Well, the county fair was in town last week, and depending on how you look at it, you couldn’t wait to get there, or you may

have just wanted to leave town for the week. I hope you went and had a great time! There were rides which are appropriate for small children as well as those “Scary” things that turn you upside down and sideways fifty feet off the ground. Exhibits included cows, sheep, chickens, ducks and other “rare” species not normally seen by city dwellers. There were tractors, automobiles, remote control airplanes, fire trucks and other items of interest on display throughout the grounds. And don’t forget those Teddy Bears and prizes which were so “easy” to win! If you’re young, you probably went and enjoyed the heck out of it. If you’re old,

perhaps you went, too, even if just to walk around and rekindle some old memories.

The Kiwanis club has sponsored the local fair for as long as I can remember – I believe it started in 1948. “In 1971”, says Allyn Bell, “We made $5,000 which we gave to local Coweta County charities”. In 1988, when I was Kiwanis president, we were able to give away about $32,000, then an unheard of amount for a civic club to give. Between forty and fifty thousand people may have visited the fair this year, spending at least twenty dollars each. “That’s a million dollars!” Although a lot of this money leaves town with the carnival, Kiwanis has made upwards of $150,000 a year, most of which is put right back into the good works of our community. It all started with the Newnan Kiwan-is Club, however, there are several Kiwanis Clubs now in our community to share in the work and the giving. It takes a lot of volunteer help to serve that many folks!

But the young people, who are the ones really enjoying the fair, are not really thinking of the logistics of operation, or the money it gives to the community. They’re there just to have a great time with their friends and family. As I write this article, I can still remember as a child the smell of the cotton candy, the sounds of the rides, the lights and music, and the “screams of joy” coming from excited people on exhilarating rides. It was a big deal in those times and I looked forward to it every year. Later, I was able to enjoy it with my own children, who now take their children. I suppose the fun could go on for generations.

Although there are always some downsides to any event with that many people, our fair is a safe, well run event which provides a great deal of joy, as well as funding many of the charitable organizations here – at least $1,000,000.00 just in the past ten years. “Wow!” So, if you haven’t tried it, do so next year. If you have, you may just continue this tradition for years to come.

Joe

Post Script: My favorite ride used to be the “Bumper cars”, and still is. I think my wife must have enjoyed it, too, as it apparently taught her the driving skills she uses today!

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Target Market ... What Does That Mean

In Real Estate? As business owners, we are constantly hearing about target mar-kets and how to direct our advertising towards attracting buy-ers for our goods or services. Information from survey results are compiled, reviewed and those results are then passed on to us. It’s about appealing to the buyer of our products.

Knowing who our “target market” while trying to sell a house is just as important to the home seller as it is to all these businesses that have products or services to sell.

As a home seller, this means that you are going to have to think about who your buyer will be when marketing your house. What age group are they? Are they empty nesters, new parents or fami-lies with teenagers? What will they expect to see when they come to view the property and will it be something that they desire?

Let’s say your house is 15 years old. The kitchen appliances, cabi-nets, countertops and lighting is dated compared to what a buyer will see in an newer house. Your bathroom is 15 years old. The flooring, vanity and fixtures are dated compared to the competi-tion.

Could your furniture be showing some wear and tear and look dated? Probably, but your thinking “A buyer is going to be pur-chasing our house, not our furniture. Why should that matter?”

It matters because, the “Target Market” for your property is probably around 30 to 40 years old, has a family that needs room to roam and if they see a house and the furniture looks like their parents or grandparents furniture, they can’t get excited about making this their new home. They need to see that their young, hip style of life will work in a 15 year old house. I call this the “Pot-tery Barn” generation. This is a style of decorating that a 30ish age buyer likes and can relate to and they can’t relate to a house that looks like their parents house.

Studies show 90% of buyers cannot visualize the potential of a space with the current home owners’ taste and belongings. It shouldn’t matter, but it does. However, if they visit a house that is 15 years old that has been updated through the years and has current style furnishings and accessories, they will get excited about it and most likely, this will be the house that they choose to purchase. This house was marketed with the “target market” (buyer) in mind.

NOW HERE’S A TIPBy JoAnn Derson

• There are many uses for empty Tic Tac con-tainers. Here are three: Wrap with pretty pa-per and use as a tiny vase for a single-stem flower. Or, use them to separate small scrap-booking supplies. Last, thread two needles with a length of thread -- one white and one black. Poke the needles through a small square of paper and wrap the thread around the pa-per. Slip into the con-tainer for a travel sew-ing kit.

• Need your nails to dry in a hurry? Use the cool setting on your hair dryer. It works really fast. -- L.E. in Georgia

• To get a couple more days out of your cat lit-ter, clean the box out and mix in a cup of bak-ing soda.

• Remove mildew from plastic shower curtains by spraying them with a mix of bleach and wa-ter, or just toss them in the washing machine with your next load of towels.

• We have a playroom, and the kids argue about who made what mess and who should clean up which toys. We made a cleaning sched-ule for the room, hav-ing one or two children per day responsible to clean up at the end of the day. It was a rough start, but the kids have

learned to clean up as they go rather than leave a big mess for someone else (pay-back is not kind). -- A Mom, via email

• If your vacuum has a paper filter, spray it

with your fave perfume or essential oil. It will blow into the air as you vacuum, leaving behind a pleasant scent.

Annual Doggie Dash Saturday, October 22

Peachtree City’s Shakerag Park

Dog owners and lovers, plus their furry, four-legged friends, are invited to participate in the Annual Doggie Dash, a major fund-raising event benefiting the Georgia Heartland Humane Society. This 3K (1.86 mile) walk meanders through the shady trails of Shakerag Park and will provide a one-of-a kind opportunity for you and your pet to enjoy early Halloween festivities to-gether.

Registration begins at 9:30am and the walk starts at 10:30am. The registra-tion fee is $10 per walker. Adults, children and their doggie companions are encouraged to show off their Halloween finery during the walk, and then join us for the Costume Contest at 12:00am. There will be a variety of retail and service vendors on hand, a live Disc Jockey playing your favorite tunes, “Pupcasio” – paw painting for dogs, fantastic door prizes and ghoulishly good snacks and treats for humans and dogs alike! The last Doggie Dash event will end at 2:30pm.

100% of all the money raised will go towards the medical treatment and care for the animals in our foster program care.

Each walker that raises or donates at least $35 will receive a specially-de-signed Doggie Dash T-shirt and doggie bandana, plus become eligible to par-ticipate in the drawing for door prizes.

All dogs attending this event must have a current rabies tag or proof of a ra-bies vaccine and be kept on a leash. All pet owners are responsible for their pet clean up.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Voir Dire comes from the French and means “to speak the truth”. This is better known as jury selection. The Norman Conquest of 1066 introduced into English common law some por-tions of the French vocabulary, including voir dire. Voir Dire examination is best defined as an opportunity for counsel to examine prospective jurors to see and hear their responses to ques-tions designed to discover a basis for challenges by the attorneys.

The purpose of voir dire is the ascertainment of impartiality of prospec-tive jurors and their capacity to treat the case on its merits. Attorneys for both plaintiffs and defense seek jurors with objectivity and freedom from bias or prior inclination. In Georgia courts both parties are provided the opportunity to determine the availability of the prospective juror to de-cide the case.

In order to proceed with trial, jurors are summoned to the courthouse. They are then brought into the individual courtroom in panels. Usually between twenty-four (24) and forty (40) jurors. From this panel the attor-neys proceed with their jury selection process. Both the plaintiff and de-fense attorneys have the opportunity to question perspective jurors about their background and potential biases before being chosen to sit on a jury. Each attorney can exercise a limited number of challenges for cause if that person says or otherwise expresses a bias against the attorney’s case. These challenges for cause are limited to a set amount for both criminal and civil trials. The judge would make the determination as to whether the juror was indeed biased.

In Georgia, attorneys have the right to ask questions seeking informa-tion about a juror’s knowledge touching any matter or thing which would disclose any interest of the juror in the case. This includes any opinion as to what party ought to prevail, relationships or acquaintances of the juror with the parties or attorneys; any fact or circumstance indicating any leaning or bias which the juror might have in respect to the subject matter of the case, the attorneys or the parties; and religious, social or fraternal connections of the juror.

Each attorney’s goal in selecting the juror is to get a fair and impartial jury who is willing to follow their oath and reach a verdict that speaks the truth.

My name is Theodoshia Whitten – my friends call me Theo. I was born and raised in

Fulton County but moved to Coweta County in the summer of 1989 with my husband,

and best friend of 30 years, Marty Whitten. We have four wonderful children and seven

grandchildren. I joined Coweta-Fayette EMC in 1993 as a meter reader and started get-

ting to know people here. In 1999 I was promoted to customer service representative.

Now they are not just people of our community, but many have become good friends

and good people whom I enjoy helping and working with every day. I have always been

a “people person” and I really love to talk. I believe this was my calling here at EMC. My

hobbies include swimming, fishing, and walking, and I love the beach. I am proud to be

a part of the growing community I call home, located here in Coweta County.

Publisher’s note: I have known, and worked with Theo for many years. She is al-

ways friendly and helpful, and makes me feel like I’m her most important customer.

But then again, she makes everyone feel that way!

Piedmont Newnan Hospital’s Surgical and Interventional Services team is showing its sup-

port of breast cancer awareness in a unique way by wearing pink gloves during the month of

October. Partnering with medical supply distributor, Medline, the team is focused on drawing

attention to the importance of early detection, encouraging all women to perform monthly

breast self-examinations and, for women 40 and older, to get a mammogram every one to two

years. The team hopes that when patients and hospital employees see their pink gloves, they

will be reminded to get their mammogram, a promise their team has made.

Piedmont Newnan Hospital Offers October Mammogram Specials

$75 screening mammograms throughout month of October

NEWNAN – September 12, 2011—The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center is offering screening mammograms for $75 throughout the month of October. Located at 1755 Highway 34 East, Suite 1200, in Newnan, Ga., appointments with no waiting are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Oc-tober 9, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

October is breast cancer awareness month. In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. Eighty percent of women who are diagnosed do not have any re-ported risk factors, other than being female and aging. Common risk factors may include family history, race and ethnicity.

The keys to surviving breast cancer are regu-lar screenings (breast self-exams and screening mammograms) and early diagnosis. Screening mammograms are covered by most health insur-ance plans and are recommended for women over age 40.

Ranked in the 99th percentile based on recent Press-Ganey surveys, the Piedmont Outpatient Center provides a comfortable, spa-like atmo-sphere for patients. Excellent care provided by staff members is coupled with amenities such as a private dressing suite, robes, refreshments and comfortable seating areas. The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center was recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in breast ultra-sound and ultrasound-guided biopsy, as the re-sult of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). It is also ACR accredited in mammography.

No physician referral is required, however it is re-quired that women being screened have a current physician to receive screening results. Patients should bring picture ID with them to the screen-ing.

To schedule a mammogram, call 770-254-3668 and mention this special offer upon scheduling. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted prior to the exam. This offer cannot be used in conjunc-tion with insurance coverage.

For more information on Piedmont Outpa-

tient Center, visit piedmontnewnan.org.

ChrysanthemumsThe chrysanthemum is a native of China, having been in cultiva-

tion there for over two thousand years. It was then exported to Ja-pan where it became a symbol of royalty. In the seventeenth century it was introduced into Europe. Other varieties were brought to England from Japan in the 1700’s. Then, in 1753, Swedish botanist Carl Lin-naeus created the name Chrysanthemum. A composite Greek word from chrysos (golden) and anthemon (flower) was given to a small yel-low species known as Chrysanthemum indicum. French growers were largely responsible for early development of the small multi-flowered bush type varieties. Many special and unusual varieties were developed in Japan. Holland, Korea and America each created many new types and colors. The chrysanthemum first began to be used and developed in the United States in the 1800’s. Today there are countless modern varieties available. These perennials return year after year.

Modern plants are from the species C h r y s a n t h e m u m morifolium. Varieties may be either bush-type, single bloom type, or some may be grown either way. In late Summer the plant turns its energy from plant growth to setting blooms. The

shorter day length of Autumn is the trigger for blooms to open. Bloom-ing times can occur from late Summer into November depending on the variety, location, temperatures, and amount of pinching.

Cultural requirements are a fairly neutral soil pH, well-drained soil, and full sun most of the day. Chrysanthemums don’t like constantly wet soil in Summer or Winter. Use good amended garden soil and don’t plant too deep. Fertilize Spring, Summer and Fall with 5-10-5 or 10-10-10 (not too much). Pinch out tips of branches late Spring through July to make bushier plants and delay blooming time (slightly). Water regularly as needed, but do not keep too wet.

DONNA’S DAY: CREATIVE

FAMILY FUN By Donna Erickson

Summer Still Lingers in

Backyard Garden

A purple petunia here, a rosemary sprig there and even arugula! My old college roomie, Becky, brought a won-derfully fragrant, wispy centerpiece to our house last week as an add-on to an impromptu Saturday-night family supper. Designed with lingering stems, herbs and blossoms from her backyard garden, it was arranged informally in a glass jar. So enchanting and simple. And perfect for a family activity you can enjoy this week.

Even if your backyard or potted deck plants look droopy and lost to the season, poke around and you’ll uncover some lovely finds lurking under leaves and between tired summer growth. Plus, it’s a great way to give your kids a chance to explore and notice what’s going on in nature. Think of your discoveries as the “potpourri” of your garden.

Becky’s picks were arranged in a charming, recycled 4-inch-tall and 6-inch-wide glass jar. Hearty dusty miller was placed at the base going out in all directions and became the support, like a flower frog. Along with your kids, look for plants with similar strong stems, and then build a centerpiece using what you have with an eye to plants that are fragrant and will last a while. The final gems that will have staying power, even when the water has evaporated from your vase, include lavender, hydrangea, eucalyptus, sedum, roses, pods and herbs.

Trim off the leaves from the base of the stems before you begin arrang-ing them in a jar or vase. As you put each one in the water, play “name that plant or flower,” and have your child repeat what you say. It’s especially fun when the name rolls off your tongues nicely, like colorful and lovely “ranun-culus.”

Place on a pretty cloth runner at the center of your dinner table. You might also toss a handful of acorns you’ve collected on fall walks here and there. If you are having friends over for supper, add a colorful flat leaf on each plate with a name written on top with a marker for a personal welcome to the table.

Everyone will appreciate the simple gathering to celebrate fall’s beauty, tasty food, and friends and family.

And it’s not just the good food that makes this place special, but the attitude of the own-

er. Her face seems to “gleam” with pride, and I think it’s because of the confidence she “gleam” with pride, and I think it’s because of the confidence she “gleam”has in her ability to serve great food. “I ap-preciate every customer and want to give them the best possible friendly service and fresh, delicious food.” Vicky makes you

want to come back again. She will also be

offering to package and deliver her baked

products with a nice note for those friends

and customers on your Christmas list. Spe-

cial homemade wedding and birthday cakes

can be made just the way you want them.

You can call her at 770-252-7800.

So, if you just want to stop in for a cup of

coffee and a muffin, have lunch, or take

home a box of great tasting baked goods, visit A Taste of Homemade. Vickie will be smil-

ing when you walk in the door - you’ll be smiling when you taste her food!

“I appreciate every customer

and want to give them the

best possible friendly service

and fresh, delicious food.”
