The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) announced on Aug 16th 2016, a funding opportunity for Scientific Leadership Awards (SLAs) at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). DHS expects to award six grants totaling $3.6 million. Minority-serving institutions (MSI) make up a category of educational establishments (federally recognized Title IV colleges and universities) based on enrollment criteria (typically the percentage of enrolled minorities at a particular school). Such schools are eligible for federal funding under Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965.

SLA grants are competitively awarded to accredited MSIs to:

• build Homeland Security Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (HS-STEM) capabilities

• establish HS-STEM related curricula and courses of study,

• support the development of early-career faculty, and
