GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY

Today is Vocation Awareness Sunday. It is set aside as a special day to make younger people aware of vocations, and for older people to encourage and pray for vocations. This Fourth Sunday of Easter is also known as “Good Shepherd Sunday” because the Gospel is about Jesus, The Good Shepherd. The word “pastor” can be translated as “shepherd.” Our pastors, and all who engage in pastoral ministry, are fulfilling a shepherding role. A good shepherd is one who knows his flock. As Pope Francis says he even smells like the sheep, because that is how close he is to them. For almost a half century I have been blessed with the opportunity to help Jesus shepherd his flock. We honor Christ as our high priest. As priest he had three roles: Priest, Prophet and King. For an ordained priest, the priestly role includes offering Mass and the sacraments. We lead people in worship and offer them God’s very divine life in the sacraments. As prophet I proclaim the Good News of Jesus: we are a loved and forgiven people. Sometimes I must preach something that is not always popular. People do not always like to be reminded about racism. Recently Cardinal Cupich was demanding that our lawmakers pass better gun control legislation. Pope Francis says we must tear down walls and not erect new ones. People do not al-ways like to hear the social Gospel. But it is part of what Jesus expects of us. The final “kingly” role refers to governance. A bishop has to govern his diocese and a pastor must govern his parish. Administration of the Church is important. These three roles belong to the priest. It is how he pastors.

I love the fact that I can pastor people at various critical moments of their life, in addition to celebrating Mass week in and week out. At the beginning of someone’s life I welcome them into the church through Bap-tism. Later I will minister their First Communion. In times of crisis I am present as the minister of the healing power of Jesus thorough the forgiveness of sins in Reconciliation, and the Anointing of the Sick. I help young people prepare for Marriage and celebrate their wedding. At the end of life, I minister the rites for the dying, and accompany them to heaven as I celebrate their funeral rites. I am there to help people experience God’s presence from “womb to tomb.”

One of the most exciting things I have experienced during my priesthood is the emergence of lay pastoral ministry. Lay people never ministered Communion at Mass or brought it to the homebound or hospitalized before when I was first ordained. There were no women serving as pastoral associates. Women religious have become involved in many creative new forms of ministry. Being a spiritual director or retreat master is only one small example. I have also experienced the renewal of the Order of Deacon. Chicago has the larg-est number of deacons of any diocese in the world. I was proud to be Cardinal George’s Vicar for Deacons for ten years after being a pastor for fourteen great years.

It is my prayer we can have more parents encouraging their sons and daughters to consider a vocation to serve Jesus and his pastoral mission to serve the Church. This includes religious life, priesthood and lay min-istry. For older men it includes the diaconate. This is not an easy time to ask a permanent commitment to engage in the work of Christ. But it is needed more than ever. Please pray for vocations. Please encourage our young people!

Peace and love always, Fr. Mike Ahlstrom

THANKS! For years, our dear friend and fellow parishioner Betty Ozark has been creating knitted goods for sev-eral different ministries in our parish. If we were to count the skeins of yarn she used, it would be meas-ured in miles or countless smiles. Betty’s ministry embraced each recipient with a warm DI hug, an affirmation of being cared for and valued. Betty will be moving out of DI in May. If you see her, thank her. Betty, may God bless you and watch over you. You will be missed but never forgotten.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES COLLECTION ON MOTHER’S DAY

Janice and her husband were both fighting can-cer when they came to one of Catholic Charities food pantries. Since they could not work, they needed help feeding their daughter and keeping their bodies strong through proper nutrition. Catholic Charities gave them the fresh food and produce, and connected them to the appropriate services that they needed at a very difficult time in their life. Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day to help families overcome enormous obstacles. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net. “True power is service. We must serve all people especially the poor, the weak and the vulnerable.”- Pope Francis

Our beloved Divine Infant School Principal, Mr. Gramarossa, is retiring at the end of this school year. What a positive and lasting impact he has had on hundreds of children during his 19 years at Divine Infant! We want to thank him for his devotion to our school and parish, and wish him a healthy, happy retirement. We would especially like to extend this invitation to DI graduates since 2000. Thanks in advance for helping us spread the word. Please join us May 6th at mass and a luncheon to follow in Langan Hall as we celebrate Mr. G!

SAVED BY THE ONE WHO WAS REJECTED Some city teenagers often scorn and reject farm kids. Yet it's no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the world's crops and livestock. This week's scriptures remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him. In this Sunday's reading from the Acts of the Apos-tles Peter tells the people that salvation comes through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In John's letter we hear that we have become God's beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes him-self as the Good Shepherd who "lays down his life for the sheep" (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in laying down your life for God's beloved flock?
