Presidents Report Sept 2018
It was good to see many of you at the AGM. The sausage sizzle was a success and will probably
be on next year. The committee was again elected, the list of office bearers is in the Cutting
Edge.
Bruce Campbell our candidate in the Hornsby Westfield’s Local Heroes award was successful.
The Hornsby Men’s Woodworking Shed will receive a cheque for $10,000.00. This like the
Clubs Grant must be spent on specific items and be accounted for by May next year.
Please remember that the National Can Company will close on the 31st October this year. Not
only will our parking be affected but also the need to remove our timber and racking. It may
mean that we have to move it at short notice. Please make yourself available to assist in this
event.
Don’t forget the Cumberland State Forest event on the 28th October. There is a list on the
board please volunteer by adding your name.
The book libraries for Hornsby Council are well under way, under the hand of Tony Blair. They
will need painting. We only have to under coat them. This leaves us with the two cabinets for
Hornsby Connect to finish.
The construction of toys is progressing well and we should make our quota. The quality is
improving each year. Many members are testing their skills and enjoying their time making
toys
We continue to have problems in locating items which have not been put back in their correct
place. Consider your fellow members who are losing valuable time in trying to find them.

SECRETARYS REPORT
HWMS Committee 2018/2019
Your committee for 2018/2019 is:
President: David Harrison. David is returning for his second year as President. David, a retired
Marine Rescue Officer, has been involved with HWMS for 14 years having joined in October
2004. David has advised this will be his last year as President.
Vice President: Kevin Wallace. Kevin is also returning for his second year. Kevin, a retired
Railway Carriage Builder, is a relative youngster joining the Shed in March 2016.
Treasurer: Mark Wilson. Mark is returning as Treasurer for his fifth year. Mark a retired
Margin Lender, joined the Shed in March 2013 –now in his sixth year as a member. Mark has
also advised this will be his last year as Treasurer.
Secretary: David Tarran. This is David’s fourth and last year as Secretary. David is a retired
Building Project Manager and a member of the Shed for five years having joined in August
2013.
The above positions form the executive.
Immediate Past President: Ian Raper. As you will have deducted from above this is Ian’s
second year as IPP. Ian, a retired Accountant, is one of eight foundation members still active
in the Shed. That is seventeen years continuous membership. Ian is also our Liaison Officer
with Hornsby Shire Council.
Equipment: Jim Spence. This is Jim’s first year as Equipment Officer. A retired Electrical
Engineer, originally from Scotland, Jim, a long serving member, joined the Shed in June 2005.
Membership Officer: Colin Crispo. Colin is going into his second year as Membership Officer.
Colin is a retired Telecom Officer and a member of the Shed since September 2015.
Projects: Fred Blaauw. Fred, a retired Real Estate Auctioneer, has been Projects Coordinator
for six years. Fred is another of the Shed’s long serving members. Having joined the Shed in
October 2007 Fred has been a member for eleven years.
Public Relations: Philip Hirshbein. Philip, another of one our foundation members, is a retired
Superannuation CEO, has been Public Relations Manager for four years.
Woodturning: Greg Croker. Greg, a retired Industrial Chemist and a member of the Shed since
November 2013. Greg is also starting his second year as Woodturning Coordinator.
The above ten members make up your formal working committee. They meet once a month,
ten days before the Members’ Monthly Meeting. They represent you in plotting the course of
the Shed for the next 12 months and, in some cases, longer into the future. If you have any
questions or suggestions have a word with one of them.
It is also noted three members will be standing down from the committee at the next AGM.
Some positions might be filled from the existing committee but there will be three vacancies.
Yes, the next AGM is eleven months away but it is not too soon to think about taking on a
role. Speak to a committee member on what is involved and, maybe, become an assistant
with the view of taking on a role at the next AGM
The other committee members, while not involved in the formal running of the Shed, have
an important role in the functioning of the Shed. They are:
Auditor: Keith Peel, member since July 2012.
Catering – Christmas: Meesha & Dimithri Perera, Dimithri a member since Aug 2016
Catering – Kitchen: Les Sanford & Bruce Campbell, both foundation members.
Council Liaison Officer: Ian Raper (see above)
Cutting Edge Editor: Ivan Bosnich, member since September 2010
Events Coordinator: Ian Raper (see above)
Librarian: Philip Lincoln, member since May 2017
Maintenance: Tony Blair, foundation member, Jim Spence (see above) and Brian Sugden,
member since February 2008.
Please note Tony will be moving to far north coast later this year or early next year. The Shed
will be looking for a replacement to help Jim and Brian.
Toys: Bruce Campbell, foundation member and Fred Blaauw (see above)
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Brian Hart (Chairman) Member since June 2006, Fred Blair
(see above) and Ron Koutchavlis member since July 2014
Purchasing Officer: Bruce Campbell foundation member.
Web Master: Karen Benhar, member since October 2015
Welfare Officer: John Barrett, member since August 2017
Woodcarving: Keith Day, member since June 2015
In all there are twenty four members and one partner involved in the functioning of the Shed.
Like you they joined the Shed to indulge in their interest in working with wood. However in
taking on these additional tasks they do sacrifice some of their woodworking time. There are
some members who have more than one role. Maybe there is a task above that you could
lend your hand to and assist your fellow member. In particular Meesha and Dimithri need
assistance in organising the Christmas Party. If so speak to a committee member. Not only
would it give you a sense of ownership it would lighten their loads.

Of course, you can save the committee member and put your name up on the white board.

The Committee wishes to thank the many members who have given their time to help out at the Bunnings Sausage Sizzles, Traditional Tool Sale and North Rocks Markets.
As you see in the 2017/2018 Financial Report these events raised over $5,000.00. Without your support this would not have been possible.

3 D PRINTER DEMONSTRATION
BY YUVAL COHEN
Yuval gave us an introduction on how to operate a 3 D printer that he recently acquired.
The demonstration was well attended by enthusiastic members and Yuval
didn’tdisappoint. His expertise and knowledge on the topic was amazing. One can
purchase a 3 D printer for as little as $200 and up to 10’s of thousands. The demonstration
model was Creality CRIO costing around $500. A variety of materials can be used to
manufacture products such as, plastics, aluminium, stainless steel and even gold to make
jewellery. 3 D printers are extensively used in medical applications, automotive
engineering, food production. Below are some shots of the demonstration and an
example of items that Yuval has made.
OUR HERO
Bruce is one of our key members at the shed. Himself and his red truck are synonymous
with all things that move in and out of our shed. He has been noticed and honoured by
the Westfield organisation for good deeds, not only at the shed, also in wider community.
Well done Bruce. We are proud of you.
Bruce Campbell: Hornsby Woodworking Men's Shed
Bruce’s wooden toy venture is anything but child’s play
Bruce Campbell’s most memorable experience in his many years at the local men’s
woodworking Shed was being asked by the Children’s Hospital in Westmead to make special
furniture for disabled children to use.
“It was challenging and involved some of our best woodworkers. The feedback we had from
the hospital staff and their little patients was certainly a highlight for us,” he says.
Bruce has had an interest in woodwork and repairing things since his early school days. But it
wasn’t until he retired that he took on the hobby in a more serious way.
He has had a leading role at the Hornsby Woodworking Men’s Shed from its beginning nearly
17 years ago when it was the Triton Woodworking Group.
Bruce is best known for his work with the toymaking team, which produces about 400 toys for
distribution to charities every Christmas.
The toymaking started as a way to hone his woodworking skills, but he and his dedicated band
of men have taken it to an expert level.
Bruce is known as a friendly mentor for new members of the shed. Many have had little
woodworking experience, and he patiently shows them how it’s done, boosting their
confidence as they develop new skills.
Together, the 150 men turn their skills to whatever is needed.
It could be possum boxes, toys or street library boxes for the local council.
Bruce is pleased to have been voted a Westfield Local Hero. But he says there are 30 or so
active members of the Shed who work just as hard as him.
“It’s a humbling experience really. After all, I am only doing stuff that I enjoy,” he says.
The Shed will use its $10,000 Westfield grant to buy much-needed tools, machinery and
hardware for upcoming projects.

A DIFFERENT WORLD THEN
By Joe Fletcher
I finished my apprenticeship in March 1950. In those days most apprentices had to attend Tech College
at night, in fact those who wished to advance to professional status had to attend college up to four
nights per week to obtain a Diploma Entrance Certificate to study for the A.S.T.C.
This meant these young men had a very limited social life, so when the last exams of the year were
completed their desire was to find a lady friend for the long Christmas holidays, and hopefully for
longer. Now these fellows were a bit smarter than most, and this is how they went about it.
There were two dance halls reasonably close to the Sydney Tech College, one in George Street Sydney
(the Trocadero), and one in City Road near Sydney Uni. called the Surryville. There were about six to
eight in the group, and I tagged along just for fun to the Surryville dance hall with them. The problem
was transport. Sydney was far smaller than nowadays, but had an effective tram and bus system, and
very few private cars were available, although petrol rationing had just finished.
We all joined in the dancing and socialising, and after an hour or so we convened to rationalise the
results, as follows -
I'll swap a Marrickville for an Eastern Suburbs" was one successful result, and later one very
presentable lady pointed directly at one of the young men and asked "where do you live?" he named a
suburb "you'll do" she said. Some of these swaps were quite successful.
Now what about poor old Joe? you say. Well he missed out, and had to wait another eight years before
he met and married Myra. They will be married sixty years next October.
