Bodybuilding is a form of modification, which involves intensive muscle hypertrophy. In layman’s terms, a lot of heavy gym work and dedication. There are competitions that body builders partake in, showing off their muscles to a panel of judges often covered in fake tan and oil. Some would say that bodybuilding is a vain profession, but others could view it as self-confidence and as a healthy pastime.

Now, in my opinion “healthy” is a strange word to describe freakishly large human beings, covered in protruding veins and stuffed with enough steroids to reanimate a dead whale. I would rather think as them as determined, self-conscious and image obsessed. I do not have anything against body builders, they could teach those of us that are lazy that exercise can really benefit us.

Body Builders

In past years bodybuilding was a more serious sport and body builders were more concerned with the actual physical aspect of the bodybuilding process. In more modern years, competitions have become more about the image. Bodybuilders nowadays have almost exaggerated muscles. They are so defined they look as though they are bound to explode and shoot out gallons of oil and tanning lotion.

Their image has become an obsession, bodybuilders are also used as a style reference (ex. You’re sporting that body builder look today). Besides the fake tan and over the top oiled abs, body builders are loyal to their hair. Gym couture amongst body builders is not really popular as there are not many ‘gym’ wear options, so Bodybuilders really take pride in their hair and embrace many hairstyles.

Some past trends amongst body builders have been; the blonde mop top, curly perm, and bald headed for most men. The current trend is the slicked back look. I know right, possibly the worst hairstyles you could ever wear! But the slick hairstyle is not so bad in my opinion.

Fabulous ladies and suave gentleman from the fifties wore slicked hair. A lot of people can successfully pull off the slicked hair look, but there’s always that niche of people that turn a classy look into a look of utter trash. But apart from the poor people, who weren’t ever in the media, everybody in the fifties had class and style. So there were no niche’s to ruin that beautiful thing.

The slicked look has made many return appearances since the fifties. Many celebrities I do not care about have brought the look back in various recent decades. The slicked look is still seen as a look of class, but more so as a vintage classy look. It is usually accompanied by a smart old-fashioned dress sense. The slicked hairstyle can transform a scruffy bearded man into a gentleman, who may occasionally smoke a pipe in an armchair in front of an open wood fire. It can also turn a regular tramp into a smart tramp; I hope you are getting my point here.

The Hair Slick

The look is very basic to pull off, it’s not one for special people that have fabulous live in hairdressers. A regular Joe could simply purchase a tub of gel and boar bristled brush to become a member of the slicked hair club. You do not even need to have a specific hair length, just as long as you have a reasonable amount of hair on your head.

Unfortunately in recent times, bodybuilders are that niche of people that have ruined something truly great. They have made slicked hair look trashier than a televised celebrity wedding. The slick is incredibly popular in gyms across Europe as it not only appeals to body builders but it is also majorly convenient. As a part of health and safety, hair in the gym is advised to be kept away from the face, so bodybuilders do not miss any loose oil bottles left on the floor and slip onto their biceps, possibly bursting one of them in the process. I was only joking in that last sentence; loose hair however is actually a danger in the gym.

As harmless as you may think a hairstyle is, the slick craze amongst bodybuilders has caused a widespread problem. Shortly after the hairstyle became popular, many bodybuilders became very depressed and the number of depression cases kept growing. I know you must be thinking that there is nothing for fit tanned people to be depressed about. Well you are wrong, there is a great deal fit tanned people can be depressed about.

So I’m going to tell you a ridiculous story and I want you to promise not to laugh.

There was once a bodybuilder named Jim. Jim was a nice man but he was completely obsessed with his body and image. He was aware of the fact he had major identity issues, so he hid them by following every trend possible so he could be accepted into society. It got to the point where Jim saw everything he did as “normal” and as long as he had his looks and “style” everything was fine. There was a new hair-slicking trend going around the gym and naturally Jim just had to get involved. He would spend hours brushing his hair to make sure it was perfect. He developed a daily hair routine that slowly started to take over his life, this led to him taking hair styling more seriously then the gym. Because Jim was so hypnotized by his hair routine he did not realize his lack of bicep and tricep muscles.

The Problem

19

Until one day, he drastically looked in a long mirror to check how his hair flattered his arms and realized he had slimmed down. Now Jim was no rocket scientist, so he did not realize that brushing his hair was taking over his life and causing his muscles to decline. So all he could do was get upset and continue to maintain his beautiful mane. He eventually went into a deep depression and his close friends and family urged him to do something about it. He visited his local GP who prescribed him anti-depressants, we all know GP’s do not really care for our well-being and will just prescribe us anything to make us go away. So Jim took anti-depressants for a couple of months but nothing changed he did not regain his muscles and continued to brush his hair. He stopped going to the gym completely because the anti-depressants caused him to regularly feel tired. There were many similar cases all over Europe and it started to spiral out of control. Bodybuilding competitions were halted, as bodybuilders were not considered fit enough to take part.

Now this story is based completely on real life, this really was a widespread problem. Not for good people with morals and a conscience, but for body builders. The anti-depressants did not work at all they just made things a great deal worse. We really did think we were going to see the end of the bodybuilder breed until…

CHAPTER

Page 26: The Depression

After months of suffering, somebody came up with a solution. An easy solution that I would have expected bodybuilders to come up with but I obviously overestimated their intelligence. The solution was a new kind of brush and I know you are thinking how could a brush cure something a brush started. Well this type of brush was fused with a dumbbell on the end, so every time hair was brushed using it, it provided a work out as well as a styling routine.

A Doctor named Walle Naeem designed the brush and had it manufactured to help the depression and provide future convenience to bodybuilders. As the build up of muscle is a gradual thing it took two months to fully test and see improvements before it was actually manufactured and advertised. Bodybuilders who helped test it out said that it had helped them regain their strength happiness and confidence.

Getting people all over Europe to be aware of this “cure” was harder than expected. Because Dr Naeem did not have any funding he had to give up all of his free time and rely on close friends to help promote and push advertisement. It was only when the brush got big in London that news of it spread to Europe and by then for some bodybuilders it was too late and they had completely lost drive becoming lost empty shells. Many body builders stopped body building.

The Solution

Page 27: The Depression

Dr Walle Naeem born on September 24th 1980 is a British family doctor from London. He studied at the London school of medication and studied a Masters degree in social psychology at the Brighton institute of social science. He comes from a large family and grew up with a family of body builders and fitness fanatics. Although he had clear differences with his family, he was incredibly close to them especially his twin brother Sied.

When the whole depression really kicked in, his brother Sied a dedicated body builder was seriously affected by it. Naeem had really wanted to do something to help when the depression started but never had the time, it wasn’t until Sied got seriously depressed and attempted to take his life that Naeem really pushed for a cure.

After much extensive and intensive research Naeem came up with a cure, The Dumbrush. The hybrid brush and dumbbell was created to cure the body builders of their depression, as Naeem did not believe medication was the answer. After Naeem made this breakthrough he thought everything would be quickly sorted, but as “normal” people really did not care about the body builders it was harder to promote then he thought it would be.

Naeem had to give up all of his time, money and even his job to promote and test out the Dumbrush. He relied on friends and connections he had to produce and advertise the brush. He went around London gyms and fitness centers giving out samples of his brush, whilst keeping track of the progress it had on the individuals who tested it out. Eventually word spread and Naeem and his ‘miracle’ brush got much more recognition. Big companies invested in the brush and Naeem became rich and was dubbed ‘The savior of the bicep’.

If only I gave a tiny rats behind, maybe I would have also become a millionaire and been dubbed the savior of something!

The Dumbrush

The Dumbrush is a styling brush with a weight attached on the end that builds muscle whilst brushing one’s hair. The weights range from 0.1kg - 15kg. The brush is available in all fitness supply stores and some good hair shops. British doctor Walle Naeem created the brush in 2012. It resulted in the end of the great Body Builder depression of 2012.
