• The dictionary definition of a carbon footprint is “the amount of carbon dioxide
released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual,
organization or community.*
• The amount of carbon emissions trapped in our atmosphere causes global warming,
perhaps also contributing to climate change. **
• Consequences of this include: melting of glaciers, rise in sea levels, the disturbance
of animals’ natural habitats, extreme weather events, and other negative side effects
that are dangerous to the planet, to human and animal life, and to our future.**
• We have seen a tremendous increase in carbon emissions in the past due to our regular
activities such as irresponsible use of plastic, non-reusable products, and many more which
directly or indirectly lead to carbon emissions. An eco-friendly switch to lifestyle can help
make a difference, while also helping in reducing carbon footprint.
• Besides others, there are few simple changes in daily life which can help you in reducing carbon footprints. These are:*
• Responsible travelling: One of the easiest ways to reduce carbon footprint is through driving efficiently, or doing it less. Carpooling and opting for public transport is also an effective way to shrink carbon footprint.
• Smart Lighting: Conserving energy, adopting energy efficient bulbs and electrical devices can help in reducing carbon emissions.
• Go Green: Practicing tree plantation can help in air purification while also reducing the heat effect. Having your own kitchen garden can serve the dual purpose of providing fresh air while also providing you with fresh farm produce.
• Practice ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’: Reduce dependency on environmentally hazardous products like plastic and inculcate the habit of reusing and recycling old plastic bottles, plastic bags, and so on. Purchasing upcycled or recycled products is also a better way to cut carbon footprints.
