Rising Star Nominee
Karen Jobe
Chi Chapter is pleased to nominate Karen Jobe for the
Rising Star Award. Karen is moving into the office of
President for Chi next year after being initiated into
Delta Kappa Gamma in 2014. During her time with
Chi she has readily taken on new positions. She has
planned programs of interest, enjoyable socials and
developed our electronic invitations. Even with
volunteering at her church, planning a daughter's
wedding, keeping up with three grandchildren, and
her many duties at school, she made Chi a priority.
Karen has many leadership skills as evidenced by
numerous positions she has held professionally
through her sixteen years of teaching. In addition to
raising two daughters, she has completed her Masters
of Education. At present she holds the position of
Grade Level Chair for the Kindergarten of her school,
which consists of ten classrooms. She has
successfully held this position numerous times.
Through the years she has worked as a mentor to new
teachers in her building both on and off her grade
level. She has been an active, contributing member on
the Parade of Excellence Committee and the
Multicultural Committee for her school. As the
Assessment Representative in her building, she will
be training the kindergarten teachers on the NCK-3
Formative K Assessment.
Golden Key Nominee
Betty Mayer
It is with pleasure Chi Chapter nominates Betty
Mayer for the Golden Key award. Betty is a behind-
the- scenes, unassuming individual. She works
tirelessly and meticulously to increase our
membership and to encourage actively- teaching
members as well as retired members. She seems to
have found the key to membership growth for our
chapter, an area that plagues chapters across this state.
She facilitated Chi's initiation of seven new members
in 2017, and five new members are being prepared for
initiation in 2018. Betty organized Chi members to
help a newly-initiated chapter member shelve 1200
books at her new school library in two days. She has
coordinated visits to reserve members in their homes,
organized and helped to deliver “Welcome Back”
bags to actively-employed members, had Gift Bag
lotteries at meetings to promote chapter spirit, and
helped to deliver “Thank You” bags to eighteen new
teachers. She works closely with the president and
other chapter chairs. Betty's focus on the various
aspects of membership makes her the “backbone” of
our chapter.
Betty exhibited these same leadership and
organizational skills while teaching. She was
Chairman of High Point Central's Mathematics
Department for ten years and a volunteer mathematics
tutor for The Academy at Central for two years. She
won Teacher of the Year and the Excellence in
Mathematics Teaching Award. She also sat on
Guilford County Schools Business Advisory Board
for Science and Mathematics. She continues her
relationship with students as a private tutor for
advanced mathematics students.

Society Name Change
among Constitutional
Amendments
Do you think changes in the Constitution at the
International Convention are not of interest to you?
Then, you need to read your Mar/Apr 2018 DKG
News. One of the proposals up for adoption is a
change in the name from The Delta Kappa Gamma
Society International to Women Educators
International (DKG). State organizations will be
named by geographical areas and each chapter will be
named by the state organization. These changes and
more are part of a rebranding of the organization
proposed to allow the organization to promote itself
based on who we are, not who we were, while
honoring our past. Read all the changes in the DKG
News.
Sylvia led a discussion on
Chi Chapter Standing Rule changes.
