On To College….Ali Berry College: Bluffton College

--How would you describe your experience at the Dearborn Soccer Club and the Dearborn Jags? Playing with the DSC and The Dearborn Jags was a wonderful experience playing with kids I’ve never met before at the start of a season and them being family at the end was something you can’t find many other places I’d do it all over again if I had the chance.

--What will you miss most about your time at DSC? I’m going to miss the out of state tournaments the most, going to a hotel with all the guys playing our games and going back and just bonding for a whole weekend it wasn’t just the soccer but the time in between games the going out to eat the time at the pool and the meeting up in one kids room and staying up after coach said lights out.

--Any advice for DSC players that aspire to play in college one day? My advice would have to be never give up, I faced a lot of criticism and hardships from all over I wasn’t the perfect soccer player but I always played with heart my motto passed on from my dad to give 100%, 100% of the time if you can play with heart passion and overall effort you’ll succeed.

FUTURE STAR

Ben Ross

Time at DSC: 4 years Current Team: Dearborn Jags U9 Boys Green Current Coach: Trevor KingPosition: D/M/FTalent: "Footskills/Footwork and creating space"

Favorite Player: Ronaldinho Gaucho

Favorite Food: Rigatoni and Meatballs

Director: Mo Hijazi “I remember when Ben first started coming to our Jr Jags winter sessions inside of Canfield, and just enjoying him in every 1v1 activity we put players through. He had a knack for creativity and would pull a rabbit out of hat to get out of tight spaces. It is that very creativity and his continued effort to improve in all areas of his game, that stands out. Ben also has shown a coachability trait that is also enjoyable to see. He's attentative, humble and a tremendous teammate, He's a pleasure to be around."

“Make Failure Your Fuel”: How to Help Your Athletes Learn from Adversity

BY: JOHN O'SULLIVAN / WEDNESDAY, 30 MAY 2018 / PUBLISHED IN ADVERSITY, MESSAGES FOR KIDS, SPORTS PARENTING

In May 2018, retired US Women’s National Soccer team star Abby Wambach gave the commencement address to 600 women from Barnard College in New York City. Wambach, the all-time leading scorer for Team USA, an Olympic and World Cup champion, and an inspirational athlete known for playing with passion and giving her all every time she stepped on the field, gave

an incredible talk to the graduates, sharing stories from her career, and lessons she learned.

1) Help your athletes focus on the process:2) Ask your athletes the right questions when theystruggle:What went well? What needs work? What can you learn from today that will help youpractice better this week and perform better in thefuture?3) Don’t blame the uncontrollables; instead focus ontheir response to events:4) Help them find things they are passionate about: Oneof the critical ingredients needed for athletes toovercome adversity is ownership of the experience.5) Show them how to embrace the hand they were dealt, and play it well: We all have faced adversity, and whenour children struggle, it is a great time to share our ownstruggles, and what we learned from them.

As Wambach stated to the attendees:“Here’s something the best athletes understand, but seems like a harder concept for non-athletes to grasp. Non-athletes don’t know what to do with the gift of failure. So they hide it, pretend it never happened, reject it outright, and they end up wasting it. Listen: Failure is not something to be ashamed of, it’s something to be powered by. Failure is the highest octane fuel your life can run on. You gotta learn to make failure your fuel.It is a rocky road to the top.Collins and MacNamara have also found that well-timed character and psychologically based interventions from coaches and supportive adults help these athletes develop coping skills, grit, and resilience. In other words, it is not our job to smooth the pathway of our athletes, to give them plush fields, carry their gear for them, and remove all obstacles from their supposed path to greatness. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It is our job to help them learn from struggle, and see that the path to the top is not supposed to be easy. If we really want to help our athletes, students, musicians, and entrepreneurs achieve something great, we need them to understand the path is filled with potholes. And we need to be sure not to pave them, but to ensure each one of those potholes is an opportunity to learn. For many children in sport, May and June mean tryout season. This is inevitably a season of disappointment for many children, some who do not make the team they want, and others who do not make a team at all. It is a time where they face uncertainties such as new teammates, a new coach, perhaps a new club and whole new friend group. Many families move towns, and young athletes are thrust into trying situations, with no friends or familiar faces to look upon.

Director of Coaching for Dearborn Soccer Club and the Dearborn Jaguars, Mo Hijazi, recently successfully passed and attained the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) A-Youth License. The USSF A licensing process has a more time and travel demand than in years past, and the new process been granted to only 200 coaches across the United States.

“It was an intense year of learning and easily the most impactful journey on my coaching career to this point. Not only in terms of the overall workload required of candidates, but the critical thinking and introspective reflection that happens throughout the course,” said Hijazi. Making several week long trips down to Kansas City, Missouri to the US Soccer Training Center, Mo was part of a group of 40 candidates from the US and abroad. Among the highlights of the 10 month coursework, was a week spent on site with the Womans U17 youth national team in their preparations for the world cup, and a site visit of the highly successful Sporting KC MLS Academy, where the candidates observed lectures on methodologies and were able to view teams train out on the fields.

“I have been very fortunate to have travelled across the country and into Canada, and seen first hand what successful soccer cultures look like. I visited Toronto FC right after they had won the MLS Cup. The most apparent detail in each of those high performing clubs, is the embracing and uniqueness of their individual Club Culture. Embracing our uniqueness and culture here in Dearborn and surrounding communities similarly, is what I feel will fuel our soccer movement. We have a great opportunity to instill an unparalleled passion in our kids for this sport, and as coaches we have a duty to push ourselves to evolve through means such as coaching education courses, to further develop our craft.”

Mo didn’t stop at USSF courses, also obtaining the United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma-w/Distinction, the US Youth Soccer National Youth License, and has completed the LaLiga Level 3 and 2 courses, highlighted with Legendary Real Madrid Striker Raul, consulting on coursework. “Meeting Raul and hearing him speak not only about his pathway as a player, but his views on coaching were very inciteful and fascinating. He is the third leading scorer in Champions League history only behind Messi and Ronaldo, yet was so humble. At the end of the day, the message he preached above all, was as much as we believe this game is about X and O’s and tactics, it really comes down to building positive relationships with our players. And for me that is what it is about, whether you’re coaching U4 players at DSC or Professional players playing in World Cups.”

You would think with many important credentials now completed, Mo would be ready to slow down the education train. “No, not at all, we are only scratching the surface of what we are capable of accomplishing here in our Club. I have been afforded some incredible educational opportunities in the near future and I look forward to pushing the envelope. We will be innovators in continuing to create a soccer environment that will ultimately be centred around our mission and aim. (To develop the country’s best people, players and club). You can expect some more exciting news in the future, our players need us."
