I have been informed by the Committee that they have not received payment for the chocolates that were given to sell as part of the Groups 1st fund raiser during 2011. I realise that this would of slipped your mind so I ask for you to please speak to the Committee as they look after fund raising and have all the records. Fund-raisers Each Scout Group works out its own budget for fees and chooses its own method of charging Group Fees. Shailer Park collects this money through term fees and fund raising. All parents are expected to participate with fund raising. Shailer Park Group holds two major fund raisers per year and Parents are given a choice to either participate or not. If you decide not to participate in the fund-raising then you will be required to pay an extra $50. The choice is yours. This is per family not member. There are two ways that you need to look at Shailer Park Scout Group.

Welcome to 4th Term. I would like to start by saying thank you to the Leaders that helped get our Group Camp organised - Chrystele, Meg and Chris. Gidday all ! We had a great Term 3 at Joeys! Our programme, focusing on various aspects of Scouting, saw us brush up on our Promise and Law, get tangled up with ropes, learn how to tie a reef knot, and do a bit of ‘camping’. We also had a fun night of cooking, and can report that the Den’s smoke detectors are working properly! What’s Scout cooking without a bit of charcoal……? We invited the Venturers to come and visit us for a Campfire night with songs and games, and we visited the Cub Pack for a night of fun and friendship. It was great to see so many past-Joeys amongst the Cubs. We finished off the Term with an activity-filled Father’s night and a games night.

Minbalup Joey Update

Driveway We ask for Parents to avoid driving up the driveway. This for the safety of the children. Perhaps park in Ballan Ct and walk down through the park but be careful of your footing. If you feel you need to drive up then go slow and I mean slow – do you want to be the cause of someone being hit by your car? Sign In & Out Parents/Adults must sign their child in and out, indicating that they are responsible for picking up or dropping off. Children are not to be signed in or out by another child. Uniform Uniform can be purchased from the Scout Shop, 32 Dixon St Auchenflower ph 37215724. This may be ordered over the phone and paid by credit card. I was asked the other day why I hadn't done something that I was asked to do. I must explain I to am a volunteer. I do have a real job plus a family. My husband says I should take my bed to the den. The other day I did. So you see I am not a “gonna”. If I say I am going to do something, I will, but may not be able to do it the same day you ask.

Fees Group fees are posted to you at the beginning of each State school term. Prepayment - At the beginning of each year the payment for renewal membership is due for all members. As your Group Leader it is my responsibility to make sure this is collected on behalf of the Scout Association Queensland Branch. As parents ourselves we do realise that this is a bad time asking for money with school fees etc. We offer a prepayment plan with 2 options. 1st Option when you receive your $50.00 Group term bill it will have an extra $25 added. Group Term Fees Broken down: Group Fees $30 Section Fees $20 Pre part payment $25 renewal mship fees Total $75.00 This $75.00 will be collected per school Term, and can be paid either cash, cheque or Internet. 2nd Option pay $6.00 per week. This 2nd option can only be done through Internet payment. Please note that the membership fee is less for second and subsequent children that are members of the Group, and this lower fee will be reflected on invoices sent to parents with more than one child in the Group. If your child decides to resign from Shailer Park Scout group before 1st March of the coming year you must notify the Group Leader personally and you

will be reimbursed your pre-part payment renewal membership fees in full, minus any outstanding debts. I repeat it is the responsibility of the parent to notify the Group Leader of their child’s resignation by the 1st of March otherwise you will forfeit the money you have paid. Some of you may wish not to participate but prefer to pay the whole bill when it is due so with this in mind you are given a choice. Parents when making payments through Internet please put youth members surname so we can ID payments. Also do not make payment yourself at the bank all we see on the bank statement is “Deposit date” we do not know who it is. Please note the renewal membership fee increases each year with insurance. If you wish to increase your prepayment yourself please do. I have left this for your choice. I will however be discussing with the committee about increasing the amount for pre-payment to keep up with inflation. Any difficulty paying by due date, please give me a call. All the Best Group Leader Matkah

Last term we welcomed Rikki, who will be joining us as a Joey Scout Leader. Rikki has years of experience in Scouting, having been a Cub Scout leader, and a helper on Joey nights. We are also very pleased to welcome Quoll to our Mob as an Adult Helper. Quoll also has years of experience in Scouts, as a Scout Leader, Group Leader and helper in all Sections. Their joining us means we can now accept more Joeys, so let your friends know! A HUGE thank you to Gecko, the Venturer Leader, and to Lightning (David), Venturer, who have been with us for the past few months, helping out on Joey nights so I wasn’t on my own. Who will the Joeys have to chase now? Thanks too to Matkah, Group Leader, who has also helped out. To some, Joey Scouts might seem like just a group of kids running around, playing and having fun - and they’d be right! However, whilst we are doing these fun activities, we are

working on participation, turn-taking, interaction, communication, team-work, and of course, sharing and caring. We also include lots of other skills, like hand-eye coordination, gross and fine motor skills, visual and auditory memory, self control, and following directions. If you ever want to know what’s behind all the fun, please ask! So, what are the Joeys up to this Term? MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! That’s right – we are having a “M” theme, with Monsters, Masterchef, Mystery, Music, Melbourne Cup and Movie nights, and more! Madness and Mayhem with the Minbalup Mob – Marvellous !!!!! BINDAR.

Bunderra Cub Pack Update

One of the reasons we arranged to meet the Venturers and Cubs was to let our youngest Youth Members get to know some of the older Youth members of our Group, before the Group Camp at Murrenbong in September. When you are 6 or 7, a 16 or 17 yr old can seem very big, and sometimes a bit scary! It made it easier for the Joeys to mix with the other sections on the Group camp. Some of our older Joeys came for the whole camp, whilst some of our newer ones just came for the day, but all had fun, and added to their badgework. A big thank you to Mark Magness who came along to help out, (especially turning on those high set shower taps for the boys), and even survived having his face painted! We also said goodbye to Jackson, Morgan and Sam, who have gone up to Cubs now. Congratulations to Sam, who has just earned his Joey Scout Promise Challenge Badge. His name has been engraved on the special plaque in the Den, and he also receives a certificate and badge, which he can wear on his Cubs uniform.

Just wanted to let the parents know how grateful the cubs are for their support during our group camp. It was good to see all cubs joining in and having a good time. A special thanks to the two fathers who came along and helped with the cubs and joeys, their support was of great value. All in all I think the weekend was enjoyed by everyone and I feel it has also been good for the joeys to make friends in the cubs so that when they come along to future interactions between the two they will have a buddy to link with. As this was my first official camp as a cub leader, I found it was awesome and am looking forward to future ones. Raksha

Volunteering to be a parent helper at the recent Group Camp held at Murrenbong certainly was an eye opening and brilliant experience. I was pretty much dumb struck by just how much work and effort is placed in organising and running one of these camps. I actually came home for a break… The kids of all ages never stopped having fun, participating in games, activities and constant eating. Hats off to the chefs!!! A number of the adults would then compete in a snoring competition at night – a true sign of having been on the go all day. VLAD

Grace Wallace received her Australian Scout Medallion at a presentation held at the Den on Sunday 31st July, 2011. Grace has spent the last 4 years striving to achieve this highest award for the Scout section and now is looking forward to her next project, her Queen Scout. Without the support and encouragement from her Scout leaders, Sheepdog, Echidna and Hawkeye this achievement may not have been possible. The presentation was attended by the Regional Commissioner, Ian McPhee and Acting District Commissioner, Peter Cross and a small gathering of members of Shailer Park Scout Group and family, followed by a sausage sizzle and an enormous celebratory cake kindly arranged by Moomba & Salty. Thank you to all that attended and sharing in Grace's special day.

Treasurer’s Report 11th July – 16th September - 3rd Term Expenses Report Well it does cost a lot to run the den and it’s facilities. We need electricity, water, gas for Barbies, plumbing and maintenance just like a normal household would. Here’s a list of some of the expenses involved in the running of our Scout Den for this term: Section Fees $1358.86 Memberships $2650.96 Training $285.00 Badges $262.70 Stationery and Postage $341.15 Phone $142.50 Equipment $297.32 Bus to Group Camp $583.00 Cadbury Fundraising $4199.58 (We have 2 weeks to pay this before we start the drive which is why we need to get the money back from you) Functions and Camps $1439.47 Starters for flouros $9.00 (The cheapest bill but it still needs to be done) Electricity $210.64 Facility Activity Fee $5292.91 (This is our Den insurance) These are not our only bills just for this term. We also have to pay every few months to have the fire extinguishers checked for safety. As you can see this is why we need to charge fees and do things like fundraising every now and again to pay for these costs and others which in the long run do benefit your child. Lucky the leaders are only VOLUNTEERS hey!! Leanne McLuckie

Group Camp 9TH – 11TH SEPTEMBER 2011 All the sections arrived at the Den Friday night ready to pile into the bus for our camp at Murrenong Campsite. Each Scout carried their bags down to the bus. Then we waited to be put onto the bus. Off we went. We watched a movie on the bus so that the trip didn’t seem as long but it was still a long way. Once we got their each section got let off one by one. Everyone grabbed their packs to be told where to go. The joeys and cubs stayed down at the shelter to be let into their cabins whereas the Scouts had to wait to be taken to theirs which was a long way away. Once the Scouts got to their site they started unpacking the trailer with all their gear in it. Then they started pitching their tents while the joeys and cubs would have been either asleep or still having their supper.

After the campsite was almost finished being set up half of the Scouts were taken to supper. A while later they came back and took the other half for supper. Then the venturers showed them the way to their campsite through the bush. The next morning we got up and had to head down to where the parade area was. Then we had breakfast and gecko sent the Scouts on this crazy scavenger hunt. Then we had parade and started our bases. At one base they had face painting, mask making and made planes which Salty showed them how to make. Then we had lunch. The other bases were Merry-go-round made out of poles and ropes, Team Building Challenges with Kyle and Marcus and a challenge on an exercise ball to get from one tree to another by holding onto a rope and trying not to fall off!

After all the bases we went back to the parade area and got to have some free time with some things they made. After this it was showers and dinner then we did some mini game activities run by the Venturers to win prizes. Then we had our torch campfire, supper and then went to bed. The next day we woke up early again and organised and had Scouts Own and breakfast and waited for the parents to arrive. Then we did some games and activities with the parents to show them what we do on camps. We had a spiders web and a vertical bungy. After that we had lunch with the parents then we had final parade and all went home. EJ (Falcon Patrol Leader -Scouts)
