Many people tend to think of a Church Vestry as a kind of closed group that meets in eternally long and cantankerous meetings. Often the Vestry is either seen as a good-old-boys club or a glorified debating society. Our Vestry is neither. The Vestry of St Peter's is a group of nine committed, hard-working and faithful members who meet regularly to discuss and decide on issues facing our parish and its future. Perhaps a description of a recent meeting might be in order: We started with a devotion and discussion of the difference between identifying ourselves as either religious or spiritual or both. This is a particularly important concern as we grow in the future. Currently the Vestry is doing a book study on a provocative and very pertinent book entitled "Christianity after Religion." It explores the changing nature and perception concerning religious institutions in the US and how churches can respond faithfully to these changes. After this lively discussion we moved into noting our expressions of thanksgiving and gratitude. We recalled everything from the recent receptions for our graduates and for the Fowler/Apgar wedding as well as many other members who gave of themselves for the good of our parish family in the last few weeks. We continued with a review of our finances, various administrative issues as well as reports and decisions concerning our building and grounds, VBS and several other topics. We then continued our efforts at reviewing our bylaws. It has been nearly five years since we rewrote our bylaws and we are spending time this year reviewing and updating them. We passed three motions. One is concerning five edits focusing solely on issues of punctuation and grammar. One resolution focused on three changes to our bylaws. Two of these are to bring us up to date with changes in our diocesan canons and one reconciled our bylaws' use of the words "qualifications," and "requirements." Three true amendments, or additions, also passed. One will allow the Vestry to appoint delegates to the diocesan convention. Another will allow the position of Junior Warden to be shared by no more than two people. Both of the amendments are simply "codifying" in our bylaws what we have practiced off and on for years.

FROM T H E R E C T O R

Ever wonder what the Vestry really does? Many people tend to think of a Church Vestry as a kind of closed group that meets in eternally long and cantankerous meetings. Often the Vestry is either seen as a good-old-boys club or a glorified debating society. Our Vestry is neither.

The Vestry of St Peter's is a group of nine committed, hard-working and faithful members who meet regularly to discuss and decide on issues facing our parish and its future. Perhaps a description of a recent meeting might be in order:

We started with a devotion and discussion of the difference between identifying ourselves as either religious or spiritual or both.

Two of these are to bring us up to date with changes in our diocesan canons and one reconciled our bylaws' use of the words "qualifications," and "requirements."

Three true amendments, or additions, also passed. One will allow the Vestry to appoint delegates to the diocesan convention. Another will allow the position of Junior Warden to be shared by no more than two people. Both of the amendments are simply "codifying" in our bylaws what we have practiced off and on for years.

Page 2 - From the Rector, Con't

The final amendment is adding a new position to the Vestry called a Warden of Advice. This idea was suggested by John Kenney, our current Senior Warden. The amendment reads:

A retiring Senior Warden may assume the office of Warden of Advice upon the request of the Rector and advice of the rising Senior Warden. This office shall last a term of one year and will assure seat at all Vestry meetings during the term. There will be no vote allowed to the Warden of Advice. Consequently, the seat will not affect the declaration of a quorum nor of the results of a vote.

The role of Senior Warden can be daunting and having this Warden of Advice will allow for continuity and mentoring for new Senior Wardens.

The Vestry was reminded that any change in our bylaws have to be approved by two consecutive, regularly scheduled Vestry meetings, with the final vote being an affirmative vote majority of the entire Vestry, and not just of a quorum of the Vestry.

The meeting was efficient, productive and filled with goodwill and even humor at times. Also, we accomplished all of this in less than an hour.

If your view of a Vestry is one of power-brokers or curmudgeons or dreary and endless details, I would have to say that you have the wrong impression. I would even venture to say that, should you ask a member of the Vestry, he or she would whole-heartedly say that the time is enjoyable, meaningful and very worthwhile.
