WORKING FOR OUR TOWNThe Byford Progress Association is working on another quirky sculpture for the South Western Highway near Park Road, depicting a famous historical figure. In the 1930s, 40s and 50s, Charlie Knox was the local traffic inspector. He stood on the side of the highway for many hours writing down the registration numbers of any vehicle he considered to be speeding and usually convinced the magistrate in court that his judgement was correct! We have worked hard to raise $18,000 for this sculpture and will apply to council for $10,000 from the next round of Locality Funding which is available to all areas of the SJ Shire. Our main fund raising is through our Byford Bag Ladies and Lads roadside rubbish pick up team. The Shire pays $3 a bag, so when you see piles of orange bags on the road verges you know we have not only been cleaning up the approaches to the town but also raising money. Since our plan to enhance the safety and look of the Highway began in 2008, our campaign and $100,000 contribution has brought in more than $2.5 million from State and Federal funds. The SJ Shire Council worked with us and has contributed $90,000 Locality Funding over the last four years. The sculptures may not be everyone’s cup of tea but they have lifted our image, improved our property values and put us on the map as a street art destination. We did start with a long period of public consultation, identified several subjects that should be depicted and invited artists from all over WA to put forward their ideas of how these could be represented.Several Saturday mornings were then spent outside IGA displaying ideas and we settled on renowned international artist Len Zuks’ quirky figures. For those who haven’t taken a closer look at the plaques on the sculptures, the horse and jockey depicts the Byford horse that dead heated in the Perth Cup in 1919, the kangaroos are taken from a photo of two of our now departed ‘old men’ roos boxing, in what used to be called the kangaroo paddock opposite the Tavern. At the hall is a tribute to the servicemen who fought in two world wars and returned to live and work in Byford.Behind the hall is the War Memorial and Peace Memorial Wall, previous projects of the Association. The northern entry statement sculptures are a snapshot of our past and near Cardup Siding Road you will see the last old man kangaroo leaving Byford. We are working with Cedar Woods to create a piece commemorating the importance of the first State Brickworks which opened here in Byford in 1913.You can learn more about the Progress Association by phoning Colleen Rankin on 9525 1146 and Byford’s history from the Byford Historical Picture Books which are on sale at the Post Office. I know we all hear about how good exercise is for us. But let’s face it, we are all super busy and it’s really hard to prioritise our own fitness. It feels like everything or anything else is way more important! But is it?

Did you know that Heart Disease is the leading cause of deaths for Australians? Even more than cancer, and yes, even more than zombie attacks!

Staying active not only decreases the risk of heart disease, but it maintains the performance of your lungs and heart, and by increasing your strength, makes you less likely to become injured or feel “frail” as you become older!

Keeping fit helps you lose those love handles, keeps your body functioning properly, and can decrease your risk of stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure among other things.

So not only will exercise help you live longer, it will also increase the quality of those extra years you gain!

Another benefit that cannot be overlooked is the mental health side. There are very strong correlations between exercising and managing your depression and/or anxiety issues. And as we have already established, we’re really busy these days and most peoples stress levels are through the roof.

A healthy diet and exercise plan can really make those hard days a little easier to handle. And sometimes a little relief can go a long way.

Make sure you consult a certified personal trainer and/or health professional before starting any new exercise regime to make sure you are exercising safely and appropriately for your personal situation. You never know when you might need to outrun some zombies.

Trampoline tone-upBouncing on a trampoline with your kids is not just about the little ones. According to a NASA study, jumping for 10 minutes on a trampoline is equivalent to a 30 minute run, giving you the same cardio benefits in one-third of the time! The trampoline will help trim your tummy, legs and bottom. You can experiment with moves like the tummy tuck: as you jump, lift your knees up together and hug them towards your chest. As you fall back down, release them so you land in a normal bounce.

HISTORY OF THE BYFORD BMX CLUBByford BMX Club was founded in the early 1980s at Briggs Park Oval in Byford. The club then known as Pegasus BMX club was formed at the height of the BMX craze of the 80s to hold the 1984 Qantas Australian BMX Titles. This event was one of the first times an Australian event had pro riders come over from the USA to compete with the Americans Clint Miller and Gary Ellis taking out 1st and 2nd in the event. Byford BMX is one of the oldest clubs in WA and during its time folded in the mid 90’s, re-opening in the late 90’s as BMX was on the rise with the announcement that BMX would be included in the 2008 Olympics.

In the early 2000’s the track was raced regularly by future Olympian BMX rider Khalen Young. Khalen raced on Friday nights at Byford BMX before eventually heading to the USA for an outstanding professional BMX career which included rankings as high as World Number 2 and even more prestigious in 2009 at the height of his career he was the number 1 professional ranked rider in the USA.

RECENT EVENTSByford BMX recently held round 4 of the BMXWA State Series. The event a very profitable and successful event for Byford BMX that was attended by around 300 riders and some 500+ Spectators. The event was well attended and enjoyed by all delivering some good profit to the club from the club canteen.

Our last pro night attracted 189 riders a WA club record. In 2013 the club held a successful open day for all riders from WA to attend a day of racing which helped raise funds for our member’s that traveled to New Zealand for the 2013 BMX world championships.

Byford BMX looks forward to the future and will bid for future state and national BMX title events.

SPONSORSHIPIn recent times Byford BMX has attracted sponsors to the club such as, Bendigo Bank Byford, Total Eden Byford, Jet Cycles Kelmscott, TX Civil & Logistics and Perth Design Web and Print. The committee’s job will be to apply for government grants and obtain local sponsorships. These

sponsorships can be made up of cash donation and/or equipment and materials.

GENERAL INFORMATIONByford BMX Club holds racing on Friday nights (during school term, weather permitting). Racing starts at 7.15 for all ages from 2 years old to 50.

Byford BMX Club is located at Briggs Park, Mead Street in Byford and currently races all classes from Mini Wheelers to Senior Cruisers and all classes in between.

They have great facilities at the club to make for an enjoyable evening including canteen, loan helmets, gloves and small loan bikes for new riders, plus First Aid by senior first aid certificate holders.

Now in our 8th Year! It’s January 2007. Dave Nolan, Enno de Boer and Stig Lamberth were bemoaning that there was nowhere to “play” without the hassle of auditions, heaps of rehearsal, a PA system and a suitable venue. They came to the conclusion that if this “place” didn’t exist, they would have to create it.After some in-depth discussions they were pretty clear about what this “Club” was to be about - it was to be a place where musicians of all ages, experienced or not, could perform and meet with other musicians; in a non-competitive environment, at minimal cost and where the venue did not dictate what was suitable to be played. It was then that the RMC was born...So adverts were placed and in March 2007 at the Roleystone Senior Football Club the inaugural meeting took place. To ensure that people could play, Dave, Enno and Stig formed the “house” band to provide backing for people who wanted to perform. Eight people turned up to the first meeting. At the next meet, Crispy turned up along with fifteen more people. At the third meeting, still more. Grant joined the crew and brought with him an extensive array of audio and lighting gear.Club meetings were three hours long divided into 20 minute segments to ensure everyone got a go. Emails, website and posters were used for promotion. There were write-ups in the local media. Photos were taken at every meeting and published on the posters and website. Posters became collectables! With the help of Grant’s gear, what had started as a small vocal PA and a few amps grew, by Christmas 2007, into two performance areas. And the rest is history…

Roll forward to 2014 and the Club just keeps on growing. We are now an incorporated entity and very active in the Roleystone community. Apart from our Monthly Club Nights, we provide performers for the Roleystone Markets, Araluen Botanical Park, Private Parties and Fundraisers. The RMC has organised the annual summer Roleystone Concerts in the Park with the support of Armadale Council for the past five years drawing over 1200 people this year.We have an active membership of over 50 people each month, meeting at the Roleystone Senior Football Club at Cross Park on Jarrah Road Roleystone. Our regular members love to hear new performers; it’s what keeps our Club evolving.

We invite you to come along to a Club Night and see more of what we do.

Don’t waste it!Don’t just throw out those food scraps. As well as adding them to your compost bin or to the chooks, there are lots of other good uses for them.

CELERY LEAVESDon’t just eat the stalks. You can add the leaves to salads and soups. Celery leaves have five times more magnesium and calcium than the stalks have, plus they have vitamin C and antioxidants.

MELON RINDYou can add melon rind to the blender for a smoothie which contains the amino acid citrulline which boosts your circulation.

BROCCOLI LEAVESBroccoli leaves are high in carotenoids and vitamins A and C. You can cook them as a vegetable dish or shred the leaves and stems for a salad.

ORANGE PEELOrange peel is full of fibre, flavonoids and is high in vitamin C and pectin. The fibre in the pith is thought to curb the appetite. You can put a whole orange, flesh and peel and all, in the blender for a filling smoothie.

ONION SKINOnion skin is rich in anti-inflammatory quercetin that may reduce blood pressure

and help to unclog arteries. You can cook the skin in soups, stews or stock and then remove it before serving.

“Dedicated to conserving our native wildlife” Few of us can say they grew up with kangaroos hopping around the backyard and snakes in the lounge room. For as long as I can remember I have had wildlife around me, an upbringing that has certainly never been dull.My parents, Klaas and Mieke Gaikhorst, owners and founders of the Armadale Reptile Centre have been educating people, and rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife for over 40 years. Passion, dedication and hard work drive the privately owned, family-run facility, and are qualities instilled in me.

How did the centre begin? After 28 years working full time as a keeper at Perth Zoo, Klaas and Mieke set out to fulfill their dream of establishing a wildlife education facility after many years of dealing with the fear, hysteria and misidentification of reptiles and many other species. We moved to Armadale in 1992 and began with a building. It took two years for Klaas to set up and we finally opened in 1995. By then they were already carers of quite a few animals. Today, we care for over 500 animals.

What we are aboutThe main aim of the centre is to educate people on local wildlife identification and behaviour and enable people to safely observe these animals in their surroundings. We cater for the elderly, school, scout, disabled and social groups. We provide a rescue and removal service, snake awareness and venomous snake capture courses and take in sick and injured fauna. All of the wildlife housed at the centre has been brought to us either abandoned, surrendered, unwanted, confiscated or, more commonly, injured and not able to be released back into the wild. We receive and care for sick and injured wildlife on an ongoing basis. We have a small hospital and it costs the centre thousands of dollars every year for veterinary costs alone. As the business is privately owned it does not receive financial assistance from the government and is solely reliant on the admission prices to maintain feeding and upkeep, let alone the veterinary expenses.Volunteers and work experience contribute to the ongoing work and education required to keep the animals cared for and the centre functional. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to achieve what we have so far. It’s a tough never-ending job. If you are interested in volunteering in animal husbandry, enrichment, education, maintenance or construction and would like to be a part of our team to enhance and enrich your knowledge then contact the centre.
