In September 1990, when APO-ACNA had its first meeting in Burlingame,California, Brod Bado was there, and he eveninducted into office the ad hoc officers of theforming umbrella organization. Somehow, itwas at that sports festival in NorthernCalifornia when Brod Bado performed his finalofficial role, as, soon after, he was taken ill.During the Christmas Ball weekend insouthern California in 1990, Brod Bado wasin the hospital. And, on January 22, 1991,Brod Bado died.

Still, Brod Bado was there whenhundreds of us from all over the United Statescame to Long Beach, paid our respects toBrod Bado, and saw his mortal remainsinterred. I remember Brother Earle Herbert,APO-USA past national president, giving aeulogy. I remember Brod Gil Magno givingan award to Brod Bobbitte Picazo for hissacrifices on behalf of Brod Bado. I remember

Brod Art Rivera giving a humor-tinged eulogy.I remember Brod Edmon and Marina Zamoragiving the Ureta family certificates of massesto be said for Brod Bado.

Yes, all that time, from the first dayof APO in the Philippines and California untilhis last days, Brod Bado was there. But whatshould NOT go without notice is many of uswere there, too. We were there, because BrodBado was there. We were there, because BrodBado, without asking, wanted us to be there.Because he was always with brods and sis.Because he always wanted to be with brodsand sis. And because we wanted to be withBrod Bado, we were there. Always.

Brods and Sis: Everything happensfor a reason. There’s a reason why Brod Badolived and died in Long Beach. There’s areason why Brod Bado was in our midst hislast few years alive (1977-1991). And thesimple reason was he felt at home in Long

Beach. He was home in Long Beach. And itwas because Long Beach was where hisblood family lived and in and around whichbrods and sis lived. And, because his bloodand APO family was there, we were there,Bado was home, he was home with us, andhe was there with us. Now, for always andforever.

Brods and Sis of APO-AA-GLA andbrods and sis of all alumni associations inNorth America and within driving or flyingdistance of Long Beach: Once more, let us bethere for Brod Bado. We know where hismortal remains are. In Long Beach.

So, let us be in Long Beach thisweekend of March 18-20, 2005. My wifeGracie and I are already at the Best WesternGolden Sails Hotel, Room 108, Tel. No. 562594-0623.

Please come to Brod Bado’sbirthday bash on Friday, his centennialbanquet on Saturday, and the farewell potluckbrunch at the Ureta home on Sunday. So longas you’ve contacted Brod Art, Sis Emma, orany member of the Brod Bado Uretacentennial committee and any officer ordirector of The Dr. Ureta Foundation, you’reconfirmed and need not worry about the $10after-the-deadline charge on top of thestandard banquet donation of $50. Just come. We’d love to have you celebrate Brod Bado’scentennial weekend with us.

And, a final thought. For the manyof us who were already in the U.S. in 1980,it’s been 25 years since. It seems we’ve spenthalf of our lives in this adopted country ofours. Home is where our heart and hearthare, and I am sure you consider as home yourneck of the California woods.

After 14 years (1977-1991), I am sureBrod Bado had considered Long Beach hishome. As his final resting place, it was in thiscity that he came home. Therefore, for allintents and purposes, he never left home. Henever left us. Brod Bado had always beenhome. With us.

Brod Bado’s centennial weekend isa homecoming of sorts. Come on down. Let’scome home. Where everyone is or should bethis weekend. In Long Beach. Para kay Bado.

True to Alpha Phi Omega, may wealways be,

Brod Mel S Gonzales Jr,President

As you know, APO Midwest-Chicago Alumni Associationheld its election of officers for the 2005-2006 term last July 2004.The new officers are now holding office. We will officially inductthem into their respective positions during our Induction of Officerson April 2, 2005, to be held at the Penthouse of Ramada Inn, O’Hare. You are all welcome to attend this event. We guarantee you a“great time” in the Windy City.

APO Midwest-Chicago Alumni Association’s newadministration under the leadership of Bro. Manolo L. Comprado,Alpha’67, will implement new programs, but will ensure that thesuccessful programs of the previous administrations continue inperpetuity or until the membership decides otherwise.

We will continue our volunteer work in various communityactivities like “Hustle Up the Hancock sponsored by the AmericanLung Association,” “Shamrock Shuffle,” and LaSalle Bank’s the“Chicago Marathon.” We will also maintain the assistance weprovide to both the Chicago Food Depository and the NorthernIllinois Food Bank in DuPage County where we help clean, sort, and pack various food items for later distribution. Thesedepositories are “Food Banks” that distribute donated foods tovarious food kitchens and shelters for the poor and homeless.

As they say, charity begins at home. In order to provideassistance to our members who are in distress, we established anEmergency Fund. Monetary assistance is minimal, but every littlebit helps, right? We supplement any donation given by theassociation with voluntary individual donations from members whowish to provide additional assistance. We also extend these

APO MIDWEST-CHICAGO ALUMNIASSOCIATION’S ACNA REPORT1st ACNA MEETINGMarch 18-20, 2005 - Long Beach, CA

voluntary donations to other APO members in need even if they arenot members of APO Midwest-Chicago.

We also have expanded our Educational Fund. Thisprogram used to just provide monetary assistance to the APOLearning Center in Cainta, Rizal. We now also have a Scholarshipprogram, the goal of which is to provide scholarship grants toorphans of APO members and other deserving children of APO.The revenues from our annual “Pasayaw” event are used to fundthis Educational Fund. We also on occasion sponsor a Raffle inorder to raise funds for this program.

As is the case with other Alumni Associations, there aremany APO members in the Chicgoland area who are not members ofAPO Midwest-Chicago. For some personal reason or another theydo not want to become members and participate in our programs oractivities. We are now developing a “reach-out” program, the objectof which is to try and invite or entice these brothers and sisters tojoin the association and become active members of APO once again. Our plans include home visits, especially to those who are ill.

Our “reach-out” program also extends to neighboringalumni associations, most especially the newly formed Windsor-Michigan Alumni Association. We will try to support their programsand perhaps enjoy joint activities with them.

In order continue to foster camaraderie among the membersand to keep the members’ families involved, we will continue holdingour annual picnics and camping events. We will also continue tocelebrate our Fraternity/Sorority’s anniversary including Christmaswith our families and friends in December of each year. We are alsoplanning to go on family excursions in neighboring states, likeMissouri, to see the sites or enjoy the shows in towns like Branson.

Whenever any of you are in town, anywhere in theChicagoland area, let us know and we will give you a taste of APOMidwest-Chicago hospitality!

Brod Tony:Though your intent may be sound, the manner by which you

address the issues that concern you is rather disturbing. If you havequestions to raise with Brod Cesar, have you found a way to direct these to him? Why use this medium? Are you seeking for “ka-kampi?”This may haunt you in the end, because this is the process by which the‘connivance’ process starts, no?

Come on Brod Tony. Show some balls and raise your concernsdirectly to the person whom you have trouble understanding instead. With all the years of training you had in the US of Navy, you didn’t learna thing about people skills? How many years did you have again?

Am directing this you in this medium at the risk of ridicule, butI’m merely pointing out to you that you have a lot of brilliant ideas thatmay or may not be adopted by the ACNA or APO leadership. But justlike Brod Chato said in his earlier e-mail, once the Leadership is elected, the process doesn’t end there. The bigger challenge lies ahead - that is, areyou just going to continue to bitch, moan, and whine while you are notactively participating in advancing worthwhile ideals? Or are you going tobe a part of the solution?

Sorry that this may sound like I’m attacking you. I am NOT! Ijust wish to remind you that you proclaimed yourself a professional, and Ibelieve you’ve earned to be called one. You don’t get promoted to SeniorChief in the US of Navy for nothing. This was not given to you, you’vedearned this!

That’s all and with due respect,

Vic DeLeon, #10370Epsilon Psi, 82A - 2X4KROAPODCAA

Brod JP is right. All too often the lack of support cna beattributed to a lack of communication. It would be cumbersome for everymember to call up Brod President Cesar or Brod NP Rod to ask what’sgoing on. The president may end up spending an inordinate amount of timejust answering calls. It is incumbent for the leadership to communicate withhis constituents. The first thing I told my staff when we took over the NOwas, “Kalimutan muna ninyo na nanalo na tayo sa eleksyon.

In the old days, the programs and projects of the nationlleadership is trickled down to the locals by the RDDs in their own regionalmeetings and by the GCs, GLCs and AA presidents in their own meetings.

ANOTHER SUGGESTION: Let’s have calendar of events fromthe international to the national to the regions all the way down to thechapters and AAs. Marami naman sa mga events ang pwedeng ilagay naagad at sa gayon ay mareremind ang mga miyembro kung ano angmagganap. Pweden isama na ang mga anniversaries, mga monthly, quarterly, semestral, annual and biennial meetings.

chato****************************

With due respect to everyone, I think the issue of Brod Tony isthat there appears to be precious little information for him to know whatthe programs are, hence he wants to emphasize that there is acommunication problem. It is therefore not a solution for individuals to callthe leader in order for the former to know the programs of the latterbecause the failure of communication remains. It is therefore incumbentupon the leaders to communicate as widely as possible with hisconstituents, and not for the individual to initiate the communication.Kung wala palang magtatanong, e di hindi malalaman kung ano angprograma?

MGA KURO-KURO SA APONETBrod Chato,

Try and help him and support the ideals he spoused? idon’t know what they are now and not even sure there were duringthe process by which he was running for president.

were there ideals? if there were then and there are now, then let me hear them now even in the softest voice he could muster.he has not posted anything here on the net during the time he wasrunning and even now that he is the president, as if he has the typeof an imperial presidency that it doesn’t matter that we don’t knowor know about him and the purpose of his presidency. its hard tosupport someone where we don’t know where he or she stands?should i be then present during the convention to understand whywould he be the right fit for acna? i was absent during theconvention, but never i heared anything from hi! m nor he dared topost something here on the net that would made me convince that hewas the right choice.

a stealth leader and certainly a disengaged one in a processby which he could be understood by and through many means, is aleader who in unwilling to tap many resources and therefore missinga lot of opportunities (these goes to every leader).

how would we know that he has really “something goodcooking” if he won’t use all the avenues available to him. not allbrods and sis could attend the acna meetings and be abreast of hisideals and programs of governance. not all alumni presidents whoattend the acna meetings keep their alumni group abreast and postedabout acna. so how could we expect everyone in acna be in “theloop” of his ideals and program of governance?

in retrospect, are we sure he won on ideals or onconnivance of self serving interest -not for the greater good of thefraternity but to perhaps to punish brod jp for having stood onissues that somehow others were offended and does not believe in?

brod jp has a polarizing record because of his transparencynow and then, that somehow others could not just forget and forgiveand thus see him as a much better choice. but they forgot tounderstand, that we are much better off with a leader we knewwhere he stands than those we don’t. i hate to be in the process oftrying to unravel who he is and what he stands for?

what does brod cezar stands for, i may ask? if we know, perhaps i am just “sour graping” and blunderously shaming him. if iam, then i am deeply sorry and regretfull. and if i am not, thenconsided this as my service to the frat and a wake up call for him todo better because by appearances, he is not “squeaky good.” but ido understand that appearances is deceiving and by the end of histenure he may have been the best acna ! president we ever had, which i hope he will be.

i thought brod jp was the right fit because there were idealsand programs of governance he enunciated here on the net and thetransparency that he has always projected. i guess to many, presidency is never won on ideals but on many conniving variables.

if brod cezar is reading this , i suggest that he takes this asa constructed criticism that somehow the shortcomings that ithought he has could be rectified as this early in his administration. ijust can’t sit idly and not do this first salvo on my characterizationon what it meant to me to be a dynamic and engage president.seldom is a stealth leader is dynamic and engage. and i don’t see himas engage on all fronts and using all the resources available to him.

nevertheless brod chato, i concur with all you said and thewisdom you just shared and always share.
