Campers familiar with the Henderson Point campground at the Kerr Lake State Recreation area will find some new additions and improve-ments greeting them this Memorial Day weekend. The campground opened 53 newly renovated sites this week that replace previously eroded and worn-out sites, said Bryce Fleming, superintendent of the park.

Area 1 includes 31 campsites that are non-electric, and 15 of those sites are now defined by timbered borders and have graveled drives and pads. Two of the sites are duplex sites that can accommo-date more than one group. Two of the sites are also handicapped accessible and include a concrete pad. Fourteen sites are located in low-lying areas, sandy areas that flood frequently, so no timbers were installed around the borders of those sites, Fleming said. But those campsites do have new fire rings, lantern hooks and picnic tables.

Campsite renovations at Henderson Point complete

“We’ve tried to take into account the size of the camping equipment people are using now,” says Bryce Fleming, superinten-dent of the Henderson Point campground at the Kerr lake State Recreation area. With larger recreational vehicles and camping trailers, more room is needed to access the campsites and longer driveways have been added.

Area 1 also has a new shower house that replaces a 40-year old facility that was not handicap accessible. The 800-square-foot facility includes a solar hot water heater to reduce energy costs, Fleming said. Improvements have also been made to the wells that provide water for the campground and shower facilities. Some roads in the campground area have also been relocated to provide better access.

Area 2 campsites are all electric. Sites 35-55 have not changed. Sites 56-75, H-4 and H-5 are the remodeled sites. The sites now have 50-amp electric service, timbered borders, fire rings and lantern hooks like the other Area 2 campsites. Two sites are handicap accessible with concrete pads and two of the sites are duplex sites, providing space for two groups of campers.

“We’ve tried to take into account the size of the camping equipment people are using now,” said Fleming. With larger recreational vehicles and camping trailers, more room is needed to access the campsites and longer driveways have been added. Most of the sites in Area 2 have steps leading down from the driveway area to the tent pad be-cause of the natural grade of the terrain, he added.

“While the renovated campsites in both areas are in roughly the same locations as before, the site numbers have changed slightly,” said Fleming. Campers can go to www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/kela/main.php to view the updated map of Hender-son Point.

N.C. State Parks announces mobile phone application for park visitors

A free mobile phone ap-plication with comprehensive information about North Carolina’s state parks, in-cluding the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, has been in-troduced by the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation in partnership with Friends of State Parks and ParksByNa-ture Network, a developer of mobile, interactive networks.

The downloadable Pocket Ranger Mobile Tour Guide

for Apple iPod and iPhone and Adroid smartphones allows visitors to plan and explore state parks with details readily at hand about park locations, trails, facili-ties, reservations, events and special news alerts.

In addition, an upgraded “pro” version for iPod and iPhone offers GPS-aided, state-of-the-art navigation of state parks, storage of detailed topographic maps

and enhanced interactive features. A similar upgraded version for Android users is in development. A substan-tial portion of the annual subscription price for the upgraded versions will go to benefit the nonprofit Friends of State Parks.

“This mobile applica-tion fits our commitment to broaden the visitor experi-ence in our 41 state parks and state recreation areas, and it captures the diversity and excitement of outdoor recreation in North Caro-lina,” said Lewis Ledford, state parks director. “The

ParksByNature project is becoming the standard for state park mobile applica-tions elsewhere in the nation and is a solid platform for further development of this technology.”

Once downloaded, the quick-search information in the Park Ranger Mobile Tour Guide is accessible to smart-phone users even when cell-phone service is unavailable. This includes official park and campground maps plus details on natural features, activities, fees and regula-tions. A social networking tool allows users to share

their state park experiences and photos in real time.

With the “pro” version and smart phone GPS tech-nology, visitors can record hikes and mark way points, track plant and animal species, download maps and store them offline, keep track of friends and family members within a state park and send personal “alerts” to select contacts. A highlight is the ability to

quickly share experiences with others on popular so-cial media sites.

“We’re excited to be part of this project,” said David Pearson, president of Friends of State Parks. “Development of this app not only benefits park visi-tors but the state parks as well, since proceeds from the upgraded version go directly to develop education programs in the parks and

toward efforts to protect our natural resources.”

The Pocket Ranger Mobile Tour Guide can be downloaded from the iTunes Store and Android’s Market – by searching N.C. State Parks or N.C. Pocket Ranger – or directly at officialstateparkapps.com. A YouTube tutorial is also available at www.youtube.com/user/PocketRanger-App.

A new boat ramp is finally under construction at the Nutbush Bridge camp-ground area after many years of planning. The ramp is being constructed on the north side of the recreation area and will access the main part of Kerr Lake.

Slated for completion in late August, the ramp will include four launch lanes with two courtesy docks, said Bryce Fleming, super-intendent of the Kerr Lake Recreation Area. “Each of the launch lanes will also have its own dock.” The site near the ramp will include 100 paved parking places for vehicles and trailers, along

with 40 gravel overflow parking places.

The existing ramp at the Nutbush Bridge location has only one launch lane with 25 parking spaces, said Flem-ing. “It’s a real safety hazard with just one lunch lane and that many vehicles trying to access that location.”

The new ramp will also feature a new restroom area with flush toilets. “All we have at that location right now is a portable toilet.

A special event area featuring its own dock and a large gravel lot that can accommodate special event tents and displays will also be constructed as part of the

boat ramp expansion. “The special event area will be especially useful when we have fishing tournaments and other large events that draw in a number of people,” said Fleming.

The height of the new boat ramp will also make it usable even when the lake levels are high, Fleming said. “The top elevation will be 310 feet above sea level. A number of the ramps we have now are at 306 feet above sea level. Except for those rare times when we have extremely high or low lake levels, we should be able to better serve the public with this ramp.”

Nutbush Bridge campground soon to have new boat ramp

Getting your boat out onto the lake should not be a hassle. By the end of this summer, the construction planned for the Nutbush Bridge campground area will make this task much more convenient for visitors to Kerr Lake.

Avoid getting stung by those pesky insectsBees and wasps can be a

pain to live around ... liter-ally. Finding the right traps and repellents could be the key to enjoying the outdoors this season.

At least 40 Americans die each year due to bee or wasp stings. Many other people face allergic reac-tions from the venom or serious pain.

Most bees are not ag-gressive and look to avoid scuffles with people. They may sting out of perceived danger or fear or if a person comes too close to a nest or surprises the winged crea-ture. Wasps, such as yellow jackets, could be a bit more spunky and territorial. Africanized killer bees do have the potential to swarm and be dangerous.

While bees and wasps can be beneficial, most people prefer to keep them at bay.

Repellents

A first try at keeping wasps and bees away from outdoor living spaces should involve some sort of natural repellent. Many insects are put off by certain smells. You can try citronella. Some people swear by baby powder, and dust it on themselves and other areas of the garden. One of the more effective repellents are mock wasp nests. Because these insects are territorial and will often fight to the death, they won’t build a nest too close to another wasp nest. Using a fake nest can deter wasps

from setting up home base nearby.

Traps

For those who have found that repellents sim-ply aren’t making a dent in the buzzing population, traps are the next option to try. It’s possible to make all-natural traps that don’t require harsh chemicals.

One of the most com-mon traps can be made simply from an empty soda bottle. Cut off the top of the bottle so that it is in two parts — the round reservoir and the pouring spout. Fill the reservoir with water and a little dish liquid. Tie the bait to the bottom of the spout and invert the top of the bottle so that it

forms a funnel into which the wasps will fly. Coat the entrance of the funnel with a little cooking oil or petroleum jelly so the wasp will slide into the opening.

The wasp will investi-gate the bait and eventu-ally tire of flying around inside of the bottle. The soapy water will be there to trap the wasp once it has fallen, and ensure that plain water tension will not suspend the wasp and prevent drowning.

If these types of traps are placed out early enough, an individual can sometimes trap the queen and cause the nest to be built elsewhere. Some tips include frequently chang-

ing the bait and burying the deceased wasps so they cannot warn their friends of the danger

through olfactory warn-ings. Different baits work better at different times of the year. In the spring, try hamburger meat. In the summer, sweet sources of food, such as crushed grapes, will work.

There also are commer-

cially made traps that will catch bees and wasps.

Sprays

Some people say that vin-egar works to repel honey-bees but can attract wasps.

Others say that spraying bleach on wasps will kill them. Others argue it only angers the bug and causes it to sting. Commercial wasp sprays will be effec-tive but can have a host of chemicals in them and may

not be safe around children and pets. Sprays should be used as a last resort and used on existing nests or areas where bees are seen congregating. Individuals should not spray bees as they are flying through the

air because they risk injury from the spray to others and themselves. If hornets, wasps or other types of bees are a nuisance that cannot be controlled by the homeowner, a professional should be brought in.
