"When j'onng, Josr.ru fell

from n horse, niul injured one leg so

badly Hint he has never since been

able to locomolc without the assis-

tance of a crutch. Hut the injuryI) the leg did not affect his head:Jou's head is level. His heart is

also in the proper place, and is big

with kindly feeling and tender sym-

pathy. Moreover, he is one of thoseindustrious men, who cannot 1;c

happy unless doing something.

About two years ago, finding thathis little sweet potato farm and

banana plot did not fully occupy hi

tinic JosKVii conceived the idea of

opening a school, hoping thereby to

furnish himself with useful and con-

genial employment as well as to earna little needed cash. His only school-hous- e

was his private dwelling, in

which he made a beginning with five

pupils, on November 2, 1880. liedevoted himself to his new dutieswith earnestness and diligence, andas a consequence his school soon be-

came popular with parents, andnumbers increased to such an ex-

tent that ho had no room for theiraccommodation.

A proper school. room, with school

furniture, then became an iudispens-abl- c

necessity. A neat little build-

ing, 21x14 feet, was therefore ercct-- c

1 and suitably furnished. From forty to fifty pupils, boys

and girls, varying in age from five

to twelve years, assemble in thislittle school-hous- e five days in theweek, to receive instruction in read-

ing, writing, and clcmcntaiy arith-

metic. They arc taught in theEnglish language only, and havemade remarkable progress.

It would be difficult, if not im-

possible, to find a native school

better conducted than this one, or anative teacher so'diligent, so pains-

taking, and so persevering in train-

ing the young' intellect as JosnriiG11.MAS. "

ORGAN RECITAL.

.The tenth free organ recital wasgiven Iry Mr. Wray Taylor on Tues-

day evening, in HI. Andrew's Cathe-

dral. The attendance was good, although more could have foundKeats. Mr. Taylor's style of playingis now well-know- n, so that it isneedless to refer to it; but wc

should (specially like to notice thedelicacy of execution which markedNos. 1 and 5 on tho programme, llclle's Offertoirc in G. and Silas'Andante in C. To our taste thesewere the two finest pieces on theprogramme. The chief attractionthough of this recital was the opportunity of hearing a new singer. MissMichiels has a clear, strong sop-

rano voice, which has been wellcultivated. Occasionally it soundsvery' sweetly, but tho whole effectwas marred by n constant indulgencein that vicious tremolo which usedto be so fashionable among singers.Singing to bo really plcasurabloshould bo clear and firm. In all

other respects Miss Michlcls acquit-ted herself well, and our local cele-

brities must look well to their laurelsif she fttays here. To her solos herbrother played an excellent cornetaccompaniment.

the LectureAt the Honolulu Library fc ReadingRoom Association Hall, by tho RevGeo. "Wallace, on Tuesday evening, was but sparsely attended. It seemsto us a pity tlmt when tho Commit-Ij- o

of the Association arc tryingtheir best to get up some little intel-

lectual amusement and recreationfor the public, that tho public shouldencourage them more. If these Jec-tui- cs

full through the public only

will be to blame, The leclurcr read

from his notes a very interestingstudy on "Talking." Judging from

the announced title of the lecture,"A fine Art much Neglected," wc

were unprepared to hear this as thesubject. The witty way, however,in which the Reverend lecturer made

his point that talking was a fine artson put us in good humor withourselves, and wc resolved to culti-

vate it on every opportunity. Tholecture showed that talking, as an

all, was much neglected. Sufficientcare was not taken about tho signifi-

cation of words, and the beauties ofcollocation and rhetoric were almostentirely neglected. The subject wastreated in a humorous but plainstyle, and the audience departedwell satisfied with their treat.
