Inside this Issue:

Seeking Vibrancy

Vibrancy is a word that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I’ve been thinking about it

for my own life, but also for our church. What does vibrancy look like? Well, it involves

energy. I think it involves posive energy described with words like joy, excitement,

expectaon, and warmth. I think vibrancy is an important marker within life and com-

munity, and I think we need to strive for and seek a#er vibrancy within our individual

lives as followers of Jesus, but also within our church life, as a collecve group of be-

lievers who seek to worship, learn, and serve together here in Luray.

I was moved as I read an arcle before Christmas about a plan to close 10 United

Methodist churches in and around Harrisburg, PA. You can view the arcle by clicking

this link if you’re reading this online: h0ps://www.pennlive.com/news/2018/12/

10-united-methodist-churches.html

The arcle talks about how at one point these churches were vibrant, acve, and en-

gaged with their community. However, over me they have become overwhelmed

with declining parcipaon, soaring costs for maintenance and upkeep of aging build-

ings, and they are just unable to go on as they once had. In some ways it is very sad,

but in other ways I am deeply thankful for their courage, honesty, and faithfulness. If

you view the arcle you can see pictures of some beauful places of worship, and you

can imagine how acve the churches had been. But there is something important here

that you might easily miss….the conference, and the churches are deciding to do this.

They are planning to have their last worship service on Easter of 2019, and then to

form a new church – Impact Church, where their mission will be to connect and en-

gage the people of Harrisburg. They are planning a resurrecon of sorts. The people

connected with these churches will certainly be affected by this change in profound

ways, but most of them can see that in order to reach people, this kind of change is

needed.

As we enter into a new year, I wonder what kind of changes are needed in us, and in

our church family. What kind of courageous choices will we be challenged to make in

this year? How will we embrace the opportunity to go deeper with Jesus, and go wider

to reach more people for Jesus in our neighborhood? Let’s seek vibrancy in this New

Year, allowing the light of Jesus to pierce thru us and thru all that we do in His name.

I’ll see you Sunday!

Grace & Peace,

Erich

All Things New

Has someone you loved drifted away from you?

What a perfect time to make “all things new”

Instead of blaming others for situations that unfold

It’s time for us to check ourselves to determine if we’re carrying our load

Our Bible assures us plainly of the path we should pursue

When Christ stretched out His hands for us to make all things new

So my friends have courage and cast away that heart of stone

Forgive yourself plus the other person and discover you have grown

Christ died on a cruel cross for me and also for you

The very reason he gave his life was to make “All Things New”

Walton L. Gordon

Thank you all so much for the Gi4 Cards to our College Students.

We have heard many thank you’s and there are also Thank You

notes that are posted in the Elevator Lobby!

Your generosity is beyond appreciated!

Online Giving Has Arrived!

Luray UMC has contracted with Vanco Payment Systems to pro-

vide the ability for members and guests to make contribuons

to our mission and work through online giving. To provide this

ability, Vanco charges us $10 per month and 45 cents per trans-

acon. In addion, there is a transacons fee charged for each

donaon—described in more detail below.

To get started, you will need to create an online account with

Vanco. There are two ways to do this.

On Your Smartphone The first is to use your smartphone. Use an Apple iPhone or

Android device to navigate to the appropriate app “store”—

Apple’s iTunes or Google Play. Once there, search for “Give

Plus Church.” The app you want looks like this:

A#er you download the app, you will create a user-ID, your

email address is used, and a password. Then you will idenfy

how you want to make your donaons.

There are two ways to give through electronic giving. One is by

allowing Vanco to create an electronic transacon to take mon-

ey from any checking or savings account from any bank. To use

this method, you will navigate to “Account Profile”, “Payment

Methods” by touching the “menu” icon on the top le# of the

screen—it looks like three parallel lines. You then touch the “+”

in the upper right corner of the screen and then select “Add

New Checking/Savings Account” and fill in the appropriate infor-

maon. You will need the roung number of your bank and

your account number and make sure you indicate whether it is a

checking or savings account. Then, press save. You can add as

many different accounts as you like and choose among them.

The other way to give is with a credit or debit card. You follow

the same steps as above except that you will select “Add New

Credit/Debit Card” and fill in the appropriate informaon, in-

cluding the card number, expiraon date and ccv number from

the back. You can add as many cards as you like too!

Once you have set up the method of payment, when you next

enter the app, you will presented with the “Donaon” screen.

At present the main donaon categories are “General Fund”,

“Debt Rerement Fund” and “Communion Rail Offering.” For

the Christmas season there also are categories for “Christmas

PoinsePas” and “Staff Gi#.” For each you enter the

amount to donate and the means of payment—one of the

accounts you have set up.

Lastly is the issue of the transacon fee. For each online

bank account transacon, Vanco charges a fee of 1%. For

each credit/debit card transacon, Vanco charges a fee of

2.75%. You are given the opportunity to increase your

gi# by the amount of the charged fee. For example, sup-

pose you give $100 to the General Fund, purchase a poin-

sePa for $10 and give $15 for staff gi#s on your credit

card. You are charged $125. If you do not choose to in-

crease your gi#, you will have a donaon recorded as

$125. The church will get $121.56 and Vanco will subtract

$3.44 in processing fees. If you decide to increase your

gi#, you will be charged 2.75% more and your total

charge will be $128.44. In the first case the Financial Sec-

retary will record your donaon as $125. In the second

case your donaon will be recorded as $128.44. In other

words, you are given credit for the gross amount of your

donaon—what you give plus the transacon fee wheth-

er you decide to cover the fee or not.

From the Church Web Site The second method is to use the link from the Church’s

web site, www.lurayumc.org On the web site you will see

a “bu0on” that says “eGiving”. The bu0on is blue and is

found in the banner secon of each web page below the

Flame and Cross. Once you press the bu0on you will be

connected to our giving page at Vanco Payment Systems.

Presently, our page looks like this. You will either create a

new account or log on with the same credenals you cre-

ated for the smartphone app. You have one account with

the same userid and password. You then either set up

the payment methods like you did on the smartphone

app or simply press connue. At this point you will have

the opon of choosing the payment method and choosing

whether or not to offset the processing fees.

One difference between the web page shown above and

the app is the treatment of the Christmas PoinsePas. On

JANUARY LURAY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PAGE 5

the web page, you select the num-

ber of poinsePas you wish to pur-

chase and the price is set at $10

for you. If you purchase poinseP-

as on the app, you must compute

the total amount you will pay ($10

each mes the number you want).

Other than that, the funcon of

the two methods is idencal—at

least it seems to be so far.

Faith – Hope – Love In Action

We have a special year before us, the United Methodist Women are celebrating 150 years turning faith, hope and love in action on behalf of women, children and youth.

During the months of January and February we are joining with Girl Scout Troop 40274 (Leader: Heather Sours; Berkley Bennett and Lauren Sours are two of the members) to create a “Welcome Home” basket for a CHOICES client and her family as they leave the shelter. There will be a clipboard going around. Take a moment and sign up to contribute an item.

Ladies, you are also encouraged to sign a Pledge to Missions card this month or in February and return to Alice Gray, our Unit Treasurer.

UMW Officers for 2019-2020: President-Elly Hakel; Vice President-Cathy Whittle; Secretary-Faith Carlson and Treasurer-Alice Gray.

Pledge to Missions

We come together to celebrate and appreciate the heritage of United Methodist Women. We follow in the footsteps of women who transformed the world be-cause of their commitment to women, children and youth. When they saw a need, an injustice or an opportunity to speak out on behalf of those who had been silenced, they took action. We also, look to the future and the role each of us plays in making a Pledge to Missions for 2019 ; as we put faith, hope and love into action for the years ahead. We follow a long line of women from local units like ours and their passion for mission.

Alice Gray and Elly Hakel will have available Pledge Cards/envelopes. You can choose to make a one-time pledge for the year or give monthly to the UMW. Thank you for your commitment to serve women, children and youth in our country and around the world.
