I3th chapter of Matthew, and showing that at thi send of the age there was to be a "Harvest," (luringwhich there would be a separation between the tru epeople of God, symbolized by the wheat, and a merelyprofessing class, symbolized by the tares . Also, thatbefore the full establishment of the divine Kingdo mfor the blessing of the people, the "tares" were to b ebound into bundles and burned .

It has been long believed by many earnest Chris-tians that the work of harvest has been in progres sfor some years past ; which means that there shouldnow he much evidence of the declining influenc eof churchianity, and of the general overthrow o fwhat men have called "Christendom"--Christ's King-dom--the counterfeit of the true Kingdom of God .This is even so .

To discern this present condition of nominal Chris-tianity one has but to read the reports of the Sundaysermons in the most prominent churches, largelymade up of huntan reasoning, philosophy, worldlyideas ; and no apparent realization of the time i nwhich we live, the purpose and necessity of this tim eof distress upon the nations, and the reign of th e

Prince of Peace to follow :

The following excerpts from reports of sermon srecently delivered in New York City will serve toillustrate .

Says one prominent pastor according to the Ye wYork Times of April 11 :

"You can almost join the average church by tele-phone and send your photograph to be baptized, andthat's the end of it," he said .

"This is not what Christ expected of liis attire] ,and we might well net; if there is not a possibilit yof the church being eomhleteh taken away front Hi mby these methods . Are we not headed directly, toward san imitation church with an imitation faith !

"Tlnregenerated members dominate many churches ,having come into membership through loose method sand remain through false standards . They trampledown the outer courts of the temple of God, failing t owipe their feet before they come in, and worldlines sand godlessness is loosed, where prayer and devoutnes s

should reign .

"Men have permitted the unregenerat.ed and unspirit-ttal to crowd into the visible church organization . ButGod has said, `Except a man be born from above, h ecannot see the Kingdom of God .'

"Men have glorified in numbers, wealth and socialprestige, boasting apparent success through multiplie dmemberships, but God is still interested in the `littl eflock' who are genuine, devout and morally clean . "

Another is reported in the April 11, New YorkTimes as follows :

"Picturing the ultimate destiny of civilization inour world today as the prize in a race between Chris-tianity and catastrophe, the Rev . Dr . Norman VincentPeale said yesterday at the Dutch Protestant Reforme dMarble Collegiate Church, Fifth Avenue and Twenty -ninth Street, that it was the lay people of the churc hwho must have a spiritual revival if Christ and dem-ocracy were to he victorious over chaos and evil .

"If Jesus were riding along the streets of the worldtoday He would weep for us as Be did in the moment ,of His great triumph," Dr . Peale said . rope," the Rev . Dr . Ralph W. Sockrnan, the pastor, de-clared yesterday morning in his sermon at Chris tChurch, Park Avenue and Sixtieth Street .

"The word 'crisis' has often been overworked, ,, hesaid . "'Pulpit and platform have interpreted many atrifling explosion as the crack of doom . Rut there i slittle danger of oinking our elies ridiculous if we callthe present hour a crisis . Christian civilization isfacing a more crucial test than in 191.4 because th edisintegrating forces are more deliberate and the tragi crontsegttentces more clearly seen . "

ler regime in Germany . particularly against Jews an dChristians, Mr . Lovell emphasized as an essential needtoday an evaluation of man's natural religious instinctas it foundation for the building of Christian attitudes .

"The type of German culture now rising, however, "he added, "employs a paganism that has gone to seed.To meet it Mr. Lovell declared the world must develop

a "positive pagan note in the terms of justice, fai rplay and magnanimity' ." Such a note, he said, ha dg uided Abraham Lincoln, "probably our greatest Chri-tian," who, said the speaker, "was versed in countr yvirtues, a basic granite" which lifted him above th elevel of his persecutors .

Hitler was described as possibly being "in part agift from God to the twentieth century," if the worl dmeets the new challenge . Mr. Lovell saw as "the onlyway to deal with paganism in Germany," a new con-cept of Christianity, "based on the old fundamental ,homely note of honesty, courage and tolerance . "

Criticizing Christianity as having ''no underpinningbeneath our superidealism ." he said we had failed toachieve ;, ideals of peace, -mein] justice and economicright " because "dee have not yet enough common de -e ncs , hono r and honesty at home or abroad, to pro -vide a foundation for permanent peace and interna-tional ,lusliee .'' He argued for an attempt at a syn-thesis of ideals between nations .

"We have been trying to build a New' Testamen tworld and we have not yet got up to the Old Testamen tlevel," be said .

Religionists Plight in Germany and Austri a

The situation of Catholic interests in Germany ,Austria and Ita]V presents extremely difficult prob elend, for the Vatican, and is resulting in anythingbut a united front among its prominent spokesmen .Thus we read of criticism of Italy voiced some week sago for its failure to support Austrian independence .Later, when Germany had taken over Austria, thehighest Catholic bishop in Austria wrote a cordia lletter to Hitler offering cooperation and closing theletter with the salutation "Heil Hitler . " The Au strian bishops advised their parishorrers to vote fo runion with Germany ; later, the Vatican rebukedthem for so doing, saying it was done without knowl-edge or consent of the Pope A radio broadcas tfrom Vatican City confirmed this stand ; but thi sradio announcement was later declared by the Vati-can to he a "theoretical study—neither official, semi -official nor inspired . " Protestant Clergy are, like -wise, under heavy pressure in Germany, as indicatedin the following from Perlin under date of April 1 9to the Vim , Pori,' Times

Ti is not advisable to attempt definite interpreta-tions of certain symbols of Revelation, but it is inter-esting to note how present world conditions harmon-ize with suggestions made years ago by Pastor Rus-sel. One of the most striking developments which i sbecoming increasingly apparent as the Harvest o fthe age progresses to its conclusion in the great tim eof trouble, is the lack of harmony between the tw ogreat branches of nominal Christianity and the civi lpowers, in what has been known for centuries a sChristendom . Many of our readers will remembe rthat shortly before the close of our dear Brothe rRussell 's earthly ministry, he wrote new forewordsto the Scripture Studies . In the new forward t oVolume 4, he made special reference to the 16thchapter of Revelation, in the 14th verse of which i smentioned the "Battle of that Great Day of God Al -mighty ." Brother Russell there interprets the drag-on" as representing the civil powers, the "beast", th eCatholic system, the "False Prophet . " federatedProtestantism .

From the mouths of these three . the revelator sa wthree unclean spirits like frogs proceed, and the ex -planation is given in verse 1=1, that "they are th espirits of devils, working miracles, which go forthunto the kings of the earth and of the whole world .to gather them to the battle of that great day of Go dAlmighty . " Pastor Russell interpreted these evi lfrog-like spirits to he evil doctrines : declaring th edivine right of kings and clergy, that any chang ein the status of civil and religious authorit yin Christendom would result in dire consequencesto the present order of society . While the claimeddivine right of kings and clergy is pretty much of adead issue in the world today, yet the persistence o fclaims of this kind had no small part in bringing th enations to their present paganistic attitude of hatre dtoward all such pretentious viewpoints, and a deter-mination to destroy the order that was based upo nthem .

Commenting on verses 18 and 19 of Revelatio n16, the Watch Tower of July 1883, page 511, says :

An earthquake would symbolize a revolution, an dhere brings to our attention the greatest revolutionwhich ever has or ever will take place on earth . Thi sis the great revolution mentioned by the prophet inwhich every mountain and hill (the high ones )should he brought low, and the valleys (humbl eones) he exalted, bringing all humanity to a corn -

mon level as a preparation for the righteous reign o fthe Lord 's Anointed . Each of the previous plagueshas tended toward this end, and this last results inthe utter overthrow of the triple alliance or associa-tion between the Beast (Papacy), the False Prophet(other religious systems teaching error), and theDragon (civil power), shown under the sixth plague .

`"The Great City here evidently represents theseunited three elements which attempted in union t orule over or control the world . This union and powerwill continue for awhile, but, as here shown, theynil] again separate—be divided into three parts . See-ing that their alliance and mutual support has failedto control and keep subject the restless and turbulen tmasses, each will attempt to adopt an individual pol-icy in their effort to adjust and settle society : buttheir efforts will be fruitless . and will only haste nthe crisis of the hour ; as a consequence, we read .`The city of the nations fell down ." '

Apropos of this suggestion, we have noted inthis column the rapid loss of power and prestige b ythe nominal Christian systems, and their subordina-tion to the civil powers . 11so, that paganism is mak-ing rapid progress in the world . Thus it appearsthat the alliance between the civil power (the drag -on) and the religious elements is being weakened .Further along this line, we cannot but be impressedwith the evidence in the news of the day of shar pdifferences of sentiment and policies developing' be-tween Catholic and Protestant spokesmen, and be-tween the respective interests and activities of thetwo systems . THE word "world" in our textis a translation of the Greek wordaion, the proper meaning of which i s"age." The use of "world" as atranslation of aion is evidently butan attempt of the translators of ourCommon Version to give color to th ethought that at some unknown tim ein the future the planet earth, orthe "world,'' would "`come to anend," being destroyed by literal fire ,and that the saints . the ''wheat" ofthe pa rable front which our text i squoted, would be rescued from th eburning and taken to heaven .

But this passage takes on quite adifferent meaning once we recogniz ethat Jesus is not here alluding to atraditional burning up of the earth ,but is discussing' things that were t otake plaice at the end of an age—an age that began at the first advent ,and would continue until events as-sociated with His second presenc ebrought it to nn end and ushered i nanother age—that great Messiani cperiod during which the divine wil lis to be reestablished throughout th ewhole earth .

To ace clearly what- is implied i nthe Wheat and Tares parable, it i snecessary to take into account th elesson of the entire parable ; and thi scan been seen only in the light of' di-vine-plan truths revealed during th eharvest. The key to a correct under -standing of the whole parable is i n.loses ' identification of the Wheat .which, fie tells us, are the "ehildre nof the Kingdom . "

The fulfilment of ibis part of th eparable is clearly discernable i nhistory, and the success of Satan' smasterful counterfeit of the divin eKingdom is seen in the fact that th eentire nominal church world is no wreferred to in so-called orthodox cir-cles as ' 'Christendom"—Christ ' sKingdom . Yes, while it has bee nclaimed that these tares have bee nthe "children of the Kingdom, "in reality they have been the chil-dren of the wicked one . While the yhave occupied a position in thewheat field, they have had no righ tthere, and, its the parable shows ,nntst be gathered out "first, " or be -fore the wheat occupies its undisput-ed position in the final picture., a slight-bearer, to and blesser :s of th epeople during the thousand-year per-iod of the exalted Kingdom of Go d—for which the Gospel age was se taside as a time of preparation .

This, tlien, is the general lesson o fthe parable . In a word, it was th edevelopment of the future rulershipof the divine Kingdom, that Satanattempted, through it counterfeit ar-rangement, to forstall . However, inthe ''harvest" at the end of theage his Tares are destroyed . whilethe Wheat class are gathered andmade triumphant in the thousand -year Mess-in-Me Kingdom .

Thuswe have a picture of Wheat andTares growing together, and th eMaster said that they were to corr-

An interesting item of the parableis that the Wheat is said to bringforth fruit, even amidst the tares,the tares having no power to chok eoff the fruit-bearing quality of theWheat . Thus it is seen that th eWheat serves a useful purpose eve nbefore the time when it shines fort has the sun in the Kingdom. Thelesson evidently is that the faithful-ness of the Wheat class all dow nthroagla the age in farthing an dbearing- witness to the Kingdommessage, has brought forth other"children of the kingdom, " so tha twhile the Tares have predominated,yet, nevertheless, there has alwaysbeen some Wheat in the field .

Until the Harvest

The Wheat and the Tares were t ogrow together until the harvest . Tha tis, there was to be no clear distinc-tion between the true children of th eKingdom, and the counterfeit . Chris-tendom, with its claims of bein gt']mist 's Kingdom, was to stan dpractically unchallenged. The (worl ddid not desire to challenge the ex-istence of this counterfeit aggrega-tion of tares, and the individua lgrains of true Wheat, holding to th eKingdom truths of the divine Word ,were not in a position to effeetitel yehalleng-e it . "The Reapers Are the Angels "To properly visualize all phases of

the harvest work let us, at this point ,identify the ''reapers ." First, inthis connection, it should be notedthat the Son of man takes the re-spomsibility for the work ; Be is theone who says to the "angels," wh oain the reapers, Do this and do that .in Revelation 14 :14, Jesus is showntwit} a sharp sickle in His hand, go-ing forth to reap ; hence He is th eChief Reaper .

Ilto who are those over tt'hom th eChief Reaper assumes command, the"angels" who perform His biddin gin this great harvest work'? Befor eattempting to decide this point, letIts not() again what- is said to be doneby these reapers . First, there is thecathering and burning of the tare stvlti,h is explained by the Master t ohe the gathering' out of the King-domi all things that offend and whichdo iniquity . Then, there is the gath-ering of the Wheat into the " barn, "scotch Jesus says is the placing o fthe – children of the Kingdom" ina position where they may ''shin e1'orih as the stmt . ,

Note the several phases of workhere outlined seem to call for it wid evariety of "angels," or messengers ,to perform it . The use of the word". angel" need not he taken to mea nthat angelic beings are the reapers .The tern) angel is frequently used inthe Bible to denote a messenger . Therltesseng'er may, or may not he it spir-it being .

Many "angels" are referred to i nthe book of Revelation who evidentlyare not spirit beings . In 2 Corin -thians 12 :7 . the Greek word angelos,translated ''angel" throughout th eVenv Testament, is applied to an in -animate thin'. Here Paul refers toIris partial blindness as a "messen -ger," (Greek angelos, angel) o fSatan to buffet him . Thus we seethat so far as the Scriptural term

plied to any messenger or agencythat may be used to accomplis hthings .

The work of the parable which issaid to be acomplished by the "an-gels" at the command of the Son o fman is, itself, the best guide in de-termining who the angels may be .What are the agencies used for th ebinding and burning of the tares ;and what are the agencies used fo rthe gathering and exaltation of th eWheat? Has either phase of thi swork progressed sufficiently to en -able us to identify the forces bein gemployed ?

Surely, if the harvest work hasprogressed to the point where it he -comes one of the unmistakable sign sof the Master's presence as theChief Reaper, we should be able t osee what agencies are at work inconnection therewith . We hold thatthis is possible today. Briefly, w ewish to state here, that to our un-derstanding, the "angels'' of theparable include all the agencieswhich the Son of man rises to accom-plish the complete wo rk of harvest ,including' the burning of the Tares ,and the exaltation of the -Wheat toKingdom glory ; and that the princi-pal part of this work is accomplish-ed through the proclamation of thetruth by God's consecrated peoplethis side of the van. While this lat-ter phase of the harvest work is th eone with which we are the most eon-e.erned and the beet acquainted, yetwe should not ignore the other phas-es, nor lose sight of the fact thatother agencies are used to carry outthe complete work outlined in th eparable .

The Typical Harvest

There was a harvest at the end o fthe Jewish age . Back there it wasnot a separation of' wheat from im-itation wheat, as in the gospel ag oharvest. The whole Jewish nationwas a Kingdom nation, and so recog-nized by God . There was no eoun-terf.'eit about this claim. But whe nthe Kinng came to them, only a fe wwere in the proper heart attitude t oaccept Him . Be came to His own ,but His own received Him not . Buta. few individuals did receive Him ,and these became the "children" inthe new Kingdom arrangement start-ed at Pentecost_—John 1 :11, 12 .

In Matthew 9 :37 ; Luke 10 :2 ; andJohn 4 :35-38, this gathering of theremnant of fleshly Israel to be thenucleus of the new Kingdom, is de -scribed as a harvest work—a separ-ating of the wheat from the chaff .The chaff constituted a part of th ewheat while developing, but a value -

less part when the time came for th eharvest, hence it was fit only for th eburning, which, eventually, too kplace .

Now the harvest at the end of th eJewish age was accomplished largel yby the proclamation of Kingdo mtruth by the wheat class of tha ttime, the very ones who, later, be-came the "children of the King-dom" in the Gospel age arrange-ment . We wish to emphasize thi spoint for the reason that some hav eclaimed that the reapers in th ewheat and tares parable couldn't b ethe "children of the Kingdom" be -cause tha' ' would mean that th ewheat was reaping itself . Yet, thatis exactly what did take place in th eJewish age harvest . The apostle sand others whom Jesus sent out a sthe harvest messengers at that time ,were, themselves, the wheat class .True, literal wheat could not rea pliteral wheat ; but this is symbolicwheat, and the wheat symbolize speople, people who are faithful t oGod, and these can reap others byproclaiming the Kingdom message .

But there was another phase o fthat typical harvest that was not ac-complished by the symbolic wheat ,and that was the burning of th echaff . And Jesus, the Chief Reape rof that time, was responsible foreven that phase of the work, al -though He used other agencies . InMatthew 3 :12 this matter is outlin-ed, and there John the Baptist ex -plains that Jesus world be the on eto do the entire work of gatherin gthe wheat into His garner, and burn-ing the chaff with unquenchable fire .

But, while Jesus sent out IIis dis-ciples, who, themselves, were th ewheat class, to gather the wheat int othe Lord's garner, these were no tused to burn the chaff . No, if wewere to undertake an identificatio nof any of the messengers used bythe Lor d for this part of that typi-cal harvest wo r k, we would have tosay that Titus and the Roman armydid a large share of it, as they wer ethe ones that made a final end o fthat arrangement which, in the past ,had been God's typical Kingdom .Tares First Gathered and Burne dIn the Gospel age harvest, th e

If we can dependupon the object lesson furnished i nthe Jewish harvest, we must con-clude that the separation of taresfrom the wheat in this end of th eage is accomplished largely by th eproclamation of the Kingdom truth ,the announcement that the King i spresent . This is the sharp sicklethat cuts asunder and makes mani-fest the counterfeit from the real .

This does not mean that individ-ual Christians this side the wail hav ebeen commissioned to determine wh othe tares, or workers of iniquity ,are, and to forcibly eject diem fromthe church, as sonic seem mistakenlyto suppose. No . all that the childrenof the Kingdom have to do with thi swork is the proclaiming of the truth ,and it is by each individual's reac-tion to that message when he hear sit, that he places himself either withthe tares or with the wheat—withthose who are looking for the realKingdom, or with those who prefe rto cast their lot with the devil' scounterfeit arrangement which i sdestined soon to be completely de-stroyed, or "burned . „

It is in keeping with God's meth-ods of doing things all dow nthrough the ages that we concludethat, in large measure, the harvestwo rk of both tares and wheat is ac-complished through the power oftruth—mostly, of course, by theKingdom truth proclaimed by the"children of the Kingdom ;" andalso, to some extent, by the generalenlightenment due in the harvesttime resulting' from the bright shin-ing of the Master's presence . 'Whilethe acceptance of the Kingdom truthmay help to determine who arewheat and who are tares, yet th ediffusion of knowledge along- otherlines seems necessary as a prepara-tion for the final burning of th etares . Thus other "angels" or mes-sengers may properly be include damong those whom the Lord uses toaccomplish the full scope of thiswork .

We can hardly overestimate th epower of truth operating in the livesof human beings . The Creator em-ploys various powerful laws by

(1) Paul was Prepared to Us eHis Whole Being Preaching the Truth

The lengths to which Paul went in this matte rof preaching the Gospel is beautifully shown in theIi ' ci'ntooth rendering of 1 "Thessalonians 2 :6-9 ;"We might have stood on our dignity as Christ ' sapostles . On the contrary, in our relations to youwe showed ourselves as gentle as a mother is when

Seeing thatwe were thus drawn affectionately towards you, i twould have been a joy to us to have imparted toyou not only God ' s Good News. but to have give nour very lives also, because you had become verydear to us. For you remember, brethren . ourlabor and toil : how, working night and day so a snot to become a burden to any one of you, we cam eand proclaimed among you God's Good News "

This is only one of many examples that we se ethroughout Paul 's ministry, which ministry we ar eurged to copy even as his ministry was a copy o fChrist's. A\ hen we, in silent meditation, hold on eof those necessary periods of self-e .Natnination le tus he entirel honest with ourselves and see justhon far our lives and words are devoted to preach-ing the whole Gospel, or whether we are lapsin ginto a condition in which we are satisfied to showforth some selected portions of it with the idea i nmind that others may witness to those parts whic hare less attractive to us . AV'ith such an idea, no mat -ter how sweet it may he to us, goes the insidiou spoison of "spiritual pride" in the idea that we aremore favored of the Lord than those who preac hother phases of the Gospel . Doubtless the one whos etastes run more to those phases of the Gospel whichare measurably shelved or shunned liv us, is equall ycertain that his course is purchasing for hint a posi -tion of superior favor . The desire for the chiefseats of favor did not die with the scribes or Phari-sees, nor with the sons of Zebedee and their mother .

However, the advice. "humble yourselves, " to-gether with that of the .\faster given in \latthew 20 :25-28, has not, in any way, reduced in power o reffect . we quote in part : 'Tut it shall not be soamong you ; but whosoever will be great amon gyou, let him lie your minister : and whosoever wil lbe chief among von, let him be your servant ; evenas the Son of mall came not to he ministered unto ,but ,to minister ." Our eventual position in th eKingdom is to lie determined liy how closely an dwith vvhat effort we have performed the whole will o fGod within the limitations of our earthly tabernacle .

Of course that does not mean that we have t oforce the Gospel upon everyone any more than i tmeans that all must become believers during thi sGospel age . If, however, we let our first love o fGod 's truth become cold or lukewarm it may mea nthat God will need to find another messenger fo rthat particular service which othervyise could hav ebeen ours to perform . brethren, let us all takeltonie to ourselves the lesson of Jeremiah 's state-ment, 'lint His word was in mine heart as a burninglire shut up iii my hones, and 1 was weary with for -bearing, and I could not stay . (3) The Righteousness of God is Reveale dTherein According to Our Faith in GodAnd Christ as our Lord and Saviour .

The first chapter of dark opens with the words ,"The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, theSon of God . " And Paul, in Romans i, reminds usthat if we fulfill the conditions laid down in His wor dthen we, also, arc 1-1is sons and hence, "heirs o fGod . and joint-heirs with Christ . " As, always, whe nGod gives us something valuable or entrusts it t oour care, Ile does it for a purpose—an unselfis hpurpose . A\ ' eytnouth 's New Testament in Moder nSpeech puts our responsibility and relationship t oGod into very clear language . " For this f God ' shousehold] is what the Church of the eves-livin gGod is, and it is the pillar and foundation stone o fthe truth . And, beyond controversy, great is th emystery of our religion . Yes, the head. the heart, the tongue, the whol ebeing. will be cooperating toward a common goal- -that of righteousness and holiness . True faith lead sin just one direction. As the poet puts it, "M yfaith looks up to Thee, " and where w e look, in tha tdirection inevitably we will go. To the extent tha twe find ourselves drifting . hesitating or going inany other direction, we may know that lip service ,blind, unthinking emotion, credulity, etc ., are beingsubstituted in our lives for the genuine holy im -pulses, deliberations and o ats that betoken the realChristian, the up-and-doing child of a great an dglorious heavenly Father .

From another angle . it may be said that we hav eeither a growing or a dying faith. It does not re -main stationery . This does not mean that we jumpfrom one conclusion to another with such rapidit yas to lose run- sense of proportion, nor that we limi tair faith exclusively to our own personal satisfactio n

and give it no room inn which to develop and grov einto a thing of beauty and desirability to behold .

Neither extreme is associated with spiritua lgrowth . A growing organism constantly partake sof food, discarding what is found to be harmful o rof no benefit to itself, and assimilating only tha twhich has been definitely proven by test to b estrengthening and invigorating .

Having proved to the best of our ability every -thing which goes into our faith structure, We hav ea further definite responsibility to our Father and t oour Lord Jesus to keep and defend it until the en dof our course is reached, or, until He has fulfille dthe promise that "if in anything ye he otherwise mind -minded, God shall reveal when this unto you . " --'Phil .3 :15 .

For the Christian . decisions based on the wor dof God and pertaining to the Gospel in all its phases ,are necessary . It is plainly shown that to he "tosse dto and fro . and carried about with every wind o fdoctrine, " whetiher of doctrine pertaining to God ' sPlan or of Tdis character, and to he "ever learning ,and never able to come to the knowledge of thetruth, " etc ., are not pleasing to God . (TEph. 4 :14 ;2 Tim . 3 :7 .) Character is not built by the constan tdodging of an issue. or by avoiding opportunitie sto defend and show forth that which God has com-mitted to our care . Jude 3, 1 1i'ofof translation reads .

"Beloved, my whole concern was to write you on th esuhject of our common salvation, but I am force dto write von an appeal to defend the faith which

has once for all been committed to the saints." Thehabit of evading doctrinal features of the truth hav-ing a prominent position in the Word of God an dof consistently ignoring them on the plea of expedi-ence, personal distaste, etc ., is a form of indifferenceto that which He considers important enough to in -corporate in His Word, and must eventually classif yus as Laodiceans, fit only to be spewed out . How -ever, it is obvious that there are circumstances tha tcall for reticence and it would not be productiv eof good were we to speak our minds. Under suchconditions lack of restraint would not merit God ' sapproval. The spirit of a sound mind—Christia nsanctified common sense and Christlike love—mus tdetermine our course .

Character is built by meeting these matters firml yand in the spirit of true Christian love the divin eway . The double-minded man is unstable in al lhis ways . He is building an unstable character ,certain to fall when crucially and severely tried .And, when each decision is made in sincerity o fheart and in accordance with the understanding per-mitted to us at the time, it becomes our responsibilit yto God to stand fast upon it until He, in His infinit ewisdom, enables us, by whatever means or metho dHe may choose, to see that our position is inhar-monious with some portion of His \\'ord . Any othercourse of procedure which causes us to reverse o rabandon our position, can have none other than adisastrous effect upon our faith and character struc-ture .

It might be said that the steps leading to Christiancharacter development are :

I To study God ' s \\ c ord with the thought in mind ,"Thy will, not mine, he done . "

2 To meditate upon and pray over what we hav estudied .

3 To come to decisions based upon the previou ssteps .

4 To abide by those decisions and to take positiv eaction in harmony with His Word when and if nec-essary, regardless of what it may cost us in the favo rof the world or even among our brethren .

5 To he ready at all times to be shown from th eScriptures wherein we have erred : and, when slimy n ,to pttt His Word above self(ish) interest or de-sire . even as We put it above the favor of other swhen it is necessary for us to do so .

We know of Paul 's strength of character . Crasssections of it are placed before us in the passage stelling how he defended these things committed t ohis charge, how he withstood Peter to the face fo rhis dissembling, and in his epistles to the Corinthia nchurch . He might easily have evaded the issues b yexplaining that these things were causing contro-versy and division so he would not touch upon them ,or that he was merely an apostle to the Gentiles .while Peter ministered more especially to the lews ,and have let it go that way . Many of his hardship s:amid have been avoided by using human logic (an dPaul was no mean logician) but he had other an dhigher standards and he stood lty them. He fought

the good fight even unto the end . He was also lov-ing and gentle . However, the various sides of hi scharacter were not in opposition—they worked to-gether .

It takes more than mere determination to buildChristian character . The most ruthless character sof history had great determination and the will tosucceed . In standing by. and defending our faith ,our Scripturally proved standards, do we grant ou rbrother the same rights and privileges? Or do werequire him to live up to what we have proved fo rourselves instead of what he has established in hi sown . mind ? Our brother is responsible to our Fathe rfor his faith and conduct according to what he under-stands, not for our conduct, etc . We may not, withScriptural approval, support our brother and hi sactivities in important things contrary to what w eunderstand, for that would be pleasing men rathe rthan God, putting policy . expedience or "respep tof persons ' , above principle no matter how much itmight he glossed over with fair words and pleasan tphrases . Nevertheless, he is a brother and, as such ,is entitled to our love, patience, and consideration .Therein is the love of God above that of mankind .Which kind fills our hearts ?

(6) Rest—the Peace of God that Passet hAll Understanding—h with ThemThat have True Faith in the Gospel .

"Great peace have they which love Thy law : andnothing shall offend them . " " Thou wilt keep him i nperfect peace, whose mind is staved on '[ltee : he--cause he trusted' in Thee."—Psa . 119 :16 ; Isa . 26 :3 .

The thought of rest in the Gospel is not so directlystated in the passage in Romans as the other point sarc ; it comes from the text in Hebrew's quoted i nthe discussion of faith . Nevertheless. it is such anall-important point to the Christian that it woul dhe a serious omission if its contemplation were ne-glected . In these trying clays of severe shaking i nconnection with both earthly and spiritual thing sthere is no substitute for "the peace of God . whichpasseth all human s understanding . " Without I twhat have we-:' How could we hope to stand inthis "evil day" :—Eph . 6 :13 .

This peace of God does not come to us throug hdistorted thinking nor through conclusions forme dupon an incorrect basis nor through blind credulity .It comes only when we have a Scriptural basis for

our faith, when that faith becomes so real and vita lto us that it becomes conviction and when that con-viction brings our every thought, word and actinto harmony with it . To do that, often requiresmuch suppression of self ; it may cost us much intime, money, influence, external peace : it may costus temporary or permanent loss of friendship an dfriendly feeling among the world, among our closefrjends and relatives or even among some who ,like ourselves, also name the name of Christ bu twho haven't fully submerged their personalities andnatural bent into His . But whatever may be itscost to us, it is well worth the price . ".l'hat kind o f

peace the peace of God—enabled our Lord Jesu sto walk in the path of suffering from Jordan t o

Calvary, and that same hind of peace will bring us .also, through this veil of tears to a well clone, tho ugood and faithful servant . " To sum it up : Faithfu lobedience and loyalty to all of Nis revealed word .to His Gospel, is the price of that "peace of Go dwhich passeth all 'human understanding . "

(7) The ChristianIs Not Ashamed of the Gospe l

Of Jesus it is written : He "made 'Himself of noreputation, and took upon Ilim the form ot a ser-vant, and was made in the likeness of men : andbeing found in fashion as a man, He humbled Him -self, and became obedient unto death, even the deathof the cross . " (Phil . 2 :7 .5 .) And why did Ile d othis? We find two very plain answers in the Gospe laccording to St . John . "I do always those thing sthat please Him the Father -J ." (8 :29.) When facin gdeath before Pilate Ile was more specific . "To thi send was I born, and for this cause carte I into th eworld, that I should bear witness unto the truth .Everyone that is of the truth heareth \1t voice . "(18 :37 .) Pilate asked, "What is truth?" but did no twait for the answer . Jesus said, "Thy Word i sTruth . " (17 :17.) Four times Paul speaks of th etruth of the Gospel . (Gal. 2 :5,14 ; Fph . 1 :13 ; Col .1 :5 .) We quote from Ephesians 1 :13 : "In whomJesus ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word

of truth, the Gospel of your salvation ." It ratherlooked as if Pilate, like many another, would lik eto know the truth lint wasn ' t very anxious to shar ethe shame and humiliation which he felt were a tCached to that witness . Jesus bore the humiliatio nhat was in no wise ashamed . "Then said Jesus unt oIIis disciples, If any man will come after 'Ale, le thint deny himself, and take up his cross . and follow\ l e ." —Matt . 16 :24 .

The Scriptures tell us that there is 'a time t okeep silence, and a time to speak . ' and there are man ytunes when silence is the proper course for us t o

pursue . (Eccl . 3 :7 .) The truth should never b eforced upon anyone, and of Jesus it is said that ."Ile shall not strive, nor cry ; neither shall an yman hear His voice in the streets . " (Matt . 12 :1() . )There will lie many other times when we shoul dnot only be prepared to speak hut should speak . Atsuch times if we do not speak He will have caus e

to he ashamed of us . In all these things we should

he slow to judge or condemn others, hut shoul dnever be hesitant or sloe- about analyzing and cri-ticizing ourselves . Luke 9 :26 reminds us of the im-portance of this matter : "For whosoever shall b eashamed of Me and of My words of him shall th eSon of man he ashamed, when He shall conic in Hi sown glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy an -gels ." Let us keep the heart clean and pure, an dthe mouth (and our lives, too) an ever alert -wit-ness for the truth which has heel] committed to ou rcharge . (1 Tiles, . 1 :4 .) On the witness stand, a per -son is charged to tell the truth, the whole truth an dnothing hint the truth . Sometimes we wonder i fthat would not make a fine motto for the walls o fottr hearts .

Paul tells us how important both the heart andthe mouth are if we are to he among those no tashamed . "For with the heart man helieveth untorighteousness : and with the month confession is madeunto salvation . For the Scripture saith, "'Whosoeve rbelieveth on llho shall not he ashamed . " (Rolm . 10 :10 . 11 .1 Can we. from thy heart, say . " 1 am notashamed of the Gospel, nny lips and daily life sho wthat I am not ashamed of any portion of God ' s'Word ; and my every act . word, and thought is suc hthat the laird will not he ashamed of me in that day" ?

Our immediate answer would probably he an em-phatic No, lint yet some twill he able to say at th eend of the course, "Yes," not because they did no tslip and fall many times, as do we all, but becaus ethey learned the importance of being ever quick t ogo to the throne of heavenly grace and to confes sthose failures, seeking forgiveness . These have keptand are keeping the robe of Christ's righteousnesswwithout spot or wrinkle or any such thing. Let us .he sure to do this and He will not number us withthose who were ashamed of His message, and of '

(8) Faith is Necessary, But Not Faith Alone-

"\V'hat cloth it profit, my brethren, though a ma nsayeth he hath faith, and have not works? can fait hsate him' Even so faith, if it bath not wo r ks, i s(lead, being alone . ' (ea . a man may say, Thou has tfaith, and I have works : spew me thy faith withou ttht works. and 1 will show thee my faith by m yworks . The works we do here on earth, if acceptable t oGod, will he so because His strength enabled us to •perform them and because Ile is a very patient, toy-ing Father . HE way of the Christian is a strange way :=1l In everything it is so different from the way

of the world that those of the world canno tunderstand it . He lives differently from

those of the world, and he dies differently . He doesnot find his daily pleasure in the things that pleas ehis flesh, but in the things he feels will please God .He does not seek death in the easiest way, but i swilling to die in the most painful way, if that be th edivine will for him .

It is impossible for a man of the world to thin kof any person desiring to be crucified ; and yet inour text we find the Apostle Paul expressing thi sdesire, and counting it above everything else a ssomething to glory in (literally, boast about) . Whyshould Paul have expressed himself thus' It is no tgenerally recognized by the nominal Christian tha teveryone who is to be with Christ in glory must becrucified with Him, here on this earth . He mus tbear this crucifixion not of compulsion as thoughit were something he is obliged to do, but voluntaril yand as a thing to be desired . Crucifixion is a slow ,lingering death : some having been known to linge ron as long as three or four days after having bee nnailed to the cross, thus suffering untold agonies .And the crucifixion of the true Christian is, like -wise, a long and lingering death, lasting throughou this Christian life . It is not something that is ove rwithin a moment . but something that will be com-pleted only when his earthly life is fully sacrificed .

All the experiences God permits to come to aChristian are what constitute the cross which cruci-fies him : and so every experience that he may havethat will in any way put to death his natural ten-dencies, is an occasion for thankfulness . With this

in mind, Paul could say : "We glory in tribulation salso, knowing that tribulation worketh patience "` cheerful endurance or constancy] . (Rom . 5 :3 . )

Again . James says : "Blessed [happy] is the ma nthat endured] temptation : for when he is tried, h eshall receive the crown of life, which the Lord bathpromised to them that love Him . " (Jas . 1 :12 .) I twas because of this that James urged the follower sof Christ to "Count it all joy when ye fall into diver stemptations . " (Jas . 1 :2 .) Let us seek to grasp thesethings more -fully . To count it all joy when we fal linto- divers temptations surely is contrary to ourhuman nature .

Again Paul says : "Most gladly will I rather glor ymy infirmities ." (2 Cor. 12 :9 .) Why? Practicall y

everyone admits that lie has infirmities, and will doalmost anything to rectify them . But here is a manwho says : I rejoice in them, because I know the yare for my good . Brethren, if we can learn the les-sons God intends for us to learn in these trying ex-periences, we . too, will come to rejoice in them andthank God for them . All these experiences makethe cross that crucifies our natural desires, and w eshould say from the heart : "Rather than bewail thes eexperiences, I will make theta a cause for boasting ,for they are crucifying my flesh . "

We look back over the years of our Christianway and now we can see how valuable the experi-ences of these later years have been in developin g'love .' the character-likeness to our Lord . Some ofus may have thought we were ready for the Kingdo mback in 1914, and that we were ready then to re-ceive the crown that God has promised to the faith-ful . ttl. Ihit the experiences of these recent years hav erevealed certain thing; of which we were trot aware i nlust years . What brought these unrealized things toour attention' Was it not the experiences throug hwhich we gassed : Perhaps we may have somethin gthat we value . something very precious and whic hw e think is pile ( ' gold. Supposing we put that pre -()mu- metal in the crucible and apply fire and dis-cover that it C an alloy, that other minerals and inn -purities as( mixed with it .

We would feel veryunfelt ,listppoin ;ed . We thought it the finest gold ,and yet it vyas an alloy ; it wasn ' t pure gold after all .What revealed this impurity ? It was the fire thatwas applied to it . Sc it is with nnr Christian life ;the fire brings to the surface these impure things an dother foreign elements of which we were unaware ;and 1_a ;n~~ nos we have them affords its the opportun-ity of overcoming them .

We need the try-ing experiences . and as we see the changes that theseare making in its, we rejoice with thanksgiving, say-ing : "I trill rejoice in mine infirmities, " knowingthat tlhe way to the crown is by way of the cross .Otte desire to he a Christian implies that we are will-ing to go through the same experiences that Chris twent through . It means that we intend to hear across c yen as I le bore a cross . What is the purpos eof the cross? The purpose of the cross is to crucif your humanity . Our desire to he a Christian includesour willingness to hear the cross of Christ .

What is this cross? When Paul wrote these word s(lid he refer to the cross of calvary? Was he think-ing of that wooden cross upon which Christ die dNo, indeed, that cross would not crucify Paul, no rwill it crucify us . The cross of Calvary has becom ea fetish with many . They have made it a thing to headored. But that cross upon which Jesus was cru-cified was no more holy than any other wooden cros sand so, Paul was not speaking of that cross whenhe said : "God forbid that I should glory, save in th ecross of our Lord Jesus Christ ." (Gal . 6 :14 .) Thecross that he referred to was the cross that (-7n'is thad laid on him . You will recall that when Chris tspoke to Ananias on that day when He sent him toSaul, Ile said . "I spew him how great thing she must suffer for ;Mlv name's sake ." (Acts 9 :10-16 . )There the cross vvas laid on Paul . And through al lthe Years that followed, all his experiences were hal-lowed by the cross that was laid on him . Thus he

could say : "God forbid that I should glory, save i n

the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom th eworld is crucified unto me . "

Faith rejoices not only in the glory that is to b erevealed when eye shall be with Christ, but in th etrials, difficulties . sorrows and sufferings incidenta lto the preparation for that glory . There are som ewho just merely think of going to heaven, of bein gan angel standing before the throne playing on a harpof gold, and singing praises to God ; but faith real-izes that the way to heaven is the way that Jesuswent . We read : "Who for the joy that was se tbefore Him endured the cross . despising the shame . "Mel) . 12 :2 .) The cress is not only the entrance t othe narrow way, but it is also the exit from that nar-row way . We enlist accept the cross before wetake the first step in the narrow way : and it will bethe hearing of that cross all along the way in the foot -prints of the Master that will win for us this gloriou ssalvation .

We must not only take up our cross, but we mosthear- it . That is . the cross is to be borne continuous-ly : and . as we have seen, it is not the cross of Cal-ary that we are to glory in, but the cross of Christ.

The cross of Calvarywas the one on which Jesus finished His earthl ylife : bin ) esns 'was hearing a cross for three and one -hall Years before He was nailed to the one on Cal -Yarv 's hill . \s a matter of fact, He had alread yYielded op the major portion of His life before H ereached Calvary. That cross of Calvary was merel ythe ending of that life. and was especially for thepurpose of redeeming Israel from the curse of th elaw . lesu- did not need to die on a wooden cross topay the ransom price . 1Ic could have redeemed th eworld in just Yielding np His human life in an yother way. Put since the nation of Israel was underthe curse of a broken law, there was need for som eone to bear that curse before there could be any hop eof saltation for that nation . Ili,- death on tile crossof Calvary provided the :Weans by which that curs e

could be met, even as we read, "Cursed is every

one that hangeth on a t r ee." (Gal . 3 :13 .) So it must

be with those who follow in His footsteps. Thecross that He was bearing for three and one-halfyears has been laid on His disciples and will meantheir crucifixion. That was the real cross of ou rLord Jesus Christ . And as we see our need of thatcross . we will rejoice in it and not complain .

Trials are Valuable

We are apt to complain about our trials and thinkthat we are enduring many hardships, wishing ghatwe might be relieved of them ; but after we reachthe point where we can look upon our trials as bless-ings, we will not feel like complaining about them .lyery painful experience that comes to its becaus eof our efforts for the cause of God and Flis truthis an occasion for rejoicing . We ;rust not expec tthe fle sh to rejoice in the cross : it never will, be -cause it is not natural for it to do so. Rather, i tis the new creature that rejoices . Paul did not sa ythe words of our text frorn the standpoint of hi shumanity . In fact, his humanity had to lie brough tinto subjection to the new mind before he could sa ythat. That was the expression of the new creature—a desire that the flesh be crucified . So we see thatthe value of these trying experiences in our life i ssomething really for which to be thankful .

We want to be like Christ. We want to be withIIm 1 . And the only way we can he like Him is tohave the same experiences that He had. So ourFather when lie chose the church said, paraphras-ing : "I am going to have every one of them conform-ed to the image of My Son." (Rom . 8 :29.) Thiscan only be (lone by permitting the same experiencesthat Christ underwent . ""Though He were a Son ,vet learned He obedience by the things which H esuffered ." (Id eh. 5 :8 .) We can find some little les-sons in nature that bring this truth to our minds ina very forceful way. The facts about the gorsebush, or furze as it is also called, are very interest-ing. It is a native of southern Europe and grows i nwaste places . It is a rather oddly formed hush withleaves, that are very sharp pointed . Some call theseleaves, thorns . The fall conies and those thorns d onot drop off : they just stay on that bush all throughthe winter, becoming, sharper and sharper, so thatwhen spring comes they are almost like needles . It'snakes a most forbidding hush to look at ; but as th espring advances and one looks closely, he will se etwo little fluffy balls growing from these little spikes .As the warm weather comes on, those little ball s

burst out into the most beautiful yellow flowers .That forbidding looking thing has become a thing o fglory. And so the apostle says : `'No ' no chasteningfor the present seemed] to he joycnts . but grievous :nevertheless afterward it yielded) like the two littl ehalls of the furze] the peaccal,lc fruits of righteou sncss unto then] which are exercised thereby.. Heh:12 :11 .

Now take the very hardest thing in your life—the thing that is the driest trying to von . that whichcauses the most angttish to the soul, the thing tha tyour flesh so desires to be rid of, that would be s opleased if- it were no . longer hampered with that im -pediment—and accepting this as a cross, you may ex-

pect to use it for the purpose of making it a gloriou >triumph to you, a thing of beauty, a thing much t ohe desired . In this experience, like the gorse bush ,Cod can bring to fruition and bloom these product sof His spirit and that beauty of true holiness tha twill endure to all eternity to His glory and praise .This is the real value of the cross—these trying ex-periences that will bring forth fruit to His glory .There is in our life a springtime . There must b esuch a condition if we ever expect to grow into thefulness of Christ . Out of this hard, callous thin gthere must be some indication of another life that,s in us, and which this springtime experience wil lexpand until it passes into the shadow of the cross ,until it enables you to appreciate the value of tha tcross .

The Blessing of Giving

Many of us think that our Christian life is a lif eif receiving from God those things that we call bless-ings, but the blessedness of receiving is not the onl y'thing that God has for us A new world lies beyon dthis and this is the world of giving . "It is moreblessed to give than to receive ." (Acts 20 :35.) Andso this life that is hallowed by the cross finds itsel fgiving to God in surrender, and giving to our breth-ren in sacrifice . That is the truly Christian life .Some blessings arc gained by struggling for them .Some of the blessings that come to us require us t ostruggle for them, and they are gained as we wait i nprayer for them. These prayers are not for thing sthat please the flesh, but for things that will glorif yGod. The means by which we enjoy the richness o fGod's favor is that of lying submissive in His hands ,and saying, "Thy will be done ." This is bearing thecross .

Enduring our trials with patience is not enoug hto merit the "well done, good and faithful servant . "You will never receive that commendation by jus tenduring trials with ordinary patience, complacency ,but by enduring them with Biblical patience whic hcarries with it the meaning of cheerfulness and thank -fulness, and being able to say with St . Paul, "There -fore will I rather glory in my infirmities" becaus eI realize that these are the cross that is putting t odeath this human nature . You see then, beloved,that if we realize that our sacrifice must he by way o fthe cross, we will rejoice in the cross . that if werealize that the crucifixtion is going on in our life ,we will rejoice in that crucifixtion .

We have the same lesson pictured in the Burn tOffering . When Paul wrote in Romans 12 :1, " Ibeseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies ofGod, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice .holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonabl eService, " he saw in his mind the burnt offering. "tonknow that the burnt offering was a continuous sac-rifice ; one lamb in the morning to last until th eevening, and another lamb in the evening to last unti lthe morning. So on that altar there was always aBurnt Offering. So your burnt offering is a livingsacrifice. That is, you are living your sacrifice .Now what consumed that sacrifice placed on tha taltar? Now this fire on the brazen altar was burnin gcontinuously . The priest in all his sacrifices use dthe fire from this :Alin- . It will he recalled bow o nthe Day of Atonement, the priest tool : a censer ofcoals—they came from the brazen altar—and too kthem to burn the incense . It was the fire that mad ethe sweet odor . There was no other fire that coul dbe used . Some of the dear ones today are usin gstrange fife This means death . What would h estrange fire today? If this sacrifice is being con-sumed in any way not ordered by Him, it is bein gconsumed by strange fire . You may he using you renergies in some movement that you feel will be o fgreat advantage to others . It is costing you tim eand money- and strength and health . But if thiswork is not directed by God, it is not fire from th ebrazen altar ; it is strange fire that will not he ac-ceptable to God . God says it must he offered byfire from this brazen altar . The Value of the Cross

There arc many other Scriptures that bring thissame thought to our attention . In Psalms 40 :15 weread . 'lake us g?ad according to the days wherei nthou bast afflicted ms, and the years wherein we hav eseen evil . " We might naturally ask, Why woul dthe Psalmist write thus? And the answer would be ,Because he was the mouthpiece of God, and, speak-ing under inspiration, sets forth the value of the cros sby which we are crttcilie :1 . Are we learning this lesso nof the value of the cross? Arc we rejoicing' in thes eexperiences that harass us? These vexations ma yhe in the home, among the friends, in ot' busines slife . Learn to rejoice in them. Sometimes we ma yask, 'Now hmg must these trying experiences cort-tinue They will continue until the flesh is cru-cified, until the entire sacrifice is consumed . If youhave sonic particular tendency that is un-Christlike ,then God is going to bring about such experiences a swill eliminate this front your life, that will crucifyit, so that the time will come vyheu yott will say .''Father, I thank Thee for these experiences thatyou are permitting me to have, that are putting m yflesh to death ." "If ye endure chastening, God deal-eth with yon as with sons ; for what son is he whomthe Father chasteneth not ?" (Neb . 12 :7 .) Don't yo usee that this cross is an evidence of God's love fo ryou? Again in the l 1 th verse of this chapter : "Nowno chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous ,but grievous : nevertheless afterward it yieldeth th epeaceable fruits of righteousness unto them which ar eexercised thereby . And so, if we have learned this lesson, if we wan tto have our flesh eliminated, then we must realiz ethe need of the cross, and we will say as Paul did :"God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross o four Lord Jesus Christ ." For a per-iod, however, the church had to hold its own agains tthe might of Rome, which seemed determined t owipe the very name of Christ off the earth for ever .To stand for the truth at that time meant impris-onment and death for nearly all who espoused itscause . TIE caption of this lesson .` 'Testing Discipleship byService," was not chosenby us. We might rather

have named the lesson, "A Testof Consecration ." Evidently th eyoung man thought that he wa sconsecrated, and according to hislight and knowledge probably hehad been. But a test was placedupon him that he little anticipated .I-I e wanted to gain eternal life, buthe wanted to hold on to his richesat the same time . He was not will-ing to become poor in this world ' sgoods in order to attain the king-dom .

Probably there have been man ylike the rich young man from tha tday to this . Jesus counselled Hisfollowers . saying, "Lay not up foryourselves treasu r es upon earth ,where thieves break through an dsteal : hut lay up for yourselvestreasures in heaven where neithe rmoth nor rust (loth corrupt, an dwhere thie~ es do not hi-calk throug hnor steal : for where your treasur eis, there will your heart be also . Earthly riche sare frequently quite transitory :they may be here today and gonetotuorroty : but the heavenly trea-sure is something that remains .

The only way of life that the ric hyoung man had known anythingabout was the way of the Mosai cLaw . Ile had heard this from hi syouth up. Evidently the preceptsof the Law- had appealed to him asbeing right and good in every re-spect . He had tried to put Go dfirst, and sedulously had avoide devery form of idolatry . Ile hadbeen a Sabbath keeper . He hadnot defrauded his neighbor no rcoveted his neighbor 's goods. Hemust have been an exemplary char-acter according to the standards o fthe Law . But Jesus could read theheart . He knew that there was a

form of idolatry in the young manthat had not been openly revealed ,Love of money was strongly in -trenched in the mind of this nobleyouth before Him . This applican tfor eternal life must be made to se ehimself exactly as he was . SoJesus applied the test ; and theyoung man went away sorrowful ,for he had great possessions .

Some think that this rich youn gman may have been Lazarus . thebrother of Mary and Martha ,whom, at a later time, Jesus raisedfrom the sleep of death . The nar-rative says that Jesus loved him ,and we are told in the Scripture sthat Jesus loved Lazarus ; and ther eis reason for believing that Lazaruswas rich in this world's good sHowever, while the identity of th eperson makes little difference, th etruth which the Master so snec.int-lv emphasized is of great signifi -

c ance .

The Needle ' s Eye was a smal lgate in the wall of the city, and inorder to get through such a gatea camel had to kneel down andhave its load taken off . Likewise ,a rich man has to unburden himsel fof his riches before he can pas sthrough the "strait" and narrowgate to the kingdom. Actually, hehas to make over his possessions t othe Lord, giving up his own righ tto them . Then the Lord may nottake them away from him, but maypermit him to act as a steward o fthem. HE scribes and Phariseestried to entrap Jesus byasking Him questions cal-culated to get Him into

trouble either with the Jews orRomans . If He had said it woul dbe all right to pay tribute to Caesar ,

the Jews ,,would have accused Himof treason, and hence He woul dlose His influence with the people .if He had said it was wrong to paythe tribute money, He could havebeen accused of sedition and ge tinto trouble with the power o f

Rome. So the question was a \er ysubtle one. Jesus, however, sawright through it . He knew that th escribes were not asking for infor-mation, but were merely trying totrap flint . So He answered themwith wonderful wisdom, and i nsuch a manner that no fault coul dpossibly be found with His reply .The enemies of Jesus could no ttake Him until the proper tim edivinely forecast had arrived .

The result of this condi-tion is that the young form habit sof selfishness . because they hav ebecome accustomed to have thei rown way in everything. This i svery deplorable, for habits formedin the early years of a child 's lifebecome so entrenched in the min dthat they become very difficult t oovercome .

'The four Hebrews of our lesso nwere very noble young men . Nodoubt intemperance abounded i nthe king's palace. These youngmen; knew that over-indulgencewas enfeebling to both body andmind. They were convinced tha tsimple fare was the best . They de-sired to develop their highest ca-pacities, and to be thoroughly effi-cient in every way . They, therefore ,took a stand which was most con -mendable . and which affords a fin eexample for us today .

The result of the experiment wa sthat the four Hebrews were foun dto be finer in appearance than th eothers of their race. and vastlysuperior in wisdom and knowledg eto all the wise men of the kingdom .The Lord, approving of their con -duct, blessed them in the cours epursued . They were not living forself-gratification but to honor theGod of their fathers and thus give

The Apostle Paul compares th eChristian's course to a race . Nodoubt, he had the Olympic game sin mind. These contests were en-tered into by the best athletes in allthe land. In order that one mighthave a chance for success he hadto train most carefully . Both spee dand endurance had to be develope dto a large degree. He could not in-dulge in the luxuries of life tha tother people might enjoy . As astimulus to his fidelity in rigid ad-herence to the rigors of his trainingperiod, the prize of victory w aever held before his mental vision .It might indeed be only a chaplet ofoak or laurel leaves, but it made hi sname known far and wide. Il ewas striving for a name and a dis-tinction that was greatly coveted ;the reward was thought to be wel lworth while, though temporary inthat the contests were repeated insucceeding Olympics (every 4years . )

The Apostle says that the prizeheld out for the Christian is muchgreater and grander- than the Olym-pic prize of his day . It is indeedan "incorruptible" one, a "crownof life" eternal in the heavens . "(James 1 :12 ; Rev . 2 :10 ; 2 Cor .5 :1 .) It is worthy of our best en-deavors . Its possession will mak ethe trials of this present life seeminsignificant indeed . We havesome real enemies to fight, for th eworld, the flesh and the devil mak ethe battle very hard and trying a ttimes, but thanks be to God, whichgiveth 'us the victory through ou rLord Jesus Christ."--1 Cor. 1.5 :57 .

Therewere many Simons in that day, an dmost of the commentators considerthis Simon to be different fromSimon the leper, at whose home th eincident occurred which is given i nour lesson . There are other point sof difference, too, which seem t omake the account given ill Luke 7not to be the same as that of ourlesson. In I,uke 7, the womanwho anointed Jesus was a sinner .That statement may mean merel ythat she was not living up to th estrict requirements of the Law .However, Simon the Pharisee wa snot pleased with the woman ' s act .and Jesus, turning to him, said ."Simon, Seest thou this womanI entered into thine house, thougayest Ile no water for My feet :but she bath vhashed My feet withtears, and wiped them with th ehairs of her head . John informs us that the woma nreferred to in the narrative! wasMary, the sister of Martha an dLazarus. We are elsewhere toldthat Jesus loved these three per -sons. Then they escaped into themountains where they remained until the search forthem was over .

"Now the Israelites had to cross over the rive rIordan, and there was no bridge. 1iut the Lordtold them to go right ahead and follow, the priestswho were bearing the ark of the covenant And the na wonderful thing happened ; for as soon as the sole sof the feet of the priests who carried the ark of theLord touched the water, a dry place was forme dright across to the other shore, and the people wer eall able to walk across in perfect safety' . It is be-lieved that about eight miles above this place, a par tof the mountain had fallen into the river, formin ga dam, which blocked the water for a time, givin gall the Israelites a chance to pass over . However ,this was certainly a miracle that God performed .

"T guess you have never seen a walled city . Yousee we don't have cities like that in this country ,today . It is a city that has a great wall of ston ehilt all around it . There were many such towns andcities in ancient times. The wall was built for the

purpose of keeping out enemies, Now the Israeliteshad to capture a city of this kind. It was calle dJericho. Its wall was very high, and on top of thewall were soldiers who could shoot arrows a longdistance and could hurl down stones and other mis-siles on the besiegers . Now, how could the Israelite sever capture such a place as that? Well, they couldnot have done so without the help of God . But Godis always ready and willing to help His people whenHe wants them to do something . And one day whenJoshua was looking at the city of Jericho, he saw aman with a drawn sword in his hand . And Joshuasaid, 'Are you for us or for our enemies?' And hewarner replied, `I am the captain of the hosts of h eLord .' Then Joshua fell on the earth and yc',r-shipped, for he knew that this soldier before him ha dbeen sent by the Lord .

"The Lord, through His servant, told Joshua tha tthe people must march all around the city . Th epriests should go before the rest, and should blo wthe trumpets . They were to march around the cit yonce a day for six days . and on the seventh day, theywere to march around it seven times . We can im-agine that we see this nighty host t ramping, tramp-ing, tramping every day . and doing nothing else. ex-cept the priests blowing their trumpets . No suc hthing had ever taken place before. Truly, God ha sstrange ways of doing things And we have ahvmnwhich says .

I fancy tha tsome of the people thought it was just a silly, stupi dthing they were doing . And it looked like that, in -deed . We can imagine what the King of Jerich othought about it . Up there from the top of his palacehe was looking down upon this scene . On the firstday, no doubt he thought the Israelites would attackthe city . but they did not do so . Well, perhaps hethought they were looking for a weak place in th ewalls ; but, apparently there was no weak place. Thesecond day they march, and again the king and hi scourtiers wonder what on earth they are doing al lthis tramping for . Every day for six days the sam ething goes on, until no doubt it would appear to hea huge joke . It might have given the impression ,though. that Israel had a huge army . Perhaps too ,the king might have got the thought that the Israel-ites could not capture the place ; so they might a swell pack up their tents and go back to the land fro mwhich they came . Seven times on the seventh day 'How utterly ridiculous! And now the mighty hos tstands still . There is not a sound . And the greatwall of Jericho stands there as strong as ever . Butnow, something very unusual is about to take place .

And now they blow them, and the sound reach -es to the king's palace and to the monarch's ears .And now Joshua raises his hand, and cries aloud ,'Shout, for the Lord hath given you the city !' All, lie knew then that his citywas doomed, and that his end was near .

"Now there were other places to captu r e beside sJericho, and one of these was a town called Ai . Sof calma sent about three thousand men to take Ai ,hat these men were defeated and fled before the sol e(hers of Ai . When Joshua realized what had take nplace, he felt: quite disheartened ; for he had believe dthat the Israelites would overthrow, all their enemies .So he told the Lord about it and how discourage dhe was. "I liked it where the people came out of Egypt " ,said Ruth . "T-here was such a crowd of them, an dthey had their donkeys and their camels and theircows, and they were ' singing and shouting becaus ethey were so happy . "

"I liked the part about Jericho, " said John. "Thatold king thought he was . .so safe just because he hadbuilt a high wall around his city . But God didn' tcare much for his wall, but knocked it down as easilyas if it had been made of sand . That was a good one .all right . 1 heard a mail say one day that it was th eshout of the people thaw' caused the air to tremble andsomehow the hibrations, knocked the wall down, but .it wasn't so, was it, Uncle Eb?"

"No . it wasn't," replied Uncle Eb . "The word youused should have been vibrations, not hibrations . Vi-brations, indeed, are just waves in the air . But theBible gives us to understand that God or His angeloverthrew the walls of . Jericho. And now that wehave the Israelitessafely deposited in the land o fCanaan, we'll leave them there for the present, and .so I'll bid you all good-night ."

TAKE COURAGE

ISCOW AGLMLNT is one of the deadlies tenemies of the Christian. It not only re-

s,aj7 tardy progress in the narrow way, but wil lrob us of the prize entirely if we do no t

avail ourselves of every means of divine grace to for-tify us against its chilling' assaults . Frequently theunexpected hardships of the Christian life result i ndiscouragement . If it were possible to know in ad-vance just what will happen from day to day wecould be better prepared to meet even the trying e xperiences, with a greater degree of complacency an dfortitude. But this is not the Lord's way of dealin gwith His people . He wants its to exercise faith i nI-Iim, and to be assured that. His divine wisdom wil lnot permit anything to come to us but what wil lultimately work out for our highest good as ne wcreatures in Christ Jesus .

During April, friends throughout the world cele-brated the memorial of our Lord's death . In con-nection with this memorial doubtless all recalle dbow the disciples deserted the Master during thos etrying last hours of His earthly ministry . They hadnot expected their Lord to Ire taken from them an dcrucified, hence they were bewildered and discourag-ed—at a loss to understand the full significance o fwhat it meant . They had accepted Him as the Mes-siah, and why should the Messiah he crucified ?Tame, the disciples were not at that time spirit-begot-ten ; nevertheless, in their experience we have anillustration of how trials often come to all of theLord's people because of unexpected developments .

These unexpected thingsmay be merely inciden-tal experiences of every-day life, or they may be o fa more general character, affecting the whole churchof God in the same way . In this latter respec tmany of "the children of the Kingdom" have ha dtheir faith most severely tested during the last twent yor more years in connection with the apparentlylong wait for the full establishment of the divin ekingdom . To many the "vision" has seemed t o"tarry," yet it has not actually tarried . It wouldseem that the Lord has tested all of His people alongthis same line, Think how Long' Abraham had t owait for the birth of Isaac after God promised himthat he was to have a seed . This was an unexpectedtrial to Abraham, yet he "staggered not" at the prom-ises of God . Later he was unexpectedly asked t ooffer up Isaac as a sacrifice, but his faith triumphe dagain. Finally Abraham, as well as all of the An-cient Worthies, "died in faith, not having' receive dthe promise . "

While the brethren generally at one time looke dforward to the possible consummation of their hope sin 1914, there is no valid reason why we should b ediscouraged because the divine plan has seemed t otarry . God's nays are so much higher than ou rways that frequently it requires years of waiting o nHutt, and observing the manner in which Ile works ,in order to comprehend more fully the marvelou sway in which His plan develops. Thus today w ecan look back over twenty or more years of transi-tional changes and see accomplished what in ou rminds we thought should have been completed in afew short months .

God could have informed the disciples in advancethat their Messiah was to be taken away from themand crucified, but it was better for them to experi-ence disappointment, and later learn how much high-er God's ways were than their own . Likewise theLord could have informed His people in advancethat the gradual overthrow of Satan's empire woul dcover a period of many years, instead of merely afew short months ; hut it was better for them to hav etheir faith tested by unexpected experiences, and ou tof those experiences to have their vision enlarge dand their joy in the Lord increased . And surelythere is joy in the thought that God is dealing withus in a similar manner to which He has dealt wit hall of His people down through the centuries .

Moreover, now that we. can look hack over theyears of waiting and note how wonderfully the pro-phecies have been fulfilled, what courage it shoul dgive us! Think of it : hardly an old-world power ,either great or small hut what has gone through th ethroes of revolution—just as we expected would fol-low the World \\ gar . Practically all of the formerruling houses of Europe are now scat aside, anddictators are established in their places . Interna-tional law is no longer respected by the nations . re-sulting in a condition recently described by th eAmerican Secretary of State and others as "anarch yamong the nations ." And to protect themselvesamidst this anarchistic condition, every nation i sfeverishly preparing for vvar on a colossal scale un-precedented in the annals of history . Daily the news -papers are scanned 1n• countless millions of worrie d

souls the world over to see if the match has bee n

struck that yvill set the world on fire .Meanwhile, also, during these past years of partial

disoppointment, nominal Christianity has received adeath Mow, and as result has almost completely

lost its former potent influence among the nations .

And with this waning of religious restraint, the way

is opened up even wider for the forces of anarchy

to rush in and complete the work of "melting" theearth. Ah yes, surely we have every reason t o"look up, and "lift up " our heads, knowing fromthese many assurances, that our deliverance drawethnigh .

Shall we not then, more than ever, take couragein the blessed thought that God is still leading Hi speople ; that He has not permitted them to he de-ceived, but has merely been teaching them to wai tmore patiently upon Him . And now that we aresurrounded on every side by the unmistakable evi-dence that the King is here and His Kingdom atthe door, shall we not only take courage for our-selves but may our courage and renewed confidenceand zeal impel us the more energetically to blow thetrumpet of truth in Zion ; yea, not only in Zion ,but, to "tell the whole world these blessed tidings . "and "speak of the time of rest that nears" ; also, to"tell the oppressed of every nation, jubilee lasts athousand years . "
