As much as I enjoy reading, I don’t normally buy or read study guides or preparation manuals. It’s too much like

school for me. Recently, however, I picked up a preparation guide for the United States citizenship test to see what was required for an “out of towner” to become a legal citizen. It included a description of how our government is organized, how laws are passed and enforced, and a list of the “rights and responsibilities” of legal citizenship. The book also gave an interesting history lesson of how and why the United States has become such a great nation and the men and women who helped us get where we are today. The precepts of this book really got me thinking.

So, in order to obtain naturalized citizenship, a person must, and should, know these things. And the book encourages these new citizens to become involved and informed, so as to be productive and upstanding members of their community and their country. But what about those of us who were fortunate enough to be born here? We were never asked to pass a test or make a formal commitment to our country in order to be a citizen. Although we are taught to obey laws, many of us have not been encouraged to become in-volved in the freedom and prosperity of our nation. We are too busy getting on with our lives. There are, however, many, many people who have given their talents, their time, even their very lives to keep this freedom and prosperity.

There are a lot of opinions blowing around lately about the status of “visi-tors” now living in our country, and whether they should be encouraged to obtain legal citizenship or leave. It is my opinion that any qualified man or wom-an who wants to be a legal, productive, tax paying citizen of the United States of America should be given that chance. Perhaps, then, the naturalized and nat-ural born citizens can join together in being a part of the solution and not the problem. All others need to visit their lo-cal travel agent.

By the way, what would happen if each of us was required to pass the citizenship test (without brushing up), or leave the country? I, for one, would take my suit-case with me to the test, just in case I had to head quickly and ignominiously for the border! But with the knowledge of how our government operates, and the issues that face us, perhaps we can, in some way, be a little more valuable to our community and our country. Theodore Roosevelt wrote: “The first requisite of a good citizen in this republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his own weight!”

JoeAs always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta

Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Can Psoriasis CauseMy Arthritis too?

Psoriasis is a common disease that produces thick, scaly patches of skin, often in areas like elbows and knees. What is much less well known is that psoriasis can have serious internal effects as well. One of the most common of these is psoriatic ar-thritis, a painful, progressive inflammation of the joints, often in areas like the hands, feet, wrists or ankles, although any joint can be affected. If not controlled, it can lead to permanent, crippling joint destruction.

If you have psoriatic arthritis, you may be eligible to participate in a study testing an investigational, injectable medication. All study visits and study medication are provided at no charge and participants may be eligible for reimbursement for time and travel.

Laundry Room Luv!It’s the last room that ever gets any attention, if any at all, and it’s one of the places that we spend the largest amount of time. The laundry room area is a functional space. It can be enclosed in a closet, lo-cated in the basement or carport, or if we are lucky, can be in a room designated just for laundry.

We spend a huge amount of time in these areas, loading and unloading the wash-er and dryer, then folding and ironing (if one has time). It’s not always a fun place to be, but it doesn’t have be the worst place either. It’s simply more pleasant to do laundry in a cheerful, organized space.

Whenever I meet with my home staging clients, I tell them to “make the laundry area a fun place to be”. We all know that it’s not that way in real life, but let’s sell the fantasy.

Spruce up your laundry room with a few easy chang-es:

• Painting the walls, the cabinets or storage shelves in cheerful colors can be one of the least expensive ways to spruce up this space.

• Use clear containers to decant laundry detergent or clothes pins. Place dryer sheets in a cute tissue box. Place stain sticks, spray starch, liquid detergents and softener in baskets to give an organized look with easy access.

• Find some fun artwork to make the area more inter-esting. This is a great place to display and enjoy your kids artwork … let’s face it you are in this area more than you realize.

• If you are fortunate enough to have a window, place a live plant in the room to add life and fresh air.

• For hanging space, use the same type hanger to give it a “this is such an easy room to organize” look.

For more information about how to make your laun-dry area a fun and cheerful place, contact....

“Pint-Size Gardening”Just as gardening is a pleasure for adults; so it is a joy for children. The excitement of planting tiny seeds

in the garden or in containers and then waiting impatiently for them to sprout is entertaining and enriching. The acts of planting and watering and tending a small plot of ground teach patience and provide enjoyable exercise.

Basic requirements for growing plants are full sunshine (south-facing best), good improved soil, good drainage, and frequent watering. The soil could be a mixture of our Georgia clay, plus compost, plus cow manure, plus a little sand, plus some lime, and a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. These should be thoroughly mixed. Vegetables and herbs must have excellent drainage - no wet feet! Either re-move the sod and do soil amendments or build raised beds and fill with amended soil.

Compost is a fun project to help recycle and go green. Kids enjoy putting grass clippings, shredded leaves, egg shells, coffee grinds, and fruit and vegetable scraps in an out of sight area to turn and moisten and wait for brown gold. This is also a fun form of outside exercise.

Flower and vegetable seeds are inexpensive and easy for children to grow. Zinnias, cosmos, and sunflowers are quick and easy to grow. An herb and vegetable plot could have dill, basil, parsley, chives, gar-lic, radishes, tiny tomatoes, and small varieties of carrots and lettuce, as well as marigolds to help repel insects. When growing in containers, remember good drainage ~ and deeper is better. Children feel great pride in their horticultural achievements. Planning before hand helps assure that they will be successful.

Some fun ideas for the garden projects are: planting in hanging baskets, or using a wagon wheel to plant in, or using a ladder to plant in, or a box. Plant in an old watering can, wheelbarrow, basket, a bucket, coffee can (painted), wagon, sink, in old boots or shoes, an old used clean grill base or old tires - any-thing. Remember good drainage! Labels can be made from clean milk cartons or plastic jugs cut out. Cookie cutters can be traced for shapes. Plastic spoons or forks or painted rocks can be used as labels.

It’s important for children to feel that this is their very own plot or container. Let them choose the theme, colors and layout or containers. Let them do the digging, planting, and watering, as well as the weeding. If

children are very young they will naturally need more help. Positive encourage-ment will reinforce their enthusiasm. The goals are to have a fun activity, to learn to grow things, and to have enjoyable outside exercise - not to have to be perfect.

A visit to the local library for books on gardening is another fun activity for summer vacation outings.

Being able to bring flowers they have grown into the home to decorate the table for family meals is joyful for kids. Planning meals for the family using vegetables and herbs they have grown themselves gives great satisfaction and pride to chil-dren.

P.S. Adults only should use fertilizers, sprays, and insecticides - if necessary.

Summer of Swing Concert at The Wadsworth ~ Friday, June 15

The City of Newnan Cultural Arts Commission has announced a summer concert to be held Friday, June 15 at the Wadsworth Auditorium. A Summer of Swing will feature Night Train, a 17-piece band who will perform an evening of big band, jazz, and swing hits from the 40s through today from artists such as Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Ted Heath, Harry James, and Billy May. According to bandleader Perry Peek, Night Train is “a big band that swings in the style of an era when bandleaders were the kings of swing.” In addition to the instrumentalists, Night Train includes two vocalists – Karin Wil-liams and Tony Winston – who will sing hits such as “I’m in the Mood for Love,” “Come Fly With Me,” “Mack the Knife,” “Georgia,” and “I’ve Got the World on a String.” A Summer of Swing will begin at 7:30pm, and tickets are $15 per person. Friday, June 15 is also MainStreet Newnan’s “Summer Wined-Up” wine tasting event, and a special combo ticket is available. For just $30 per person, you get a ticket for the wine tasting event and the Summer of Swing big band concert – a savings of $15 over the individual price of both regular tickets. Tickets are available at: Scott’s Books, Let Them Eat Toffee, Morgan’s Jewelers at Ashley Park, and Bank of Coweta – Thomas Crossroads branch. Ticket sales are cash or check only – no credit cards, please. For more information about the Summer of Swing concert, please contact concert chairperson Dave Dorrell at [email protected] or phone 770-301-2875. For information about MainStreet Newnan’s Summer Wined-Up event, please con-tact JoAnn Gentry at [email protected] or by phone at 770-253-8283.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

With July 4th fast approaching, this month’s article will touch on the Declaration of Indepen-dence.

On July 4, 1776 the United States officially declared independence from the British Em-pire. The Declaration of Independence was a statement adopted by the Continental Congress which announced that the original thirteen (13) colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states. July 4th is the day that has been chosen as our “independence” day.

Although Thomas Jefferson is often called the “author” of the Declara-tion of Independence, he wasn’t the only person who contributed impor-tant ideas. Jefferson was a member of a 5-person committee appointed by the Continental Congress to write the Declaration. The committee in-cluded Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. Of interesting note is the fact that Robert Livingston never signed the Declaration. He believed that it was too soon to declare inde-pendence and therefore refused to sign.

In all there were fifty-six (56) representatives from thirteen (13) colo-nies. Most of the signers were American born although eight (8) were foreign born. The age of the signers ranged from twenty-six (26) (Edward Rutledge) to seventy (70) Benjamin Franklin.

One of the most widely held misconceptions about the Declaration of Independence is that it was signed on July 4, 1776. In fact, independence was formally declared on July 2, 1776. On July 4, 1776, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration. It wasn’t signed until August 2, 1776.

July 4th was not declared a national holiday until 1870, almost one hundred (100) years after the Declaration was written. The Declaration of Independence is on public display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Memorable events on June 19

This year people around the world will celebrate Fa-ther’s Day on Sunday, June 19. In addition to marking a special day for dads, June 19 also marked many other events that took place around the world.

* 1862: The United States Congress abolishes slavery in all U.S. territories. However, it wasn’t until Presi-dent Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1963 that all four million slaves across the U.S. were freed.

* 1897: The first running of the Belmont Stakes takes place. The Belmont States is a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) horse race, open to three-year-old thoroughbreds that is held at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. It marks the final leg of the Triple Crown, a series of three prestigious horse races.

* 1934: The Federal Communications Commission is created. The FCC is charged with regulating all non-federal government use of the radio spectrum (includ-ing radio and television broadcasting) and all interstate telecommunications (wire, satellite and cable) as well as all international communications that originate or terminate in the United States.

Sunday, June 17th

Jimmy Piersal, on How to Diaper a BabySpread the diaper in the position of a baseball

diamond with you at bat. Then, fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher’s mound.

Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together.

Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again.

“If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the factthat whatever he does in any fathering situation

has a fifty percent chance of being right.”~ Bill Cosby

###

“When Charles first saw our child Mary, he said all the proper things for a new father.

He looked upon the poor little red thing and blurted, ‘She’s more beautiful than the Brooklyn Bridge.’”

~ Helen Hayes

###

“My father hated radio and he could not wait for television to be invented

so that he could hate that too.”~ Peter De Vries

###

“Life was a lot simpler when what we honored was father and mother

rather than all major credit cards.”~ Robert Orben

###

“If the relationship of father to son could really be reduced to biology, the whole earth

would blaze with the glory of fathers and sons.”~ James Baldwin

* 1967: Famed fighter Muhammad Ali is convicted for refusing entry into the U.S. Army.

* 1977: Bishop John Neumann becomes the first male saint from the United States. Though Neumann was born in Bohemia, which is now the Czech Republic, he eventually became an American citizen. The proposal for canonization began on December 20, 1976. A total of four proven miracles attributed to a saint must be completed before someone is declared a saint. Three miracles that were very profound were attributed to Neumann, so Pope Paul VI said there was no need to find a fourth miracle to declare Neumann a saint.

* 1987: “Ben & Jerry” unveils its newest ice cream fla-vor, “Cherry Garcia,” with the support of Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia.

* 2002: Hamid Karzai is sworn in as president of Af-ghanistan. Considered well educated, westernized and stylish, Karzai was often welcomed by foreign govern-ments and made many Western friends. TF116909
