It is only on a firm foundation that a great building can tower into the air; and it is only because it has a

deep root that a great tree can reach out to the sky with its branches. The Christian life is both a life with a

firm foundation and at the same time a life which continues to grow outward and upward.

Jesus is…. our life and our very reason for living. He meets our needs - even those we do not even know we have. If you want to live a satisfying life then you need Jesus.

August 5: Jesus Is the Bread of Life, Part 1

John 6:24-35 ~ To satisfy your hunger for heaven you cannot eat the bread of earth. To satisfy your hunger for heaven you must eat the bread of heaven. What is this bread? It is Christ Jesus our Lord. He is the bread of life - now and forever more.

August 12: Jesus Is Lord

John 6:35, 41-51 ~ Jesus is Lord! Folks, this is more than just a matter of faith. God gave us a brain… think it through with Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience and you will come to the faithful decision that Jesus is Lord!

August 19: Jesus Is the Bread of Life, Part 2

John 6:51-58 ~ The bread of Christ is universal and yet personal; it is personal yet communal; it is time-sensitive yet eternal; it is to be kept yet given away. But most importantly we are to be “God-filled!” by eating and drinking all Christ has to offer to us.

August 26: Jesus Is Worth Fighting For

Ephesians 6:10-20 ~ The battle Paul described can only be won by the entire community of faith. Working together, we are less likely to give up. We need to remind one another to have on our protective gear - especially the shield of faith. And by praying together, we are assured our prayers will be heard. May God bless us all as we continue to fight the good fight.

Join us for our new sermon series starting August 5.

others that you are a miracle of God’s as we become victorious in all things. Draw on His grace now, not later. The primary word is now. Let circumstances take you where they will, but keep drawing on the grace of God in whatever condition you may find yourself.

God’s grace is unmerited favor to be saved from circumstances that are out of your control. The grace to be saved from that which the evil one is trying to destroy. The grace to have favor to do that which others say is impossible for the Kingdom of God! As God’s fellow workers, Paul urges the Corinthians and us not to receive the grace of God in vain, basically reminding us not to present our lives that have been purchased with God’s grace for no purpose. For Paul the present danger we face is that of procrastination. Paul quotes Isaiah 49:8 and then applies that passage to the age of grace that we live in! Today is “the day of salvation” when God’s favor is shown to men and women. How unthinkable that such grace should be received in vain. God’s grace is available for us so that we might have favor at Christ United Methodist Church and in all of her ministries, in our lives, in our witness, in our transformation, and in our worship.

We . . . plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain —2 Corinthians 6:1

The grace you had yesterday will not be sufficient for today. It is time-sensitive, like a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk. You must take it or accept it daily as in the prayer Jesus taught us to pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.” Grace is the overf lowing favor of God to save you. Not just from sin, but to save you from life’s obstacles that try to trip us all up from doing the will of God. We have a tendency to forget in the midst of trouble that we can always draw upon God’s grace. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 6:4, “ . . . in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses.”

Are we failing to rely on the grace of God in our situation? It is not a question of praying and asking God to help us— it is taking the grace of God now. We have a propensity to make prayer the preparation for our service, yet it is never that in the Bible. Prayer is the practice of drawing on the grace of God in the here and the now. There is a sense of urgency in the Christian life to be praying constantly… Pray now — draw on the grace of God in your moment of need to save you from this and every situation. Prayer is the most normal and useful thing; it is not simply a ref lex action of your devotion to God. Draw on God’s grace through prayer.

“ . . . in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors . . .” (2 Corinthians 6:5) — in all these things, display in your life a drawing on the grace of God, which will show evidence to yourself and to

portions of Scripture” in lesson format. Wesley felt it was important for children to be taught the Bible and to be able to discuss theological matters. He provided this education primarily for the children whose impoverished parents could not send them to school. In addition to the spiritual disciplines, Wesley hired two school-masters to teach reading, writing, and accounting, the same subjects his mother had included in her teaching.

It’s been said that Methodism built a school long before it ever built a church. In the same year Wesley acquired The Foundry (1739), he built the Kingswood School at Bristol. George Whitefield laid the cornerstone. Wesley hired four school-masters and one house-mistress to educate sixty children, the same number taught at The Foundry. Nine years later he opened a second New School for the sons of Methodist preachers. From that point on, Wesley began to focus on providing the formal education he wanted his preachers to have.

Richard P. Heitzenrater, author of Wesley and the People Called Methodists, has written: “Wesley was never able to discard completely his academic gown. He continued to nurture a love of learning and at the same time to focus on the need for holiness. This dual emphasis is perhaps best remembered in the words that Charles Wesley had recently published in his hymn for children (“At the Opening of a School in Kingswood”): ‘Unite the pair so long disjoined, Knowledge and vital piety.’”

Thus for Methodists, education remains critically important, but that education is to always include the fostering of spiritual disciplines and the teaching of the Bible along with the essentials of the Christian faith. These are as important, if not more important. Being Methodist means that as we prepare to return to the academy, we also re-commit to our participation in small groups, like Sunday School and HomeGroups, because we want to unite our general knowledge with our knowledge of Christ and of His church. We want to acquire the skills necessary for vital piety and a faithful witness. May God richly bless you as you enter into another time of learning and deepening your faith. Commit to GROW in Christ.

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation – if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:2-3, NRSV

Susanna Wesley, John Wesley’s mother, home-schooled her children until they were ready for preparatory school (college). She began when each child turned five, teaching them the alphabet in just one day, then quickly moving on to reading, writing, and other basics. She was extraordinarily patient and incredibly diligent, able to organize each day so that it included six full hours of education and several more of assigned household chores. There was no such thing as leisure time for the Wesley children, though they were allowed an hour or two in the late afternoons to choose an enriching activity for themselves. In addition, each child was given a block of time with Susanna in which to discuss their problems. Susanna was ultimately more concerned for their spiritual education and well-being than she was for their general level of knowledge.

John Wesley’s education was the best available at the time. At the end of his home-schooling, he was sent to Charterhouse, an exclusive prep school that made it possible for him to attend Oxford University. He studied theology, history, and science at Christ Church College, Oxford, from 1720 to 1724, and was awarded a teaching fellowship at Lincoln College, Oxford, two years later. After two more years, he and his brother, Charles, became involved in the student-led small groups at Oxford that had been formed for the purposes of worship, study, and practicing the spiritual disciplines of prayer, Bible study, fasting, and service or social work. This seemed natural to both Wesleys, given Susanna’s emphasis on their spiritual growth.

As the Methodist movement began to spread, John established the first meetinghouse in an old factory in London that had once been used to cast cannons and where the great bell in St. Paul’s Cathedral had been cast many years before. This was the second meetinghouse established in the world and was aptly named The Foundry. No doubt, heavily influenced by his own upbringing and training in the spiritual disciplines, Wesley immediately began to organize children together into what he called little societies for their spiritual education. He had just published his third installment of Lessons for Children, in which he presented “the plainest and most useful

around a common theme of “Space,” not as in “outer space” but rather in the space God gives us in the created world, the space between us as people, the space of the church, and the space around Christ’s Table. Each day of the week will focus on a different “space,” inviting us to a deeper level of hospitality, to confront the needs and concerns of our world, to gather for Communion, and to ref lect on the spaces we erect between ourselves and God and others.

From Scotland, we’ll journey to England, to re-trace some of John Wesley’s footsteps and get in touch with the early beginnings of Methodism in London, Epworth, Bristol, and elsewhere. We hope to visit the better-known “sites” and be nurtured by our roots, both in Methodism and in our own family heritages. We’ll be looking for a Methodist congregation with whom to learn and share as we worship together.

Most of all, we’ll be praying for experiences that ground us in the reality of the nearness of God’s Kingdom and root us in God’s restoring mercies. We’ll also be praying the same for you, especially as we all answer the call to live the gospel in today’s world.

Iona Abbey is a restored medieval Benedictine Monastery on the island of Iona just off the northwestern coast of Scotland. The “Community” there is part of an ecumenical Christian movement founded in 1938 by George MacLeod, who was at the time a parish minister. An experience in this special place, and place of special community, is meant to enable short-term residents to “respond to the continuing missionary task of communicating and living the gospel in today’s world.”

About 50 guests from all over the world are housed there each week, while thousands of pilgrims stop by the Abbey Church every day throughout the summer. My spouse, Bob, and I are privileged to have arranged to be two of those 50 guests who will be able to live there for a while in August. He will live in the simple space set aside for men; I will live in that for women. Accommodations won’t be fancy – bunk beds, shared baths, no “lifts.” We’ve been informed rooms are built to “medieval proportions,” so no en-suites or closets. It will be a simple lifestyle, to be sure, complete with “chores” assigned each day.

We’ll be able to see each other at meal times, during class times, and at worship. In fact, worship is the focus of our time there. Worship at Iona is based

An old saying suggests that “you are what you eat.” Probably pretty accurate, given that my favorite food is shrimp and I stand a towering 4’10” tall! The adage, “You are what you eat!” didn’t gain popularity until the 1920s, when nutritionist Victor Lindlahr, who was a strong believer in the notion that food controls health, developed the Catabolic Diet. Lindlahr believed that most of the diseases from which men suffer were caused by what he termed “cheap foodstuffs,” so he produced a list of those foods he believed would lead to a vastly improved quality of life, when eaten regularly.

In Chapter 4 of Matthew, we are told that “… people need more than bread for their life; they must feed on every word of God.” Spiritually speaking, a diet rich in God’s Word is life-sustaining and soul-satisfying. Conversely, a diet consisting mainly of “cheap foodstuff” can cause our health to suffer. So it seems that the axiom, “You are what you eat!” finds an application not only in the physical, but also in the spiritual, realm. Those who regularly feast on the Word of God enjoy an improved quality of life, because God’s Word:

• Gives us knowledge and freedom - To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31 and 32

• Offers us the opportunity to prosper and succeed - Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8

• Builds up our faith and promises us a great inheritance - Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32

• Provides us hope - For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4

• Prepares us to be a place where Father, Son and Spirit can dwell - Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” John 14:23

• Instructs and equips us for God’s work in the world - All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16 and 17

• Sustains life - The Spirit gives life; the f lesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life. John 6:63

Author Eugene Peterson put it this way in one of his most recent works entitled, Eat This Book: “Christians feed on Scripture. Holy Scripture nurtures the holy community as food nurtures the human body. Christians don’t simply learn or study or use Scripture; we assimilate it, take it into our lives in such a way that it gets metabolized into acts of love, cups of cold water, missions into all the world, healing and evangelism and justice in Jesus’ name, hands raised in adoration of the Father, feet washed in company with the Son.”

Remembering that you are, in fact, what you eat: are you feeding on a lot of “cheap foodstuff” these days? If so, perhaps it’s time to institute some changes to your nutritional regimen, to experience a diet more abundantly full of God’s Word. Taste… savor… digest it. Allow it to strengthen and fortify you. And because a meal is much more enjoyable when consumed in the company of another, share it. Then rest in the satisfaction that overcomes your soul as you do.

YOU AREWHAT YOU EAT

Children’s ministry has a great leadership team and we have been so intentional about preparing lessons and leaders that speak the truth of God’s Word into the lives of children, to give children a firm foundation in Jesus Christ. Each year builds on the previous year so that when a child transitions from Children’s to Youth Ministries we have been faithful to God to plant seeds of Faith.

This spring I was wrestling with a decision to go on the Youth Mission trip to Jamaica. The trip was full except they needed two more female adult leaders. I was thinking and praying about it, and I asked Tripp to send me the list of the youth who were going. When I received the list, I quickly realized that I knew every youth on the list as the majority of them had been active in Children’s Ministry in some form. God just spoke to me and said, “These are your kids.” I immediately went into Tripp’s office and said, “I am going.”

There were soooo many blessings that came out of the trip, but one that was significant to me as the Children’s Director was seeing these youth in action, seeing the fruit of our labors. Knowing that many of the seeds that were planted in these young people’s lives, God has grown into amazing hearts for Him. Witnessing them as amazing lights for Christ, seeing them serve so sacrificially, seeing them share their testimonies in front of thousands of people, hearing them pray, hearing their profound insights into God’s Word as each one shared a devotional, watching them declare that Jesus is the Champion of their lives and He wants to be the champion of all of our lives.

This amazing experience just confirmed in my heart even more how we need to pour into each child the

love and grace of Christ; we need to immerse each child in God’s truth while they are young because it does make a huge difference.

If you have ever served in Children’s or Youth Ministries, I want to assure you that you have made an impact. You are a part of something so much bigger than you even imagine.

Parents, we ask you to make Sunday School a priority and commitment for your kids. You are called to be the spiritual leaders. Lead them in a way that leads to life eternal. Lead them in a life of faith.

There is nothing else you can give your child that has eternal value.

The toys, the bikes, the baseball lessons, they will all fade away.

They need to know that they are created by an amazing God who loves them beyond what they can imagine, that He values them and wants a personal relationship with them. He sent His one and only Son so that if they believe in Him they will never perish. They have the promise of eternal hope, eternal love with Jesus because of what He did on the cross for them. I believe that God created each one of us, with a void in our hearts that can only be filled with a relationship with Him. We try to fill the void with all sorts of other things, but it doesn’t work. I have seen the difference between kids who walk in faith and those who don’t, and my heart breaks when I see the later because it doesn’t have to be that way.

The world is battling for your children; we are here to point them to Jesus Christ because He has won the battle. If they are on His side, He will be their strength. He is their savior.

Q: Why do you recommend the Serendipity Bible?

A: Serendipity is what happens when two or three get together and share their lives and the Holy Spirit does something beautiful when you least expect it. The Serendipity Bible has Bible study courses built in for every group. There

are 60 Felt-Need Group Courses, 16 Topical Study Courses, and 200 Bible Story Courses. It is the perfect curriculum for anyone who wants to study God’s Word in a group or in discipleship.

Q: What makes the Serendipity Bible special?

A: This Bible has three wonderful sets of leading questions for every passage in the Bible that they call “Open-Dig-Reflect.” These are questions to start the Bible study, in-depth questions to help you share with one another, and closing questions of application for Christian living. This Bible is an outstanding resource for groups, individuals and personal Bible study.

Q: Who should get this Bible?

A: Everyone who wants to study God’s Word. If you have a heart to lead a Bible study, the Serendipity Bible is a great tool to use. If you have no experience in leading Bible study, the Serendipity Bible is packed with experienced people who created innovative Bible studies to help you lead.

Q: Do I need this Bible if I already have a study Bible?

A: Yes, because of the guiding questions on each passage of the Bible which help you ref lect theologically on the text. The Bible studies and guiding questions can really make an impact in your individual or group study. It is great to use the

Serendipity Bible for group study and to continue with your study Bible for a deeper dig into the text. The two Bibles should be a perfect pair for in-depth Bible study, group leading, and discipling others.

Q: How would this Bible be helpful to me in the church-wide study, The Master Plan of Evangelism?

A: This is the tool I use in my personal life to disciple other people. The questions and Bible studies allow the Holy Spirit to guide you through one-on-one or group sessions. Any novice can be a pro with these built-in Bible studies and guiding questions. With the ready-made studies in the Serendipity Bible, the only thing an individual needs to disciple someone is time, a ready heart and the desire to share the good news with other people.

Q: What version of the Bible is this? Is it a paraphrase Bible?

A: The version I have is the New International Version of the Bible. It is not a paraphrase but a very understandable modern translation.

Q: You’ve mentioned using the Serendipity Bible as a tool in discipling others. I understand the importance of Bible study, but why exactly should I be concerned with discipling others?

A: A disciple is a learner, so to disciple someone is to mentor someone to follow the ways of Christ through your teaching and example. We do this because it is commanded by Christ and it was modeled by Christ. Jesus mentored three types of discipleship in his earthly ministry: one was to preach to the multitudes, the second was to teach the twelve and the seventy, and the last was the special training of the three apostles Peter, James and John. Discipleship enables the Church to carry out the mandate to... go, to bring forth fruit, and to retain our fruit! Discipleship is the means that Christ and the apostles used to accomplish the Great Commission and it is to be our means as well. The purpose of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples for the transformation of the world.

Copies of the Serendipity Bible are available for purchase at Christ Corner Bookstore.

One of the goals of our Communications Team is to re-train you to take your bulletin home so you can refer to it for information on upcoming ministry events, find out who the contact persons are, and discover how you can get connected, how you can serve, and where you’re needed. Think about this, too: you can also use your bulletin to introduce neighbors, co-workers, and friends to the church as you invite them to come with you. Help share the good things happening at Christ Church by recycling in a new way - out in the neighborhood, and out in the world! Help support the staff, lay leaders, and volunteers by allowing your bulletin to remind you to pray for them. Help yourself by stepping out in faith, praying over the ministry announcements, and asking God to show you how you might get connected by serving. Thank you for your support in this effort.

SMALL SEEDS, MIGHTY TREESPaul wrote, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow” - 1 Corinthians 3:6. Is it time to add more water to the seeds of faith that have been planted in you? Consider serving our congregation as a Stephen Minister. A Stephen Minister is a one-on-one confidential Christian caregiver to a person going through crisis. Our congregation is asking about your interest in becoming a Stephen Minister. When we have enough persons showing interest, a Stephen Ministry training class will be scheduled. Training equips you to listen, explore feelings, pray, share Christ’s love, maintain confidentiality, and attend to the caregiving process, leaving the results to God. To indicate your interest and/or find out more about Stephen Ministry, contact Sally McKnight at 713.306.1719.

You might not know this, but hospitals do not contact churches – even when you give them your church name, address, and contact information. Part of this is due to HIPPA laws. So whether you’re about to enter the hospital or you’re celebrating the birth of a baby, please call Sandy White in the church office at 281.980.6888.
