President’s LetterAt our 149th AGM last month in addition to electing me your new President and John McElhinney Vice President, we also confirmed the Committee as follows: Stephen Leavy, Dr Arthur Morris, Hon. Justice Paul Davison, Craig Ganley JP, Jacqui Bensemann, Andrew Christie, Fletcher Pilditch, Monique Cairns andHamish Edgar.

Our Committee has an excellent cross section of skills, age and ability; we are all committed to creating a strong and happy Club. I’ve valued the support and encouragement of Trustees and the Committee as Vice President and look forward to leading the Club for the next

two years. I am pleased to introduce two new Committee members, Monique Cairns and Hamish Edgar. Monique is an emerging independent director on the Lotto, NZ Homes Loans and SPCA board. She runs a consultancy, working with businesses on strategy, marketing and communications Hamish manages a private funds management and private equity investment business in New Zealand. Before this he was based in London working as hedge fund portfolio manager. Hamish returned three years ago with his wife Victoria and two daughters.

Members may not know how hard Committee members work. Their commitment includes meeting at least twice a month and often sitting on other sub-committees like membership and finance to ensure the good health of the Club. There are no perks or benefits and most of the Committee spend many years serving the Club.

There are many reasons people join the Club, and one of the things Past Presidents have reinforced to the Committee over the years is that the Club should feel like a home away from home, where all members should feel comfortable.

To be a strong and healthy club means increasing the membership and attracting young members is especially important for our future. I am proud that both my sons who are under 30 have recently joined. I hope they get the pleasure that I know so many of you have in the years to come and develop the strong friendships that I enjoy and that I see others enjoying at the Club.

Another way we increase our membership is through introducing our friends to the Club. Some members maintain friendships through their membership, friendships from school, work and life, and that’s been one of the successes of the Northern Club. It’s one of the things that makes our Club feel like a family.

To be a strong and healthy Club also means creating reasons for members to visit. Last month we hosted 200 for a pre-match function before being coached to the All Blacks vs France game; 40 attended an extraordinary Winter Lecture with principal ballerina and Royal New Zealand Ballet Artistic Director Patricia Barker sharing her fascinating dancing career and vision for the ballet; 30 women members enjoyed lunch with TV3 journalist and AM host Amanda Gillies; 40 experienced a special wine tasting with the Alsace Trimbach family.

I spoke at the AGM that it was very important that all our Members feel that the Club is another home for them, meets their expectations and is a place to relax and enjoy good company, good food and wine. We are all committed to keeping the Club relevant, your views matter, so do keep in touch. Our management are always there for you and if you wish to reach me directly, my email is [email protected].

I look forward to meeting you all, and to those I don’t know, please introduce yourself - the more people we know, the more connected we feel, and the more we create a relaxed and friendly environment.

Warm wishes,

Victoria Carter ONZM

China: Where Will the New Silk Road Lead?Presented by Prof. Stephen Hoadley: Tuesday 31 JulyBeijing’s initiative to connect China to Europe is bold. It hasprovoked admiration for the finance it promises but alsoscepticism about the longer-term negative consequences for borrowers. It also appears to indirectly challenge the post-WWII role of the United States in Asia, with possible destabilisation of the hegemonic consensus that underpins Pacific rim prosperity. Professor Stephen Hoadley, an annual Northern Club speaker, will set the geo-political stage and sketch China’s role in it.

Le Quesnoy Museum: A Tribute to NZ TroopsPresented by Herb Farrant: Wednesday 8 AugustLe Quesnoy is a town of special significance in NZ’s military history. On 4 November 1918, 14,500 New Zealanders helped liberate the small town, saving the lives of its 3000 residents. Today, to recognise the service and sacrifice of this battle and the 85,000 New Zealanders who served with merit and distinction in two world wars, the NZ War Memorial Museum Trust has pur-chased an acre of Gendarmerie property in Le Quesnoy. Found-er General Secretary of the project, Herb Farrant will share the Trust’s ambitious and gallant mission to raise $15 million to bring the project to life which will include a museum of memorabil-ia and accommodation for family and descendants of the Kiwi soldiers who spilled their blood for France.
