Horsham pays respects to air show crash victimsResidents are paying respects in Horsham to those who died in the Shoreham Air Show disaster.
People shocked by the death toll in the tragic plane crash on Sat-urday afternoon are signing books of condolence opened to give the community somewhere to share messages of support and sympa-thy.
The accident is now believed to have claimed 11 lives, including three young men from West Sus-sex, and is the worst of its kind to happen in the county or in East Sussex.
A coroner has warned that it could be several weeks before all investigations are completed, and names of most of the dead have not yet been made public.
One of the books of condolence will be at County Hall North, Chart
Way, Horsham, opening hours Monday to Friday 9am-5pm ex-cluding bank holidays.
An online book of condolence is also available at: www.shoreham-condolence.org
At the time of the Post going to press police believed the toll of 11 people who died after a military jet crashed on to the busy A27 during a display was unlikely to increase, after detailed examination of the large area of wreckage.
For eye-witnesses Tim Wood-hatch and his son Sam, from Hor-sham, it was the third time they had seen a crash at Shoreham. Tim signed the condolence book in Horsham on Wednesday and re-called the horror of the crash.
The latest disaster came as Tim and Sam watched on the corner of Coombes Road and the A27 after cycling from Bramber.
Tim told the Post that about 1.15 pm the Hawker Hunter went up and over for a fl ypast adjacent to the runway then up again. It then did a bank turn to the left ready to
level out over the A27.As it levelled out an alarmed
Tim said to Sam: “He's not going to make it" and the plane dropped nose up and “belly” down onto the traffi c about 40 yards from where they were standing.
Tim shouted to Sam:"Run!" as they felt the immense heat and the feeling of objects hitting the backs of their legs, leaving scratches.
Tim said that after checking themselves for injuries they went back to the scene to check for sur-vivors but had to turn away.
Tim said: “I approached one of the cars but was shouted at by sev-eral people to get back in case of a secondary explosion.
“The emergency services were on the scene immediately.”
In 2007 at the Shoreham Air Show pilot Brian Brown died when the Hurricane he was fl ying crashed. Three years later a pilot survived after a glider crashed on to a runway.
Great response to disaster fund (see page three).

Elephantastic fund-raiser praised by visitor Julie Walters
Acting star Julie Walters praised the Elephantastic fund-raiser when she visited the town.
Julie is pictured at the Elephant Park in Swan Walk signing two el-ephants for the Samaritans of Hor-sham and Crawley. She told the Post’s Dave Smith at the event on Wednesday of last week : “I am so happy to be here signing the Sa-maritans elephants today. All the elephants are so beautifully deco-rated and the whole thing gives so much life to the town and is so well
organised. The children must have had so much fun during the sum-mer going around them all. It’s wonderful.”
People are still hitting the El-ephantastic trails in search of the decorated creatures and have until the end of the month.
The models will be auctioned to raise more funds for charity in the scheme run by Horsham Rotary Club.
Julie is pictured signing a model elephant.
People give generously to Air Crash Fund
Well-wishers are pouring thou-sands of pounds into a Shoreham Air Crash fund after Saturday’s dis-aster.
It was set up by West Sussex Coun-ty Council and Adur and Worthing Councils in conjunction with Sus-sex Community Foundation, a char-ity that raises funds for and makes grants to local charities and commu-nity groups across Sussex.
The fundraising page can be found at Go to www.justgiving.com/sus-sexgiving
Donations can be made on the website, via text or by telephone.
Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “This tragedy has aff ected so many people and one of the ways in which people have been showing they care is by making donations. In response to the many requests this fund has been set up so there is a central place for those donations.”
Within a short time of Saturday’s crash video clips of the plane’s last
moments were on social media and television as people near the scene recorded them on mobile telephones and cameras.
The large airfi eld crowd and oth-ers on vantage points near the A27 watched horrifi ed as the Hawker Hunter failed to gain height again during a loop. It crashed on to the busy main road and passing traffi c, turning parts of the road into a fi re-ball. Wreckage was scattered over a wide area and the A27, which was badly damaged, was still closed this week while investigators examined the scene.
Full emergency plans were quickly put into operation by police, ambu-lance and fi re teams with more than 300 police offi cers and many fi re and ambulance crews from Sussex in-volved.
People near the crash tried to help despite the fi erce heat and danger of explosion from fuel left on the plane and in badly damaged cars.
Among those known to have died
in the disaster are Maurice Abra-hams, 76, a chauff eur and former Grenadier Guard and police offi cer, from Brighton; Worthing United FC players Matthew Grimstone and Ja-cob Schilt, who were on their way to a match, and personal trainer Matt Jones, from Littlehampton.
More than 200 people called police inquiring about relatives or friends they feared might be have been struck by the plane.
The Senior Coroner for West Sus-sex Penny Schofi eld warned earlier this week that work on identifying the victims will be a “slow and pains-taking operation.”She said: “My heartfelt sympathies go to all those aff ected by this tragic accident, but it may be several weeks before all in-vestigations are completed.”
The remains of the plane are now being examined by specialists at Farnborough. The experienced pilot of the plane, Andy Hill, survived the impact and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
Police investigating the rape of a young woman on a footpath in Hor-sham have issued a photograph of a man they wish to interview.
In the early hours of August 16 the 22-year old Horsham woman left Pir-ies bar in the town centre with a man. They walked along East Street and down The Causeway past St Marys Church, to a footpath which goes off to the left, where the attack took place.
Detectives are keen to identify and speak with the man shown in the pho-tograph who may be able to help the investigation.
They are also keen to speak with a group of men who we believe spoke to the woman after she was assaulted.
Detective Sergeant Jon Robeson said : “"Anyone who can identify the man, or who was in the area at the time and saw the man and woman, or who has any other information, is asked to contact Sussex Police on [email protected] or call 101, quoting se-rial 368 of 16/08. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
The incident is not being connected with any other recent rapes incidents in Horsham.
Offi cers have been making intensive enquiries in the area since the crime was reported, and the woman has been receiving expert medical and welfare support

Youngsters reach fi nals at Festival of Code with Elephantastic entryA talented trio of Horsham school-girls went all the way to a fi nal when they developed an alarm in-spired by the Elephantasic fund-raiser.
Maddie Embling, eight, Emily Kent seven, and Charlotte Dargue, seven, designed their “Intelligent Elephant Alarm Clock” for this year’s Festival of Code.
The creation was entered in the “Should Exist” category and judges were so impressed that the girls took their eye-catching alarm to the fi nal, known as the fi nale, at the National Exhibition Centre in Bir-mingham.
Their class title was won by Pedal Plan, an app designed to provide the safest possible route for cycle jour-neys, but the Horsham youngsters acquitted themselves well showing the alarm to the large crowd.
Youngsters had spent six days preparing at Albany House in the Bishopric, Horsham, home to hosts Red River Software and event sup-porters Strategic IC, working on digital prototyping.
Gavin Hewins gave the elephant to the youngsters, and it was deco-rated by Dorit Moshkovitz.
The girls used commonly availa-ble weather data that will wake peo-ple up according to weather or light.
They introduced into the alarm birdsong and then louder noises, including an elephant, to highlight the plight of endangered animals.
The clock will be auctioned for charity through the Horsham Ro-tary Club, which organised the El-ephantastic Trails in the town and beyond.
People are still busy tracking the trails, with the prospect of a holiday in Nairobi for the winner. The event will raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Organisers of next Monday’s Wis-borough Green August Bank Holi-day Fete and Horticultural Show have their fi ngers crossed for a sunny day.
Last year’s fete was dogged by heavy rain but still raised more than £3000 for charity.
The fete starts at 1pm, with dog show judging at 2pm. The village green will feature traditional side-shows, children’s swing boats, fun dog show, ferret racing, Shire Horse parade, horticultural marquee and races for the young and not so young.
Chair of the Wisborough Green Fete Committee Laura Ward said:“Despite the torrential rain last year we had a great day, with hun-
dreds of people turning out in their wellies and raincoats to support this fantastic family event. Whilst it was a rather soggy, we were still able to donate more than £3000 to a vari-ety of local good causes including the village youth club, the stool ball team and the Sussex Air Ambulance service.”
Laura said: “We are really pleased this year to welcome back local charity Canine Partners to the event, they will be showing the fantastic work they do with a dog and handler demonstration at 1.15pm in the dog show ring.”

Traders warned about dodging buying after man fi ned in Horsham caseTraders are being warned to be care-ful where they buy stock after a Hor-sham shop keeper was fi ned for sell-ing unsafe loom bands and charms to children.
Rinku Juneja, owner of Horsham Mobile Phone Repair Centre, in West Street, pleaded guilty to breaching the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008 at Worthing Magistrates’ Court. He received a 12 month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £746.50 costs as well as a a £15 victim surcharge.
Magistrates ordered the forfeiture of the unsafe loom bands.
One of Juneja’s staff had purchased the stock from a cold caller to his business.
The case has prompted West Sussex Trading Standards Offi cers to issue a warning to businesses to be on their guard when it comes to buying stock from unknown sources.
It was during a routine toy safety check on the Mobile Phone and Repair Centre that Trading Standards Offi cers made a test purchase of loom bands and charms.
Subsequent tests found that the charms were un-safe due to much higher than permitted amounts of Phthalates - a chemi-cal substance that makes plastic softer.
Phthalates are only permitted in very small amounts however, in high-er concentrations, studies have shown links to fertility problems and cancer.
Experts say children in particular are uniquely vul-
nerable to phthalate exposures given their hand-to-mouth behaviours and developing nervous and reproductive systems.
Peter Aston, Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “Where traders purchase their stock from untraceable sources they have no way of checking if the products they are selling comply
with the strict safety laws that protect our children. They will also be respon-sible for any products that are deemed to be unsafe if they cannot provide re-cords of the products they are stock-ing.”
Trading Standards offi cers returned to the shop and seized the remaining unsafe stock.
David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Resi-dents’ Services with responsibility for trading standards, said: “I hope this case sends a clear message that we will take immediate action to prevent unsafe toys being sold and to protect children from the long term aff ects these chemicals could have.”
If you think you might have bought any unsafe children’s toys, please let trading standards know by call-ing 03454 040506 or report online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport
The case has prompted West Sussex Trading Standards Offi cers to issue a warning to businesses to be on their guard
Hospice appeals for more help in Storrington area
More help is needed in the Stor-rington area to support a hospice.
Mary Bye and Neil Francis from the St Barnabas House Fundraising Team are looking for volunteers in the Storrington, Sullington and West Chiltington area to form a Friends supporter group to help with local activities.
They say people may volunteer for as little as couple of hours a month and their support would make a huge diff erence to the patients and fami-lies cared for by St Barnabas House.
John Brenton, pictured, has been involved with St Barnabas House since 1978.
He is a founder member of the hospice’s Storrington Friends Group, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Since 1995 the group has raised nearly £60,000 from events as well as managing the supply of St Barna-bas collecting boxes and Christmas pin badges to local businesses.
John said: “I’ve hugely valued my time with St Barnabas House and I will always be involved where I can. Their work is so important for the community and it’s been a privilege to work with them for so long.”
Although the group says John has done a fantastic job leading Stor-rington Friends, he is keen to hand over the reins to a new leader or group.
Storrington is an important place for St Barnabas House. Founder Dr Francis Gusterson, who established the hospice in 1973, was a local GP and anaesthetist and lay reader in the Storrington area, and worked with John for some time at the beginning of his St Barnabas career.
There are 12 St Barnabas House Friends Groups all over Sussex, made up of volunteer supporters, and vary in size from individuals to larger groups, who help in any way they can. They raise funds for the hospice by organ-ising events such as quiz nights, bring and buy stalls, fl ower shows, street collections, barbecues, tea parties and raffl es. They also help raise awareness by publicising the hospice’s work in their town or village.
Neil and Mary would be delighted to see anyone interested and chat about some of ideas to help get a new Friends Group off the ground. The Fundraising Team can be contacted on 01903 254777 or by email at [email protected]

BREAKING NEWSCLINICALLY PROVEN TO HELP REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TINNUTUS
Super Sol jumps to it in GCSE success with 10 A*sSuper Horsham student Sol Del-ler showed you can mix sport and study in this year’s GCSE results.
Sol loves nothing more than get-ting out on the playing field and competing in long jump at national level.
But his outstanding results how that he went to great lengths to en-sure his studies were not compro-mised.
Thousands of youngsters across West Sussex are absorbing the suc-cess or in some cases the disap-pointment of their GCSE results, an-nounced last Thursday.
And none of the pupils was more delighted than Sol, 16, a former Southwater Junior Academy pupil, who scored 10 A*/A grades.
Sol said of his double success this year : “I have little words to describe
how I feel. It’s like everything com-ing together at the right place and at the right time and also balancing my athletics career, having achieved the English Schools’ Standard in long jump. It’s all quite overwhelming”.
His school, Christ’s Hospital at Horsham, reports that 70.1% of all grades were at A* or A, 91.0% gained A* - B and the overall pass rate was 99.9%.
Other schools reported satisfac-tion with their results this year, in some cases setting new standards.
Across West Sussex students have achieved significant successes in this year’s GCSE results, early fig-ures show.
Education authority West Sus-sex County Council says results, as measured by the 5A*to C including English and maths, have improved
from last year’s result of 58 per cent to about 61 per cent this year, a three per cent rise.
Of the county’s 37 secondary schools, well over half have im-proved their results compared to last year. Although the figures need to be validated later this year, once again the rise is likely to place West Sussex above the national average.
Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Edu-cation and Skills, said: “This year’s results are a fantastic achieve-ment and are a clear testament to how hard our students have studied throughout the year.
“Being above the national average shows the high quality of schooling in the county, whether they are lo-cal authority maintained schools or academies.”

The date September 2 signalled the official end of the Second World War.
Before then the last two weeks in August 2015 were ones of great cel-ebration in Horsham as World War Two ended with the defeat of Japan. On August 15 1945 Japan surren-dered but did not formally surren-der until September 2, giving rise to some confusion about when VJ day occurred. But Horsham was ready to party as soon as possible.
Jeremy Knight of Horsham Mu-seum, with help from Julie Mitchell, recalls a momentous period that he calls ‘The Forgotten End to War’.
17 August 2015 marked the 70 an-niversary of Victory in Japan. In May this year, the nation commemorated VE Day, but VJ Day is always seen as the forgotten event. Those who fought in the Far East tend to be for-gotten about in the UK, though in the United States because of its history in the war, the day has great signifi-cance. In 1945, as the accounts below show, Horsham celebrated this mo-mentous day in style. The follow-ing account has been transcribed by Horsham District Council’s Museum volunteer Julie Mitchell.
Friday 17 August 1945CROWDS DANCE IN THE CARFAXBeginning in a small way on
Wednesday morning when it became known that the war with Japan had ended, the spirit of celebration at Horsham worked up to a crescendo of jubilation as the day progressed, and the rejoicings continued throughout Thursday. Victory bells rang out early in the town to greet VJ Day and shops and houses soon blossomed forth with flags and bunting.
Many people had not heard the victory news on the radio at midnight and left home for work on Wednes-day morning as usual ignorant of the fact that the war had ended. Quite a number of the shops opened for a short time in the morning but then closed for the rest of the day and the following day.
HOUR OF TRIUMPHChildren carried flags and young
women wore red white and blue hair ribbons.
The heavy rain in the morning did not damp the spirits of anyone for all were conscious that a heavy bur-den had been lifted, and that they would, in this hour of triumph, join
with good conscience in the nation’s rejoicing at the days of freer and hap-pier times.
Under the chairmanship of Mr. R. H.Redford (Chairman of the Urban Council), a number of people met in the Town Hall on Wednesday morn-ing and decided, in spite of the short notice, to carry on with the carnival arranged for VJ Day….
THE CARNIVALIn spite of the fact that it was ar-
ranged at a few hour’s notice, Hor-sham had what was probably the most enjoyable carnival in history on VJ Day, when seemingly the whole of the town responded to the call to make the day one that would never be forgotten.
The procession assembled in the Bishopric car park, and by the time it had started deep crowds lined the pre-arranged route. The procession was cheered all the way and when it reached the Carfax paper and coppers were showered upon it.
On VJ night a huge crowd in the Carfax heard the King’s speech re-layed from the Carfax Bandstand. It was followed by the playing of the National Anthem and three rousing cheers.
Coloured fairy lights round the bandstand added to the festive scene.
On both nights there were bon-fires in various parts of the town and on Thursday there was a huge bon-fire in the Park.
24 August 1945MORE VICTORY CELEBRATIONSStreet Parties for the ChildrenVJ parties have been held in vari-
ous parts of the town. DEVONSHIRE ROAD had one on
Saturday, the chief organiser being Mrs. F. Sainsbury. She was helped by all the ladies of the road.
The tables erected in the street were gaily decorated with flags and bunting and the children were treat-ed to a tea of sandwiches, cakes, jel-ly, blancmange and apples.
Games and dancing followed and the children were entertained by Mr. Howard and Mr. Horley who were dressed as clowns. In the evening a torchlight procession was held and with a drum at their head, the party paraded to the green adjoining Clar-ence Road where an effigy of Togo was burnt. Dancing for the adults until midnight followed.
INNES ROADA VJ party was given, followed by
sports and a social, to the children of Innes road on Saturday.
Sports were supervised by Mr. Fielder, Mr. Miles, Mr Manvell, Mr. Booker, Mr Edwards and Mr Holmes, and more prizes were awarded after which fruit, sweets and ices were served. Each child received a gift from a bran tub….Dancing and sing-ing carried on until midnight when the party closed with cheers for the organisers and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
VICTORY PARTY AT THE COMMONThe 148 children from the district
of the Common who sat down to a VJ tea on Saturday will not forget their experience in a hurry.
Representing Kempshott, Swin-don, Purton and Redford roads, Spencers Place and the north end of Trafalgar road, the children had a tea of jellies, cakes, oranges, toma-toes and other delicacies. The centre piece of the tables was an iced cake with the letters VJ installed on it…A firework display concluded.
VICTORY ROADVictory Road and Nelson Road
combined held a Victory party for the children on Tuesday. Owing to the unsettled weather, tea was held in the Nelson Hall instead of Victory Road as first planned.
HAPPY GATHERING AT NELSON HALL
A VJ party for the children of Mil-ton Road, Horsham, was held on Au-gust 22. Owing to the wet weather, this took place in the Nelson Hall, by kind permission of Mr. T. Williams, the landlord of the Nelson Hotel.
BARRINGTON ROADIn common with many other
streets in the town, Barrington Road decided to celebrate victory by giv-ing the children a party on Saturday afternoon.
HILLSIDEThe late warden of Post 4 gave a
Victory party to the children of Hill-side and The Crescent at the Wesley Hall on Saturday.
The children sat down to a tea which included fancy cakes and ices. This was followed by a Punch and Judy show, community singing and games. Each child was given a paper hat, which together with the prizes they won at the games, they proudly carried home.

At Farlington School there was delight at the 95 per cent A*- C pass rate.
Headmistress Louise Higson, said of the school’s the school’s GCSE results: “It is another superb set of GCSE results for the girls at Farling-ton.
“We are very proud of their indi-vidual achievements and, with an overall 95% A* to C pass rate, there is much to celebrate.
“These excellent results are part of
the personalised, all-round educa-tion on off er at Farlington.
“Not only do the girls achieve aca-demic success, but they also take full advantage of the wide range of extra-curricular activities and opportuni-ties on off er.
“My thanks go to the brilliant teaching staff whose passion and expertise for their specialist sub-jects enables all of the girls to achieve their full potential.”
Farlington school girls celebrate “another set of superb GCSE results”
Students at The Weald School in Billlingshurst are celebrating an-other excellent set of GCSE results.
Headteacher Peter Woodman said: “There was huge excitement, joy and some tears of relief as students opened envelopes to receive their GCSE results. Students have produced another bumper set of grades which match our best ever performance as a school with 72% of students achieving 5 or more A*-C grades or better in-cluding English and maths.
“We are pleased to see that all our students’ hard work has paid off . In recent years pass marks for the high-est grades have slowly been increas-ing so it is gratifying to see that our headline fi gures have been sustained and improved within this national context.”
With over 230 students in the year group over half of all grades were at A*-B and a quarter of students achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* or A. Over half of the students achieved a grade A or A* in at least one subject. 12% of all grades were at A*, twice the national average whilst 80% of all entries were at grade C or above some 11% above the national average.
There were some stunning indi-vidual performances with 23 students or 10% of the year group achieving 10 or more GCSEs at A or A* grades. Top performers included Alex Deng with 12 A*s / 1A, Elizabeth Hall with 11 A*s / 2 As, Emma Howse with 10 A*s / 2 As, Ben Ansell, Eleanor Goodier and Kyo Kaneko all with at least 9 A*s.
Joy and some tears at The Weald
Mr Woodman added, “We were thrilled to see so many students get-ting their targets grades. These days are not just about those students get-ting the highest grades but about all students achieving the grades they need for their next step in education.
The culture that we have developed here at The Weald means that stu-dents are prepared to work hard and be seen to work hard by their peers. It is fantastic to see the reaction from students when they see that all this hard work has paid off .”

What great weather, just in time for the kids to go back to school! Whilst you are deciding whether to scarify your lawn in the next few weeks (I would), have a little think on this quandary I found myself thinking on recently.
This year has been quite remark-
able, with many celebrations hon-ouring those that died as heroes sav-ing us from tyranny and oppression. 2015 marks many anniversaries of confl ict. 200 years since The Battle of Waterloo, 100 years since the Gal-lipoli Campaign in World War One. 75 years since the Battle of Britain in World War Two.
All of course moving occasions de-serving of our thanks to those that gave their lives. But whilst ponder-ing on their immense eff orts, some-thing dawned on me. Is gardening

the only creative art that doesn't celebrate the triumphs of war? If one looks at all the other artistic disci-plines, they all include works dedi-cated to the glorifi cation of war.
To name a few, in architecture we have the Arc de Triomphe famously built by the Corsican Upstart and Emperor Bonaparte - itself copied from the triumphal arches of Rome. In fi ne art, Paulo Uccello famously painted the Battle of San Marino as an early use of perspective; many artists before and since have painted and sketched some wonderful inter-pretations of battle.
In the post war Soviet Union, sculptures often depicted the heroes of Stalingrad and Moscow from the 'Great Patriotic War of 1941-45'. (It must be noted here that North Ko-rea still keeps this tradition fi rmly alive), but again all copied from ear-lier civilizations.
In dance and theatre we celebrate the triumphs of Henry V or Henry Tudor or the fabled wars of the Nut-cracker against the Rat King. Even the humble moustache has become a symbol of military wonder. (I am not of course talking here of Hit-ler's famous toothbrush, but the big bushy 'RAF' moustache recognised the country over as having distinct symbolism.)
But here's the oddity. I cannot fi nd any example of a garden dedi-cated to heroic victories - save for an embarrassing 'park' and monu-ment in New Zealand celebrating the shameful British victory in the second Maori War (Yes kids, that isn't in the National Curriculum). Which leads me to the quandary. Is gardening and nature symbolic in being separated from other creative disciplines? Should we build a gar-den to celebrate all those great vic-tories that have kept us free to say and do as we wish? (Of course Blen-heim Palace was gifted in return for victories in the wars of the Spanish Succession, but is not a celebration of the victory.)
Should we in Horsham open a gar-den dedicated to the brave person-nel of Sussex? Perhaps the quarter-masters and ordnance staff deserve recognition - those who manned the vitally important weapons stores of Depot Road? It would certainly be unique and a fi tting tribute to our military.

Where are the gardens to our soldiers?Warnham parish residents plan their development
Residents of Warnham parish have until the end of September to have their say about how the par-ish should develop over the next 15 years.
The ‘Community Survey’ asks for views on matters such as where and how many any new housing should be built, what type of housing it should be, what additional facilities the community needs and where lo-cal green spaces should be preserved or extended.
It asks local land owners if they would like to see their land devel-oped to meet the community’s re-quirements as identifi ed in previous surveys of the parish.
This all part of preparing the Neighbourhood Plan which Warn-
ham, along with other parishes na-tionwide, is drawing up.
A copy of the survey question-naire, which can also be completed on-line, will now arrive through the residents letterboxes shortly but should residents have ques-tions there are fi ve drop-in sessions planned for various venues in the parish.
The fi rst of these will be at the Vil-lage Show on Saturday.
Two will be held outside the village and butchers shops in Church Street on the mornings of September 5 and 26.
There will be one in Warnham Vil-lage Hall on the morning of Septem-ber 19 and one at The Owl in Kings-fold on the evening of September 22.

At the time of writing, summer is well and truly upon us…until of course the next bout of rain!
But with many folk fl ocking to beaches I thought it might be worth sharing a few stories that just may make you a tad hesitant when pad-dling in that salty water.
In July of this year (2015) a strange visitor; or so it would seem to many, washed up on the shoreline at Bex-hill-on-Sea. A creature; described as a “gelatinous mass” was carried by the foaming waves onto South Cliff . The object appeared like something out of a sci-fi movie – a peculiar round item with a strong blue colouration.
Thankfully the “blue monster” turned out to be nothing more harmful than a barrel jellyfi sh; common in these parts according to the Marine Conservation Soci-ety but such a story reminded me of similar and at times stranger in-vasions to pepper the county. For instance; a four-foot long jellyfi sh was “shocking Sussex beachgoers” in Sussex recently.
The object appeared on the beach like some glazed, rubbery eye peep-ing out from the sand. It had most likely, according to experts been
blown to these parts by strong winds. As recently as August 2015 hundreds of jellyfi sh were fi lmed off the coast of Sussex just a few miles off Littlehampton. Even so, in spite of numerous newspapers cre-ating panic; the creatures sighted only produce a mild sting.
But the biggest panic created this year in regards to Sussex took place in July when hundreds of sharks appeared in knee-deep water at Selsey. Although the fi ns may have caused those paddling to panic; the appendages belonged to what are known as Smooth-Hound sharks – found in waters ranging from those around the British Isles to the Mediterranean and also waters around South Africa and the Ca-nary Islands. Although the sharks can grow up to a couple of feet in length they are rarely a threat and are given their unusual name due to the fact that just like dogs they tend to congregate in packs.
Another panic of the jellyfi sh kind has also been started this year by numerous newspapers claiming that Portuguese Man of War’s were loitering in the warming waters off west Sussex. The Portuguese Man of war – also known as ‘fl oating terror’ – is a large jellyfi sh known for its long, trailing venomous tentacles which can deliver a harmful sting. According to press reports Selsey Bill and West Wittering were the areas frequented by such members
of the Physaliidae family although reports seemed non-existent. In 2010 however a Worthing woman claimed she had been stung by such a creature after she brushed past the jellyfi sh whilst swimming at Goring Gap. The sting caused her skin to come out in large lumps which were treated. A Peter Rich-ardson of the Marine Conservation Society commented that “We’ve not had any reports of Portuguese Man O’ War this year but we’ve had a higher number of sightings over the last three years. “We’ve had larger numbers of these off the south coast in the last three years and they’ve been moving east-wards. “As far as I know nobody has been killed by one in this country but they have been known to kill in other parts of the world.”
As if the jellyfi sh panic wasn’t enough to force waders and swim-mers out of Sussex waters, there was also weeverfi sh hysteria too. Okay, so ‘weeverfi sh hysteria’ is hardly a suitable name for an aquatic horror fi lm but the presence of the fi sh – known for its distinc-tive venomous dorsal fi ns – was enough to scare Brighton residents; with many claiming they had stood on such a fi sh which is often known, during the day to submerge itself in the sand and snap up any passing shrimps or small fi sh. So beware when frequenting those inviting waters around Sussex!

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT...
Guy Leonard & Co have been long standing advertisers with the District Post and in this time the newspaper has gone from strength to strength. We have seen our reach increase as distribution has expanded - the circulation of the District Post online as well as through local outlets across the district has been very well received with people that we talk to as many people do now access the paper online each week. The District Post is always willing to assist us with artwork and queries as well which is an extremely useful service - they are a great local team with a really good understanding of our requirements.

Life-savers win support from business
Volunteers who deliver life-sav-ing blood have won support from a Horsham business.
Serv Sussex will be the charity of the year for Station Garage after a public vote.
Serv Sussex off ers a free service delivering potentially life-saving blood, blood products and hu-man milk to Sussex hospitals. The charity, which is made up entirely of volunteers, works from 7pm to 6am 365 days a year.
Although the NHS Blood and Transport service provides a daily delivery service to hospitals, it has no free way of transporting blood around the country out of hours. Serv Sussex avoids the need for the NHS spending funding and re-sources on taxis, couriers or am-bulances to deliver blood to Sussex hospitals.
Simon Morley, co-ordinator for Serv Sussex said : “We are abso-
lutely thrilled to have been cho-sen to be Station Garage’s charity of the Year, we would like to thank everyone for voting as this would not have been possible without the public vote.”
James Thorpe, dealer principal at Station Garage, said: “We are delighted to announce that Serv Sussex is our charity of the year. It is important to us to support lo-cal organisations and community causes and we cannot wait to start fundraising to help this essential charity.
“ We would like to thank the public for voting and helping us to choose our winner and wish the other charities shortlisted all the best with their fundraising, they were all such worthy causes.”

The Capitol, Horsham, is delighted to be welcoming Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap this October (5-10).
Famous around the world, for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre, with over 25,000 performances, The Mousetrap is a play to be proud of.
The scene is set when a group of people, gathered in a country house cut off by the snow, dis-cover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspi-cious characters reveal their sordid pasts, until at the last, nerve-shredding mo-ment, the identity and the motive are fi nally r e v e a l e d . In her own
inimitable style, Dame Agatha Chris-tie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot, where murder lurks
around every corner.When The Mousetrap
opened in November 1952, with Richard At-tenborough and his fel-low fi lm-star and belov-ed wife Sheila Sim in the leading roles, it was only seven years since Hit-ler died; Much essential
food was still rationed, Mr Winston Churchill
was Prime Min-ister, Harry
Truman was President of the United S t a t e s and Sta-lin was r u l e r
of Russia; There was fi ghting in Ko-rea, and Princess Elizabeth began her long reign as Queen; The last tram ran in London, television programmes ended at 10.30 pm and the entire TV listings only occupied three and a half lines.
On November 25, 2002, The Mouse-trap celebrated its golden jubilee, with a Birthday Gala performance attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edin-burgh. Lord (Richard) Attenborough gave the famous curtain speech, ex-actly 50 years since he fi rst delivered it in London: “Now you have seen The Mousetrap, you are our partners in crime and we ask you to preserve the tradition, by keeping the secret of whodunit locked in your hearts.”
Agatha Christie became a Dame of the British Empire in 1971. Her books have sold billions of copies around the world, many more than any other author, except Shakespeare and The
Bible. She died on January 12, 1976, aged 85. At one point, she had three plays running at the same time in the West End, a feat never matched by any other woman. She was as suc-cessful a playwright as she was a nov-elist. Her most famous characters are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
A classic. A landmark. A legend. The Mousetrap has four entries in
the Guinness Book of Records, in-cluding: the ‘longest continuous run of any show in the world’, ‘most du-rable’ actor (David Raven, who played Major Metcalf for 4,575 performances from 22nd July 1957 until 23rd No-vember 1968) and ‘longest serving understudy’ (Nancy Seabrooke, who stood by, as Mrs Boyle, 6,240 times, until March 12, 1994, and actually did so 72 times).
Don't miss your chance to enjoy this masterpiece locally. For booking enquiries, contact The Capitol Box Offi ce.

Youth Award winner exhibits FACESThe Capitol in Horsham is currently exhibiting the remarkable work, FACES, of talented, young artist, Conor Weedon.
Having won a West Sussex County Times Youth Award for Creative Arts last year, he was soon after featured in ETC magazine and is delighted to have the opportunity to showcase his work in The Capitol’s gallery this summer.
Conor is attracted by the precise na-ture of portrait work, where all of the detail has to be so accurate, in order for the subject to remain recognis-able. His favourite style of drawing is photo-realistic minimalism, where, once certain features are drawn, one’s mind can complete the remainder of the picture.
Of his work and its beginnings, Conor said: “I started drawing faces in secondary school as part of a GCSE art project, and when I left college in or-der to pursue a career in art, portraits were the thing that I enjoyed drawing the most, and had been most suc-cessful at.”
Conor’s work was recognised by a Seattle-based media company, for whom he made a poster of a live-ac-tion trailer for a popular horror game. Inspired, he is now working through some diff erent styles to help develop his own, which he will be posting on his Facebook profi le (Conor Weedon) and Facebook page (CWArtist).
The FACES exhibition will run at The Capitol until September 13. Artworks range from £100 - £700, with prints available soon, through Conor’s online store at conorweedon.bigcatel.com

Cranleigh Leisure Centre to host ZOGGS Oceans of Fun DayTop Olympic athletes to attend one of nationwide series of events
Leading Australian swimwear brand, Zoggs, is continuing its campaign to encourage and in-spire more children to actively get involved in aquatic sports.
The brand has teamed up with Total Swimming, set up by Olym-pian Steve Parry, to run another series of events across the country providing up to 150 FREE spaces (at each event) for kids, aged 7 to 14 years old, to experience diff er-ent aquatic sports, including mini water polo, synchronised swim-ming and fast swimming.
Cranleigh Leisure Centre is de-lighted to announce that it will be hosting one of these exclusive events on September 20, 1.30 – 4.30pm, which will be attended by Olympic/Commonwealth ath-letes, Adam Whitehead (Lead athlete/Presenter, Fast Swimmer, Olympian, European & Common-wealth Champion), Rosie Morris
(Water Polo Player, 2012 Olympi-an, GB Women’s Team Goalkeep-er) and Katie Skelton (Synchro-nised Swimmer, 2012 Olympian Team GB).
The event will feature an after-noon of skills and games across the diff erent aquatic disciplines: Fast swimming, Synchro swim-ming, Mini Water Polo, Rookie
Lifeguard & CPR (poolside). Eve-ry participant will be given the chance to try each of the activi-ties, by rotating through the sta-tions.
Each station will be led by an Olympic or Commonwealth ath-lete, an expert in the discipline, who will provide instruction and encourage the children.
The athletes will be introduced at the beginning of the event and the children (and their families) will have the opportunity to meet the Olympians outside of the pool for autographs, photos and the showing of Olympic and Com-monwealth medals.
Steve Parry said: “We are really excited to have teamed up with Zoggs to run this series of Zoggs Oceans of Fun Days. Zoggs is a swim brand with a real passion for swimming and, by using role models in the form of Olympic and Commonwealth athletes, we hope to inspire, motivate and ed-ucate young people who will have the chance to come along and take part in these events for free.

PIZZA EXPRESS
Pizza Express is celebrating the launch of its exciting new look restaurant in Horsham. Located in East Street, this restaurant has been totally transformed and features artwork paying tribute to Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the major Romantic poets, who was born in Horsham. Each PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed
– often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The interior of the Horsham restaurant has a range of collage artworks inspired by Shelley’s poetry and his story. The artworks combine pieces of text and imagery that give a contemporary interpretation of his work.

STEAMER TRADING
The illustrious history of our Horsham store dates back to 1925, when Messrs. Scott & Sargeant opened their premises at 26 East Street. The business ourished and grew and allowed the shop to take over the adjoining property. In 2004, nearly 80 years later, Scott & Sargeant became a Steamer Trading shop when the owners
decided to retire. When we had nished the shop had grown into no.28, next door, and acquired wonderful new spaces for displaying fabulous kitchenware – and even a café. Today, our Horsham store is a real emporium, with a fantastic selection of everything for the kitchen and table spread out over 7,000 sq.ft.

Hamptons heralds sponsorship of The Festival of British Eventing a success
Leading residential agent, Hamptons International, was delighted to sponsor the Fes-tival of British Eventing, at Gatcombe Park, in what marks its 12th year of supporting this special equestrian event.
The weekend commenced with a VIP lunch, hosted by Hamptons International on Friday, August 7. Guests were welcomed by Pe-ter Phillips, who provided a fas-cinating insight into the back-ground of the festival, changes for 2015 and an overview of the cross country course, designed by his father, Captain Mark Phil-lips.
At lunch, guests were invited to take part in a Q&A session with one of Britain’s leading event riders, Harry Meade. In addition to talking through his career highs and lows of the past year, Harry shed light on his top tips for fi nding the right eques-trian property.
Following lunch, Harry led guests around the cross country course, talking them through the skill and technique required to master championship jumps and fences.
A hospitality stand, manned by experts from Hamptons Inter-national’s dedicated equestrian department, was at the event throughout the weekend. Visi-tors had the opportunity to learn more about owning an eques-trian property and see some of the best examples currently on the market. While for younger visitors, there was face painting and colouring activities to take part in.
Over the weekend, the estate agency also ran a competition in aid of their corporate char-ity, Cancer Research UK, which off ered the chance to win a day accompanying Harry Meade, and his team, at an event.
Andrew Marshall, Senior Re-gional Sales Director at Hamp-tons International, commented: “The Festival of British Event-ing at Gatcombe Park is always a highly anticipated date in the Hamptons International calen-dar and we were thrilled to sup-port the event once again in 2015. We were delighted to entertain our existing clients, as well as meet new faces and welcome members of equestrian commu-nities from both near and far.”

A perfect match at Woodland Place, BillingshurstIt seems Rydon Homes have found their perfect marketing partner, as they join forces with estate agents Fowlers for their new development of Woodland Place in Billingshurst.
This unique collection of two, three, four and five bedroom qual-ity homes has seen huge success with 25% of the homes reserving off-plan in short succession.
Nestling in ancient woodland, the development has seen unprec-edented interest due its position on the edge of desirable Billingshurst and the design of the homes them-selves, which can claim an irresist-ible mix of traditional architecture set against airy and contemporary interiors.
Fowlers estate agents have been appointed by Rydon to market the homes.
Stephanie Briggs for Rydon Homes comments: “We decided to bring Fowlers on board to market Woodland Place for their in-depth knowledge both of the local area and purchaser requirements. This has been borne out by the fantastic sales success we have experienced, with local purchasers responding very positively to this fantastic de-velopment.”
Keith Hutchinson of Fowlers in Billingshurst concurs; “We were delighted to have been appointed by Rydon Homes and have this op-portunity to work at such a charm-ing development, which Woodland Place really is. Given the inter-est we have already experienced I would strongly advise potential
buyers to contact us at the earliest opportunity to find out more in-formation and secure the home of their choice.“
Woodland Place is just a five-minute walk from the mainline station with direct connections into London Victoria.
Yet despite its accessibility, it is perfectly placed to enjoy its rural environ with the South Downs Na-tional Park and a host of country-side pursuits on the doorstep.
Built for the needs of modern living, each of the homes is well proportioned with generous living spaces. The properties also benefit from fully-fitted designer kitchens and opulent bathrooms and offer private parking and generous gar-dens.

Parkrun’s elephant makes an appearance in Horsham ParkAthleticsDave Smith – Sports Editor
Last week saw the "Beat the tide" 10k race in Worthing, run along the beach. Horsham Joggers sent a har-dy team of 8 who managed to keep dry!
Mal Thornton finished 6th out of a field of 266 in a time of 40.55 followed by Lorraine Treadwell 47.26 Penny Barron 54.16 Richard Barron 1.00.33
Lorraine Hunter 1.04.23 Amanda Avery 1.08.03 Paul Chandler 1.08.16 Fiona Lear 1.08.38.
Last Sunday a large turnout com-peted in the Henfield half marathon in a field of 200. Mark Greet lead the Joggers’ home in 1.27.56 followed by Matthew Mason 1.29.03 Paul Oakley 1.36.30 Chris Wigby 1.38.02 John Dy-ckes 1.40.51 Paul Yokom 1.44.15 Lor-raine Treadwell 1.46.01 Philip Daly 1.51.32 Jane Lawrence 1.54.40 Geilies

Last Saturday’s Horsham parkrun was again well attended and run in what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far. The Horsham parkrun elephant - a part of Hor-sham Rotary Club’s ‘Elephantastic’
trail - made an appearance at the run after ‘escaping’ from his home in the District Post office window. Hannah Millar, who decorated the parkrun elephant, said she hoped he makes parkrun some money so the event can grow and continue to improve.
Horsham parkrun is open to all abilities. To register and for more information see their web site www.parkrun.org.uk/horsham or Face-book page - Horsham parkrun. Last weekend’s parkrun start

Horsham Rugby Club ready for new campaignRugbyRichard Ordidge – Horsham RUFC
Horsham Rugby Club has now al-most completed their 2015/16 pre-season following promotion to London South East Division 2. Horsham’s second XV, known as the Lions, have also been promot-ed to Sussex Division 1.
Last years coaching team remains in place headed by Nick Stocker, as-sisted by forwards coach Barry Hil-licks and backs coach Richard Bell.
Stocker said: “Training has been well attended and in pre-season we have concentrated on both in-dividual skills and team cohesion and the players have responded well. We will have added strength in depth from a combination of ei-ther players returning to the club, or joining for the fi rst time hav-ing played higher league rugby. We
have retained the players we had and also hope to add still further to the squad over the next few weeks.”
Pre season games have been ar-ranged over the next few weeks away to Dorking 2nd XV on August 29 and then at home to Cobham on September 5. The fi rst competi-tive match is at home to Ashford on September 12 in the fi rst round of the Intermediate Cup, and then league action commences on Sep-tember 19 away to Tunbridge Wells who are one of the promotion fa-vourites.
Stocker added: “There is a real momentum about the club at the moment. We are an ambitious club and the new faces coupled with the excitement of the top two sides playing in higher leagues mirrors the positive environment off the fi eld, and we look well placed for a memorable season.”Last year’s London SE 3 champions, Horsham
Pulborough fi ght to keep hopes of promotion alive
BowlsJane Gray – Pulborough BC
The week started with Pulbor-ough playing host to the Sussex Vice Presidents, a team made up of players from many diff erent Clubs that play together several times a week.
6 rinks played in glorious condi-tions on a Pulborough green that many said "has never played bet-ter", which is a credit to green keep-er, Chris Etherington.
Of the six teams for Pulborough, 3 were victorious. Top rink for Pul-borough went to Skip, Chris Ether-ington, with lead, Mike Richards, number 2, Fred Bushby and number 3, Jan Barnes, with 14 ends out of 21 and an impressive score of 26/8. The fi nal result went to the Sussex VP's by just 8 shots, 112/104.
The fi nal game for Pulborough in the West Sussex Bowls League for 2015 was away against Marine Gar-dens in scorching temperatures.
Pulborough needed a good result to help secure the league title for the year and started well with Pulbor-ough ahead on all 4 rinks by halfway. Len Adsett and team had a tough game, with the lead changing mul-tiple times and 6 shots against them in the last 4 ends sealing their fate. Skip, John Brown and team, fought back from 18/12 down on end 16 to draw 19/19.
Matt Ives and his team scored steadily in the second half of their game, achieving two 4's and a 5 on end 15, to squash any hopes their op-ponents had of a comeback to fi nish 30 shots to 12. Top rink, with an even stronger score of 33/13, was Skip and Club Captain Paul Day and team, helping to secure 7 vital League points for Pulborough and keep their hopes of promotion to Division 2 on track. Pulborough head the table but can still be caught by Tarring Priory who will have to score heavily in the match they have in hand to overhaul Pulborough.
Pulborough have a nervous wait to see if they are champions
Storrington remain mid-table after win
BowlsJohn Wharmby – Storrington
At the start of the weekend, Stor-rington had a friendly match at home against Worthing Pavilion, which resulted in a two game win for both clubs.
Brian Bona’s team lagged behind for most of the game but took a lucky
6 shot win, 3 ends from the fi nish, to win the game by 3 shots. Similarly Alan Head’s team were behind by one shot when a 4 shot win, again 3 ends from the fi nish, resulted in a one shot win for the game. The Wor-thing Pavilion wins by 3 shots and 19 shots resulted in a match loss for Storrington, by 18 shots.

Billingshurst visited Horsham Park for their last evening match of the season and got off to a solid start; after 9 of the scheduled 18 ends they were 6 shots in front.
The second half saw the visitors
accelerate nearly out of sight to win by 42 shots. Top rink for Billing-shurst went to June Bennett, Stan Morgan & Grace Stewart (+25) who just edged out Tessa Richards, John Bennett & Geoff Weller (+24).

match, away at Wittering. Rain in the morning had left the green soft and slow but in the afternoon it took on a faster pace. Most of the Stor-rington players found this to their liking, as demonstrated by Howard White’s team pulling ahead to fi nish 31 – 13.
Paul Leatherbarrow’s team were 0 - 9 down before they settled down to pile on the shots to fi nish with a win by 9 shots. A similar scenario occurred on Peter Newman’s rink, being 0 - 9 down. Their come-back was less pronounced, but a single shot win on the last end gave them a draw of 19 -19. The fourth team, skippered by David Ogley, found the opposition evenly matched, with the score being equal two ends from the fi nish. However the Wittering team achieved a single shot win on both ends, to put Storrington 20 – 22 down.

Double win at Snetterton closes Palmer in on F4 titleMotor SportDave Smith – Sports Editor
Southwater’s Will Palmer took a big step towards claiming the Duo BRDC Formula 4 title with two vic-tories at Snetterton last weekend, his third double win of the year.
The 18-year-old now leads Maid-stone’s Tom Jackson in the champi-onship standings by 74 points, with just six races left in the 2015 season.
After a superb qualifying session Palmer started in pole position in race one and quickly built on his ad-vantage to lead by 5.405s by the mid-way point, eventually coming home 8.163s ahead of team-mate Harri Newey with Jackson fi nishing third.
Starting eighth in race two by vir-tue of his victory in the fi rst Palmer quickly made up ground into second place. In the battle for the lead Chris Mealin shut the door under brak-ing and contact was made breaking Palmer’s rear suspension and forc-ing him into retirement. After the race, Mealin was excluded from the results for driving in a manner in-compatible with safety for the two incidents.
In the fi nal race of the weekend Palmer was again back in pole but was beaten away by Jackson before overtaking him at the end of lap one and then pulling steadily away even-tually winning by 11.143s to secure his double victory.
Speaking on the podium Will said: "After the disappointment of race two, I wanted to bounce back in style and it was good to be able to take back the lead having lost it off the start. After that, I just wanted to lower the lap record as much as I could. It's a nice record to have as no-one will be able to better that now as the series moves to the new car in November.”
With 190 points still on off er with two rounds of the season remaining, Will leads Tom Jackson by 74 points with his HHC Motorsport team-mate Harri Newey now in third, 29 points further adrift.
2015 Duo BRDC Formula 4 Cham-pionship standings after race 18 of 24

Horsham Cricket club saddened by the passing of secretary KarenCricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter
Horsham Cricket Club is shocked and saddened by the sudden un-timely passing of their popular long term Secretary Karen Marshall.
At the club’s special lunch com-memorating Horsham winning the National Knock Out Cup at Lord’s, Chairman John Carter called for two
minutes silence, allowing members to refl ect on all that Karen has done for the club, saying: “Karen was here on Tuesday for our committee meet-ing and would have been with us to-day – this is an absolute tragedy.” President Hugh Thomas said: “This is very sad news for us to start the day but Karen would have wanted us to carry on with the event. I am so sorry that she has been taken from us.” In
his subsequent message to Horsham Cricket Club members John Carter added: “Karen will be greatly missed – I knew her for nearly 40 years: she was just lovely, a wonderful person, generous of spirit and a benefactor to the club.
Karen leaves her husband Howard and two children. Our deepest sym-pathies go them in this most diffi -cult of times.”
14 year old Adam hits 178 not outCricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter
Last Saturday on Horsham Cricket Club’s John Dew ground 14 year old Tanbridge schoolboy Adam Goacher notched up a highly impressive ca-reer best score – 178 not out.
Opening the batting for Hor-sham’s fourth team in the 40 over adult league match against their Ifi eld counterparts, stroke-maker Adam hit 34 fours in Horsham’s 313-4, the next highest scorer getting 26. Adam’s feat demoralised Ifi eld - they stuttered to 101 all out.
Speaking to the District Post Adam said: “When I was dropped on 50 I thought it must be my lucky day, so I made sure I capitalised!”
Umpire David Horsman told us: “This special innings called for a high degree of concentration from a 14 year old.” Coincidentally, Adam’s father Tom Hogsfl esh was the other umpire and he added: “This was the high-est score by any Horsham player this season so naturally the family are very proud of Adam’s achievement but he was fairly quiet about it, just celebrat-ing with a tea in the clubhouse. Two years ago he got a hundred against Crawley in an U12 match and then he warmed up for this one with a memo-rable ton at Scaynes Hill in June!”

Roff ey steamroller back to top the tableSunday August 23 - Sussex Premier LeagueSussex Development XI 135 All Out (35.2 overs) Roff ey 139-3 (24.1) Roff ey won by 7 wickets
CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter
Roff ey’s resounding victory over the Sussex Development XI crowned an excellent weekend, during which they racked up 60 points, taking them four clear in their bid to win back to back titles.
The weather relented with the De-velopment XI batting fi rst in search of their fi rst win of the season, but they were soon in all too familiar trouble at 28-3. A hesitant recovery ensued but seven batsmen could only amass 20 runs between them as, despite some late order resistance, the in-nings staggered to 135 all out – at least 100 short of an appropri-ate target. Leigh Harrison and Rohit Jagota took two wickets apiece while Alex Collins with 4-21 proved particularly de-structive.
With 48 overs avail-able Rof-fey started positively until three e x c e l l e n t close catches reduced them to 54-3. But this was just a minor in-convenience, Us-man Khan (58) and Rohit (21) batting through without fur-ther mishap, secur-ing victory with only half of the overs used. The Development XI’s poor showing is
mystifying. Their line up at Roff ey in-cluded Sussex second XI regulars, Sa-kande and Grant looking sharp when they opened the attack, backed by im-pressive fi elding. But their promising batsmen, including Philip Salt, who recently made his debut for the county fi rst team, have consistently failed to score enough runs.
After praising the umpires and Sus-sex coaches for starting a full game quickly after the rain, Roff ey captain Josh Fleming said: “It was a bit dis-appointing that they scored quite so many after we had them 76-8, I was hoping that we’d get them out for 100! But as they were 70-3 I’m not com-
plaining. We’ve played really well this weekend, though
and the league’s in our hands now.” With 60 more points up for grabs Roff ey have 411,
East Grinstead 407 and Preston Nomads, too far
adrift barring catastrophe elsewhere, on 363.

Billingshurst overwhelmed at FulkingSaturday August 22 - Sussex Premier LeaguePreston Nomads 261-6 (58 overs) Billingshurst 134 All Out (38.2 overs) Preston Nomads won by 127 runs
CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter
Needing points to secure survival in the Premier League Billingshurst had too challenging an assignment vis-iting perennial champions Preston Nomads.
Hurst’s task was all the harder be-cause they were without Chris Lid-dle away playing for Sussex and ris-ing forces Will Fazackerley and Tom
Nightingale on duty with Guernsey in an international tournament. And, Andy Barr was still unable to bowl be-cause of an unhealed side injury. De-prived of these key resources, Hurst were overwhelmed by Nomads in a one sided aff air.
Yet, Abidine Sakande took an early Nomads wicket and at 62-3 and 149-4 there was hope of containing the hosts. But, 53 from Aaron Phillips – ended by a deadeye Shane West run out - and an unbeaten century from Stuart Faith, hitting a last ball maxi-mum to reach the milestone, enabled Nomads to reach 261-6 after Tim Mo-ses had hit a huge six, the biggest any-one at the ground could remember.
For Billingshurst Jay Hartard rode
out some body blows, his 76 including 13 fours and a six, but only two team mates reached double fi gures. Ever-green Carl Simons took 5-51, carrying his seasonal wicket tally to 60. In a tightly bunched lower half of the table Billingshurst with 257 points remain sixth and entertain leaders Roff ey to-morrow (Saturday August 29) before visiting struggling Cuckfi eld for the fi nal game of the season on Septem-ber 5. Hurst captain Ben Williams said: “Nomads are a good side and were better than us; it’s as simple as that. We’ve got a tough last two games – Cuckfi eld are pushing to stay up, too.”

Saturday August 22 - Sussex Premier LeagueHorsham 176 All Out (54.5 overs) Roff ey 178-6 (39.2 overs) Roff ey won by 4 wickets
Roff ey ended a run of three con-secutive defeats by Horsham with a convincing win after their near neighbours had been bowled out for a below par 176.
Put in to bat Horsham set a promis-ing platform with Will Beer (57) again in the runs against Roff ey and bat-ting watchfully well, but once he was dismissed other batsmen were un-able to make suffi cient progress after reaching double fi gures. In hot con-
ditions George Fleming took 2-54 in 18 overs from the clubhouse end, but Ben Manenti earned the bowling hon-ours with 6-33, including the last fi ve wickets following Kevin Stoute’s run out, Horsham subsiding from 135-4.
When Roff ey replied, Mike Nor-ris with 53 renewed his liking for the Horsham bowling. Michael Munday, regularly a heavy wicket taker in this fi xture, had to be content with 1-57 this time. And, despite Will Beer’s 3-29 triggering a mid innings wob-ble Roff ey recovered from 92-5 to win comfortably enough with 15 overs to spare, Dan Smith’s six fi nishing the job after wicketkeeper Matt Davies hit eight fours in his unbeaten 43.
Horsham captain James Johnson told the District Post: “It was a good toss to win - the wicket got a bit eas-ier and if we’d got 230 we might have been able to create some pressure”. Roff ey skipper Josh Fleming said: “We
did what we’re often good at; keeping batsmen quiet. We managed to bot-tle up Will Beer and just when he was looking to accelerate a wicket would go at the other end.” Josh’s brother George added: “Horsham were going along nicely but Beero was the key and once we got him out they were lured into some soft dismissals - Ben (Ma-nenti) bowled really well.” Ben told us: “The wicket wasn’t doing a huge amount, just straightening a bit, al-though it turned more when I was bowling to the left handers.”
Tomorrow (Saturday August 29) in the penultimate round of matches in this year’s Sussex Premier League Roff ey visit Billingshurst, while Hor-sham stage their fi nal home game – against Cuckfi eld - both encounters starting at 11.30.

Both teams with organiser Paul Baker (blue shirt) at the commemo-rative match
such a very pleasant day’. The sun came out as the Invitation
XI posted 172-6, Kashim Ibrahim re-tiring with 76 despite Chris Baker turning back the clock with a thrust-ing 3-33. In response Howard Kasey showed no signs of not playing for seven years when he creamed his sec-ond ball for four through the covers on his way to 38. His opening partner Craig Gallagher made an enterpris-ing 31 and, although Harry Finch took 3-46, Michael Thornely made 62 be-fore the 2005 XI won with a six off the last available ball.
Paul Baker said: “We’ve had a fabu-lous day – there were 70 at the lunch and then we were entertained to a last ball thriller! It was great to share the club’s big day with so many famil-iar friendly faces but at the moment there are no plans to repeat the match in 2025!”

Heath’s opening home fi xture ends in defeat
Saturday August 22 - SCFL Pre-mier DivisionBroadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Lancing
FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor
Broadbridge Heath fi rst home match of the season saw the vis-it of this seasons initial surprise package, Lancing. Heath were missing a number of players but were able to start Martyn Flack for his fi rst appearance of the season.
The fi rst meaningful eff ort of the game came from Heath’s Rob Godfrey, who shot just wide from long range while at the other end Lancing’s Will Berry had a shot de-fl ected wide. The deadlock was bro-ken on 37 minutes when visiting full back George Fenton forced his way - with the help of a few lucky breaks - past three Heath defend-ers and into the penalty area from where he produced a superb drive into the bottom corner of ‘keeper Chester’s goal.
Heath had a chance to equalise just before the break but after a
good run Merv Bhujun was denied by the Lancing keeper Callum Fidler who raced out quickly to claim the ball and keep the visitors 1-0 lead at half time.
Lancing added a second 10 min-utes into the restart when Josh Spinks converted a corner at the near post. In the heat of the year’s hottest day and with a two goal lead Lancing were now content to sit back and allow ‘Heath to do all the attacking work.
Substitute Scott Weller came on to make his debut and in the 68th minute got himself on the score sheet by nipping in to head over Lancing ‘keeper Fidler’s and reduce the defi cit. Despite the goal Lanc-ing remained happy to allow ‘Heath to make all the play but the hosts were unable to add to the score and Lancing notched up their third straight win and maintain their 100% record.

Hornets hit fi ve to live up to their billing
Saturday August 22 - SCFL Premier DivisionBroadbridge Heath 1 - 2 Lancing
Horsham went some way to justify-ing their tag of being favourites for the league title with this convincing win over Shoreham.
The fi nal 5-0 score line was the Hornets biggest win for eight years and in truth could have been double fi gures if not for some decent saves from the visiting keeper Taylor, some erratic fi nishing and the energy sap-ping blistering heat. In addition the visitors Dimitri Larin did not help his
teams cause after getting sent off after twenty-eight minutes.
To punish Larin further the foul that earned him his red card led to the opening goal for Horsham as Kieron Pamment’s free-kick wrong footed Shoreham keeper Taylor as it took a de-fl ection in the wall to end up in the net.
Horsham were unlucky to not double the advantage when Darren Boswell’s shot hit a post and then Boswell saw his follow up from the re-bound also crash off an upright.
Taylor in the visitors’ goal faced with an onslaught did his best to keep his side in the game, pulling off a number of good stops. The keeper was eventually beaten for the second time three minutes before the break when, after he had saved well from Pam-mant, Boswell hit a half-volley past the overworked ‘keeper to take Hor-sham in two up at the break.
It took only four minutes of the re-start for Horsham to increase their lead. Murfi n made a good break deep into the Shoreham half before cross-ing to give Pamment a tap in from close range. Murfi n, who is yet to open his goal scoring account for the Hor-nets, had a penalty for handball saved by Taylor, leaving him to still break his duck. The relief for the visitors was short lived however as two minutes later it was four when an unmarked Ashley Jones tapped in. Substitute Jake Chadwick wrapped things up fi ve minutes after coming on with a nicely taken fi nish to lift the Hornets up to fourth in the table and to complete a hat-trick of wins on the bounce.

YM held to goalless drawSaturday August 22 - SCFL Pre-mier DivisionNewhaven 0 – 0 Horsham YMCA
FootballTom Norris
Horsham YMCA manager Peter Buckland was left evidently disap-pointed after his side drew 0-0 away at Newhaven last Saturday.
A disheartened YM boss comment-ed: “I’m very disappointed. I said to the players that they weren’t going to score. The worst case scenario is 0-0. To be honest though, that’s not good enough. We should have put them to the sword.”
The fi rst half was an even encounter and although YM started sluggishly, they slowly improved. Dean Wright fi red straight at Dockers’ goalkeeper Jake Buss and then somehow headed
over from close range at the far post shortly after.
Newhaven striker Callum Connor’s attempted lob was thwarted by on-rushing YM stopper Simon Lockwood, before visitors’ forward Wright’s low drive forced a smart stop from Buss.
After the break, Connor watched an eff ort from the edge parried to safety, whilst at the other end Wright and Anthony Hibbert both had tame ef-forts blocked on the line.
A cluster of Newhaven chances then followed as a Walton free kick was pushed away, a Robinson shot looped dangerously into the air inside the box and Connor was again denied by YM ‘keeper Lockwood as his low strike was sharply saved.
The fi nal quarter of the game be-longed to the visitors, who squan-dered several superb chances to se-cure all three points.
Heath trounced at PaghamTuesday August 25 - SCFL Premier DivisionPagham 4 – 0 Broadbridge Heath
FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor
Broadbridge Heath’s slow start to the season continued on Tuesday even-ing as they shipped four goals away at Pagham.
Dan Kempson gave the hosts the lead fi ve minutes before the break; a lead they held to take in at half time.
Eleven minutes into the restart Rob Brown doubled Pagham’s advantage leaving ‘Heath with a mountain to climb. The visitors had any hopes of a comeback dashed on 64 minutes when Dan Simmonds made it three before he put the game completely out of reach by adding his second and his team’s fourth on 75 minutes.
After the game, Painter praised the Pagham team saying they look a much better team than last season but he was very disappointed with his own team saying this was probably the worst performance since he’s been at the club. “We’ve had teams where the players have far less ability but they gave you more eff ort” he added.“The players performance tonight has made Saturday’s team selection much easier for him, with six senior players coming back into the side there’s nobody apart from the Chester’s and Weller who could argue about not starting.”
Broadbridge Heath’s only win so far was against winless Wick & Barnham so with the cup match tomorrow, (Sat-urday August 29) against East Preston, Heath’s next league match will be at home to Horsham YMCA on Tuesday evening when they will be looking to get their league campaign up and running.
Preston at Gorings Mead.Visitors’ front man Alfi e Gritt, who
also netted a hat-trick for his side on the night, broke the deadlock against the run of play after just seven min-utes. YM responded immediately with two goals in quick succession from Liam Hunter and Sullivan, be-fore Ryan Hallett’s swerving twen-ty-fi ve yard strike restored parity to make it 2-2 at the break.
The home side fl ew out of the blocks after the restart as Sullivan restored YM’s lead after just forty seconds and Matt Crane then made it 4-2 with only eleven second half minutes played. Sullivan completed his hat-trick shortly after and the home side looked in command, but a resilient Preston mounted a com-pelling comeback and two quick fi re goals from Gritt, the fi rst from the penalty spot, ensured a nervous fi nal twenty minutes for the hosts.
YM manager Peter Buckland com-
mented: “That was hard work. I was really impressed with East Preston. I know they’ve played four games for no points, but they keep losing by the odd goal. They never laid down tonight. It goes 5-3, 5-4 and then you’ve got a nail biting last ten min-utes. I imagine for the neutral that it was a cracking game to watch, but it’s not the sort of game as a manager that you can honestly say that you enjoyed. It is three points at the end of the day and the good start rolls on. It still reads that we’ve played four league games, won three and drawn one, so we’re unbeaten and of course we’ve got the FA Cup to come. We can go into Sunday now a bit more relaxed.”
YM Team: Lockwood, Carden (Do-herty 78), Gathern, Crane, Evans, Hunter (Wright 57), Dugdale (Gedling 63), D. Sullivan, Hibbert, D. Brown, Schaaf. Unused subs: J. Brown, H. Horner.
