient life, neithercould the Waters of Life or the GreatDeep bring forth until it had been fructi-fied by the Spirit of God moving silentlyyet potently over the Waters of Chaos.

Out of the brooding darkness camethe firinament which divided the watersof Universal Space, or the formless voidof mere potentiality, from the special-ized Waters of Manifestation, withinwhich our globe was incubated like a cos-mic egg from which the Spirit of Godwas to be expressed within the limita-tions of the specialized forms of lifewhich were to be brought forth. Thisstage of development, be it in planet, man or hick, can be symbolized by acircle with a horizontal linethe firma-ment drawn through its center, justas the mother bird makes a firmament

separating the vastness of the world atlarge from the miniature world withinthe egg in which the coming manifesta-tion is to be segregated and secluded.

The great Divine Mother is notsomething apart from God, but a definiteand necessazy manifestation or expres-sion of God as Divine Love. It is fromthis eternal truth that all great religionshave recognized and immortalized theMother-aspect of the Divine as co-equalwith the Father-aspect, altho amongChristians the Catholic Church is theonly one which emphasizes or gives muchattention to it, and then only as thematerialized and limited human motherof the personalized man, Jesus. "Thuswe have Mary, the mother of Jesus;Myrrha, mother of Bacchus; Mair, mother of Hermes; Maya Maria, motherof the Siamese Savior, Sommona Cadom;Myrrha, mother of the Greek Adonis;Maya, mother of Agni; Maya, motherof Buddha; Miriam, the prophetess.mother of Israel; Mizram, mother ofJoshua; Minerva, the Virgin Queen,'*and so forth.

In various philosophies there are manyother names for the Divine Mother whichindicate some of her attributes, such asthe "Mother of Mercy and Knowledge,"() The Xe7 of De,ti*y, C5rtju, £45.

Page 18: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

14 The Divine Mother"the Mother (fire), the Wife (water),and the Daughter (air) of the Logos";Shakti, the energy of the Essence of theFather, Son and Holy Ghost. "It isalso called Mulaprakriti (the root ofNature), also Electricity, both seen andunrevealed." She is also called "theDivine Voice"; "God spake the Wordand we were made." She is also called"Akasha, the synthesis of all the forcesof Nature and of all the magic potenciesof Occult Sound in Nature and inEther:' the gentle cooing or chirping ofthe mother bird calling to her young;also that which we call the SoundlessSound, the inarticulate sound or voiceof the bursting bud, the growing grain, the whisper of unseen waters.

Back of all such universal myths andallegories there must be and is a divinetruth, for truth is sensed by all sincereaspirants who seek to penetrate into themysteries of life. Hence, all who seekof God for ultimate truth, find thisMother.aspect revealed to them person.ally and also expressed in various waysin all religions. Therefore, let us alsostrive to realize the truth back of thisuniversal idea.

We are told that "God is love" andlove is the feminine attribute or expression of God through which all things

Tile Divine Mother iSare brought forth. "The Mother ofhumanity is that mighty Passive Prin-ciple which gathers up the Light as itpenetrates Chaos and cherishes it in herbosom. It is forever the tender, brood-ing Mother-force which works on thegerms of good in all things that theymay ultimately bring forth that good.It is that unseen Mother-love of theGodhead hovering like a dove over itsnestling, which feeds with "food con-venient for us" every hungry heart, evenif that food be seemingly bitter to thetaste; that unseen agency which, whenthe fury of the tempest has spent itselfand the Sun shines forth, brings out itspurifying effects."*

It is the Water of Life poured forthby the Man or Water-bearer in the SignAquarius. this sign thus typifying thedual aspect of creation: God the Father(the Man) wills to pour forth the GreatCreative Force as Love (water) whichbecomes the Mother of all things, andwhich brings forth in man the Son orthe Light of the Christ-consciousness,that Light "which lighteth every manthat cometh into the world"; that mysticLight which makes both life and lovemanifest definitely. All life manifests asLight, hence on Earth all living things

16 The Divine Mothergive forth a form of light-rays (radio-activity) or have an aura which willaffect a properly prepared phòtographicplate. -

The Divine Mother is the BringerForth and Sustainer of the universe, theComforter whom Jesus promised to leavewith us, "even unto the end:' that itmight bring all things to our remem-brance whatsoever He has told us. Foronly as the Divine Mother comforts Herchildren and brings to their remembrancethe realization of their essential divinityas "Sons of God and heirs to His king-dom"; brings joy out of sorrow andwisdom out of error, can She bring forthin them the perfect expression of theirReal (Divine) Selves.

Among the Hindus one aspect of theDivine Mother is recognized under thename of Sakti. "Realize Sakti as yourMother Divine. . . . A student ofKayasiddhi lives in Sakti, moves in Saktiand has his being in Sakti. . . . Thestudent feels that he is always and for.ever in the presence of Sakti. . .That he can cause Sakti to feel him, lovehim, seek him, want him, find him. . .Sakti is everywhere. Simply let Saktihave her way. Do not resist. Let notyour doubt or despair or lack of faithstand between you and Sakti. . .

The Divine Mother 17

Live in the thought that Sakti loves youthe Universal One from whom are allforces and all things."*

In the first chapter of Genesis we readthat at first: "God greated man in hisown image, in the image of God createdhe him; male and female created hethem"i. e., androgynous. And it wasonly far later in evolution, when "theheavens and the earth were finished, andall the host of them," that this spiritualRace descended into physical embodimentin the second symbolic Adam made ofthe dust of the Earth. Then a deepsleep (the night period between theRaces)* overtook the consciousness ofthat divine androgynous, ethereal andsemi-astral Race, during which, comingunder the Law of Duality which rulesall physical manifestation, the PassivePrinciple or Love-nature was individual-ized and separated as a rib and embodiedas Eve, the first physical mother.

Thus at the dawn of the next greatstage of evolution the male and femaleaspects of the Spiritual Man foundthemselves separated, yet working to-gether to express the whole; the mas-culine aspect as will, logic, courage, pro-

18 The Divine Motherjective, fructifying consciousness andphysical power; the feminine aspect asthe brooding love1 tenderness1 compas-sion, spiritual power and the ability tobring forth and nourish that which hasbeen fructified.

And only by the perfect union of thesetwo Principles can "the Christ be bornin you." Like St. Paul, we must alltravail in the birth pangs, together withall creation, until this divine spiritualbirth takes place. first within us individ-ually, then in all humanity. It is there-fore this feminine aspect of the Godhead, the Divine Mother-aspect and its powerto bring forth in us, which we will con-sider in this little volume.

It is said by some that "God thoughtand his thoughts brought forth the urn-verse." But this is only a half truth, for only as thought is united with andvitalized by emotion can it bring forththe idea into manifestation. Also, everyvital thought brings forth a thrill ofemotion. Hence, God's thought, unitedto Divine Love, which gave it the powerto manifest, filled all space and broughtforth after the pattern of the idealprojected from the Divine Mind.

Again, we are often told that Godbreathed out from His own Being allthe manifested worlds. This is also

Page 23: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

The Divine Mother 19

true, for the breath contains both theFather and Mother-forces, heat andmoisture. Hence, that Divine Breath, containing the all-embracing Love, bringsforth the universe in perfection, har-mony and beauty, embodying within iteverything needed for the evolution, comfort, health and happiness of the asyet unborn races of men.

If this realization could be broughtmore fully to our consciousness and, in-stead of merely breathing automaticallyto sustain life like the animals, we men-tally invoked and correlated with theDivine Mother-force through the breath,we could bring forth according to ourpurified will. It is therefore importantthat the breath be kept pure and sweet. It is the purifier of the body as well asthe sustainer of life; hence, if we per-mit it to be ovei-laden with an excessof bodily impurities it wiff hinder ourcorrelation with the Divine Mother.

In Nature we often see an excess ofeither heat (masculine) or moisture(feminine), either of which retardgrowth. But then comes the wind(breath of heaven) as an equalizer be-tween them. It blows gently or fiercelyaccording to conditions, one of its func-tions being to equalize the heat andmoisture as well as sweep away all foul-

Page 24: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

20 The Divine Moiherodors. In man the breath has the samefunction of equalization. As a result ofconditions which he has set up throughhis ignorance of and indifference to theDivine Law, the wind often becomes theagent of karmic equalization and adjust-mentthrough storms and other destruc-tive conditionson Earth. But alwaysthe Divine Mother covers up the scarsand renews the devastated regions with amantle of verdure.

Just so the breath in man, because ofhis ignorance and indifference to thelove of the Divine Mother, becomes pol-luted and hence brings inharmony in-stead of equalization to his body. Thusit becomes to man an agent of karmicreadjustment through storms of sickness, poverty and unhappiness.

In each human being, as in each seed, the Father-Motherheat and moisturemust be absorbed and united if growthis to take place. Undeveloped man usesthese forces, like a seed dropped by thewayside, in a haphazard way, but if,through understanding, he unites the twoscientifically, he brings forth like a highlycultivated seed that is protected, fertilizedand cared for. The moisture-aspect ofthe Divine Mother will bring forth thatLove in man, if he will but receive it,

by which he can be led to the Wisdomof the Father.

Only the feminine aspect of God-consciousness could have expressed somuch tender beauty and delicate charm,so much harmony and melody, or couldhave stored up in the bowels of theearth, in the depths of the sea and theheights of the air such boundless storesof health, wealth and happiness.

Only the foresight of Divine Mother-love could have filled the air with vital-ity to sustain life, and implanted in theminerals of the earth aud the herbs of thefield the differentiated life-essenceswhich, when properly used under the lawof sympathy or affinity, would restoreharmony to every inharmony, health toevery illness, and meet the needs of everydisability which man, during his child-hood of ignorance, was apt to bring uponhimself.

A purely masculine aspect of conscious.ness we could readily think of as saying:"I have made all things perfect in formand function; have given to man theability to correlate with the currents oflife and health and wisdom and pros-perity. Why, then, should I prepare inadvance an antidote for his self-inflictedills I Let him learn to obey the law."

But the great love-aspect, the Divine

Page 26: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

22 The Divine MotherMother, realizing the results of man'schildish ignorance and selfishness, pre-pared beforehand a balm for every ill,a lullaby for every sorrow, a comfortfor every grief, and implanted in everyheart an inner urge to respond to HerLove; to realize the tender watchful carethat would not that any suffer; the in-born certainty in every heart that thereis a way out of every difficulty, and adetermination to find that way.

This Eternal Urge in each heart toreturn to its Divine Source, no matterhow deeply sunk in matter or how lostin the darkness of ignorance, is broughtforth by the surge of the mighty streamof Divine Love ever flowing back to itsSource, carrying all its children with it.

All attraction and cohesion is a mani-festation of Divine Lovethe affinity ofthe protons and electrons which composethe atoms, the chemical attraction of theatoms which compose the molecules ofmatter, as well as the attraction that holdsthe planets in their orbits around theSun, and the attraction that unites theindividual Soul to God and draws it everupward.

Love is also a master vibration. Henceonly as that vibration Bows through andfinds expression in the various forms oflife can their atoms hold together and

Page 27: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

manifest these forms; only as it flowsthrough us can there be any real life inus. It is also harmony and rhythm.Hence only as we allow the currents ofDivine Love to flow through us unim-peded and unresisted can we manifestharmony in our bodies or minds. Thisis the secret of both health and peace.

"Sakti (the Divine Mother) is in me;Sakti is in the universe, says the Mantra-Yogi. He simply lets Her work anddoes not stand between Herself and theWork. . . . 'Hers is the workI ambut a tool in Her all-powerful hands.'

Identifying himself by devotionand self-surrender with the SupremeSakti, the Mantra-Yogi gives the com-mand, couched in affirmative Mantra, and lets the Sakti in him work out theresult."*

The process is not complicated, sim-ply "grow as the flower grows," open-ing its heart to the warmth of theSun and drinking in the dew of heaven.Complications seem to arise only whenwe strive to analyze and understand thedetails of the workings of the Law. Itis a simple act to breathe, but a compli-cated act to understand, for to do so wemust know the chemistry of the air and

() The Kaipaha Magazise, May 19w, 176.() Romans, ,iii. 22-3.

Page 28: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

24 The Divine Motherthe blood, as well as the complicatedphysiology and anatomy of respirationand circulation. But we can breathe andmaintain perfect health without thattechnical knowledge. Just so we cancorrelate with the Divine Motherthrough love and learn to know Godwithout a knowledge of the details ofthe process.

If we react to and express the lowervibrations which resist and counteractand shut out Love, such as anger, hatred, jealousy, resentment, revenge, envy, criti-cism, etc., the vibrations of harmony can-not manifest and hold the atoms togetherin rhythm, and our bodily functions aredisturbed and illness or disease (inhar-mony) results. But since man is the"microcosm of the macrocosm" he canconsciously correlate with the DivineMother in thought and emotion andthrough love bring forth and manifestin his cnosciousness and in his very fleshthe fruit of that perfect harmony whichis his birthright.

"For God so loved the world, that hegave his, only begotten Son, that whoso-ever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life." The "onlybegotten Son" is the Cosmic Christ-principle or the One Divine Life-force,the Sun-force in Nature and the Son-

The Divine Mother 25

force in man. Only as we let the love ofthe Divine Mother surround, fill andmanifest through us can we establish thestate of harmony in which the Christ-life and consciousness can be born in us.

The great Master Jesus lived andmoved and had his Being in this greatstream of Divine Love and thus becamea Christ as an example to us of how wealso may have that same Christ-life andconsciousness born in us. Jesus was the"first fruits" or culmination or perfectmanifestation of this outpouring of thecreative 'Will and Love (Father-Mother),and was the exemplar of the laws thatmust be followed and the attainmentthat must be reached by all mankind indue season before it can become one withits Father-Mother or reach the At-one-ment.

We can gain a new conception of thestate of harmony we must ultimatelymanifest to reach this attainment if wedivide the word atonement thus, a-tone-ment; that is, the tone that is meant tomanifest; that key-note of Divine Har-mony which is now being manifested byour Higher Self and which is striving tomake us respond to and express it onEarth in our consciousness and thereforein our flesh.

If we sing out of tune the inharmony

Page 30: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

26 The Divine Mothermay become so great that it may produceactual pain or even illness in a highlysensitive nature. Our bodies were orig-inally set to music, "the music of thespheres," or the crooning of the DivineMother, and we should and ultimatelymust express the theme in harmony. Ournormal heart-beat gives us the measureand our breath must accord with itsrhythm if we are to correlate consciouslywith the Great Love which gave us indi-viduality and brought us forth, andwhich will ultimately bring us to per.fection and at-one-ment. And since manis made in the image of God, both Di-vine Will and Divine Love can use thebreath to bring forth, not only health ofbody and mind, but also oneness with ourDivine Self, which is always attuned toDivine Harmony or God.

Another symbol of "the Power of theHighest and the Holy Ghost," whichovershadowed Mary that the Christmight manifest is the Dove which de-scended upon the head of Jesus at Hisbaptism, and the Voice which pro-claimed the word: "This is my belovedSon in whom I am well pleased." Henceour Divine Parents are well pleased whenthe Christ-consciousness is born in us,after we have become so purified andharmonized that Divine Love can find a

The Divine Mother 27

resting place on our heads and the Di-vine Wisdom has entered into our con-sciousness, and the Voice can speak tous within; just as an inventor i3 wellpleased when he has perfected the mech-anism of his invention and finds that itwill run or respond to his guidance.

All creation is an expression of the Sonor the progeny of the great creativestream of Divine Love and Will. Hence,as St. Paul tells us: "The whole creationgroaneth and travaileth in pain togetheruntil now. And not only they but our-selves also, which have the firstfruits ofthe Spirit, even we ourselves groanwithin ourselves, waiting for the adop-tionto-wit, the redemption of ourbody."*

In other words, all Nature groans andtravails in unrest until harmony and per-fection are manifested, and we groan andtravail in unrest until the Christ-life andconsciousness finds expression through usand literally redeems our body. For un-til man, by correlating with the DivineMother, has brought forth the Christ inits fullness in the Race there can be norest in Nature, for its highest and crown-ing creation (man) is incomplete.

Therefore, since we have back of usthe mighty urgc of all evolution toward

28 The Divine Motherperfection, we must ultimately conquer. But if we knowingly strive to respondto the Love of the Divine Mother wecan bring forth "that holy thing" whichis the Christ far more quickly than whenmerely floating on the sluggish currentof physical evolution, and can accom-plish this new birth without having topass through the suffering which igno-rance and failure to work in harmonywith the Divine Law necessarily entails.

MIDNIGHT PRAYERThis prayer has a dual purpose, both

to bring comfort and peace whenever in-harmony or discouragement assail us, andespecially to use at night when the forcesof the Sun have been withdrawn andthe astral forces are sweeping closestand having greatest power on Earth, aswell as whenever we are wakeful, rest-less or apprehensive. Take a fewrhythmic breaths* - say seven - untilcalmed and quieted, and then repeat theprayer. If circumstances will permit, re-peat this prayer aloud, thus voicing theconsciousness and aiding us to realize thepresence and the power of the DivineMother.

N all religions we have Godthe'Absolute, the Causeless Cause, thegreat Source of allrepresented as

a Trinity: God-the-Father (DivineWill) God-the-Mother (Divine Love),and God-the-Son (Divine Life or theCosmic Christ-force), This Trinity mani-fests in Nature as in man: God-the-Father as the formative and individualiz-ing Consciousness which projects the idealor pattern of that which is to manifest, the pattern within the seed, within the

egg and within man. As a Son of Godman uses this Father-force as the formu-lating and projecting pòwer of will andthought.

God-the-Mother manifests in Natureas that which nourishes the seed; whichbrings to it all the ingredients necessaryfor it to unfold, bring forth and mani-fest the ideal or pattern implanted byGod-the-Father. In man it feeds himwith spiritual manna, nourishes all theseeds or qualities of good now lyingdormant under the snows of "the winterof our discontent"even while destroy-ing in the fire of suffering all falsegrowth brought forth because he turnedaway from the Sun of Righteousnessthat ultimately man may bring forth andexpress all his God-qualities and powersuntil he truly manifests as a Son of God.It also manifests as that undying hopewhich ever rises Phoenix-like from theashes of discouragement.

As God-the-Son is the result of theinteraction of the Father-Mother-forces,in Nature we see it manifest as theDivine Life-force, the power back ofthe law of growth, which gathers up thenourishing materials furnished by theDivine Mother and builds them into, andthus makes manifest, the pattern project-ed by the Father. In man it is that inner

Page 36: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

32 The Divine Motherurge toward perfection; that conscious-ness which ultimately grasps the lessonsfrom the experiences of life and buildsthem into Soul-growth, that the RealSelf may ultimately manifest. It is thatintelligence which enables man to workunderstandingly, once he has trulylearned the lessons the experiences weremeant to teach, in co-operation with hisDivine Parents and consciously becomeTheir representative in the manifestedworlds.

The Sepher Yeizirah or "Book ofFormation," considered to be the oldestphilosophical treatise extant in the He-brew language, teaches the existence ofa single Divine Power (God) whichmanifests in variety and multiplicity, yetcreating Unity and Harmony. TheMother-aspect of this one Divine Poweris represented as a trinity by the threeletters, Aleph, Mem and Shin, said tocorrespond to air, fire and water. Theheavens or firmament, it states, was pro-duced from firei. e., the Mother.aspectmanifesting as the essence of Divine Lifeand Love, the warmth of Divine Love, the brooding of the mother bird on hernest. The earth, it says, was broughtforth from water, the Mother.aspect, asthe Waters of Life in which all thingsgerminate. In our simile of the bird, the

Earth would correspond to the solid sub-stance of the incubating eggs evolved bythe coagulating and transformation ofthe fluids of the eggs. The Spirit is saidto come forth from air "as a reconcilerbetween them"i. e., only the Spirit ofDivinity can "reconcile" or synthesizeearth, fire and water and produce warm, moist earth in which all the seeds orgerms of life planted therein can bringforth.

Again, the Divine Mother-force of at-traction is expressed as the trinity; heat, electricity and magnetism, or the warmthof ardent love, which is peace, harmonyand cohesion; electricityof which man-kind today knows only the outer mani-festationthe purging, cleansing andpurifying aspect; and magnetism, which isvitality, the attracting, bringing forthand nourishing aspect of the DivineMother. These three aspects are one,yet without their differentiation all mani-festations of life and form would cease.

The understanding of the DivineMother-force, as God bringing forth inmanifestation on this plane through Love,is one of the great mysteries of God.But Jesus tells His discipleswho in-clude all those who are sincerely tryingto follow the Christ-life"Unto you(those who jiave correlattd with and have

Page 38: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

34 The Divine Motherforsaken all to follow Him) it is givento know the mysteries of the kingdomof God." Now, if it is given us to knowthese mysteries, it is not only possible tograsp and understand them, but there issome definite way of arriving at a solu-tion of their meaning now so seeminglyincomprehensible. Moreover, it is ourduty to make the effort to understand, for unto us it is given as a task to beperformed as His disciples. This definiteway is an effort, through aspiration andself.surrender, to merge our personalconsciousness and understanding into theocean of Divine Love which surroundsus, ever striving to fill us and bear uson to oneness with God. It is throughDivine Love that we must open the doorthrough which Divine Wisdom can flow.

To truly learn of God we must studythe great book of Nature which God hasprepared for us. Aitho this bookmay be sealed to the understanding ofthe profane, it is open wide to all whoapproach it in reverent obedience to theguiding hand of the Divine Mother. And in it, if we realize that the samelife-force we see animating Nature isalso animating us, we will find thatevery problem is worked out. Solomontells us: "Go to the ant, thou sluggard.-Consider her ways and be wise." We

are also told to consider the lilies ofthe field, how they grow, for by thesame nourishing Love-force of the Di-vine Mother, out of the mire of earth-conditions, we too hsall bring forthafter our Divine Prototype or pattern, and blossom and reach our perfection, even as do the lilies.

If God so clothed the grass of the fieldin beauty, vitality and health, and sup-plied it with everything needed to makeits life expression complete, have we nota right to expect that we, His children, the crowning point of manifested crea-tion, shallif we respond to and followthe same Lawfind a universal supplyfor all our needs I Shall we not beclothed in beauty and perfection of ex-pression surpassing as far that of the lilyor the rose as man surpasses them in thescale of evolution? Shall we not benourished and fed and abundantly sup- -

plied with all that goes to make life acontinuous expression of peace, harmony, abundance and joy, even as are the lilyand the rose, reflecting God's image inbeauty, health and usefulness to the sameextent that man exceeds the usefulness ofthe grass of the field I

The bringing forth of this perfectedmanifestation is the work of the DivineMother-heart, for the heart of the

36 The Divine MotherMother is the Heart of the World. Onlythat which is true can abide there. Allthat is inharmonious, false or impure, having been brought forth not by Her,but by man's misuse of his God-givenpowers and materials, must be cast out,for the source of attraction cannot cone-late with it, hence throws it out throughthe force of selection or repulsion.

Therefore, if we make false affirma-tions; if we claim that we are now mani-festing the force of Eternal Life as per-fect health and we have not yet reachedthat consciousness, or if we are workingout the Karma of a body abused in apast life, or if we are not dwelling inlove and correlating with the DivineMother who nourishes us, we are assert-ing that which is not true, hence cannotbring it forth; for we are building on afalse foundation, and every stone that isfalse, by the very vibrations of DivineLove, must be disintegrated and forcedout of our structure.

If we make great claims as to mani-festing youth, health, perfect eyesight, etc., without being able to let that con-sciousness manifest through us and haveto go to all sorts of subterfuges to makeour fellow men think we are expressingand demonstrating these things when weare not, since the vibrations of the Great

Love arc steady and true and God cannotbe mocked, all these things which weclaim falsely must be cast out, that wemay begin over again and build trueand square.

We may have to age swiftly, experi-ence illness and even die at an age whenlife should be surging through us abund-antly. Or we may have to lose what eye-sight we have that we may learn the les-son of striving for and attaining theconsciousness of these things before weclaim to possess them. As well mightwe claim to possess a gold mine or anoil well when we have only a mere"prospect?'

While we are striving and seeking thetrue realization, the great merciful Law,like a tender mother, has provided uswith many physical helps to shorten asmuch as 0!sible the period needed forour schooling and to mitigate the un-happy results of our lack of realization. Thus our Divine Mother has providedfor our period of ignorance, and if, likeprecocious children, we turn away fromher gifts and refuse to use the physicalhelps she has provided while we arelearning to unfold and manifest ourhigher realization of the perfection ofthe Real Self, we are like foolish chil-dren who refuse to have their baby teeth

38 The Divine Motherremoved that the permanent ones maygrow straight and in perfection, and wemust abide by the consequences until welearn our lesson.

Many today are cl2iming to possess thesecret of perpetual life and eternal youth, yet those who stand by and watch theresults are apt to say, Why do not suchdemonstrate their claims They onlytoo often look haggard and old or nega-tive and depleted. They make strenuousdenials of physical ailments, yet they aregrowing hollow-eyed, wrinkled and life-less in the effort to ignore conditionswhich should Ie recognized and reme-died. They declare the absolute powerof thought and claim that to use anyphysical helps, even, to wear eye-glasses,is a lack of faith, yet they either showsad marks of poor eyesight or carrymagnifying glasses to be used in private.

When Jesus was asked to heal the manwho was born blind, He was asked:"Who bath sinned, this man or his pa-rents that he was born blind r If twas the man himself who had sinned be-fore his birth it must have been in aprevious incarnation, and as like alwayscreates like, what more probable thanthat the "sin" which resulted in his be-ing born blind might not have been the

abuse of his eyes and a refusal to takeproper care of them in that life?

How sad it would be if many of ourwell-meaning but over-eager friends whotoday are insisting upon doing withoutproper glasses before they have takenproper and scientilic exercises to improvethe sight, lest they be considered as"failing to demonstrate" perfect vision, and who are using their imperfect eyeswithout such physical helps or properexercises when their eyes are unable toendure the strain, how sad it would beif some of them were to be born blindin their next incarnation to teach themnot to refuse any of the helps towardperfection provided for them, when thatlesson should have been learned here andnow! Yet the parable plainly showsthat even in such an event the currentsof the Christ-life will ultimately extractfrom the experiences the new conceptionsand ideas which will perfect and healus, "that the glory of God should bemade manifest."

As we enter this new Aquarian orWoman's Age, in which the downpour-ing of the Love of the Divine Motheris increasingly recognized, science, whichhas so long been looked upon as antag-onistic to religion, has already demon-strated the possibility of attaining perfect

40 The Divine Mothervision in spite of to-called structuraldefects of the eye.* And it is makingremarkable strides in other branches ofhealing, even tho such steps are buttemporary means to help the masses un-til they can respond to true spiritualhealing. Yet these helps are far in ad-vance of old-time medication. The wiseand loving children of the Divine Motherwill, therefore, take all the gifts sheholds out, knowing that the end of thejourney is reached only by taking onestep after the other with a thankful heartfor all the blessings received along theway. We see in all these things the handof the Divine Mother guiding us, forShe does not say to the tree, "Demon-strate to me thy perfect fruit," while thetree is still but a sapling. For shoulda horticultural magician wave his wandand cause the immature sapling to bringfoith fruit, the fruit would be ephemeraland the tree would soon wither and die.

As our Divine Mother is ever eager togather her children into Her arms andteach them whenever they are willingto learn from Her, know well that allwho are earnestly seeking the true solu-tion of life's problems of health, happi-ness and abundance, shall find it whenthey are prepared to receive it because1) Perfect Sight Withoit Glasses. they have learned their lessons. Among the Egyptians the goddess Isispersonified the Divine Mother, as Marydoes with us today. Her very namemeans that which forever Is Is, not wasor will be, but Is. "Isis as bride andmother (also as daughter), is anothermystery symbolizing the Great Mother-principle in Nature and in man, whichmust be espoused by the Sun Initiate. Inits mother aspect it gives man his spirit-ual birth and later, when man has madethe higher correlation with it. it becomeshis bride, the power through which heis able to put together, synthesize andbring forth as a god."5 The old myth ofIsis seeking and finding the body ofOsiris, or the Father-aspect, broken infourteen pieces,5 and uniting them intoone body represents the work that theGreat Mother is forever doing. 42 The Divine Motherto Earth man breaks it up into many so-called loves.

Thus we speak of conjugal love, filiallove, brotherly love, love of country, ofhome, of power, of self, etc., etc., speak-ing as tho each were a separate thing. But when we once sense the meaning ofthe Divine Mother and even for a mo-ment are transported by the thrill of thatdivine ecstasy, or enter into a realizationof Divine Love, all those seemingly sep-arated pieces of the body of our Lord(manifestations of the Law) are unitedand we at once know that "God is Love"and that that Love fills the universe, isuniversal life and forever Is.

As long as man fails to realize thisgreatest of all truths he must continueto fail and die, for he refuses to believein Her Son and so turns away from thestream of Divine Life. Hence he mustgo back into the unseen world where, un-hampered by the density of Earth condi-tions, be can catch a glimpse of the Di-vine Mother and recognize Her Son asthe Light of all life.

Such a person is like a child who hasgrown up, and having gone out into theworld, repudiates the mother who borehim. For we are all spiritually born ofthe Mother-aspect of God, the stream ofDivine Love. And our only real spirit-

The Bringer Forth 43

nal sustenance comes from feeding on itas it flows forth to us and to the wholeuniverse.

Hence without Love there is no im-mortal life in us. We can only live outand exhaust the little store of life-forcewhich the Divine Mother gave us atbirth to carry us through this brief spanof physical life. And when this is ex-hausted, if we fail to draw on the ex-haustless supply we grow old and grad-ually pass away from this expression oflife; for it would be cruelty to permitman to demonstrate immortality in theflesh without love. He would grow tobe a monster of misery and hopelessdespair, like the Wandering Jew. Butthe arms of the Divine Mother are heldout and She, is calling us back to Herbosom that once more She may suckleus at Her breast and fill us with a greaterrealization of Immortal Life. Then weare again sent forth to demonstrate ournew lesson, wrapped round with DivineLove.

Therefore, what we call death is oftena blessing, for it enables us to return tothe arms of the Divine Mother moreconsciously, to be held close to Her heartand have new life poured into us. Thisis a most necessary process for the con-turned evolution of humanity. For, since

Page 48: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

44 The Divine Motherthe majority of manlrind can only realizethis Divine Love as a babe does itsmother's love and as a babe assimilates it,and has not yet reached the developmentand mental enlightenment necessary tounderstand it, therefore it must be asbabes that we are sent back to the lifeof physical existence with but a vague, haunting memory of a something won-derfully Divine which we have left, and of something almost unattainablewhich we must strive for, and an urgewhich will not let us rest until, even inour physical consciousness, we touch thehem of the robe of Her Son and feelthe radiant Divine Life-force flowthrough us. But there will come a daywhen we shall "awake in his image" andshall be satisfied, not' in some futureafter-death world, but here in this; theday when we become one with the Father-Mother. This condition once reached,we can live in consciousness in all theworlds, even as our Father-Mother fillsall space.

Hence, whenever we call upon the Di-vine Mother we feel Her presence andknow that She is near; that She has al-ways been near, enveloping us with herDivine Love. It is this great Lovewhich is contacted and tapped throughprayers to the Divine Mother, whether

The Bringer Forth 45under the name of the Virgin Mary, Isisor Sakti. It is only we who have turnedour backs upon Light, Love and Life. The riddle of the Sphinx is, "Man,Whence ð Why Whither r And onlythrough Divine Love can it be answered.

Humanity as a whole is only just nowstepping into its spiritual adolescence, and the Aquarian Age (Man, the WaterBearer) marks a most important era inhuman evolution. In former Ages wewere but babes in spiritual unfoldment, crude, cruel and unresponsive to our Di-vine Mother. We worshipped God-the-Father in the ignorance and pride of self.esteem, making of Him a supreme imageof all that man in his selfish egotismpostulated as the highest of man's at-tainments. We placed Him in a materialheaven and cringed before Him withfear and trembling like slaves instead ofSons. Only the masculine was consid-ered. Only the masculine side of hu.Inanity dictated the methods of His wor-ship and approach, while woman wasignored or despised, like a stream of liv-ing water poured out upon a rock whilethe thirsty earth cried out for moisture, even St. Paul saying: "Let your womenkeep silence in the churches. . . . Forthe man is not of the woman; but thewoman of the man. Neither was the

46 The Divine Motherman created for the woman; but thewoman for the man."5 This, however, but proves what we have said about trueinspiration45.i. e., that it is not given inwords, but breathed in by the Spirit.Hence, man's preconceived ideas andtrend of thought and the commonly ac-cepted ideas of his time influence hisinterpretation of the spiritual veritieswhich he has sensed through inspiration,as is so evidently the case with St. Paulin his attitude toward women.

Humanity was much like a family ofbig, healthy boys, whose mother hadpassed away while they were infants andwho were brought up entirely by theirfather and elder brother, who left themmuch to themselves. Yet all the timetheir Mother was watching over themand trying to influence them from onhigh, seeking in many ways to impressand guide them into the gentle arts sonecessary for their complete education.

Hence often in dreams the boys wouldget a glimpse of their mother and theirhearts would be stirred. But she seemedso far away, so unreal, that many ofthem could not understand that theirdream had any practical bearing on theirdaily life, hence ridiculed, even perse-

cuted, those whose realization was greaterand who believed in their mother andsought to commune with her. Like theunseeing boys, humanity must awakento the reality of its Divine Mother andseek to commune with Her.

Man has eaten of the Tree of theKnowledge of Good and Evil, but theTree of Immortal Life is still guardedby the Angel with the Flaming Sword. For the Tree of Life can never yield itsfruit to man until he has turned backto the Mother who bore him and haspermitted Divine Love to interpret lifefor him.

The dawn of the New Age is upon us,yet many there be who are strugglingwith the sleep of the ages, still tryingto live and accomplish in their ownstrength. How important, therefore, for us who sincerely desire to help hu-manity onward and upward to seek outthe Divine Mother and let Her greatLove fill, surround and cover us; to knowHer as the Brinçerforth of our life.Only Love, unsullied by earthly miscon-ceptions, can bring all things to our re-membrance. For we do not so muchlearn new lessons as have brought toour remembrance the lessons given usby our Divine Mother. We touch thesource of all wisdom when we recog-

48 The Divine Mothernize correlate with and dwell in DivineLove.

Many ask, "How can I live in lovewhen so many people are inharmoniousor perhaps antagonistic to me, and themore I strive to love everyone the moreinharmony I create in my life? Suchpersons but reiterate the old question:"If I love not my brother whom I haveseen, how can I love God whom I havenot seen 'I" Yet there must be a way: itis this: begin by meditating on all thatthe Divine Mother is and means to you,and literally dwelling in that GreatLove. Then realize how far all humanityhas departed from it, how far you your-self have fallen short. Every time youwalk out in Nature, observe the wondersof God and think how much Divine Lovethey express. If you see a withered leaf,a deformed tree or insect-infestedgrowths, realize that they are all theresult of man's wrong uses of his pow-ers, by the misuse of which he has inter-fered with the harmonious manifestationof Divine Love.

If we would dwell close to our highestconception of Divine Love, even when ourhearts are wrung by the cruel misunder-standing of earthly friends, let us lift ourhands in invocation to the Divine Motherand nestle close to Her bosom until we

Page 53: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

feel the rhythmic beat of Her heart andare stilled and soothed; for She alonecan enable us to realize that all thatbrings us closer to Her heart has ulti.inately worked for good. Hence if allthe misunderstanding, ingratitude andsorrow caused by our friends has taughtus to turn from the outer seeming to theinner Reality for comfort, to see ourfaults and our own need of forgivenessand to do our own work the better, whileit was not good in itself and should nothave been needed by us, still it has beenturned into a blessing. For only as wecome to the realization that those whomwe dislike are also pupils of the oneGreat Teacher, children of the one Di-vine Mother, and that they have notreally harmed us, but have only in ameasure delayed Her more perfectmanifestation, only then are we readyfor the real consecration of all we haveand are and hope to be to the spreadof Divine Love in humanity.

And with this realization there willalso be brought home to us the realiza-tion that as long as we let our mindsdwell on that which is inharmonious oron those personalities who arc inhar-monious with us, even if it beas wemay thinkbut to forgive them and wishthem well, our very thinking of them is

SO The Divine Motherbut adding to the thought of inharmonyintensifying it and tending to stir upstrife; for that which we meditate uponor entertain in our minds we give powerto. It is not imperfect personalities thatwe are to love, but the Real Self or Soulof all men and to do this we do not neces-sarily need to associate with inharmoni-ous personalities.

If we have truly correlated with andrealized the Love of the Divine Motherwe will no longer assume a self-righteous attitude and condescendinglyforgive our enemies, fiut will simplystrive to let our Light and our new-found realization of Love shine forth, that Light and Love which radiate fromus when we strive to live in DivineLove, and let them accomplish their ownmission.

Realizing that our hands constitute amarvelous apparatus as specially de-signed to enable us to accomplish "thewill of Him that sent me," if we wishto consecrate our powers to help the Di-vine Mother spread Her Love to hu-manity, we must recognize our hands aspotent factors in this accomplishment. To make the correlation and consecrateour hands the following practical exer-cise may be used, If we wish to receivethis force face due East; if we wish to

While we speak of Mother Earth, itshould be remembered that she is themother of our physical body only, whilethe Water of Life is the Divine Motherof our spiritual expressiop. We find thisinvisible downpounng of the Water ofLife like liquid fire when it meets resist-ance or when poured upon those who arenot ready to receive its baptism. How

- .this great Mother-force, poured out fromthe Mother.aspect of the Godhead, clarifies destroys and consumes! Yet asit begins to descend it is almost likedew from heaven. It falls upon theplanet and upon the frightful horrors ofman's wickedness like a benison of peace.Even in the midst of battle it lifts upthe hearts of men to a realization thatthere is some great purpose back of itall, something more than human, some-thing Divine. And upon the faces of thedying it stomps a smile of joy, as if theeyes have beholden unutterable things, things of glory unspeakable.

This awakening is not the mere awak-cuing of the consciousness of mankindbecause it has suffered so intensely. Itis a far greater awakening. It is theresult of the pouring out upon mankindof the Water of Life. It is thebaptism of the New Age poured out upon

56 The Divine Motherthe whole world, upon the quick and thedead, upon the Elect and upon thosewho are still unenlightened and unre-pentant. How much more will it bepoured out upon those who seek to fol-low the Law, who have dedicated theirlives to the Divine, who have cried outfrom the depths of their hearts: "0,Almighty Power! Give us that Divinerealization, that cleansing baptism! Letus see Thy bright shining! Let oureyes behold Thee through the clouds ofblack darkness!" And the answer is,"Verily, verily, I say unto you, those ofyou who arc standing fast; those of youwho have consecrated your lives as sal-diem of the Christ, who have stood inthe darkness without wavering or losingfaith: Behold! for you the Day Star isrising. Behold! for you the great con-stellation Aquarius, the Man who holdsaloft the ewer of the Great Mother, ispouring out the Waters of Life thatyou may be baptized with the HolyGhost and with fire. As was promised bythe prophet of the past age, 'I, indeed, baptize thee with water unto repentance:but he that cometh after is mightier thanI . . . he shall baptize you with theHoly Ghost, and with fire.'"

After the devastating great flood, inwhich only those who entered the Ark

of Safety in obedience to the word ofthe Lord were saved, after the old Karmahad been washed away and the world pre-pared for its next great stage of develop-ment, water became to the earth its chiefblessing. It so enriched the earth thatit brought forth far more abundantly forman. Yet man accepted all its blessingsthanklessly and turned them to manyevil ends. But the water that comesfrom the mighty Pitcher of Aquarius isnot merely to fructify Nature, but tofructify man; to fructify his spiritualnature and bring about his spiritualbirth. Like the water of the PisceanAge, it begins its work for the worldand humanity with a devastating bap-thin of fire put to its lowest useswar.Yet when this deluge has subsidedformany of its waters and much of theirdebris are still with usit will prove tobe of the greatest blessing to mankind.

Everything we see in Nature has itscounterpart in us. And just as thegentle baptism of rain from heavenbrings up the beautiful flowers and per-fects the fruits and grains, so in ourhearts and lives. ji we will open thedoors and recognize it, will the new bap-tism that the Aquarian Age is pouringout fructify everything in us that cor-responds to that which is fructified in

58 The Divine MotherNature by the physical water. WhileNature will still put forth in greaterperfection and profusion than ever be-fore, still in every flower and fruit therewill be a new potency, more force, morelife, a greater beauty. Just so in ourspiritual lives. Each of us will receiveour baptism whether we recognize it ornot, for this liquid fire which cleansesas well as fructifles wells up in eachheart and in each body. But it mustfirst purge ere it begins to beautify.

If we do not know and understandwhat is taking place we may becomediscouraged. We will think things arefalling away from us; that the world isnot the same; that our old joys nolonger satisfy, our old companions seemto have changed. Understand and know, then, that it is the result of the new bap-tism. It is the Water of Life washingaway and consuming all that we donot need on our Soul's journey, all thathampers our ongoing. portant epoch of astrological events, tryto realize what the passing into thisAquarian Age means to us. For just asthe excessive water of the earlier Agesbrought forth mighty trees, because thosetrees gathered from the water more thanthe other forms of vegetation and thusbecame monuments of what veetation-could accomplish, so will it be with thisWater of Life of this New Age. Thefirst fruits that will attract attentionmay be giant intellects, mighty hearts, great Teachers of the Race. Neverthe-less, the little flowers will also springup. Dwell on this thought and watchdaily for the little shoots that are com-ing up, and do not trample them in themire through ignorance or lack of care.

Perhaps our baptism will manifest onlyas a greater love for our fcllowmen; forsomeone whom we have perhaps notloved before, who has seemed in someway not iite what we wanted him tobe. We will wonder what has happened.why our outlook has changed. It is be-cause the Water of Life has saturatedthe soil of our hearts and a flower ofjoy is sprouting. Perhaps we may findthat when we open our lips to speak ahelpful or kind word wonderful thingswill flow from them. We may be sur-prised and say, "Surely, that is not what

60 The Divine MotherI intended to say! Something greatertha I was speaking through me." Butit is not so. The Water of Life hasfallen upon our hearts, has fallen uponour intellects, has fallen upon ourtongues. We have been filled to over-flowing and are simply growing spiritu-ally and expressing the new lessons asblossoms of our Real Self.

CHAPTER IV

THE COMFORTER"And I will pray the Parker, and be shall give

you another Comforter, that be may abide withyou forever; even the Spirit of Truth; whom theworld cannot receive, because it seeth him not.neither knoweth him... But the Comforter, whichis the Holy Ghost, whom the rather will sendin my name, he shall teach you all things, andbring all things to your remembrance.... Never.theless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient foryou that I p away; for if I go not away, theCcmforter will not come unto you." St. Johs, xii.16.26; xvi, 7.

"Earth, my Mother, bid me learnTruth in darkness to discern.Like thy forces, silentlyWork in true humility.

Air - that blows from heaven's dome.Waft me to my Father's home.Whisper softly words of LoveTo man below from Gcd above."

HE human heart yearns for com-fort. Out of the hearts of human-ity there arises a great longing to

understand what the Holy Ghost and61

Page 66: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

62 The Divine Motherthe Comforter can be, yet among theGnostics and early Christians the HolyGhost was universally regarded as thefeminine Principle of the Godhead, theDivine Mother.

In the turmoil, striving and disappoint.ments of life, as we reach out almostblindly for comfort, we are often tempt-ed to think that it is all a dream, a beau-tiful vision; that either there is no Com-forter or that this mystical power whichthe Father is to send can only come tous through great renunciation, sacrificeand crucifixion. But, in very truth, theComforter is here now and will remainwith us "even unto the end of theworld." We do not realize its presencebecause we, like the world, cannot receiveit because we see it not, neither know it.

The Comforter is, indeed, the Spiritof Truth and Love but it is more. Itis the nourishing essence of the OneLife, manifesting as the Mother-forceor the Holy Ghost. This cosmic Mother-principle was manifested to a superlativedegree through the great teacher, Jesus.Hence it was expedient for the world thatHe cease to focus and individualize itthat we might learn to know and recog-nize it a& the Mother-power of bringingforth in all things; that power of unfoldment which is ever tending toward

Page 67: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

perfection and evc out-growing old andworn-out conditions.

This Comforter, this divine Urge toBring Forth, is with us as truly todayas ever in the history of the world.Should it cease for one moment the çn-tire manifested Cosmos would becomedead and inert. While we should alwayshold the idea of Jesus as a lovingteacher, helper and example, still therecomes a time in each life when it is ex-pedient for Him, as an individualizedideal, to go away; for, as He said: "IfI go not away the Comforter cannotcome." This means that as long as wecling to the personality of even thegreat Master Jesus, we are looking toan outside source for help, whereas tofind the Comforter we must look within. Then we will find it not only within ourown hearts, but within the heart of allthings, for the Comforter or the HolyGhost is the same outgoing divineMother.essence of die Godhead which inthe springtime enbles the life-force torejuvenate the cold, dead world into aparadise of flower and perfume and songof bird.

Only when this is understood and werealize that the great stream of DivineLove is ever near us, surrounding usand holding us fast and keeping us in

Page 68: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

64 The Divine Motherall our ways, watching over us as amother and bringing forth in us a real-ization of the nearness and reality ofthe Divine, only then are we ready toreceive the Comforter. For as long aswe look to the historical conception ofthe Teacher who walked the Earth solong ago, and look to Him alone for sus-taining comfort, the Comforter, the HolyGhost, the Divine Mother, whom Hepromised that the Father would sendand indeed does send to every seeking, understanding Soulcannot contact us,for we have not qpened the door of ourunderstanding. Yet when we do openthis door and enter in we will find notonly the Comforter, but also Her Son,the real Jesus, as the Sun of Righteous-ness, waiting for us; for this little innerdoor opens into the "Father's house," orthat state of spiritual consciousness tech-nically called "the Kingdom of Heaven,"where we will be greeted as "Sons ofGod" and "joint heirs with Christ." Re-member, the Kingdom of Heaven is notan after-death state, but a state of spir-itual consciousness to be attained hereand now.*

When recognized and welcomed, this() It will be extremely enlightening if itudent,

will look up all reference, to the Kingdom ofHeaven in the New Teatament. keeping the aboveidea in minL

The Comforter 65

Comforter shall indeed teach us allthings and bring to our remembrance notonly all that Jesus taught, but all thegreat cosmic truths which God has con-tinually revealed to the men of all agesthrough His illumined seers, sages andprophei.

There is no problem in the higher lifewhose solution we cannot find worked outfor us by Nature; for that which is truein Nature is correspondingly true in man,the microcosm. And so it is with this ques-tion. We see the seed planted in the earththat it may unfold its germ and enter intoa higher manifestation of life through ex-pression. But with the Father-force of theSun alone it will not germinate, for itcannot sprout in dry soil. It sproutsaccording to the amount of moisture(Mother-force) in the soil. Also the Sunmust "go away" or withdraw or theteed will wither. On the other band,if the earth - moisture be excessiveit will rot before it germinates. If theseed is placed in water alone it willgerminate and sprout to a certain extent, but it will never grow and flower untilplanted in the earth, just as some Soulsseem to flourish for a time on love alone, yet can never mature without experi-ence and understanding. But when the

Page 70: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

66 The Divine Motherseed is planted in the earth and is givena judicious amount of moisture and ajudicious amount of sunshine, there isbrought into activity, first within theearth and then within the seed, a thirdelement, which is neither moisture norsunshine, yet which is the potent factorin growth.

It is this third force, the third personof the Trinity, the life-potency broughtinto manifestation through the actionand reaction of the Father-Motherforces within the womb of Earth, bywhich Nature vitalizes the seed, and bymeans of which the astral pattern of thefuture tree or flower is unfolded andthe miracle of physical manifestation andembodiment is perforned.

First, there is an absorption of waterand an expansion of the seed from with-in, then a bursting asunder of the huskand a little sprout puts forth. Then traythread-like rootlets appear. This ush-ing and expanding from within continuesuntil a green shoot appears above theground and continues to grow until ftproduces flower and fruit. The never-ceasing force which has produced thismiracle is neither Sun nor water, neitherFather nor Mother, but the result of theinteraction of both forces in harmony

Page 71: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

The Comforter 67

and unitythe Son, the cosmic Christ-force.

This same miracle is wrought in hu-inanity as each Soul, like the unsproutedseed shut up within a shell of dense, materialistic conceptions and placed inhard Earth conditions, begins to unfoldthrough the Mother-force from within,All the forces of earthly conditions, thestern realities of life, the softenin powerof love and the fires of adversity, arenecessary to awaken and expand theconsciousness, break through the shell offormer limiting conceptions and allow theComforter to bring forth and manifestthe new growth in the life.

Only as we grow, expand and receivethe mystical baptism of the Holy Ghostcan the Spirit of Truth within each heartsend up its sprout into the higherRealms of Light, put forth its leaves, its blossoms, its fruit and become amighty tree whose unfoldment shall fur-nish the birds of the air a nesting place, and whose leaves shall be for the heal-ing of the nations.

This unfoldment of the Christ Withinus is due to the Comforter or Mother-force because, just as in Nature, thissame Spirit of Truth unfolds an uglyand apparently dead seed into a thing.of life and beauty, according to the

Page 72: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

68 The Divine MotherTruth and beauty of its astral pattern,so are we assured that through this samecosmic Spirit we arc destined to outgrowand leave behind all the hampering con-ditions and the old husks of our out-grown conceptions which so limited ouroutlook on life in the earlier stages ofour growth. By dwelling in the con-sciousness of this inner, unseen Com-forter we shall gradually but surely al,.sorb the Love and unfold all our latentgod-powers, even unto the perfectionand flower of Christhood.

But to attain this spiritual unfoldmentthere are three main stages to be passed. The seed must rst be planted in theearth. That is we the Thinker, the IAm, must be planted within the liznita-tions of the vehicle of flesh which is ourrepresentative upon Earth, and by thepower of the Christ-life within we mustgradually learn to gather up from ourearthly experiences the lessons which willexpand our consciousness nd soften thehusk of our personality. We will thenrealize that this dark Earth condition inwhich we find ourselves planted is notour real home. Our home is in theRealms of Light above the Earth. Weare only temporarily buried in the dark-ness, as is the seed, that we may putforth our roots and absorb the forces

Page 73: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

The Comforter 69

of earth necessary to enable us to sendup our sprout to function in the higherrealms and unfold the ßower of Christ-hood.

Our environment and daily duties cor-respond to the womb of Mother Earth. If we recognize this we will see thatwhile they may seem dark they arc reallysoft and warm and mellow. But crcthe fructification of the Christ-seed cantake place there must be a realization ofthe Mother-force of Divine Love and arealization of how the Father-force ofDivine Wisdom, like the physical Sun,sheds its illuminating rays upon the justand uhjust, its warming and vitalizinglife-forces penetrating into the sorrowsand heart-aches, the bitterness and pov.erty of Earth conditions, giving warm, sustaining power even to the unawakenedseeds.

Once grasp this conception and we willsee the manifestation of the Comfortereverywhere around us. It is the innerUrge to Bring Forth that is ever seekingto bring into expression the inner mys-tical potenciesthe Spirit of Truthback of and within all life conditions.Through the manifestation of this greatdesire to express love, to assimilate andbring forth, the burst and outgrownhusk of every seed is disintegrated, ab-

Page 74: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

70 The Divine Mothersorbed and its life-essence indrawn asnourishment for the growing sprout, sothat as a former limitation, like a dis-carded garment, it is soon forgotten. Thus shall it be with us when we allowthe Spirit of Truth to manifest in usunder all circumstances.

Then shall every hard condition yieldup its spiritual essence or lesson and ourlimitations, tribulations and sorrowsshall exist no more even as a memory, for the Comforter has transmuted theminto the joy of the unfolding Soul-life.For just as this same love-force tends toheal every wound, so does it tend toheal every sorrow. Without the tenderand nourishing care of the Comforter theSon cannot be brought forth within usor the Christ be born in our hearts; forthe Christ-consciousness cannot be bornin a heart that is as cold and hard as adry, unsoftened seed.

A mere intellectual conception of thislaw of Nature is not enough. Theremust be a manifestation. Only the bap-tism of the Holy Dove descending uponthe Christ-man as he stands in the riverJordan can awaken the Spirit of Truthwithin us. The instant we realize thepower of the Christ-force within us andcan say and really mean: "I can con-quer. By the power of the Christ within

Page 75: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

The Comforter 71

I can accomplish," we have prepared thesoil of our minds and hearts and havesent up a ray of aspiration which shallmake the descent of the Holy Ghostfrom heaven, like a warm spring rain, not only possible, but a reality to ourconsciousness.

Remember also that the - actual demon-stration requires a commingling of thedivine potency of the two forcesthewarmth of the Father and the moistureof the Mother, first the understanding, then the realizationto bring forth inthe life. Both must have their manifes-tation within our Earth conditions; forit is that mystical force which is bornof the commingling of the Sun and airwith moist earth which makes the flowerput forth and grow.

How hopeless, therefore, for the faint-hearted and despondent ones who reallydesire to grow to sit down and cry outto the Great Ones to pour out uponthem as a gift something that can satisfytheir heart-hunger only when developedfrom within! In their despair they cryout: 'Why do others receive and growwhile I seem to stand still ' Why hasthe seed beside me put up its sprout andflourished while I, with all my great de-sire to grow, still seem germinating

Page 76: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

72 The Divine Motherwithin the soils Why does God turna deaf ear to my prayers r

While God and the Masters and allthe heavenly Hierarchies do pour outtheir forces of help and love, like theSun and rain, upon us in response to ourcry for Light, yet no one but ourselvescan bring to us the Comforter. Remeni-her how Simon offered money to Peter ina vain effort to obtain the gift of theHoly Ghost. Peter replied: "Thy moneyperish with thee, because thou baitthought that the gift of heaven may bepurchased by money. Thou bait neitherpart nor lot in this matter; for thyheart is not Tight in the sight of God."

We cannot buy this gift. We cannotforce it. We must grow and unfold andlive it. i in our environment (the soil)we do our full duty with an aspiringheart, an open mind and some compre-hension of the Law of Growth; if wepermit our intellectual comprehensionto bring forth in us the power to believein ourselvesnot in our weak and un-developed lower, personal, human self, but in our Greater Self, our Real andDivine Selfwe will realize that just asthe evolving Christ-force in Nature ex-tracts the life potencies from the soil, the water, air and sunshine, so will it andmust it extract from our conditions the

The Corn!orterpowe! to accomplish, to conquer. Onlyby such owledge, faith and maaiifestlug of the Law can w cxtr$Ct theWater of Life or the force of the Coiufortes from the baptism of the holyGhost.

Nature drinks in this mystic F.lixir ofLifcautOIfladY because, being withoutfree-will, it follows instmCtl'* the Willof God. But man must of: his Own ac-cord choose to correlate with this force.Because he is made iii the image of Godhe must choose to let the ComfortCr mani-fest within bun. For there is no suchthing as coercion in the higher realms.

Man is inspired and uided towardthe right path. but then is left free toexercise his power of choice and free-will. lie must learn to rely upon andtrust it consciously, cn as Nature doesuiztinctvrely. knowing that it will grad-ually unfold all his divine possibilitiesinto the perfect Ideal be is destined toexpress, just as surely as it unfolds thebud Into the ßower.

We are told that Solomon in all hiswas notaXTaY like a lily of the

held. This mean' that even though manattains to the wisdom of a Solomon, hecannot array his Soul in as perfect anouter expres5i0 of beauty and harmonyas does the lily. Only by living calmly,

74 The Divine Mothertrustfully, confidently and lovingly inthe realization of the mystic glory andpower of his Real Self and permittingthe force of the Comforter to unfoldthe perfect pattern can he be arrayedas the lily or manifest the blossom ofSoul perfection.

Once this is realized, the loving Mas-ter Jesus no longer symbolizes a cruci-fied Saviur; for if the Comforter hasgathered into our consciousness all themystical lessons of the crucifixion, it hasbecome transmuted into our new life.We do not need a crucified Jesus, buta living and glorified one. If His dis-ciples had watched with Him when Hewas passing through the agony ofGethsemane, He would not have beenbetrayed unto death. But t the periodof development this event symbolizes theSpirit of Truth--the love for and innermystical comprehension of the nature ofthe Christhad not been poured outupon the disciples, hence the betrayaland crucifixion followed.

Taking the life of Jesus to symbolizethe steps in the unfoldment of the Chris.consciousness in perfected man, do wenot see the above scene enacted today inthe life experience of every advancingSoul? All must soma day enter theGarden of Gethsemane and there go

apart to commune with the Father, leav-ing the outer facultiesthe disciples andfollowersto watch, s. e., to patientlyremain on guard, believing and trustingin the power of the Soul to gain theforce and strength necessary to meetwhatever may come. But how often theyfall asleep and allow the desires of theworld to enter in and betray theirChrist! Three times did Jesus returnand wake His disciples, saying: "Can yenot watch with me one hourT' Yetagain they slept and allowed their Mas-ter to be led away to the crucifixion.

But today, if we profit by our lessonsand experiences and receive the sustain-ing force of the Comforter, we can trainall our faculties to watch that the Lordthe Lawshall not be betrayed andour Christ crucified. If any of us arenow watching and praying in the Gar-den of Sorrow, and the power we loveand trust seems for a little while to havewithdrawn from us, Jemember this les--

Page 80: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

76 The Divine Motherpost of duty and our Lord cannot becrucified, for He is no longer a person.ality but an ever-living, ever-presentand ever-sustaining power.

This is the Comforter which shall re-main with us always "even unto theend of the world." There shall be nomore doubts or sorrows, for the Com-forter is within us; the Pentecostal Firehas descended upon and filled us; thefive-pointed star has arisen in all its gloryupon our horizon; the fifth rib has givenforth- its Eve and lo! a companion andhepmeet for us is forever by our side.

The ribs are a most important partof the physical frame work and servemany mystical functions. Like the armsof a loving mother, they enwrap and pro-tect the vital organs. They are attachedto the spinal column and convey thenerves from the spinal cord. In fact, they are the branches of the Tree of Lifeplanted in the midst of the Garden; inone sense the branches of the mystic Vineto which Jesus referred when He said:"I am the Vine and ye are the branches."

The Christ-force is the life or sap ofthe Vine and is distributed to thebranches. In the body this sap mani-fests as the Aundalini force which isdrawn up out of the soil of our lowernature and flows up the spinal cord-

Page 81: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

The Corn!orier 77each chahrarn or center having its ownparticular potency and functionuntil itreadies the pineal gland and ultimatelyopens the Third Eye. The ribs, beingbranches of the Tree and carrying thenerves, which are branches of the Vine, must also receive this vital sap.

Since we know this kundalini, or serbpent power, is a dynamic,. fiery forcewhich brings either life or death whenaroused, we can realize the great secretwhich was revealed by the symbol of Eveunfolding from the fifth rib of Adam, forit is the fifth manifestation of this fieryforce which completes the evolution ofthe man of the Fifth Race.

Applying this symbol to the personallife, the Real Man is the Vine, whilethe Christ-force in him is the sap orlife of the Vine. The branches are thevarious personalities which the Real Selfputs forth in the various incarnations. It is the work of the Real Self to drawthe sap of life, or the vital essence, fromthe alchemical laboratory of experiencein Earth conditions and send it forth toall the branches, so that when He entersinto -oneness with the Father, He willfind that all the personalities have yield-ed their experience.

Such branches (personalities) as refuseto allow the sap of the Christ to flow

Page 82: The Divine Mother - The Order of Christian Mystics FH and HA...voice, soft as the whisper of a gentle hr from heaven, She says: "Children, be-hold my Son!" And She beckons to the heart-hungry

78 The Divine Motherthrough them and bear fruit will be cutoff and destroyed like the barren fig tree,1. e., will be disintegrated and theirforce indrawn into the Real Self, just asthe disintegrating fallen branches act asfertilizer around a tree and their force isindrawn into the sap. But even thosome branches arc destroyed, the treehas -gathered the experience or life-essence from each, so that the fruit shallcontain the potency of every branch, leafand twig the tree has ever put forth.

Each one of us, like the disciples ofold, are called to gather around a mani-festation of the Christ. And just inproportion as it is possible for our facul-ties, forces, thoughts and aspirations tocorrelate with that mystic Sap of Life, iust to that extent will the Vine sendits vital life-force through all its ribsand branches. If we sincerely and per-sistently strive to dwell in the conscious.ness and power of the mystic Comforter,we will soon begin to see signs ofgrowth. We will find our hearts growingmore tender.
