Kwaheri ya kuonana…

The date is set, the removers are booked and it is time to say goodbye. After 16 years in the village as your Parish Minister it is time for Sharon & myself to take our leave of you and step out on the next stage of our faith journey. Later this month we head for coastal Angus and the newly united charge of Montrose: South & Ferryden. It is a new phase in our ministry and there will be some new challenges ahead… it is certainly not a wee sleepy pre-retirement charge!

Our years here have been happy ones with both our boys growing up in the village and going through Fenwick Primary School and Loudoun Academy. The parting will no doubt be difficult. I have journeyed with too many people through their joys and sorrows for it not to be so. But we go with a sense of anticipation of what God has in store for us and our new charge.

Instead of goodbye we would like to lean back on our East African heritage and say “Kwaheri ya kuonana”. The phrase is Swahili and literally translates “Goodbye the appointment” but it is used in the sense “goodbye until we meet again.” We hope some of you will pop into Montrose if you are passing, the new address is Inchbrayock Manse, Usan, Montrose, DD10 9SD. There may also be occasion for us to come this way again.

One of the joys of moving is the clearing out of the accumulated clutter of 16 years of family life, teaching and ministry from this house. I am now on first name terms with the guys at the “tip” and the helpers in the charity shops rub their hands with glee as we wander in with yet another armful of donations! I am amazed at just how much unnecessary stuff we have accumulated over the years. It is stuffed in drawers, poked in the back of cupboards, and piled high in the garage! But moving is a good time to de-clutter and to unburden ourselves of things we no longer need (that is if we ever needed them in the first place!). It is coming up to 3 weeks to go to the packers move in and we still have stuff to get rid of!

That got me thinking though. If our homes are like that what about our lives! What do we clutter up our lives with that is unnecessary for us to carry around? What baggage are you carrying around? What is tucked away in the recesses of your mind? What weighs on your heart? What is it that burdens your soul? Guilt, broken relationships, anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, grief, hurt, are all examples of the unnecessary baggage that we all carry.

I have no doubt that much of it is real…

Covenanter Page 3

You have been through difficult times and you may still be going through them. These have left their mark on you… scars on your heart and in your soul. Some may be open wounds visible to those in the know while others are memories buried deep at the back of our minds. They are all, however, examples of baggage that weighs us down and yet we do not have to carry.

Jesus will lift each and every one of those burdens from you and he will set you free from that which binds you. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) and “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36).

Before you think that doesn’t apply to you let me tell you about Anne (name changed to protect her identity) who I knew in a previous parish. I first met Anne on an Alpha Course. About a year earlier her son had been attacked in the street and died as a result of it. She understandably carried a deep hurt and a burden of grief. She came away on the Alpha Weekend and nothing particularly remarkable happened… she didn’t receive counselling, she wasn’t prayed for, she just participated in the week end. Something inwardly happened though. As she was dropped off at her home late Sunday afternoon and walked up her garden path her husband had tears in his eyes. It was the first time he has seen Anne smile since her son had died. Over that weekend she had inwardly discovered the path to her personal freedom in Jesus Christ. The peace she found allowed her to smile again. If God can do that for Anne then God can do it for you whatever extra baggage you are carrying. Believe me it is good to de-clutter.

Blessings

Geoff Redmayne

The whist drives will begin in October, at the Bowling Club. The afternoon ones

are on the first Thursday of each winter month, beginning on 6th October at 2pm.

The evening ones take place on the second Saturday of each month at 7.30pm,

beginning on 8th October. These are not serious events and anyone who likes a

game of whist is very welcome to come along. You don’t need to be good at the

game to take part. A special treat on the Saturday evenings is a lovely supper

made by the ladies committee.

CHRISTIAN AID COLLECTION

This year’s collection raised the sum of £605.33, including Gift Aid.

Many thanks to David Finnie, who delivered all the envelopes, to everyone

who collected them and counted the money, but most of all to everyone

who gave so generously.

Changes at Kirk Session

I am reminded of the old story of waiting and waiting for a bus and

eventually 2 turn up!

At the May meeting of Kirk Session I indicated my intention to retire as

Clerk to the Session. I take this opportunity to thank all for the help,

support and encouragement I have received during those 11 years – it truly

was an honour and privilege and yes, very enjoyable, well most of the

time.

During the service on 18th September 2 new Session Clerks, Christine

Hainey and Kevin Wadsworth were installed and took the oath in front of

the congregation. They bring many diverse gifts and will make a great

team during this time of change.

I wish God’s Blessing on all their work for the Session

The Drop-in Café

The Drop-in Café has had another successful year – thanks to all the

hostesses who provided such delicious home baking week after week.

From the donations we received over the nine weeks, we were able to

donate £250 to Muscular Dystrophy UK, £150 to Alzheimers Scotland,

and about £100 to the Hall Development Fund.

Thanks to all of you who attended regularly – hope we will see you again

next year!

by “Friends of Crossroads” hub. With accompanist Alistair Peter.

Tickets will be available early November from the Fellowship Team.

Pat Parkin Thanks to all the people that made my birthday a day to remember.

I am still overwhelmed so thank you once again.

Who we are:

We started out as Fenwick Community Led Action Plan and earlier this year it became

evident that many actions in the Action Plan were tasks undertaken by the Community

Council. The actions in the Plan focused on the village, its services and its infrastructure,

but for us the underlying surveys taken in 2013 highlighted more than these.

There were a significant number of surveys saying that community spirit had to be built

upon. In order to build community spirit, we must first build on the fundamental needs of

the individuals – two of these being ‘health’ and ‘feeling safe’. Therefore, Fenwick Area

Community Empowerment was formed to enable these.

We live in a time of significant social isolation of all age groups and where people feel

unwelcome or excluded, and it would be extremely beneficial for the places we live, and

the resources our government has, to combat this by embracing community spirit, and a

desire for individuals, groups and businesses to work together.

As a village, we are seeing an increasing number of break-ins and thefts which the

village’s Facebook page is extremely good for learning about.

However, it would be much better to have a preventative measure and for this we have

secured a discount for SmartWater, with the full support of our local Police Chief and

officers, due to it being a DETERRENT.

LET’S MAKE FENWICK A SMARTWATER VILLAGE !

What is SmartWater?

SmartWater is a sophisticated security system that protects property, deters thieves and

helps the police to convict criminals. It can be directly applied to valuables or it can be

used to spray criminals committing a crime.

Their patented solutions each carry a unique forensic code registered to their owner -

• Anything marked with SmartWater can be traced – identifying the true owner and

linking the criminal to the crime

• SmartWater is non-hazardous and almost invisible to the naked eye but glows bright

yellow under UV light allowing the Police to detect it

• Supplied with signage - to warn thieves they risk prosecution if they steal from you

• Used by the police to catch and convict criminals and has aided hundreds of convictions,

maintaining a 100% conviction rate in court

• SmartWater solutions are guaranteed to last a minimum of 5 years if applied as

instructed – even when used outside!

TESTIMONIAL

“Police Scotland continues to work alongside our communities and relevant partners to

tackle housebreaking and protect people’s homes and belongings from acquisitive

criminals. This exciting opportunity with SmartWater Technology Ltd sends a very clear

message - we will not tolerate housebreaking or theft of property and remain willing to

utilise any and all tactics at our disposal to bring anyone involved to justice.”

Working with Neighbourhood Watch Scotland, Police Scotland and SmartWater we have

managed to secure a discount on home, business, car & bike products. This initiative to

create a SmartWater village would include signage and torches for the police to ensure

that it is as effective a deterrent as is possible.

The areas covered are Fenwick Parish area and from Stewarton and Kilmaurs to the

Darvel Valley, the reason for this is that it was requested by our local Police Officers.

ARTICLE FROM https://basc.org.uk/

HELP FIGHT RURAL CRIME

SmartWater is incredibly versatile and as a result can be used to mark almost anything,

including horse tack, quad bikes, shooting equipment, trailers, farm machinery,

lawnmowers and metal infrastructure making them uniquely identifiable. The traceable

liquid is simply painted on to items of value, assigning them with a forensic code that is

registered to the owner, so they can be traced if stolen and subsequently recovered by the

police.

SmartWater is well known to criminals, as it heightens their chances of arrest and

subsequent conviction. Police forces across the UK, together with SmartWater’s own

Investigators, regularly visit second hand outlets to search for marked property, thereby

making it increasingly difficult for thieves to sell on stolen goods.

President Martha Speirs welcomed a large turnout at the first meeting of

Fenwick’s SWI, 2016-17 session. Speaker Neil Smith gave a slide show and talk

on the British Exploring Expedition to the Himalayas in 2011. The venture gives

young people and students the opportunity to take part which can count towards a

university course. Neil works with South Ayrshire Council as an Outdoor

Education Officer and is a qualified Geologist so,he was able to explain details

on various aspects of the mountains and their formation over millions of

years. He spoke about the amount of preparation, organisation and training

required both before and during the expedition: a most interesting and

entertaining speaker.

He also judged the competitions. Winners were:

Points: A single bloom 1st - Nan Tivendale 2nd - Elizabeth Kelly 3rd - Elsie

Suggestions are being sought for an evening outing and these will be discussed at

the meeting on 13th October.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Maureen Rodger.

The meeting closed with a reminder that October's speaker will be Pamela

Kumari and the family. Kumari has now fully recovered from her surgery

and is back teaching the pre-school children.

He has also asked to assure everyone that Fenwick Parish Church and all

of the good work that we do is in their prayers also.

The Fete

Many apologies for missing the September edition of the Covenanter: the

final figures for the Fete show that we made an impressive £2357!

This was due to the hard work of Ken Geddes, the organising team, and the

many volunteers who helped manning stalls, counting money, donating

bric-a-brac, baking, serving in the tearoom and clearing up afterwards, not

forgetting everyone who came along on the evening.

However, we need more help with all these tasks, so be warned - we will

be looking for volunteers to make sure that the Fete is at least as successful

next year.

Fenwick Church Guild

The first meeting of the new session is on Tuesday 27th September. It is a

friendship evening with entertainment and supper everyone is welcome.

On Tuesday 25th October Trading Standards from Kilmarnock are going to

be with us and we welcome all our members and anyone who would like to

join us.

Subscriptions can be paid that night and also book the Christmas Dinner.

Moscow SWI held their Annual Coffee Evening on Monday 12th

September in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind and the Ayrshire Hospice.

An enjoyable evening was had by all, with a raffle, a bottle stall and home

Robert Blackwood was present with his guide dog Jasper and Nancy

brought along 11 week old trainee-puppy Luka, much to everyone’s

delight. Robert’s driver Pamela, puppy-walker Catherine and guide dog

user Barbara Urquhart were also present. Robert thanked Moscow SWI for

47 years of fund raising - and said he would be back next year for more

home baking!

Can You Believe It

A young man named John received a

parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad

attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird’s mouth was

rude, obnoxious and laced with

profanity. John tried and tried to change

the bird’s attitude by consistently saying

only polite words, playing soft music

and anything else he could think of to

‘clean up’the bird’s vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at

the parrot.

The parrot yelled back. John shook the

parrot and the parrot got angrier and

even ruder. John, in desperation, threw

up his hand, grabbed the bird and put

him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked

and kicked and screamed.

Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not

a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John

quickly opened the door to the freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto

John’s outstretched arms and said “I

believe I may have offended you with

my rude language and actions. I’m

sincerely remorseful for

my inappropriate transgressions and I

fully intend to do everything I can to

correct my rude and unforgivable

behavior.”

John was stunned at the change in the

bird’s attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what

had made such a dramatic change in his

behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly,

“May I ask what the turkey did?”

------------------------

And you thought there were no clean

jokes left!

Those were the days

I remember the cheese of my

childhood,

And the bread that we cut with a

knife,

When the children helped with the

housework,

And the men went to work not the

wife.

The cheese never needed a fridge,

And the bread was so crusty and

hot,

The children were seldom unhappy

And the wife was content with her

lot.

I remember the milk from the

bottle,

With the yummy cream on the top,

Our dinner came hot from the oven,

And not from the fridge; in the

shop.

The kids were a lot more contented,

They didn't need money for kicks,

Just a game with their mates in the

road,

And sometimes the Saturday flicks.

I remember the shop on the corner

Where a pen'orth of sweets was sold

Do you think I'm a bit too

nostalgic?

Or is it....I'm just getting old?

I remember the 'loo' was the lav,

And the bogy man came in the

night,

It wasn't the least bit funny

Going "out back" with no light.

The interesting items we perused,

From the newspapers cut into

squares,

And hung on a peg in the lav,

It took little to keep us amused.

The clothes were boiled in the

copper,

With plenty of rich foamy suds

But the ironing seemed never

ending

As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.

I remember the slap on my

backside,

And the taste of soap if I swore

Anorexia and diets weren't heard of

And we hadn't much choice what

we wore.

Do you think that bruised our ego?

Or our initiative was destroyed?

We ate what was put on the table

And I think life was better enjoyed.

But a huge fact not hereto

mentioned

in this mushy tale of nostalgic

rejoice is the reason we all

“enjoyed” our lot because there

was NO CHOICE….:-)
