What is a Maturity

Model?

Capability Maturity Model – Purpose and Origin

Hand stacking cubic blocks

in five stacks ranging in height from 1 to 5 cubes

high.

• Method to evaluate and measuring relative:

– Maturity of software development processes

– Capabilities of an organization in addressing a specific set of business challenges

• Originally developed by CMU SEI

– Global standard used in over 101 countries

– 25+ years work carried by CMMI Institute

14

Capability Maturity Model – 5 Structured Levels

Set of structured levels that describe how well behaviors, practices and processes of an organization can reliably and sustainably produce required outcomes.

• Level 1: Initial (Chaotic)

• Level 2: Managed (Repeatable)

• Level 3: Defined (Standard)

• Level 4: Quantitatively Managed

• Level 5: Optimizing

Maturity Models Are Not Roadmaps

16

What are Benefits of Advancing Org Maturity?

• Fewer Defects

– Orgs at Level 1 have twice as many defects as orgs at Level 31

• Better on-time delivery

– Orgs at Level 1 deliver on time 40% of the time, as opposed to orgs at Level 3 which deliver on time 80 % of the time2

• More likely to be on budget

– Orgs at Level 1 deliver on budget 41 % of the time, as opposed to orgs at Level 3 which deliver on time 73 % of the time3

• Increased Quality Software Management Productivity Index

– The Quality Software Management Productivity Index progressively increases, as CMM level increases4

Digital Accessibility Maturity Model™ - Overview

• Digital Accessibility Maturity Model™ (DAMM™):

– Model developed by SSB BART Group

– Help companies assess digital accessibility program maturity along a series of dimensions and aspects

– Can be used across all industries and types of organizations

• DAMM™ leverages successful practices and is aligned to maturity-model based approaches:

– Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) original work in Capability Maturity Models (CMM)

– Business Disability Forum’s Accessibility Maturity Model

– NASCIO Policy-Driven Adoption for Accessibility
