Horse Stealing. On Friday night, the 20th of this month, a horse and mule were stolen from Mr. John CARPENTER of

this County. He followed the tracks of the animals about a mile north of this place and could trace them no farther. He

finally gave up all hope of recovering his property in this way, and on Monday had one hundred hand bills printed and at

1 o’clock P.M. same day mailed to different post offices on the 9 o’clock train next morning came a letter and a

gentleman to inform him that his horse and mule and one thief were in Fairburn.

Two men by the names of HILL and JENNINGS were charged with being the thieves. They were arrested near Red Oak

on A. and W. P. Railroad. HILL subsequently made his escape JENNINGS, however, is in the hands of the officers of the

law of Campbell county. We suppose he will be transmitted to this county for trial. Both men are citizens of Campbell.

Mr. CARPENTER went to Fairburn on the Tuesday evening train and there, after paying the fifty dollars, the amount

offered as a reward, once more obtained possession of his property.

Eulogy on the Dead of Coweta. The following correspondence will explain itself. The reason why Mr. SMITH selected

such a distant day, was that he wishes to confer with the Captains of companies – and for the next two months farmers

will be heavily employed on their farms; and on the 4th of July is observed as a holiday, it was thought that a larger crowd

could be congregated on that than any other day. The occasion will be one in which all our citizens would like to be

present. The place selected for the ceremony will be made public in due time. The officers who commanded companies

from the county are requested to furnish Mr. SMITH with all the information in their possession concerning the dead of

    their commands.

Newnan, Ga., April 16, ’66. (to) A.J. SMITH, Esq.

Sir – With pleasure we have watched, lately, the efforts of our citizens to collect by voluntary contributions; funds

sufficient to enclosed and beautify the graves of our soldiers buried in this city. This is as it should be – and we their

surviving comrades say God bless all who have contributed might to the holy cause that in behalf of the entire deceased

soldiery of this county, nothing has been done or said. ‘Tis true a few have been eulogized. Yet many who were as good,

as gallant, as self sacrificing have been given to the worms unsung, and even unwept saved by a few fond hearts which

broke as the grave devoured their treasures. A eulogy upon the entire dead of the County we wish pronounced, and we

know of none other so competent to the task and whom we believe would perform is more willing than yourself.

Therefore, we earnestly solicit you to comply with our wishes, and to name the day that will suit your convenience. We

are, sir, with high esteem, Your Most ob’t serv’ts, G.M. HANVEY, R.L.Y. LONG, W.A. TURNER, J.R.

MERIWETHER, J.W. HEADLEY, Geo. H. CARMICAL, J.P. BREWSTER, John W. TENCH, Committee.

    Newnan, Ga., April 20, 1866.

Gentlemen – Your favor of the 16th last, requesting me to deliver a Eulogy on the dead of Coweta, has been received.

Circumstances have prevented me earlier response.

It is neither unpatriotic nor unreasonable to avow our gratitude for the gallant men, who fought so nobly and died so

well in behalf of Southern Independence; it is a holy work to cherish their memories – Let monuments be reared to

perpetuate their names, and let the remembrance of their heroism and sufferings be forever embalmed in the hearts of their

    unfortunate, but grateful countrymen.

It is with melancholy pleasure that I accept the task you so kindly offer –would that I were worthier its performance.

You also request me to name a day upon which to deliver this Eulogy. I shall endeavor to obtain complete and reliable

information of the part the sons of Coweta, living and dead, bore in the great struggle for Southern nationality. This will

require time and research. The 4th of July next will suit my convenience.

For the flattering evidence of your appreciation and good will, and for the complimentary terms in which you addressed

me, accept, gentlemen, my sincere thanks and permit me to subscribe myself, Your obi’d and humble serv’t. Andrew J.

    SMITH.

  • GRANTVILLE GLEANINGS

Newnan Herald and Advertiser, August 6, 1906

Alonzo HOWE, a police officer at Winona Lake, a noted Indiana resort, is lying at the point of death with 4 bullet wounds in his body, while the young man who shot him, Austin MILLER, aged 20 years of Grantville, Georgia, is a fugitive. MILLER, it is reported, took exception to remarks concerning his mother and planned to whip HOWE. Lying in wait for the officer, he is alleged to have attempted to use a whip, when the determined resistance of the officer caused him to draw a revolver and fire 4 shots at HOWE, all of which found lodgement (sic) in his body.

The MILLER family but recently arrived at Winona from Florida, where they spent the winter, and the young man’s mother is almost prostrated by the affair.
