    Board OKsbudget thathikes taxes

Dallas School Board officially raised tax-es at its June meeting. The final budget of$33,599,574 represents no changes from theMay proposed budget. The 2% tax rise repre-sents the index allowed by the state of Pennsyl-

vania and adds an additional $38 to an averagetax bill of $800.

The district did not apply for any exceptionsto raise taxes over the index.

Board member Maureen Matiska, who alsovoted against the proposed final budget in May,was the only board member to vote against thebudget. She said after the meeting that the bud-get does not meet her approval because it doesnot put money aside for the elementary school.

The board voted to refund its bond debt, amove that, according to district business man-

ager Grant Palfey, will save the district over$448,000.Cyber school will now be the only option for

summer school in the Dallas School District.High school teacher Jennifer Lamoreaux andVice PrincipalBrian Bradshawoutlined the newsummer school program.

Lamoreaux said summer school will notbe used for acceleration but will be offered tostudents who have lost credit in one or moreclasses.

According to Bradshaw, packets have beensent to students recommended by counselorsfor remediation. The cost of the program willbe $100 for one-half credit and $200 for a fullcredit. Arrangements for lending laptops canbe made for those students who do not have ahome computer.

Lamoreaux and Bradshaw also gave a pre-sentation to the Dallas School Board about thedistricts first year of cyber school. They saidthe district saved $108,000 in fees which wouldhave gone to charter schools and the programalso experienced student success and increasedgraduation rates.

Lamoreaux told the board that four studentswho had planned to drop out were able to grad-uate with their class this year because of thecyber program.

In all, eight seniors used the cyber school thisyear to help them earn enough credits to gradu-ate. The program provided services to 17 stu-dents full-time and 29 students part-time.

The board voted to continue to partner withthe Seneca Valley School District for cyberschool programs, approving a three-year con-tract from 2013-14 to 2015-2016.

The cyber school program will expand nextyear in the district and Dallas teachers will

Paige Selenskis playing days arent over yet

    For The Dallas Post

Former DHS field hockey player graduated from University of Virginiaand earned spot on 30-player United States Womens National Squad

Paige Selenski hasbeen to theworlds premier event in ama-

teur athletics. The Dallas High School grad-

uate returned from the London2012 Olympic Games to com-plete one of the most successfulfield hockey careers in AtlanticCoast Conference history.

Selenski is done withher timeat the University of Virginia, butthere is no reason to think herplaying days are over.

Last month, Selenski bothgraduated from Virginia andearned a spot on the latest

30-player United States Wom-ens National Squad.

Im just going to take it slowright now, said Selenski, who

made the team through theWomens National Champion-ships at Old Dominion Univer-sity in Norfolk, Va. Right now,my heart is still in field hockeyand playing the game.

Its a bit early in the processto determine whether Selenski,

who will be 23 later this month, has another Olympics appear-ance in her future. She is moti-

vated by another major interna-tional event.

Four years is a long time,Selenski said. I think for mosthockey players, the World Cupkind of splits it up.

There are two years betweenthe Olympics and the World

Cup. Everybody I play withwants to play in a World Cup, aswell.

    That gives Selenski a target

on the playing field for 2014 ata time in her life when she isalso preparing for the next stepelsewhere.

Thats something Ive beentrying to figure out for a while, said Selenski, a speedy forward

who finished her career at Vir-ginia as the eighth-leading scor-er in NCAA Division I history, afour-time All-American and the2012 ACC Player of the Yearafter redshirting in 2011 to con-centrate on national team play.Just graduating from a greatuniversity obviously opens up alot of opportunities.

Selenski, who earned a de-gree in English, said other lifedecisions will have to be madeas they come up. For now, sheis looking forward to movingback to Pennsylvania with the

national team when USA FieldHockey moves its headquartersto Lancaster this summer.

    Last summer ended with

Selenski scoring a goal in theOlympics. She had the onlyscore for the United States in a2-1 loss to Belgium in the finalgame, which determined 11th

and 12th place in the 12-teamfield.
