Rev. December 2012 OSU-Tulsa Library THE CYRUS STEVENS AVERY ARCHIVE Introduction to the Inventory The Cyrus Stevens Avery Archive is housed in 8 document boxes, 7 albums, and 8 oversized folders. The archive contains the following: Biographical pieces written by or about Cyrus Avery; Typed and handwritten talks, addresses, essays and articles by Cyrus Avery, arranged alphabetically by title; Correspondence between Cyrus Avery and friends and family; local, state and national government officials and politicians; local, state and national branches of government (particularly those relating to roads and highways), arranged alphabetically by correspondent’s surname, company, organization, or branch of government; Photographs of Cyrus Avery, colleagues, the Avery homestead and farm, various Oklahoma roads under construction, and the Spavinaw water project; Press cuttings relating to roads and highways as well as a variety of other subjects arranged alphabetically by subject; Contents of 7 ring-binders (arbitrarily numbered B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7), consisting of correspondence, press cuttings, programs, etc. which Avery pasted onto blank pages and which have been kept in the order in which they were found. Every effort was made to preserve the original press cuttings within Avery’s original scrapbooks; however, due to the acidity of the newsprint and the fragile condition of some of the cuttings, it was necessary to replace them with photocopies. Most of these press cuttings were taken from local Tulsa newspapers such as the Tulsa World and the Tulsa Tribune and are readily available via the newspaper’s microfiche archive. Photocopies of the individual items from each of these scrapbooks have been filed within the appropriate categories for easier access for the researcher and to preserve the originals. 22 maps showing road and highway systems throughout the United States and Oklahoma. The archive was the gift of Joy Avery to the OSU-Tulsa Library in the summer of 2004; additional material was added in summer of 2008. The archive was organized and conservation measures taken by M. Burkart.
