MONEY MATTERS For March 2018 By: Geri Eckert, Treasurer

Much to my surprise...and delight I might add .... we had a decent turnout for our Sunday Jazz. I was reasonably sure that the Super Bowl would keep so many of our members in front of the TV. We, however, managed to do well for the day in spite of the Super Bowl. And it seems that so many are sick with colds, flu. and such. We

hope they're done with that nasty stuff by now and ready to get back to the job of living. A shout out to Dave Tygett and Charlie Gehlbach who are going through some tough times as of mid February. Dave experienced another stroke in early February and Charlie is scheduled for more surgeries. We wish them both a complete and speedy recovery. INCOME: $710. PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For March 2018 Hello all. March again. Time to start thinking taxes. As sadly we all know Dave Tygett has suffered another stroke. Most wonderfully, corrective/preventive surgery is to be scheduled and a full recovery is in the offing. In the meantime I will be conducting the raffle itself but as a jammer I cannot do the ticket sales as well. Our present volunteers are burdened with other work. It would be so nice to

have one of our membership step forward until we are blessed with David’s return. Other than that club affairs are in order. A few of us Sacramento STJS members attended the “bankruptcy-board-meeting” on their second Sunday in February Session. They hope to re-form as a new society under a new name, or perhaps the original name. Our Past President offered the good advice, originating here, to collect an entrance fee from EVERY attendee, effective for warding off nuisances like bankruptcy, as well as it being no more than fair. URT of the month: Vinegar, the “aspirin” of the food industry. When I worked in the food-preparation machinery field, my company purchased two salad dressing companies. A few of us were sent to their plants where sanitary conditions were disgraceful. I asked our chemical engineers how bacteria did not flourish and cause food poisoning. The answer? Vinegar, it covers those kinds of sins. It is a sort of antiseptic and is the reason Ketchup and similar food products like salad dressing can be stored without refrigeration. I feel that THE Mr. Tesla, the father of A/C electrical current would be appalled by the behav-ior of the father of modern day Tesla, one Elon Musk. Elon’s automotive ventures/profit all are sub-sidized by us tax-payers. And he just made the claim that he could charge for one half hour, dead batteries in his 80,000 pound semi and drive it 500 hundred miles! Any thinking person who cares, would reject this claim out of hand on the basis of life intuition alone. But wait; there might be a way. What if he omitted the stipulation that the entire 53-foot trailer be filled to the gunnels with batteries. And those 9 foot flame throwers he built and sold; just what the doctor ordered for our forests and drought-plagued areas. Til next month, your Prez

VIBES FROM THE VEEP (Vice President/Music Director) Carl Kaiser — For March 2018 The February session featured our renowned (by some) jammers! Jam all day long! Featured on the stage were Bev Anderson, Phil Anderson, Greg Ayala, Geri Eck-ert, Bob Edson, Charlie Gehlbach, Carl Kaiser, Mark Kramer, Frank Lindskoog, Gene Mondro, Dick Lockwood, Dave Sieber, Larry Tyrell and Chris Williams. Thank you folks! It may have been tough to compete with the big game, but one can record the big

game. As of this writing, I’ve already watched the game twice! Come to think about it, live music is not quite the same if it is recorded!??!!??! CALLING ALL MUSICIANS NORTH, EAST, SOUTH, WEST AND ALL POINTS BETWEEN - you are welcome to join us every first Sunday in Stockton at the Elks Club, 8900 Thornton Road, from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Besides the wonderful venue, including hot dogs and a bar, we have a group of friendly musicians. We also have an audience who loves to dance to the music. Most months, we have a top-notch guest band for great listening! There cannot be a better way to enjoy a Sunday, the day of rest! Our March session will feature the Black Tuesday Jazz Band. This band is led by clarinetist Domi-nic Ruggieri and features a lot of our favorite local musicians. I heard them play in Sacramento at the January Rent Party and they were fabulous. Prepare yourself for a great afternoon of music at the March session. More about this great band can be found on the front page of this newsletter.

That’s a 10-4 for me. Time to work on my taxes! See you at the club! Want to Contact Me? Send me an E Mail: [email protected]

P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For March 2018

This month I depart from the usual music-themed opening to offer my sincerest well-wishes to one of our San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society’s mainstays. Actually that is two of our mainstays. One is Marlena Tygett and the other is her husband

David Tygett. As you may know, David suffered another stroke on the Wednesday following our Sunday, February 4th Session. Word is that he is doing well as he recovers. To visit Dave, off Hammer & Don, it's Room 105 at Meadow wood on Wagner Heights. Or send card to: David Tygett, Meadow Wood, Room 105, 3110 Wagner Heights Rd, Stockton, 95209. For as long as I can remember Dave and Marlena have been at our SJDJS Sunday gath-erings to run our raffle. In addition, as my dentist may attest, they often bring candy and they decorate the tables for us in whatever holiday theme is indicated. Sometimes it is the little things in our lives that make the biggest impact. As you might im-

agine, the pressing issues that had to be addressed by Marlena was close to over-whelming. So, much to my surprise and delight, their February column (The Raffle Ramble) arrived in my email in-box on February 12th. That was only five days after Dave’s stroke. Marlena is this month’s author of the re-port. She took the time to write that col-umn! That is just truly beyond the call of duty. We convey our utmost thanks

to this wonderful couple. All the best wishes and prayers to you both! Come back soon Dave. Worth Repeating from last month: The STJS is undergoing a massive reorganization. This will include things like the name of the organization, the monthly format of their meetings, their guidelines, new constitution and by-laws, issues concerning bankruptcy and creditor satis-faction. I know that they would like to hear from you with ideas and concerns you may have. You may use their “Contact Us” section of their web site to do so. http://sacjazz.org/contact-us/ I attended the February 11th Reorganization Meeting in the Tailgate Room at STJS. There were more than 80 people in attendance. This reorganization task is huge. One is reminded of the question: “How do you eat an elephant”? Answer: “One bite at a time!” Several committees are being formed. New name of the Organization, Youth Outreach, Publicity, Newsletter, Meeting Format and Finance, to name just a few. New officers will have to be elected too. FYI: The Youth Fund is intact and is not affected by the Chapter 7 bankruptcy filed on behalf of the SJTS (Society). Your YouTube Homework assignment for the month: Meet Me in St. Louis Louis. By the Kings of Dixieland. The Kings Of Dixieland were a studio group that recorded for Crown be-tween 1957-1962. This is from their last album (Kings Of Dixieland Volume 7) under that name. The material was being used for albums as late as 1964 under different names (The Dixieland Scramblers, K.C. Bearcats, etc.). Over the years there were several Kings of Dixieland albums featuring various well known artists. Among them: Pete Fountain, Bob Havens, Ray Sherman, Allan Reuss, Nick Fatool, Dick Cathcart, Eddie Miller, Red Calendar, Matty Matlock, Milt Holland, Moe Schneider. Click and Paste in your browser. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl6HgEvIbDM&list=PLlGQU4AFzIZS9_0ATUq2laqmxJbNB_MXs&index=72

Next month I will tell you about this series of Dixieland Albums on the Crown Record label and the influence they had on me. Again, thanks to my Dad, Duke Lockwood. That’s 30 for March of 2018 Folks! Dick Lockwood - Editor The Delta Rag Registered Sax Defender & Immediate Past President of the SJDJS

Seen at the SJDJS Scene February 2018 By: Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus, The Delta Rag It is a good thing I was at the February session. There was a sparse audience, but I got enough enjoyment for at least 10 (maybe 12) people. Uh oh! I hope they don’t read

that and start charging me at the door for 10 or 12 people! I was really sorry I had to miss the Janu-ary session with the always popular Cell Block 7. I’m crazy about Bob Romans, and his reed guy, Pete Main, is one of my absolute favorite people in the whole world. I am so happy that Devil Mountain JB will be our August guest band, as Pete is their reed man also. However, any time we have a session made up of our jammarooneys, count me as a happy lady. Hearing Dick-Delta Rag Publisher-Lockwood on reeds is always a treat, and I stare in awe at Frank-Mr. President-Lindskoog and Carl-Veep-MusicDirector-Kaiser, as they get a word from the front line, and immedi-ately play an intro to any tune they call for, no matter how old, or obscure! Amazing! These are the folks that will be here come heck or high water. And we are blessed with some exceedingly talent-ed trumpet/cornet musicians but I have to stop naming all the terrific musicians who keep us enter-tained, because, . . . Just let me name trombonist Larry Tyrell, because he keeps his chops sharp by playing a lot of benefits, and Mark Kramer, who. . . . . . Please stop me somebody, I got other things to talk about here. ……… Whew! Dinner time arrived here at the “Old folks home” and you don’t want to be late! So I had to leave and get a fresh start. I want to beseech you to say a prayer for Dave Tygett, who is in the hospital recovering from a stroke. He is our excellent and popular Rafflemeister. Include a prayer for his lovely wife, Marlena. She radiates kindness, so keep away from her if you are determined to be mean. To vis-it Dave Tygett, Off Hammer & Don, it's Room 105 at Meadow wood on Wagner Heights. Or send card to: David Tygett, Meadow Wood, Room 105, 3110 Wagner Heights Rd, Stockton, 95209. Dave and Marlena brought Valentines decorations, AKA candy. Some things I can resist. Like buttermilk and okra; but I cannot resist a chocolate heart. While Marlena was decorating ta-bles, Stephen-IComeWheneverICan-Smith and Larry-WhatCanIDoToHelp-Tyrell helped out by selling raffle tickets. Say, did you know that February was our 39th anniversary as a jazz society? Yep, February, 1979 the Elks Lodge was full to the rafters with people delighted to be able to hear live Dixieland jazz. Both rooms had bands playing, and customers lining up to buy memberships in the San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society. Barbara-MadamSecretary-Baughman is the only non-musician charter member who still attends. And what would we do without her! We should crown her next year on our 40th Anniversary as “Queen of the Jazz”. I know she is going to tell me to forget the crown, just find her somebody to dance with! I had a hilarious conversation with Alice Hannan about tempers. She is always fun to talk to. I was double ddelighted to see Dave Sieber - the good lookin’ young guy playing the sousaphone. It’s been a long time, but he said he plays with the banjo band on the first Sundays, so he comes to SJDJS whenever he can. Gene Mondro popped in; also a seldom seen musician. Dave and Gene play with the “Way Back When” Band, with Bev and Phil Anderson. Bev and Phil were on our stage for a set, Bev playing Washboard and singing, and Phil playing banjo. That was a fun set, and they played “Darkness on the Delta” which I love. Something I did not enjoy seeing, was our lovely songstress, Geri Eckert, with a cane and a big limp from an unexplained severe pain in her leg. I’m hoping, hoping, hoping that we see her boogie-ing along without pain or cane come March 4th. The Grijalvas, the Matagas, and the Stillwells were seen zipping around the floor look-ing like Kool Kats, and that is such a pleasure to see. It was so sad to say good-bye to lovely pianist, Pat Blucher. She passed away and went to her reward last month. One of the sweetest people you could ever know. I really looked forward to the Sundays that she was able to get here to play for us. A beautiful lady!

Raffle Ramble From February 2018 By Marlena Tygett

We had a nice size crowd in spite of the lure of The Super Bowl! As always, those who buy the most tickets often win 2 or more prizes Larry Shaefer is one of those who took away 2 prizes, multiple record album and a bottle of wine. Another big spender is Betty Gadberry who chose the basket of

Blackberries and a can of candy. Also Barbara Baughman, a faithful volunteer for our Jazz club for years, took a pot of Tulips and also later won a bottle of wine. And then dear Billie Ricker with her radiant smile selected a pretty bracelet and pin and later a bouquet of stemmed flowers. Another multiple winner was Kathleen and her amazing husband, Stephen happily chose the Ice Bucket and a dish of lovely, fragrant soaps .Other happy winners were Luis and Francis Rodriguez who selected a Grill; our own multigifted volunteer and musician Dick Lockwood chose the Gummy candy: Pat and Ginger Devaney who LOVE people, looked forward to eating their prize of a Cinna-mon Cake; Yosh and Arleen Mataga liked the pretty tulips in a pot and Audrey Gulick went home with a bottle of wine.. Thank you to all who provided all the 16 Raffle prizes and to all those who bought Raffle tickets! I’m sorry to tell you my precious husband Dave had a debilitating stroke. Conse-quently we will not be running The Raffle and not be in attendance anytime soon. We hope some-one will step forward to accept this easy and fun volunteer service to our Jazz club A.S.A.P.!

Late News: President Frank Lindskoog will run the raffle aided by Larry Tyrell and Barbara Baughman. To visit Dave Tygett, Off Hammer & Don, it's Room 105 at Meadow

Wood on Wagner Heights. Or send card to: David Tygett, Meadow Wood, Room 105, 3110 Wagner Heights Rd, Stockton, 95209.
