Introduction

My father, Trevor Beale, started the wonderful tradition of concerts at West Lodge Park in 1974, and the season of concerts each year has continued ever since for 45 years.This brochure celebrates over 240 concerts to be held at West Lodge Park, a wonderful milestone by any standard.

The format is simple – enjoy good food, fine wine and high quality classical music in beautiful and civilised surroundings. Each evening starts with a sparkling wine and canapés reception at 7pm, followed by a starter and main course served in our Cedar restaurant.

We then move to the delightful Lancaster Room for the first half of the concert before going back to our tables for dessert, liqueurs and coffee. The second half of the concert takes place back in the Lancaster room. The evening finishes with tea with the musicians in the lounge at around 11pm.

What is particularly special about the concerts at West Lodge Park is the ability to enjoy top artists from the classical world in such an intimate setting rather than in a huge concert hall. This salon setting is how musicians would have performed in the eighteenth century.

Come along to a concert at West Lodge Park some time and enjoy a wonderful evening out. Better still, book one of our beautiful bedrooms for the night, with privileged rates for all attending the concert, and look forward to falling straight into bed at the end of the evening rather than facing the M25!

27th January 1974 - Concert Dinner

London Harpsichord EnsembleThe very first concert at West Lodge Park was presented by the London Harpsichord Ensemble, comprising of Sarah Francis (oboe), John Francis (flute), Cecil James (bassoon) and Millicent Silver (harpsichord). This popular Baroque ensemble is highly praised for their stylish interpretation of 18th century music.

This first concert was for one evening, but the ensemble were invited back to West Lodge Park on several other occasions; in April 1980 because of high demand and their popularity they gave concerts over two days (on the 5th and 6th) and, again in February 1984 they appeared for a two-day period (on the 10th and 11th). They then were invited back again at the 115th concert on 29th January 1993.

Julian Lloyd Webber, Cellist

On the 16th January 1976 Julian Lloyd Webber, then aged 25, appeared at West Lodge Park. He was accompanied on the piano by Rhondda Gillespie, and delighted guests with a programme which included pieces by Vivaldi, Britten, Saint Saens, Brahms and Bliss.

Julian, the second son of composer William Lloyd Webber and Jean Hermione, is the younger brother of the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Julian was a scholar at the Royal College of Music (London) and completed his studies with Pierre Fournier in Geneva in 1973. He made his professional debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in January 1972 when he gave the first London performance of the Cello Concerto by Sir Arthur Bliss.

He delighted our guests at West Lodge Park, and we have followed his career with interest since that visit.

FAMOUS ARTISTS - during the 1970s

Dame Felicity Lott , SopranoFelicity Lott sung at West Lodge Park on 3rd December 1976.

She has earned an international reputation as a concert singer, collaborating with most of the great conductors currently active. She has a special love for French “mélodies”, German Lieder and the English song repertoire, particularly the songs of Benjamin Britten.

Felicity Lott has received many honorary degrees, sang at the wedding of HRH Prince Andrew in 1986, was elected to the French légion d’honneur and made a DBE in 1996.

Howard Shelley, PianistHoward Shelley played at West Lodge Park on 14th January 1977.

After winning the premier prize at the Royal College of Music at the end of his first year, Howard Shelley’s career began with a successful London recital and a televised Promenade concert with the London Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas in the same season. Since then he has performed regularly throughout the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, North America, Russia, Australia, and the Far East. He has also made over seventy-five commercial recordings.

In 1994, an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Music was conferred on him by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Shelley was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2009 New Year Honours.

Concerts at West Lodge Park during the 1970s

Raphael Wallfisch

Cellist, and Peter Wallfisch

PianistWest Lodge Park prides itself in spotting excellent talent and on the 5th December 1985, Raphael Wallfisch, one of the most celebrated cellists performing on the international stage, was invited to give a concert, accompanied by his father Peter, himself a celebrated pianist.

Alexander Baillie, Cellist

On the 4th December 1981 Alexander Baillie, recognised as one of the finest cellists of his generation, appeared at West Lodge Park. He began playing the cello at the comparatively late age of twelve having been directly inspired by the late Jacqueline du Pré. He went on to study at London’s Royal College of Music with Joan Dickson and Anna Shuttleworth and with Andre Navarra in Vienna.

Appearances with British orchestras have included the Elgar Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton, the Schumann Concerto with Marek Janowski and the BBC Symphony at the BBC Proms, the Walton Concerto under the late Sir Alexander Gibson with the Royal philharmonic, the Dvorak Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony under Sir Simon Rattle. He has also directed and performed the Haydn and Boccherini concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra.

Alexander’s programme for West Lodge Park, with the accompaniment of Kathron Sturrock on the piano included the Prelude and Fugue from Suite No.5 in C minor by Bach, Sonata in A Minor by César Franck, Fantasiestücke Op.73 by Schumann and the Pezzo Capriccioso by Tschaikovsky.

Raphael was born in London into a family of distinguished musicians, his mother the cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and his father the pianist Peter Wallfisch.

At an early age, Raphael was greatly inspired by hearing Zara Nelsova play, and, guided by a succession of fine teachers including Amaryllis Fleming, Amadeo Baldovino and Derek Simpson, it became apparent that the cello was to be his life’s work. While studying with the great Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky in California, he was chosen to perform chamber music with Jascha Heifetz in the informal recitals that Piatigorsky held at his home.

Raphael plays a 1760 Gennaro Gagliano cello. He now lives in London with his wife, the violinist Elizabeth, and has three children, Benjamin, Simon, and Joanna.

Raphael and Peter’s programme at West Lodge Park comprised Sonata in G major by Bach, Sonata by Bridge, Adagio and Allegro, Op.70 by Schumann and the Sonata in E minor, Op.38 by Brahms.


Leslie Howard, Pianist

Leslie Howard played at West Lodge Park on 15th April 1988

His mature debut as a pianist came at the age of 13, with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. He learned the oboe at an early age, and has even performed Mozart’s Oboe Concerto.

He often gives masterclasses at the Royal College of Music and Royal Academy of Music.

He frequently appears with promising student pianists to help further their careers. Examples are performances of Liszt’s arrangement for two pianos of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with Coady Green; piano duets of Percy Grainger with Michael Brownlee-Walker; and conducting a performance of Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto in London’s Wigmore Hall, and then again at the Royal Festival Hall for the Pearl Awards, with a 9-year old Chinese pianist as soloist.

Howard is also frequently invited to sit on the juries of music competitions, such as the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition and the Royal Over-Seas League’s annual music competition.

He has a large repertoire of solo and chamber music, and more than 80 works with orchestra.

Paul Lewis, PianistPaul Lewis played at West Lodge Park on 14th October 1994

His father worked at the Liverpool docks and his mother was a local council worker; there were no musicians in his family background.

Lewis began by playing the cello, the only instrument for which his school could

offer him tuition. At the age of 14 he was accepted by Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, where his piano studies blossomed. His first international achievement was the second prize at the 1994 World Piano Competition in London. He also won the Dudley and Royal Overseas League Piano Competitions.

Lewis is strongly affiliated with the Wigmore Hall, London. He has played at many prestigious venues and festivals worldwide and with many notable orchestras and conductors.

Lewis performed all 32 of the Beethoven piano sonatas, on tour in the United States and Europe, between the 2005 and 2007 seasons, in parallel with his complete recording of the cycle for Harmonia Mundi. Each of these CD releases has been included in Gramophone magazine’s “Editor’s Choice”, and in August 2008, volume 4 of the series was awarded Gramophone’s “Best Instrumental” recording and “Best Recording of the Year”.

In July and August 2010 Lewis became the first pianist to perform all five Beethoven Concertos in a single season of The BBC Proms

The Fitzwilliam Quartet performed at West Lodge Park on 10th February 1995 and delighted our guests with their programme of The Italian Serenade by Hugo Wolf, I Crisantemi by Puccini and the Quartet No.3 in F major, Op.73 by Shostakovich and Quartet No.2 in F major, Op.22 by Tchaikovsky.

The Quartet was formed in 1968 by four Cambridge undergraduates, and they originally became well known through their close personal association with Shostakovich who visited them in New York in 1972; they were the first group to perform and record all fifteen of his quartets, giving the Western premieres of the last three. Their concert schedule has taken them to North America at least twice every year , as well as to virtually every European country (including the USSR) and Japan. Having gained many international awards for their Shostakovich recordings - including the first every Gramophone Award for chamber music in 1977 - their contract with Decca continued with some less familiar Romantic repertoire, after which they embarked on a Beethoven cycle.

Angela Hewitt, Pianist

Angela Hewitt performed at West Lodge Park on 4th October 1996

Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt was born in Ottawa, daughter of the Yorkshire-born Godfrey Hewitt (thus she has dual nationality) who was choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa. She began piano studies at the age of three with her mother. Her first full-length recital was at the age of nine, in The

Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied from 1964 to 1973 with Earle Moss and Myrtle Guerrero. She then went on to be the student of French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa.

Angela Hewitt has performed around the world in recital and as soloist with orchestra. She is most well known for her cycle of Bach recordings which she began in 1994 and finished in 2005—covering all the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach. Her recording of Bach’s Art of Fugue will appear in 2014..

She has recorded two discs of Mozart concertos with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, and a third featuring Ottawa’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, conducted by Hannu Lintu, will appear in 2014. With the DSO Berlin and Lintu, she also recorded the Schumann Piano Concerto.

Angela Hewitt’s entire 2007-2008 season was devoted to complete performances of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier in major cities all over the world. Her Hyperion DVD on Bach Performance on the Piano was released to coincide with the tour.

ARTISTS - Since 2000

Pavão String QuartetOn the 17th November 2006, The Pavão Quartet appeared at West Lodge Park to a delighted audience. The Quartet comprises Kerenza Peacock and Jenny Sacha (violins), Natalie Gomes (viola) and Bryony James (cello).

Formed in 1998 at the Royal Academy of Music, this versatile Quartet has over the past twelve years become established as a highly regarded and versatile string quartet. In addition to a busy concert schedule across the UK, the Pavãos have performed in Oman, Israel, Syria, Monaco, Portugal France and represented Britain at the International Chamber Music Festival in Latvia.

They have performed with Katherine Jenkins, Andrew Bocelli, Pavarotti, Elaine Paige, Hayley Westenra, Charlotte Church and Victoria Hart.

Gerald Dickens Gerald Dickens is the great great grandson of the author, Charles Dickens. He has been working as an actor, director and producer for many years. In 1993 he created his first one-man show, a theatrical performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’ inspired by Charles’ own energetic readings of the 1860s. On the 21st November 2008, we invited him to appear at West Lodge Park, where he delighted us with his readings and was accompanied by Elizabeth Hayes on the piano.

A fascination with the life and works of his great great grandfather led him to write and direct further one-man shows including ‘Mr Dickens is Coming!’, ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ and ‘Sketches by Boz’. He regularly performs in schools and universities as well as at major theatres and arts centres. Critics and audiences in the USA and Canada have given him rave reviews and standing ovations during 15 annual Christmas tours. His television work has included various appearances on features and documentaries for BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

Brodowski String QuartetComprising David Brodowski (violin), Catrin Win Morgan (violin), Felix Tanner (viola) and Vanessa Lucas-Smith (cello) the Brodowski String Quartet appeared at West Lodge Park on the 2nd October 2009. Their programme comprised the Sun Quartet in B flat Op.20 No.4 by Haydn, two pieces for string quartet by Shostokovich, Four for Tango by Piazzolla, and Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No.1 in d major, Op.11.

The quartet members, originating from Germany, Wales, Scotland and England are currently based in London. They are recipients of the Richard Carne Junior Fellowship for Chamber Ensembles at Trinity College of Music, where in 2008 they held the Bulldog Scholarship for String Quartet. They are also currently ‘Associate Artists’ at the Anvil Concert Hall in Basingstoke.

They were selected as Park Lane Group Young Artists for 2008, giving a critically acclaimed recital at the Purcell Room in London, their playing being described as ‘open and honest’, The Times. In 2007 they were winners of the Val Tidone International Chamber Music Competition in Italy and were also prize winners in the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition in the Netherlands broadcast on Radio 4 Netherlands.

Locrian Ensemble

The Locrian Ensemble have played at West Lodge Park on several occasions since 2000.

Bringing together some of the most prominent string soloists in London, the Locrian Ensemble was formed in 1995 and has established an enviable reputation for its recordings, broadcasts and live performances. The group frequently expands and this provides a vehicle for concerto playing for the group’s key members. For instance, the Locrian Ensemble regularly performs at St Martins in the Fields presenting programmes of baroque and classical music, whilst also enlarging when required, into a compact chamber orchestra.

The Locrian have recorded works for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM, and released numerous compact discs.

The Locrian Ensemble are frequently heard on television and film. Recent recordings include the score for Oscar Wilde’s Fairy Stories in Dublin, as playing the score to the film of “Wilde” starring Stephen Fry.

Philip Fowke, Pianist

Philip Fowke studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Gordon Green. In 1974 he made his London debut with a recital at the Wigmore Hall (Beethoven, Schumann, Bartók

and Liszt). That year he won joint second place at the BBC Piano Competition. This led to broadcasts on BBC radio in a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

Fowke made his Proms debut in 1979 with a performance of John Ireland’s Piano Concerto in E flat, with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Simon Rattle. His other appearances at the Proms include Constant Lambert’s Piano Concerto and Richard Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto.

Fowke has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Trinity College of Music. Since 2000 he has been pianist with the London Piano Quartet. He has toured in many countries and has played under numerous international conductors

In 2008 the Navarra Quartet won the Outstanding Young Artist Award at the MIDEM Classique

Awards in Cannes and in 2007 received a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, culminating in a highly acclaimed disc of Haydn’s Seven Last Words. They won 2nd Prize in the 2007 Melbourne, 1st Prize in the 2005 Florence International Competitions and were selected by YCAT in 2006.

Recent concert appearances included recitals at Wigmore Hall, Perth Concert Hall, Bath Festival, (broadcast on Radio 3), and the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Founded in 1953 by Eli Goren, William Pleeth, Patrick Ireland and James Barton, the Allegri Quartet is Britain’s longest-running chamber music ensemble, sustained over six decades by successive generations of the finest international performers.

The Quartet enjoys collaborating with other artists, and has worked with a raft of outstanding soloists such as Jack Brymer, Clifford Curzon, Dame Thea King, John Ogden and Gervase de Peyer. Their numerous international festival appearances have included Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, Prague Spring, Berlin, Hong Kong, and Stavanger.

Miriam and Nicholas are both Naxos recording artists and their performances have been described by American Record Guide as “flawless and beautiful”. They have performed in major venues around the world including London’s Wigmore Hall and New York’s Lincoln Centre. Their recent recital in South Africa was described by Artsmart Durban as “An evening of superb music making … Performed with intensity and tenderness … Passionate and flamboyantly virtuosic, bringing the audience to its feet”.

London Harp QuartetComprising Elizabeth Bass, Catherine Derrick, Mary Reid, Heather Wrighton

Fast building a reputation for their vibrant programmes and virtuosic performances. Founded by alumnae from the Royal Academy of Music under the artistic direction of Skaila Kanga, all four members thrive in varied musical settings at a professional level. They are passionate about promoting the harp and new music through this unique quartet, most recently having performed at Chichester Cathedral and St Martin-in-the-Fields.
