On December 29, 1953, South Florida Baptist Hospital opened its doors for the first time. It was a milestone in Plant City’s growth and development. The hospital was small by today’s standards; just four stories and 100 beds.

But it was leaps and bounds beyond what had existed before — a 10-bed clinic over Herring’s Drug Store, now the Whistle Stop Café at the corner of South Collins and South Drane Street, and another 13-bed clinic over White’s Central Pharmacy, now A Peace of Plant City, a retail shop at the corner of Reynolds and Collins Street.

Fast forward 65 years and SFBH has transformed from its humble beginnings into a state-of-the-art health care facility, offering the same level of patient care found in much bigger cities around the country. But throughout the decades, the hospital has managed to maintain the small town friendliness and personal attention that make patients and families feel appreciated and welcome.

Dub McGinnes is a well-known Plant City civic leader and philanthropist. He’s also

chairman of the SFBH Board of Trustees and proud of the journey the hospital has taken on its road to success. “My father was among the Plant City leaders who were instrumental in creating South Florida Baptist Hospital,” said McGinnes. “When I drive into the hospital parking lot, I sometimes stop and think about my father smiling down on us. He would definitely approve of how far we’ve come over the years.”

The Early Years

During a 65th anniversary open house for invited guests on Sunday, January 6, McGinnes reminisced about the hospital’s accomplishments, the challenges along the way and the decisions that changed the hospital’s

history. He noted that the first efforts to build a hospital in Plant City took place in the early 1940s with a donation of land by Rowena Mays and M.E. Moody, but not until G. A. Leichliter, a Plant City minister, and his secretary, Uldine Greene, took charge did the campaign move forward. Finally, there was enough momentum that civic clubs, businesses and churches began stepping up to help with fundraising efforts. “First Baptist Church of Plant City had the hospital in its budget for years and made monthly payments to the hospital,” said McGinnes. By 1953, the hospital was built and ready to admit its first patients. The years following ushered in a long period of stability and growth as the hospital became the centerpiece of the community.

But by the 1990s, health care was changing and times were tough. SFBH’s future was in jeopardy. “We began to lose patients to larger hospitals,” said McGinnes. “We simply could not compete. Because of our relatively small size we had little leverage in negotiating managed care contracts. The viability of our hospital was on our prayer lists.”

Around that time, several local hospitals offered to buy South Florida Baptist Hospital, but the

board was concerned that would mean the demise of the hospital—an unacceptable decision after all of the hard work the community had put into building it, McGinnes said.

BayCare On The HorizonThen in 1996, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa reached out to ask if SFBH might consider joining them in a new venture; a collaboration with the largest not-for-profit hospitals in Tampa Bay. The new venture turned out to be BayCare Health System, now a model for the country, but at the time, it was a novel concept.

“The idea was that each hospital would keep its own identity but would pledge to work together jointly in a community health care alliance,” said McGinnes. “Economically it made sense, but we were concerned about whether we would lose our identity and culture that so many people had worked so hard to achieve.”

After much discussion, the South Florida Baptist Hospital Board of Trustees voted to pursue the opportunity, giving the hospital access to much needed financial capital and the purchasing power found in economies of scale. But the initial transition period was not always smooth. “In the early stages of the organization, during a presentation to all of the hospitals, South Florida Baptist Hospital had not been included in any of the projections or discussion,” McGinnes recalled. “Sister Gladys of St. Joseph’s jumped to our rescue and made it clear how important we were to the new BayCare organization. There was a murmur of approval from the other hospitals in attendance. That was a turning point. It was a defining moment in the life of South Florida Baptist Hospital. We knew we were going to have an equal place at the table.”

With the support of BayCare Health System, South Florida Baptist Hospital began

moving forward to modernize its facilities, acquiring new high-tech medical equipment and expanding services with programs like the Pete Beaty Surgical Center, the Jim and Ruby Jean Redman Emergency Center, the Steve and Krista Howard Heart and Vascular Center, and our new Grimes Critical Care Center. The hospital recruited new physician specialists to join the medical staff and bring the latest advanced procedures to the community. The SFBH Foundation, which was established in 1995, under Jimmy Redman and Judy Martin, also began to flourish, raising funds for capital projects and reaching out to the community with popular events like Diamonds & Denim, and Lights of Love.

“I did not envision just how successful everything would turn out to be,” said McGinnes. “Over the years, millions of dollars have been spent on facility and equipment upgrades. SFBH is now the

largest employer in the city. Meanwhile, BayCare has set the standard as a successful joint operating agreement between hospitals.”

But one abiding principle has remained the same from the beginning—South Florida Baptist

Hospital remains ingrained in the community. “We’ve been able to keep the small-town culture that’s so important to all of us, while delivering health care second to none. It’s a wonderful story,” said McGinnes.

The Next 65 YearsWhat can the community expect as South Florida Baptist Hospital plans for the future? Looking ahead, McGinnes believes the biggest challenge facing SFBH will be the skyrocketing growth expected to occur in East Hillsborough County along the I-4 corridor from Tampa to Orlando.

“Plant City is at the epicenter of this growth,” said McGinnes. “We are becoming a major distribution hub and the city limits are expanding east and south. As the population grows, the hospital will need to plan for greater demand for health care services. But these are happy problems to have. It’s an exciting time ahead.”

Karen Kerr, SFBH president, acknowledges the tremendous contribution that hospital team members, physicians, volunteers, board members and donors have made in guiding the hospital’s progress and success over the past 65 years. “We are fortunate to have such a committed group of people who support our goals and provide exceptional service to our patients and our community. South Florida Baptist Hospital has a unique culture of which we’re very proud.”

Bruce and Margaret Rodwell, who serve on many boards and committees of the hospital, enjoy the festivities.

Carolyn and Jack McMullen join Diane and Mike Sparkman in celebrating the hospital’s service to Plant City.

Don’t Miss It – The 25th Annual Children’s Classic Golf Tournament!

22nd Annual Diamonds & Denim — What Fun We Had!

The Children’s Classic Golf Tourney is celebrating its 25th year raising money for the children of Plant City. River Hills Country Club in Valrico will once again host us for this exciting event. The Joe Lee Signature Private Golf Course is considered one of the top golf courses in Tampa Bay, renowned for

its outstanding course layout. This beautiful 18-hole course will offer our golfers a luxury location to enjoy. Friday, April 12, a 12:30pm shotgun start marks the beginning of the event which will again support the South Florida Baptist Hospital Community Health Program. SFBH cosponsors the event with The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and the Plant City Kiwanis Club. This charity golf tournament benefits children and youth initiatives and programs through these organizations within the Plant City community.

New this year: Registration for the tournament can now be made through SFBHFoundation.org. All levels of sponsorships are available. The process to sign up your team and register your golfers is simple. For questions or additional information, please call (813) 757-8478. See you on the links!

Diamonds & Denim, SFBH Foundation’s annual gala held in September 2018, was another

huge success. Not only did the large crowd of 650 have a great time seeing their friends and neighbors, and enjoying the fantastic food from 911 Catering, they had an opportunity to be part of a new fund-raising activity, Unlock Your Dreams, to win a $1200 Carnival Cruise Line gift card. The participants hoped to buy a winning key that would unlock a cage holding the cruise gift cards. It was exciting right down to the last four people to try their key. Congratulations to Jeanne Redman Knotts for unlocking her dreams! Many thanks to Beaches Painting and Contracting, Inc.,

for their donation of the gift cards. A grand total of $112,000 was raised to benefit South Florida Baptist Hospital services and programs.

Many thanks go to our Presenting Sponsor, Advance Care Hospitalists. They’re

our physicians who take care of our hospitalized patients every day and provide such a necessary, high-quality service. In addition, our Diamond Sponsors included BayCare Health System, Terry and Peggy Crum, TEAMHealth Emergency Medicine and Thompson Hartford Foundation.

Lights of Love – Jingle Bells Rocked!

Lights of Love 2018 was a great success once again and raised $34,900 to support community

services and programs. The weather cooperated to help make the lighting ceremony one to remember. The evening started off at Dark Horse Music Store with photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Then First Baptist Church’s Praise Team, Amplify, and Kids Worship Choirs performed four uplifting seasonal songs. That led to the big countdown to light the 35 foot Christmas tree located in the heart of Plant City’s McCall Park. With one flip of the switch by Santa, the entire downtown area was adorned in Christmas lights.

Thank you to all who supported the evening by purchasing a light in honor or memory of a loved

one. Thank you to Mike and the team at Dark Horse Music Store for being so accommodating and welcoming. A big thank you to our major sponsors, Publix

Super Market Charities, Terry and Peggy Crum and the Thompson Hartford Foundation. Also thank you to our in-kind sponsors, the City of Plant City General Services department and the First Baptist Church of Plant City. With their assistance, we had a great show for all of our guests. And, thank you to our emcee, Mayor Rick Lott. He’s always so generous with his time and enthusiasm for Lights of Love!

Jason and Casey Jones’ family attend Lights of Love.

Rudolph and a little cutie pie watch the program during the evening.

Santa and Mrs. Claus take a break from their busy schedules to take pictures with children and families.

ew Ann Hammer Trinkle Nursing Scholarship Announced

18

A generous donation from long-time Plant City residents Robert and Ann Trinkle will go a long

way toward helping South Florida Baptist Hospital team members achieve their educational goals. The Trinkle family’s $100,000 gift to the SFBH Foundation establishes the Ann Hammer Trinkle Nursing Scholarship in support of team members currently pursuing a baccalaureate or master’s degree in nursing. One team member will be selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship each year for the next 20 years.

In recognition of the Trinkles’ gift, SFBH also announced the renaming of the education program for nursing

and allied health care professionals to the Ann Hammer Trinkle Clinical Education Department.

“We’re very grateful for the Trinkles’ gift,” said Jana Butler, executive director of the SFBH Foundation. “Pursuing an advanced degree can be very expensive and scholarships support the idea of better work-life balance. Many of our team members have families and may need to reduce their work hours in order to accommodate their school schedule. Scholarships can help with living expenses to allow the team member to be successful.”

Linda Baldridge, SFBH director of Clinical Education, agrees. “The Trinkle Scholarship represents a major investment

in the success of our team members. As our team members gain additional knowledge and skills, then our community benefits as well.”

The Trinkles are well known in the Plant City community and have been long-standing supporters

of South Florida Baptist Hospital. They both have played a major role in guiding the hospital’s growth over the years and helping establish its reputation as a leading health care organization. Robert was a member of the South Florida Baptist Hospital board of directors for many years, and Ann served on the SFBH Foundation board from 1996 to 2013. She was very active on numerous committees, including the popular Diamonds & Denim.

Surprise LuncheonThe decision to fund a scholarship in Ann’s name was a 50th anniversary gift from her husband Robert—and a complete surprise to Ann. She learned about it at a special luncheon hosted by the Foundation and hospital administration on Sunday, December 30.

“It was such an honor to work with Robert to establish the scholarship in Ann’s name and plan the luncheon,” said Jana. “We invited their entire family—15 people in total. It was definitely a special moment to see the surprise on Ann’s face when I announced the scholarship.”

Ann jokes that was much more than a surprise—it was a shock, but a wonderful recognition and

tribute. ”I thought we were just going for lunch with the SFBH Foundation since I had been on the board for a long time,” said Ann. “I had no idea that the family had been invited. It was a thrill for them to share this event with us.” The Trinkle’s have four daughters, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Over the years, the Trinkles have supported many SFBH capital campaigns to expand the

hospital’s facility and services, but this is the first philanthropic gift focused on education. “Education has always been an important interest for Robert,” said Ann. In addition to South Florida Baptist Hospital, Robert has endowed educational scholarships at a number of Hillsborough County organizations, including Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

“The continued success of South Florida Baptist Hospital is very important to us,” said Ann. “Robert’s father John was instrumental in supporting the hospital back when it was first getting started, and we have continued that tradition. We believe that a good hospital is central to every town, and we are proud to have played a part in making sure that SFBH continues to be a valuable resource for Plant City.”

both Plant City and South Florida Baptist Hospital since moving here last summer. A board-certified family medicine specialist, Dr. Woody has joined Dr. Paul Gimness in his practice at Family Medical Specialists of Florida.

“Everyone has offered me such a warm welcome,” says Dr. Woody. “The friendliness of the people and the small town feel of Plant City make me feel completely at home. Within a short period of time I’ve become completely invested in the community.” In fact, Dr. Woody says that she had only been in Plant City a short time when a physician at South Florida Baptist Hospital approached her and said, “You’re so lucky to be starting off here; it took me 25 or 30 years to find a hospital this great to work with.”

“We’re happy to have Dr. Woody join our medical staff at South Florida Baptist Hospital,” said Jodi Stevens, manager of Medical Staff Services. “Plant City is growing and it’s great to have a new family practice physician join our community to meet the demand for primary care.”

Dr. Woody grew up in Orlando in a family of doctors. Her grandfather was an obstetrician-gynecologist,

her father is an anesthesiologist, and both of her sisters are physicians. Her older sister is an anesthesiologist like their dad,

and her younger sister is in her first year of a residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida. As if that’s not enough, her mother had an earlier career as a respiratory therapist and an uncle is a radiation oncologist.

Dr. Woody started taking college classes in high school and excelled in science. But not until her third year of college classes did she decide to pursue a career in medicine. She went on to earn her medical degree and a master’s degree in clinical science at Saba University School of Medicine in Saba, a tiny island in the Caribbean Netherlands. “It was a unique situation,” says Dr. Woody. “The landmass of the island is only five square miles and the population is only about 1,500 people. Groceries came in by boat once a week. There wasn’t a lot to do there other than study, hike and scuba dive.”

Because the medical school wasn’t connected with a hospital, medical students had to leave the island to

participate in clinical rotations as part of their training. “I was fortunate to be sent to small towns and hospitals around the country, which gave me an appreciation for the kind of lifestyle a smaller community offers, rather than a big city,” says Dr. Woody. She came back to Florida after graduating from medical school and completed a residency in community and family medicine at the University of Florida.

As a primary care physician, Dr. Woody sees a wide variety of patients, from newborn through

seniors. She has a special interest in women’s issues, geriatrics, chronic conditions, pain management and pediatrics. Dr. Woody also offers a range of outpatient procedures at the office, including skin biopsies, pulmonary function, stress tests, bone density scans, ultrasound and echocardiograms. In addition, the practice specializes in vaccinations for patients traveling to areas around the world where there is possibility of exposure to life-threatening disease not usually found in the U.S.

When she’s not seeing patients, Dr. Woody likes to spend time outside. Growing up on the chain of lakes in Orlando, she developed a passion for water skiing and wakeboarding. She jokes that by the time she was 7, she was already driving her parent’s boat. She still participates in water sports, and has more recently added rollerblading to the list of outdoor activities that she enjoys.

The Team Member Giving Campaign, TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE, has been part of the Foundation’s annual fundraising for more than 20 years. During that

time, team members have raised more than $1,000,000! That’s right – you read that correctly! And in 2018, the campaign

set a new record with a 15 percent increase from 2017, raising $95,059.68! This enormous amount was made possible by 86 percent participation among all staff. “Our team member's level of participation is unmatched in BayCare and their generosity is driven by their dedication to the hospital,” says Karen Kerr, president of South Florida Baptist Hospital. “Gift incentives were provided at certain giving levels that enhanced donations this year,” says Jana Butler, executive director of the Foundation. “Many team members increased their gift size to achieve levels of giving that were important to them. I truly thank all of the team for their involvement and their thoughtful contributions.”
