Objective for this session Two priority participation programs Outline the rationale and benefits of Tackers and Sailability Point to the resources available for clubs wanting to attract new participants relative to these target audiencesEven if you do not adopt them understand them

Good timing New Clubs for Tackers for 2013-14 need to sign up by winterThe Sailability Conference in ACT in March

Tackers and Sailability Both sit within the Discover Sailing Program Both have ASC Funding until June 2014 for developmentTackers for juniors 7 to12 yo at primary school Not 12 + yo at secondary school Sailability Inclusion of people with a disability in all normal activities at clubs Not a standalone activity

Why Tackers ?Clubs said attracting juniors was the highest priority The gemba Report said the same If you have not engaged kids by age 12yo, as a sport you are going to find it hard from then on Most people who sail or boat later in life had a good experience as a kid (US Research) There are currently less than 10,000 registered members of yacht clubs under 20 yo and only 120 clubs have more than 20 people under 20 yo Sailing competes against over 90 recognised sports and unlimited other entertainment options for kids Kids become youth to be retained and comes with families

The Lifetime value of a TackerSay a junior has a great time as a Tacker and continues as a life time sailor, even with 10 yrs off at 17-27yo Start Age 7 say they stop sailing at 67 -10 = 50 yearsBased on club membership fees, storage, bar and hospitality expenditure at the club of conservatively $1000 pa = $50,000Plus what their family and friends might spend if visiting or engaged with the club Plus say $1000 pa on boats and bits and gear (if crew only) so maybe another $50,000In excess of $100,000 lifetime value to sailingconservatively

Whats different about Tackers Australia wide all states running it For clubs big and smallIts more similar to other sports junior programs than traditional sailing programs for primary age kidsIts based on eight fundamental values or principles e.g.Kid centric fun, Branding, Consistency Results retention and attraction of families Attracting funding support Federal & States GovernmentCommercial e.g. Whitworths Donors Buoyed UpLocal community for boats

Why Sailability ?Around 20% of the Australian population has a disabilitySailing has a unique competitive position against many other sports in enabling particiapation Sailability is an existing program with enormous further potential Clubs can really benefit from the inclusion that a Sailability program brings Image / message Funding People and volunteers

Whats different about Sailability Hopefully not too much Its about modifications to what you now do to include people of all abilities It offers some opportunities for funding Donations Grants
